ONE DIRECTION — Story of My Life (2013)
Rest in Peace, Liam Payne (1993-2024)
they were all brothers. they are all brothers.
no one, and i mean no one, will ever be able to understand those years and growing into adults in the bubble they were the way those five will. for five years, they saw each other more than they saw their own families. they became family. they share something so special that people nor circumstances will ever break— they shared their youth. they shared a flash of time together that shaped them from boys into men. and as much as we’ve talked about how integral liam was to our childhoods and growth through this band, a piece of the other four boys’ childhoods and youth also died yesterday. a piece of their history died yesterday. a face to their personal memories died yesterday. and it’s devastating.
they found a home in each other when they were so far away from home, and i cannot even begin to imagine the grief they are feeling and will continue to feel.
walking in the wind has the perfect line like “if you’re lost, just look for me. you’ll find me in the region of the summer stars” and i know for a lifetime to come those four guys will be living that out as the years go on.
my entire chest aches for them. they deserve all the space and grace during this delicate time.
RIP Liam
Before I was a k-pop fan I was a hardcore directioner. One Direction began my entire fangirl life. They were my life. They made me happy and saved my life throughout high school when I really needed help. I owe so much of my life and myself to them because they were everything to me.
Finding out that Liam passed is so heartbreaking that it is almost too hard to believe. I feel so beyond shocked that I don't even understand what reality is. We were supposed to be old when members started leaving us but we are in our 20s wondering what the hell just happened.
Now, I understand that Liam was not the best person. We have found out that he was an abuser and struggled with drugs and alcohol. I am not condoning any of that or pushing it aside. I am not grieving an abuser. I am grieving Liam Payne of One Direction. The Liam Payne that I grew up with and looked up to. I am grieving an entire era of my childhood. I am grieving all those memories, friends, concerts, midnight drops, laughs and tears that I experienced during that time. And I am grieving a reunion that every directioner has waited and was willing to wait for, for as long as it took.
One Direction was historic whether you liked them or not or whether you were a fan or not. And Liam was a part of that. There is no One Direction without Liam Payne. So it is okay to grieve Liam for who we knew him as during our time together.
Liam, you will be missed in a way that only a true directioner can understand. You will never be forgotten for the impact you made on so many fans across the world. I hope you have peace and no more pain. I hope your family and friends are able to get through this.
Lastly, thank you for being there for me and for all of us when we needed it. Thank you for being a part of One Direction. Thank you for giving us a lifetime of memories and happiness.
Every single one of you had a hand in changing our lives and I hope you’re as proud as we are. xx
you know the post that's like: one day I'll be 45 at a party and ill hear a one direction song and ill be dancing my heart out because I never learned to love anything as much as I love one direction?......... yeah.......thinking of that right now
idt i've ever seen so many different people share so much grief over a celebrity's passing, like it's soooo personal and is really reminding me how deeply generational one direction truly is, and how their impact still pulses through so many lives. like the melodies of our youth are woven with the voices of the boyband that once held our heart - still do.
what really gets me, after the initial shock, is the fact that what i remember as a group of bright eyed, over ambitious kids are now grown adults who are able to navigate the complexity of this situation.
we not only grew up with the boys, but we grew up with each other.
a lot of us have careers, families, a whole life far detached from the one we used to dedicate to a group of five boys (and their families, hairstylist, bodyguards… even a pigeon). and in one moment, simultaneously and instantly, all those memories came pouring and flooding back.
we grew up, but we never left
as much as i'm hurting with them, i'm hurting for them so much more. if i'm this hurt, i can't even imagine what they all must be feeling
Please, fly high, angel🕊🕊
The mother of my babies, Harry, Zayn, Louis, and Niall. They could never make me hate you, Liam. I know God has got our lives planned, but I was expecting to continue growing with you, I was expecting to see you happy again, baby 💔
A One Direction reunion seems too abusing to ask now, I just want you back, Liam.
