Why the hell did Valentine bastard Morgenstern, die so quickly and painlessly? One second and he's dead. Despite all the suffering he has caused to the world, to the angel Ithuriel, Raziel could have come up with a better way to kill the most terrifying human monster of all time. Are there any other atrocities that he didn't commit? He betrayed his parabatai, killed a pregnant woman to kidnap her child. He beat his children and was anything but a father to them. He was experimenting on his wife without her knowledge. He destroyed his son, just to create a monster. He burned the little boy and his father, as well as Jocelyn's parents. He was in league with demons; for decades he kept an angel in a basement and tortured him... And for all this, such an easy death? He needed to be dismembered and magically prevented from dying, as the demon he was talking about did to children, and not some pathetic arrow in the chest. Or at least turn him into a werewolf!

If nothing else, Sebastian sure inherited his father's misogyny.

In all seriousness, I think it's fascinating how he's trying to make Clary think that she and Jocelyn are just as bad as him and Valentine by completely decontextualizing their actions. Sure, Jocelyn manipulated Valentine by pretending to be in love with him because he had been drugging her against her will, doing evil science experiments on living beings in the basements, and plotting to take over the world. She's the villain for arranging consequences to his genocidal actions.

Jocelyn is ruthless, and that's one of my favorite things about her. She was in an abusive relationship for years and systematically isolated from any sort of support network, but she still gathered her resources and did whatever the hell it took to bring Valentine down. She stayed in that house even after knowing what a monster he was, because she knew that she was the only one with the tools to stop him before it was too late. Most importantly, she was willing to let her friends pay the price for their actions. After years of the Circle supporting each other through increasingly atrocious actions, Jocelyn finally decided that some things can't be ignored. Friendship is enough to make many people turn a blind eye, but Jocelyn set those personal connections aside and was able to recognize that the Circle was a dangerous cult whose members (no matter how she felt about them as individuals) were dangerous to the world at large.

Anyways, I love Jocelyn Fairchild and I hope she absolutely ruins even more horrible men.

Was Jocelyn naive enough to believe that she could change an immoral freak? Valentine was originally a jerk, he didn't even hide it. They have a very strange "love" story. She didn't like him, considered his actions dangerous, and then, bam💥, and love caught up with her. Another silly fantasy from the genre of teenage fantasy🤦 And notice how hypocritical she is, which annoys me terribly about her. She hated Valentine and suddenly realized what a terrible person he was, and that he needed to be stopped only when his madness touched her personally. She didn't give a damn about what Valentine was doing to the underworld, or what he wanted to do to the conclave. She went to circle meetings, she didn't live in a golden cage. He became a terrible person for her, not because he was a mass murderer, and in fact a terrorist, a sick psycho, but because he framed Lucian, and conducted experiments on her and the child. She married a man who had been promoting his extremism since school and openly spoke of his hatred of the downworld. Did she think that he would calm down or that she would be able to control him? Even then it was clear that there would be no peaceful family life with a man like Valentine. It's only going to get worse. Lucian describes her as a strong and strong-willed person, but in fact whiny and weak, and apparently a little stupid. She would have continued crying into her pillow if Valentine hadn't given her angel blood. And again she eats from his hands. Seriously, Jocelyn🗿🤦

And Sebastian's hatred of Jocelyn is predictable. He was raised by his father, and why should Sebastian consider him a villain. He grew up on Valentine's teachings. For Valentine, everything Jocelyn did was a betrayal. In his opinion, she went against the family. She had ruined his life's work. He burned down her house and parents in revenge and as part of a plan. Valentine experimented on his children to make them stronger; Jocelyn did not accept this and hated him and the child. That's what Valentine told Sebastian. Since childhood, Sebastian has been told that his mother does not love him, which is essentially true and manipulative. Valentine turned Jocelyn into a traitor. He blackened her, and turned himself into a victim. As always though. It's unclear how he even planned to live together, because he brainwashed his son so much that Seb feels nothing but hatred for her. Sebastian had no luck with his stupid parents💔

The Shadowhunter generation fights evil with their lives, experiencing all the horrors of war, and still being human.

The Circle generation: one person couldn't recover from the death of their father and decided to start a bloody madness. Instead of fighting evil, they and their Circle become evil themselves.

