Nancy Wheeler "make your fingers soft and light. let your body be the velvet of the night.
touch my soul, you know how.
andante, andante, go slowly with me now."
What if he's written 'mine' on my upper thigh only in my mind?
One slip and falling back into the hedge maze, oh what a way to die.
I keep recalling things we never did.
Messy top lip kiss, how I long for our trysts.
Without ever touching his skin, how can I be guilty as sin?
who: nancy wheeler & eddie munson ( @hellfirecoded )
where: the munson trailer
as soon as sheβd heard the news, eddie had been one of the first people to pop into her head. after confirming that everyone in her family had gotten home safely, the first place she stopped had been the hideout. instead of waiting around out back this time, she had made a beeline up to the bar. only to find out that he hadnβt come into work that night and the bartender in his place didnβt seem to know when heβd be returning. βshit,β she mumbled to herself as she turned to head back out to her car. was it acceptable to go over to his place right now? though, did she care about any looks or questions she might get from anyone else around? all she wanted to do was make sure that he was okay.
nancyβs nerves seemed to pick up as she drove across town, hyper aware of every strange shadow now that the threat of their past had popped back up again. was vecna actually back somehow or could this be the work of someone else? pushing it out of her head for now, she parked outside the munsonβs trailer and bounded up to the door. her arm raised as her fist pounded against the metal of the door in front of her, pausing for just a moment to see if she heard anything from the other side. when it didnβt seem like anyone was coming, she started up again with no plans to stop until the man sheβd come to see was standing in front of her. with his van in view, she knew there was no where else he could be.
mike didn't expect anyone he knew to come in and see him. he didn't expect it tonight at least. he'd been trying to keep his mind off of the most recent attack at the carnival, that he hadn't attended because of work but he'd heard about it on the news. he was worried about his friends and family more than anything. he took a small breath in as he saw a familiar face walk into the hideout, "hey." he said simply, "what can i get for you?" it was a small place, so he didn't really have to talk too loudly.
a million different thoughts and questions had been running through her head the second she'd found out about what happened at the carnival. with the few details she knew, the only thing that seemed to make sense was that these attacks weren't simply a human gone wild. something had made its way to hawkins. knowing the seemingly stronger connection her brother had to the upside down caused her to jump in her car and head to the hideout in hopes of finding him safe and sound. despite having been gone for the past few years, she never stopped worrying about and caring for her younger siblings. nancy quickly headed inside, relieved to see that mike seemed perfectly fine. "i'm not here for a drink," she told him with a shake of her head. "are you okay? have you been here all night?"
"no, it's okay," she insisted, waving her hand as if to dismiss the apology. it wasn't like she owned the spot and she knew that it was only a matter of time before she'd arrive to find that someone else had taken over. though she hadn't expected someone to be around this late at night. "it's the best spot." nancy offered the other girl a smile, hoping to show that there weren't any hard feelings on her end either.
she didn't know what it was, but coming back home had almost made her feel as if she had two separate lives. one part of her was the old nancy, the one who followed all of the rules and was beloved in town for being the studious, generous young girl. while the other was the version she had turned into who cherished her independence and fought anyone who dared to stand in her way. "i don't think we've met." not that she knew every single person in town, but she liked to think she knew of most people. majority thanks to her mother who kept her up to date. "i'm nancy," she introduced, offering the woman her hand. "wheeler."
even when the first talks had started years ago, nancy had never been the biggest fan of the mall. there were so many smaller stores in hawkins, run by people who had roots in the town, that deserved the business instead of the franchises that took over. unfortunately, with the mall having been a success after its rebuild, there were some places that she couldn't avoid. she'd stopped by a couple of stores during her quick trip and had now ventured to the food court, hoping she'd be able to grab something for a quick dinner before she went home to continue working on her article.
as she stood in the middle of the food court, looking around at the various options, she noticed someone familiar sitting at a table nearby. figuring now was as good of a time as any, nancy made her way over to the other woman with a smile on her face. "hey," she started. while she'd never hung out with the same crowd as chrissy did, the girl had never been anything but nice to her and that's all that mattered to nancy. "how are you? feels like it's been years since i've seen you." once nancy had graduated, she'd left hawkins in the rearview.
despite knowing being there posed a risk of bumping into puppy-love struck teenagers, nancy still enjoyed going down to lover's lake. she'd been there plenty of times while growing up, though only once for its not so hidden intended purpose; steve had been exceptionally convincing when she was sixteen. nowadays, she found that there was a small hidden spot, tucked behind an often neglected bush, that made the perfect place to think things through and enjoy her own company.
nancy expertly made her way to the spot now, happy that the later hour meant that most kids had found their way home by now so as not to get in trouble with their parents. last thing she expected was to find someone already there. "oh," she started, pausing in place as the person came into view. "i'm sorry. i didn't think anyone else would be here." she should've known that the whereabouts of the perfect hiding place wouldn't be exclusive to her, but it somehow still took her by surprise.