You brought joy to me and oh so many others, you were far too young to leave us yet. You didn't deserve the hate you got, I knew you'd be able to make do for yourself, but now, turns out, you needed some help.
I know that some things you did weren't right at all, but you still formed part of my childhood, and I forever will be grateful to you for that
I'm so sorry, Liam, that you couldn't get the help needed.
Please, know that I appreciate your talent and the way you took care of our boys.
I love you, Liam
Go and be an angel🕊🕊🕊
Liam, I hope you have found rest and peace wherever you are now. You will forever live in our memories and our hearts. Thank you for the music, your incredible beautiful voice, your amazing character and for your wonderful prints you've left on this world that will forever live on. Sleep well 🖤
Bro no one speak to me- Liam Payne died.
My childhood died with him.
We grew up together.
We all were supposed to grow old and gray together.
Rest easy angel. 😭💔
I'm not On Here anymore, but every once in a while something happens with 1D that compels me to make an appearance, if only because this site has chronicled so much of my 1D journey that it feels wrong for the long tail of that experience not to be documented as well.
Liam changed my life. Not in any specific "X led to Y" way that I can point to. I don't know what would be different about me now if I'd made some different choices in October 2012 and never gone down this particular road - but I loved One Direction, and I loved Liam best of all, and that defined my life for years in a way that I will never forget and will always be grateful for. For years, when I was miserable, he made me happy. He brought so much joy into my life, often through his own seemingly boundless capacity for joy and gratitude.
Earlier this year I came back to Tumblr to mark the end of my Liam journey - partly, like I said, because it feels weird NOT to come back to mark the big stuff, but also because it felt necessary, given how little traction it seemed like Maya's interview was getting, to boost it with whatever decayed remnants of my platform here still existed.
I thought it was the end, and it was certainly the end of something, but if I thought there would be anything after it...I thought it'd be complicated feelings a few years from now about a half-assed reunion at an awards show or charity event. I thought it'd be an unfortunate numbness at Liam and Louis popping up every so often to be Liam and Louis. I knew it was the end of something for me, but I just assumed that meant there were years and decades ahead of us sprinkled with happenings, things I wouldn't enjoy the way I once would have and the ongoing experience of reckoning with that. I was done with him but he was still someone I'd once loved with everything I had, and I wanted him to figure himself out and emerge better on the other side, preferably out of the public eye but somewhere.
There was just supposed to be more.
Liam was revealed to have done a lot of shitty things recently. They were the actions of someone who was deeply unhappy, likely because he was forced to grow up far too fast and face a lot of adult truths and situations before he was ready for them. I didn't like who he'd become, but I respected the way that the other boys sometimes seemed to try to protect him through their silence. Because I think they all knew that but for luck and fate, any of them could have been Liam.
I believe victims. I can condemn Liam's actions and support his victims without fully writing off Liam the person because Liam the person was likely also a victim in a lot of ways. I had hoped he'd fade from the spotlight and we'd start hearing about him again in ten years. That he was doing better, that he had genuine friends and relationships, that he'd kicked the drugs and drinking. But that's not going to happen. This dark chapter of his life will always be the last. He's dead at 31 and I find that so incredibly sad. He was a dad. He was someone's son, and friend, and brother. He warned us about snake habitats and couldn't spell and had to shave off all of his hair because only one person in the band could have dark curls.
RIP, Liam Payne. One Direction was this surprising, luminous, insane thing that crash landed into my dark little world in 2014. So, thank you, thank you, so much for being a part of that. I hope you've found some peace.
I just keep thinking about the History lyrics “we can live forever” and that’s how I’ve always felt about 1D… because yes, they will live forever in our hearts as a special moment in our lives
Regardless, celebrity deaths hurt and are strange and hard to navigate. You didn’t know them. They didn’t know you. But they impacted your life or touched you with their art in some fashion. And grieving over them doesn’t make you weird or strange. Humans are complex and our emotions are multilayered. Just be kind to yourselves.
RIP :(