Why the hell are they all so delicate in the Circle? Many other characters have problems a hundred times worse, and they deal with them instead of suffering from such nonsense.

The Circle is a generation of weaklings.

When it comes to the Circle, Cassie seems to be messing with readers' heads by confusing things, and as a Circle fan, I'm starting to get annoyed😵‍💫

In the story "The Evil We Love," Robert mentioned that Valentine had recently become friends with him, and Valentine and Lucian were already friends. However, in the story "Who the Wolf Loves," they were all hanging out together, with Lucian standing off to the side. And let's not even talk about Stephen! First, it's said that he joined the circle after Lucian "left," then it's revealed that he joined the academy and the circle during the "TEWL" story, and finally, it's revealed that he was already in the circle from the beginning. Oh, my God.

I remember Luke saying that Valentine came to his room and called him by his first name! and that's how their friendship began. However, they started talking during a shooting lesson. I like this version better than the one where Valentine stalked Lucian like a maniac, trying to figure out where he lived.

I find it funny that the characters claimed that young Valentine didn't say anything about the Downworlds before his father's death, and how kind he was. He was only interested in the Cup and its use, and he believed that there should be more Shadowhunters. However, in "Who the Wolf Loves," Valentine openly expresses his dislike for the Downworlds from the very beginning! Is this hatred inherited from his family?

I liked Lucian's thoughts about who Valentine really is and who he used to be. He's a man who loves power, or a boy who's loyal to his goals and his friends, and it's ironic that after everything that's happened, he's leaning towards the latter. Everything about Valentine screams of how despicable, hateful, and evil he is. It wasn't his father's death that influenced his transformation. He was a despicable bastard from the start.

The truly sick thing about Valentine is how he was still capable of, and did still, love. Like he did actually love Jocelyn, if no one else, but it was in that twisted, obsessive way that made him turn everything they loved about one another into ash and dust

Not only did I pick this song for obvious reasons, I think a lot of the lyrics are about how you become obsessed with the concept of having a Valentine. I ROOT FOR YOU! I LOVE YOU, YOU YOU YOU. everything is about them, but instead of just for day it’s Valentines entire life. He thinks he’s better than everyone and can save us all.

I think this song is reminding me of men who always want unrealistic things from women, obviously, anyone can wear a short skirt and a long jacket. The lyrics I think describe his view of women more are; ‘I want a girl with a mind like a diamond, I want a girl that knows what’s best!’ An intelligent woman, who’s always making sure they both do what’s best, who cares more for him than himself and her own self. ‘I want a girls you the right allocations, who’s fast and thorough and sharp as a tac’ (Marsye is like 6 ft) He’s talking about the type of build she has to have as well and the qualities that goes with her genius ultra intense brain. Just, unrealistic things for everyday of your entire life.

I’ve recommended this song before, and for good reason. ITS A BANGER. In my opinion, it’s about how once he, the singer is out of his relationship. The lyrics describe a ‘HER’, however I think this song is equally linked with Valentine and Luke than Joclyean and Luke. ‘When it’s over…. Can I still come over? And when’s it over.. is it REALLY over?” I think this would be fitting to describe how Luke thought about Valentine after he had been bitten. His whole ‘I want all down worlders’ kick and started before Luke was bitten. This song also maybe reminds of how slightly hurt he would have been.. like the man who was your mentor and then Parabati, who you spend years of your live with is in town.. and you don’t even get a losy blackmail phone call or even a crackled phone through a pay phone? OUCH. All your favourite tv shows? OUT THE WINDOW!

‘When your lover has gone away, don’t it make you feel sad?’ I think we need to address the elephant in the room.. the fact that Celine stole the love he had for Atamis.. for HERSELF? Not only would this be extremely distressing for Atamis, but STEPHEN. I know in uh.. I forget which book but you guys know the book, and he goes back and talks to her about it and he’s incredibly rude? He’s been described as ‘unfailingly nice with it being boring.’ And he’s divorcing his wife for a woman he has no romantic interest in at all not to mention, A MINOR? Buddy, you’ve got a fast train all right and it sure went off the rails.