IT WOULDNβT HAVE BEEN a shell shock for any hawkins resident to come back into town to realize that nothing had changed. disgraced with a tainted name, sure. even more in the past two years but every closed minded, judgmental human being still resided in their small cul de sac. those that even hinted that they were different from the rest of the cookie cutter lifestyle they were meant to be raised in was scorned into hiding. and him? well, eddie would forever have the string of accusations trailing behind him within this town. a glare at the supermarket or a slur whispered as he walked to his van β good olβ hawkins. she was smart to get out. he only hoped that it would be a stop she made and not roots to plant for herself.Β
βWHAT?! YOU MEAN SHE DIDNβT WANT hawkinβs worst resident at her birthday party? she was missing out on a damn good time. iβm the greatest party crasher this place has ever seen,β eddie toyed along, his usual loud self coming out at the hint of her laughter. comfort was hard to find these days but he entrusted his solace with nancy. it was hard not to match her wit when she claimed intimidation over the patriarchy. it came as no surprise to the metal head that nancy wheeler boasted about her determination to disarm it one day. she couldβve had a plan for world domination and he would fully believe her. βoh, iβm shaking in my boots as we speak. any more intimidation tactics youβre trying on me? iβm pretty sure after a ten hour shift, you could fool me into giving up my social security if you wanted to.βΒ
THERE WAS AN HONESTY behind every word he had in regard to the journalist. she had a drive that heβd never seen in anyone, least not in these streets of indiana. she was who she was. take it or leave it. it was admirable to someone like eddie. inspiring in a way that he wanted to be. the mention of wayne brought a hidden, genuine smile to the crook of his lips. shrugging in response as he tapped his hands against the driver side door of his van. βlovely β is a βΒ rivetingΒ way to describe him. i concur β but youβre right. βsides, i really donβt want the fifty questions. also β the neighbors like to talk, ya know?β especially given the last time he brought anyone back to his place in the early morning hours, his trailer was taped off as a crime scene by dawn. βso ββ he jumped into his driverβs side and quickly shut the door before turning to her with a coy grin, ββ blow all the stop lights and push about fifty on the main road is what youβre telling me? you canβt just leave me hanging about heathcliff, wheeler. i only skimmed that for three years in a row in oβdonnellβs class.β it wasnβt a lie. he never even touched the book for the final. maybe thatβs why he failed her class, three times.Β
βheard she was going for an angelic theme this year. couldnβt risk anyone bringing a little devil along,β she joked about the fake party. βdonβt worry, i wasnβt invited either. havenβt you heard the story of the town harlot? she had her name across the marquee and everything. certainly not pure enough.β in the moment, that had felt like the worst thing that couldβve happened to her. having something that she had felt to be so private and monumental be spread across town like wildfire was her first real taste of what happened in that town when you dared to go against what society had hoped for you. then the upside down opened, and well, it made joking about the smaller things in her teens that much easier. βyou know, it does sound tempting to put my identity aside for a little while. think i can convince you to switch places?β she doubted her boss would even notice.
while she knew of, or knew stories, about almost everyone in town, she didnβt know all that much about eddieβs uncle. back when everything had first started happening, and the fingers were all pointing at eddie, nancy and the rest of the group knew better. so nancy, being nancy, had wandered up to wayne and somehow got him to open up just a little bit. enough to give nancy the smallest idea that she immediately ran with. βhe was always lovely to me,β she added, standing by her description. both munsons were. βyou know i donβt care about anything anyone wants to say about me, but i understand wanting to dodge a game of twenty questions.β that had been a pretty big reason of why she hadnβt wanted to spend much time with her parents. βhad my apartment lined up before i even told my mom i was moving back. i know you and your uncle are close, but god, i canβt even imagine having to introduce people or explain whenever i had someone over.β
nancy pulled back enough to give him the space to get into the car, paused for him to, very slowly, roll down the window, and then stepped forward again. βyou can feel free to drive like a maniac, but youβll just be waiting for me outside the apartment while iβm going the speed limit,β she told him. a little smirk brought up one corner of her lips as she took a few steps back towards her own car parked beside his. βnever really put it together until now, but you and heathcliff have a lot in common.β nancy knew heβd have no idea what she meant by that, but she hoped that it would at least have him thinking and wondering what she was thinking. βsee you in fifteen?β she unlocked her car door and quickly slipped into the driverβs seat, almost as a way to cut him off from any questions that popped up.
