If Valentine had raised Jace and Sebastian together:
Cassie turned Valentine into a villain who is worse than any other demon. There is not a single positive quality, not a single good deed. I've never seen such vile characters before.
I remembered those words from Luke. Still, Lucian's belief that there is something good about Valentine after all amazes me. Although maybe he just wanted to calm Jace down.
Wasn't Valentine confused by the snakes in her eye sockets? He didn't doubt his plan for a second and made a demon the mother of his son? What if this snake-like trait had been passed on to Jonathan? What then?
I've never been able to accurately imagine Valentine's appearance. The way his appearance was described in the books was a bit confusing to me.
"Valentine. He bore little resemblance to the handsome boy in the photograph, though his eyes were still black. His face was not what she had expected: It was a restrained, closed, interior face, the face of a priest, with sorrowful eyes" -city of bones
"His features were smooth and sharp at once, like sculpted ice" - the evil we love
"He was handsome the way a statue was handsome: perfectly sculpted, unyielding as stone" - the wicked ones
But then I saw Christian Bale and I thought that if he were blond, he could be the perfect Valentine. 10000% hit in the character description.
š«Lucian Graymark & Valentine Morgenstern
"I worshipped him. I thought the sun rose and set on Valentine Morgenstern"
If "the secret treasons" is ever written, then I will go crazy from an overabundance of feelings.
I'm watching Netflix's "Worst Ex Ever," a documentary series about real-life relationship crimes. To my horror, in almost every story, I recalled the relationship between Jocelyn and Valentine. The love story began with how good, kind, charismatic, and caring Valentine was (seemed to be) in the beginning and who he became after a while, as he turned Jocelyn's life into hell. Control, isolation, manipulation, his frequent outbursts of anger, surveillance and kidnappings. His attempts to pressure pity so that Jocelyn forgives, and she said that she often gave him chances, and it seems even before Jonathan was born. What the hell else was he doing?
In each story "Worst Ex Ever" partner committed all of the above actions, as well as beat and mocked in every possible way the one he "loved." I do not know if Valentine did anything like that with Jocelyn, but he definitely used psychological violence against her. After all, she was afraid of him. It's so awful.
Valentine said he would never hurt Jocelyn. But what about the experiments on her, without her knowledge, which led to a painful pregnancy? The "murder" of Lucian, who was her best friend? He burned down her house and her parents. He chained her to the bed! He sent demons after her. Once again, he turned her house into chaos, took away her belongings and equipment (why?)
In his opinion, what is it but causing pain and suffering? It's scary to think what he would do if he wanted to hurt herš Would he have killed Clary? He points his sword at his daughter every time, but still doesn't kill her...
My theory about the Morgensterns and Lucifer being tied together starts to sound more reasonable. Think about it: why would a Shadowhunter in the past choose to name his family after Lucifer in a society where they kill demons and everything related to them is taboo?
Also, the lack of information on the Morgenstern family in the prequel series compared to other families. We know so much about the Herondales, Blackthorns, Lightwoods, and Fairchilds, but next to nothing about the Morgensterns. They were the main villains in the present story, but before Valentine, we know nothing except that his dad was much like him and that there was an unnamed uncle.
The new sample from The Last King of Faerie confirms my theory: āWe were doing one on the Princes of Hellāeveryone says there are nine of them, but really, arenāt there eight? Lucifer hasnāt appeared to anyone for a thousand years.ā I wonder if maybe he did appear to a certain family who shares his name, and maybe Sebastianās creation didnāt come from Valentine alone. It would be very much like Lucifer to tempt the people who are supposed to fight against him in the name of God.
I like this theory! Valentine's story, which is so similar to Lucifer's, is related to his fascination with Dante's novel Paradise Lost, where he singles out Lucifer over and over again.
Why isn't Lucifer on the throne in the Princes of Hell project? Or he may not have a physical body. Or he's already among the people. Why wasn't he at the meeting of the princes of Hell? Very interesting.
But I have a feeling that Lucifer might have something to do with Ty... What if an Angel had locked him in some kind of cage, and Ty's necromantic magic had cracked, and thus Lucifer had been freed? Or Lucifer manifests when all the other princes of hell unite. And since they were feuding all this time, Lucifer "disappeared."
š« valentine morgenstern
"And he damned himself. Whether you believe in Heaven and Hell or not, he damned himself surely. When he summoned Raziel, Raziel struck him down. Partly in revenge for what Valentine had done to his brother angel"
- the city of lost souls
āLucifer hasnāt appeared to anyone for a thousand yearsā
Baby boy Iām gonna need you to stop talking right now
It seems that Lucifer is the only one of the princes of hell who does not terrorize anyone.