‘where was my head? What was I thinking of? Why did I leave?’ LITERALLY, WHERE WAS YOUR HEAD GIRL? LITERALLY WHAT WERE YOU THINKING OF? anyways.. i think that sums it about up! I will write anyways to do justice! She’s been abused, tortured, etc you get the drill, but still GIRL? I know it’s not all her fault obviously, she was borderline a CHILD?

‘Im a scandal that I’m holding, I’m a picture that I’m holding of someone who’s cool’ his roots, essentially. He wants to be like Valentine, he wants to be loved to a godly degree. For so many reasons did I pick this song, I think with most of the members of the circle, they want to be apart of something bigger than themselves.

I do kinda wish Tatiana was overall a better villain and character because I think she has the potential to offer alot of nuance but… she’s just kinda meh.

Anyways to *not* be a hater I think Tatiana is the most effected Lightwood sibling from there fathers abuse and neglect. She’s also the only Lightwood sibling to have never met there mother. And on this note: it means the only warm Tatiana has ever felt, is from her abusive father. In SOBH (and some parts of CP2) it implies that Benedict was shaping her into this role to only be a wife and also to gain certain powers for the Lightwood house. Her marriage to Rupert (which to Tatiana is her only source of happiness) was something malicious made from Benedict.

And on this note: her story in CP2 is also just a nightmare story. She’s SIXTEEN and PREGNANT and her husband was just murdered RIGHT after there honeymoon and than also her father (IMO the story sets it up that this is the family member she’s the closest to) is also murdered. Like hello??? Is this not a nightmare?

Anyways; I’m not really trying to say that Tatiana is a good person and the statue of kindness, because she’s not. I just think her story could have been a more interesting take on the cycle abuse, which could have made a good parallel that her brothers, Gideon and Gabriel where able to break it, while Tatiana could not. The way she treats Grace, moulding her into what she wants and what she needs is exactly what Benedict did to her. I mean Grace in CHOT is very reflective of Tatiana in cp2 too as well.

Also, this quote that she says in the midnight heir is like the epitome of her characters and I really like it —> “My husband is dead, my father is dead, my brothers are lost, my home was stolen, and the Nephilim had no power to save my son. Hello! I do not know why I am writing this. I want to share my opinion, I've been keeping it to myself for too long. I want to know your opinion♥️After I read CoLS, Valentine and his parents intrigued me more than ever! He raised his children the same way they raised him. His father raised him to be a warrior. Judging by his complex nature and contempt for all weaknesses, there was a lot of cruelty in his childhood. Or has it already happened after Oskar's death? Because the books very often repeat how much Valentine changed for the worse after Oskar's death. Before his father's death, Valentine was described as a kind guy who could only be angered by injustice. I wonder how he was raised. Valentine's children hated and despised him. He died, and none of them really grieved, and none of his children attended his funeral. I am sure that if Sebastian had been alive then, he would not have come. While Valentine himself turned his life into hell, taking the lives of his friends with him. He loved his father so much! This is surprising, considering that he was mistreated. Is this true, considering what Sebastian said about it?

Or, on the contrary, did he grow up in love and no one denied him anything? All the attention is on him. Therefore, he did not like it when someone rejected him, did not act the way he wanted - he had little experience in this. Because his parents indulged him all his childhood. So, do you think he suffered abuse, trials and punishments, or is Valentin a spoiled boy from a rich family?

Hi! I've never thought of Valentine as a spoiled boy. I don't think Seb would lie about it, because it doesn't make sense. Oskar was the one who "helped him become a Shadowhunter" and trained him. Valentine grew up with a father whose love must be earned. He wasn't someone who was loved just because he was their son. He has to be perfect, and then maybe Dad will be happy. Therefore, he could crave attention to himself, want to be admired - because he did not get it in the family. He was getting annoyed when people disagreed with him, when he was rejected - perhaps because for him it was such a trigger from childhood.

When Valentine taught Robert how to deal with the fear of runes, he advised him to withdraw into some distant part of his subconscious. I thought then, "Oh boy, that's what you did when your dad bullied taught you the art of war."

I don't really believe that he changed after his father's death. Rather, it became more difficult for him to hide his true self, to control his anger, and I think that the conclave did not investigate Oskar's murder in any way, thereby awakening Satan in the "kind guy who could only be angered by injustice."

