Lesson 5: What is a Bug?

NOTE: The idea behind this is to get them to start observing the differences of small creatures, their morphology. Also it gets them thinking about the precision of words, generic verses accurate terms. Lastly it gets in some counting practice.

What is a bug?

Is an ant a bug?

Is a spider a bug?

Is a frog a bug?

Is a slug a bug?

The first way to tell what is what is how many legs they have.

How many legs does this ant have?

This beetle?

Six. Things with six legs are called insects. Insects also have things on their heads called antenna. They use them to sense what’s going on around them not walk. Ants, beetles, flies, and bees are all insects.

Now look at this spider. How many legs does it have?

Spiders have eight legs. So are spiders the same as Insects?

No spiders are a different kind of little creature.

Have you ever seen something like this?

It’s called a centipede. It has many many legs. Is it a spider or an insect?

Neither, it’s another different kind of creature different from spiders or insects.

How many legs does a slug have?

None. It just slides around on its stomach.

It’s very different from spiders or insects or centipedes.

Now look at a frog. How many legs does it have?

Four. Can you think of anything else with four legs

(They can suggest dogs, cats, horses, all sorts of things. You might have to prompt them a bit.)

Want to know a secret? We have four legs too.

We walk on two of them, and we use the other two to reach for things so we call them arms. But they are really our front legs. We just started using them differently.

How about birds?

Birds did the same thing. Birds have two legs, and they modified the other two to fly so we call them wings. But really they started out as legs.

So you see, calling something a bug isn’t a terribly useful term. It doesn’t really tell you what something is.

Oh and bees like bumblebees have six legs. So they’d be…insects. Here is a song called the flight of the bumblebee.