Hi!ā„ļø Do you think Valentine and Luke used to fight a lot when they were friends?
Hi!
Luke looks like a man who can swallow a grudge. He didn't say a word when he found out that Valentine had started dating Jocelyn. He said himself that he never reacted to Valentine's anger. arguing with Valentine is exhausting. We see this in the "City of Bones". In an argument with Luke, Valentine blames Lucian for everything, although he himself is to blame for everything. He calls Luke a traitor, even though Valentine is the traitor. There's no point in explaining anything to him. It's a waste of time and effort, and Luke knows it. Sometimes Valentine makes concessions on his own, instead of quarreling. We also see story "The Evil We Love," and in "The Bane Chronicles", he steps aside, allowing Luke to save a werewolf girl. In this case, I think Valentine didn't throw a tantrum just because he had already mentally buried Lucian. They would have argued often and persistently if Luke had reacted to Valentine's attacks. Luke did not do this and kept his nerve cells healthy.
hello! do you think sebastian-jonathan loved valentine? how could he feel about him?
Hi. Is Sebastian even capable of love? It seemed to me that he did not respect his father, he did not obey him. He doesn't react at all to Clary's provocation that it was she who killed Valentine. On the contrary, he sees himself in her act, in her murder. All he wanted to do was prove to Valentine that he was the best.
What do you think was the water test for Luke and Valentine before the parabatai ritual? What were they supposed to save each other from? If Valentine thought that all this was really happening and that he himself was in danger, isn't it strange that he decided to take the risk and save someone's life, and not his own in the first place? Although, I think he somehow realized that it was a test and an illusion
To perform this ritual, you need to discreetly add water from Lake Lin to the food of the ritual participant. Nothing escaped Valentine's attention, except for Jocelyn's second pregnancy, he could understand that this was unrealistic.
He could have risked it to save Luke's life. He's a good fighter, he's confident in his abilities.
It would be interesting if they found themselves in a dangerous situation that scared them the most - hmm, what is Valentine afraid of? - But first of all they should think about the Parabatai, not about themselves. Valentine might not have loved Luke, but for some reason he needed him at that moment, so he would have had to save him even at the risk of his life, but he was too proud and might not even have realized that he was risking his life. For him, it's more of a challenge that he needs to succeed in.
Why do you think Jocelyn looked at Luke like āshe didnāt know what her body could give herā when they made love in āWho the wolf lovesā?
My first thought at the time was that Jocelyn could never have imagined that she could feel anything at that moment. After the uprising, she fell into a daze, the shock seemed to deafen her. all this time, which she lived with Valentine, was filled with tension and fear. but with Luke, she relaxes and feels like a living person again. Luke awakens feelings and pleasant sensations in her.
So, I saw a post with this quote, where the author suggests that Valentine Morgenstern was bad in bed. I don't even know. Is this even possible?
Although I've heard the theory that narcissists can be terrible in bed because they don't understand their partner's desires and only want to please themselves, they tend to be selfish in everything. (an excellent analysis of Valentine's personality, where the author calls him a narcissist, and I also agree with this, although Cassie herself does not confirm this in any way
š¬ 0Ā Ā š 10Ā Ā ā¤ļø 21Ā Ā·Ā Iād love some analysis on Valentine, I adore hating him, heās such a despicable but fascinating character. Iād also love
Perhaps in the last years of their marriage, he didn't really care about pleasing his wife. His mind was preoccupied with other things. Maybe he was just using her to relieve the tensionš¤·
Iād love some analysis on Valentine, I adore hating him, heās such a despicable but fascinating character. Iād also love analysis on CĆ©line, Jocelyn or anyone else you feel like talking about.
Next analysis will probably be Valentineās traits as a narcissist and the characters who fell victim to it and how e.g Jocelyn, Sebastian, Jace etc
Iād like to think I have a deep understanding of Valentine since my father also displayed narcissism towards his partners and children, so analysing Valentine and his actions would be something I have a personal experience with or Iāve been an observer to. Cassie wrote him very well, imho.