There is very little information about the Morgensterns in the books, and why should we know anything about Valentine, he is not an Herondale🤭. But I saw Cassie's post saying that Oskar Morgenstern wasn't a good person-it would be nice if she mentioned it in books somehow. What is its badness? Was he against the Conclave? Was he against downworlders? Was he a bad husband and/or father? What's wrong with him? If we talk about Valentine's grief, I think he was disappointed that the one he admired, looked up to, and expected praise from was killed not even by a higher demon, but by a werewolf.

Considering that Valentine did not name his son after Oskar, but would like to name his daughter after his mother, I am sure he loved her, and it was her death - and she died of a heart attack shortly after her husband's death - that finally drove him crazy. Sometimes I imagine how he takes care of her, almost sleeping by her bedside, asking for help from all the doctors of Idris, doing everything possible to keep her alive, even playing the piano for her. But Seraphina is dying. I wouldn't be surprised if she was treated by the Silent Brothers. They did not save her, and Valentine reminded them of this many years later, having finally become disillusioned with the Conclave.

I think Valentine's backstory is irrelevant - cuz nothing can really justify all that he has done.

And bear with me - but sometimes ppl use upbringings to sympathize with villians, and shift them from a bad character to a 'morally grey one'

And Valentine isn't a villian - he's a TYRANT.

So No, I don't care for his childhood, cuz he can never be humanized. Why should we read about his life?? He was trash.

The only part of him that should be remembered: is the terror and Cult behaviour he practiced- which should continue to be taught at shadowhunter academies, as a lesson of both 'false sense of justice' and evil disoriented pseudo-vigilantism.

Also that: when a being reaches such pits of behaviour- their death/end may come from one of their own.

What does the excuse have to do with it? What Valentine did cannot be justified. And no one is going to feel sorry for him. Hmm, parenting doesn't matter? And then the whole fandom screams that Seb is a villain because Valentine raised him that way. Parenting matters. This is the foundation of the basics. For example, I need his past. I don't think it's fair that we know about the backstory of the other villains, but there's almost nothing about him. I understand Tatiana's story and why she became the way she became, and I understand the tragedy of Malcom and Mortmain. But nothing is clear about Valentine. His father is dying, and he's losing his mind. Seriously? Is this the main reason for his downfall? We need a complete picture of the character, which is not there. And it's not about empathy. The usual interest.

Not everyone is interested in good characters. It's boring. The psychology of villains/tyrants is much more interesting to study and analyze!

In Defense of Celine Herondale

Some of you guys are way too hard on her. She was a literal child who was abused her entire life. Valentine knew this and took advantage of it. He offered to give her exactly what she wanted (Stephen) and of course she said yes. She was 17 and very desperate for love. Does that excuse what she did? No. She still hurt Stephen and Amatis. Was she old enough to have known better? Probably. But does it give some very important context to her choices? Yes.

I'm not trying to insinuate that she's innocent in this situation or the sole victim, but I don't agree with the amount of hate some people throw at her. Stephen, Amatis, and Celine all were hurt in some way and it honestly wasn't fair to any of them. But making Celine out as a homewrecker and nothing else is also unfair.

Side note: I don't know how common this opinion actually is, but I thought I'd just give my 2 cents anyway even though nobody asked.

I'm sorry, but she wasn't a child anymore when she made that decision. When you were 17, didn't you realize that ruining someone else's marriage was a bad thing? I realized this when I was 15. If you've read "the wicked ones" carefully, Celine has seen what Valentine is capable of. She had the right thoughts about him, that he might kill her, and she should leave. He killed her parents. He's a terrible person, and she knows it. In her circle, she is not taken seriously, Stephen considers her a child. She knows all this. She does not respect Amatis, believes that she is not good enough for Stephen, believing that a good wife is an obedient spouse. No, age has nothing to do with it. Celine is an egotist. It would be better if she studied at the academy instead of drooling over someone else's husband and not spying on couples kissing. When I read "the wicked ones", I really wanted her to think about her decision before voicing it to Valentine. It would have been much better for her if she had refused this deal, thanking Morgenstern for ridding her of her evil parents, and for the fact that it was enough to keep the secret. She was free and had inherited. she could have started a new life and even come out of this circle alive. She had a choice. But she decided to separate two loving people, knowing that Stephen does not love her.