Isn't he a fanatic? all his terrible actions are caused by fanaticism. He sacrifices friends, family, and even himself because of his faith in the "great cause." His faith always comes first. I really want to read your opinion about narcissism, because, fortunately, I have not met with it personally, I have only read about it. there are common features, he is very proud, he does not see his guilt. at that moment, when he tries to deceive Jocelyn that there are no screams coming from under the basement, that everything is fine, well, I think it was a lie for the good on his part. He knew that his experiments would horrify her, and he was right. From this information about narcissists, you can often find out how they devalue the successes of their partners by ridiculing them. Their favorite phrase: "You'll be lost without me. Where would you be if it wasn't for me?" This is not like Valentine and Jocelyn's relationship. It's funny, he tells her (and lies) that he's nothing without her. He married her because he saw strength in her.
In general, I am looking forward to your analysis. I just love them.
Okay, so important distinction: Fascism and/or Fanaticism is in most cases a political/religious ideology, while narcissism is a psychological trait or, in extreme forms, a personality disorder. One can exist with the other.
Fascist ideologies and narcissistic personalities often reinforce each other, for example:
Grandiosity ("Our nation/people are superior.")
Desire for dominance and control
Intolerance/anger of criticism
Obsession with strength, power, and glory
Need for admiration or loyalty
Fascist ideology fits a narcissistic worldview ("We are special/We must dominate others/Disagreement is betrayalā)
Narcissistic traits push can someone to the top of an authoritarian movement e.g charisma, ability to inspire fear or devotion, Manipulating emotions etc
Grandiose belief in personal destiny
Viewing oneself as a heroic saviour
Fascist ideologists can resemble the characteristics of a pathological narcissist (but this does not mean all narcissists are automatically fascist, or that all fascists are narcissists). Fascist ideologies- if anything-promote a Narcissist's mindset. They may feel the ideology āvalidatesā them. Creating a group like The Circle of Raziel, gave the perfect conditions for someone (Valentine) with strong narcissistic traits.
Authoritarian/Fascist groups often prefer leaders who command attention and enforce rigid loyalty the way a narcissist can- particularly, a covert narcissist like Valentine. Coverts love being admired, are aggressive when challenged, and controls openly by being intimidating. If you think he only controls others subtly and often slyly, read back on the City of Bones finale when he is confronted by Luke and youāll find this is not the case. He yells and rages. He is a very angry person and he sometimes cannot mask it.
Now, on how he treats Jocelyn is the biggest clue for Valentineās narcissistic ways. It starts when he meets her: Narcissists are sensitive to rejection, and thatās why he was so obsessed with Jocelyn. She subtly but openly rejected him in front of everyone when they first became acquaintances. Rejection causes a narcissistic wound; acceptance gives a them a high because their power game worked.
Valentine does show emotional vulnerability to Jocelyn (and even Luke) and it is real emotion. Valentine being under the NPD umbrella has the ability to express something called Compromised Empathy. Compromised Empathy means that you express Empathy only in certain situations and to certain people, in a very limited degree. In other words, people with pathological narcissism or NPD have compromised and fluctuating empathy, but they do not lack empathy.
Valentine lying to Jocelyn about the screams she was actively hearing every night was the textbook definition of gaslighting. A gaslighting narcissist husband uses manipulative tactics like denial, blaming, and belittling to make his partner doubt their sanity.
I would be awoken at night by cries and screams that seemed to be coming from inside the walls of the house. I confronted him with these things, demanded that he tell me what he was really doing every night. But he just laughed. āYouāre imagining things, Jocelyn,ā he said. āItās probably because of the baby.ā I stared at him. āBecause of the baby? What baby?ā -> Jocelynās Story
During the time she started questioning Valentine, he isolates her from her friends and loved ones. He tells her circle meetings are no place for a pregnant woman and she becomes increasingly lonely and suicidal. Jocelyn tells herself that heās only trying to protect her- which was never the case. Thatās only what he wants her to believe.
āAnd if sometimes I woke up with odd injuries or bruises, well, Valentine told me it was because I had been sleepwalkingāa common ailment among pregnant women, he assured me.ā -> Jocelynās Story
Valentine twists the facts and makes Jocelyn doubt her reality. He- the narcissist- knows that a divided and conquered mind is their most vulnerable and susceptible target. When Jocelyn goes to Luke in fear of her husband and Luke confronts him, Valentine stops this right away. Like I said, he isolates Jocelyn from her support person and systems. Jocelyn is now depressed and canāt get out of bed: Her activity is now monitored and controlled. This is called coercive control. Itās a common effect utilised by a narcissistic partner when youāre trying to leave them.
By telling Jocelyn that her fears and anxieties are invalid just because she is pregnant, Valentine is belittling her. Heās telling her sheās in a weak state and canāt trust herself. Heās telling her: You canāt trust yourself so trust me. Itās not exactly outright cruel (e.g telling her sheās useless and stupid) but it is much more manipulative and dangerous because of it.
Let me be clear: Valentine only loves Jocelyn for her intelligence and strength when it serves him and his cause. Narcissistic people may think they love and perhaps they can in their own special way, but these people are often useless to them if they cannot give you anything. He takes and respects her council because it ups his game. Itās not as if he loves her for her own autonomy. He loves her because she can be extension of him. A powerful tool in his arsenal that he can utilise whenever he needs it. And because of that exact idea of Jocelyn, he underestimates her. Sheās the only thing he thought he had complete control over, and the only thing that came back and bit him.
Then, after Jocelynās plotting and betrayal is revealed, he threatens her. He threatens their child. He warns her that he would make her life hell, and he does. This is a common promise when Narcissists are rejected. Jocelyn became the paranoid, overprotective person that she was in the series because she always had the threat of Valentine looming over her. She always has to run, has to hide.
He was snarling horrible things in my ear, things about what he would do to my parents, to Jonathan, how he would make my life a hell for what Iād done to him. -> Jocelynās Story
In narcissistic dynamics, children can unfortunately become tools in the parentās conflict with the ex-partner. Simply put, the narcissistic rage that is triggered by the separation often triggers especially toxic behavior by narcissists with children. This rage often justifies setting aside all norms and morality (Valentine canonically used whips, isolation chambers and animals). Any anger, humiliation, or loss of control the narcissistic parent feels toward the ex can be displaced onto the child. The child then becomes the scapegoat. Valentine blames Sebastian for his own actions and wrongdoings and this then becomes an intangible part of Sebastianās psyche of āIām a monsterā. Iāll talk more on the narcissistic family dynamics (golden child, lost child etc) later.
āShe swallowed. āI cried over the box because my child was stolen from me.ā āA child you never cared about.ā āThat isnāt true,ā she said. āBefore you were born, I loved you, the idea of you. I loved you when I felt your heartbeat inside me. Then you were born and you wereāā āA monster?ā (ā¦) āYour soul was dead,ā she said. āI could see it in your eyes when I looked at you.ā -> City of Heavenly Fire
When Sebastian asks about Jocelyn (in the comic by Cassandra Jean above), Valentine sabotages Sebastianās ideas of Jocelyn as his mother. Like Jocelyn said in cohf, Valentine for all intents and purposes steals her child from her. He makes Sebastian reject Jocelyn, therefore making his son only loyal to him- the father. Sebastian never bothered to seek her out for love or attention because what he thought of her (and what she thought of him) was already cemented by Valentine. The lying, manipulation and gaslighting normally reserved for other adults ā is being used to fully assault a young child with the full power of narcissistic gaslighting. Children are often no match for a narcissistic parentās predations. Even a demonic one.
Remember:
Fascism = political ideology.
Narcissism = personality trait.
They can occur together (like in Valentine), but one does not require the other. Thereās always a spectrum with Cluster B disorders, so Valentine may have certain traits other narcissists may not.
Anyways, these examples are just what youāve mentioned. Iāll post a much more in depth analysis soon.
How is such a personality formed? The most common opinion is that this is the result of psychological trauma or that a person grew up with such narcissistic parents.
I was recently asked if Valentine could have been a spoiled child. (https://www.tumblr.com/omgserafinablog/781294830550679552/hello-i-do-not-know-why-i-am-writing-this-i-want?source=share)
I hadn't really thought about it before, it always seemed to me that his parents (especially his father) were quite strict and cruel to him. It's only when you read all the stories about his youth that you start to doubt. Yes, Luke's father, it seems to me, is a hundred times worse, but never mind, Luke has become a good man. Is it possible that for the most part narcissism is the result of pampering, when the family has always admired any achievement of the child, even the most insignificant? That's where all his narcissism and pride comes from. He was the most beloved and wonderful child in the family. Besides, he was the only child in the family. He received all the love and attention of his parents. He was so angry when he wasn't noticed, when he was rejected, because he wasn't used to it. Because everyone loved him, and he was allowed to do anything. What do you think?
Luke says that Valentine did not keep anyone in the circle by force, and always provided a choice. Valentine and the choice: "You dig up Celine's corpse and help me cut the baby out of her, or I'll bury you. The choice is yours."