TRUTH BE TOLD, the last person eddie ever expected to waltz through the hideout doors was nancy wheeler. for one reason or another, this town had been trying to diminish the young journalist mind since he could remember. small town talk of her getting back into town had been heard through the grapevine but it wasnβt until he laid eyes on her himself that he believed it. her mind was brilliant. budding and innovative in a way that hawkins would never be. if anyone was going to escape this town and all the deadbeats in it, it was nancy wheeler. thatβs why it came as a surprise to see her with his own skeptical gaze, but nevertheless, he enjoyed the moment to actually indulge in her conversations. it was something he rarely had with her in school. two different crowds. two different directions. their paths were never meant to intertwine β that was, until the upside down. even going to school together all those years in hawkins, it never put them in preparation for what was to come march of 1986.
βIS MRS. HAMILTON EVEN STILL BREATHING β what is she now? 109?β eddie scoffed abrasively, theatrics his tell all when it came to the comfort he displayed around people. he wasnβt too much into the flare and flaunting with tasteful words these days. he couldnβt afford the added attention. so when he found that he could be himself around someone close to the chest, he embraced the sarcasm and showy humor. β βsides, sheβs totally wrong. youβre not a menace to society β youβre the menace of society.β a telling grin spread along the metalheadβs features, moving to his driver side door to unlock it manually. the book in her hand became of interest to him, gesturing there with a nod of his head. βwhatcha got there? more investigative journalism?β he questioned, the screech of his metal door rubbing together as it opened.
IT BECAME A MORE FREQUENT OCCURRENCE, seeing the eldest wheeler waiting by his van in the early morning hours. it felt like a fever dream. having him constantly question if he was truly conscious. yet, there she had been patiently waiting for the last closing minutes of his shift. for that, he was certain that heβd never find anyone more daring than her. βyou telling me all about it on the ride back to yours β or is it mine this time?β
when she first got back home, she had felt everything from the past come rushing back at once and it had taken a couple days for her to shake it all off. she was no longer the same girl that sheβd once been. she was no longer nancy wheeler: slut, monster hunter, priss, princess, insert random name given to her by a neighbor here. she was, finally and simply, just herself. it was something that she was trying to pull back now. trying to make sure that simply being home didnβt erase everything sheβd worked so hard to build for herself. one of the things that came along with just nancy meant that she found herself making connections with people sheβd never really expected to. the people that, while sheβd been friendly with in the past, sheβd never really given a chance.
her lips curled up in a smile of approval in response to the sarcasm that was shot back at her. it had been nice to find someone that could often meet her quip for quip. debate for debate. β110, actually. didnβt you get the party invite?β at the addition to his playful comment, she dramatically took a bow. βnancy wheeler: town menace. itβs a wonder they allowed me past the welcome sign.β the one that she did note still had the faint lines of the word hell spray painted across it. her eyes followed him as he moved around to get into the van, keys to her own car in the palm of her hand. βdare i say iβm reading for pleasure and terrify men into thinking women have brains?β even as she joked, she held up the novel in her hands. wuthering heights had always been a favorite of hers.
βyour uncleβs lovely and everything, but i donβt know how thrilled heβd be about you having company in the middle of the night.β that was one of the reasons sheβd opted for her own place instead of accepting her momβs extremely eager invitation to move back into the family home. having her own apartment meant peace whenever she was looking for it. βmeet you back at my place and i promise to bore you with tales of heathcliff,β she decided with a playful smile as she took a step back, still facing him. they both knew they probably wouldnβt even touch on anything about the book she was reading. majority of the time, they jumped into one conversation that snowballed into another until they realized they should both get some sleep before the morning sun snuck through.
steve knew the voice before he even looked up. a smile crept onto his face before he even realized it. he had heard she was going to be back in town, but hadn't asked any questions, much to karen wheeler's disappointment. "nancy, hey! your mom told me you were moving back," he smiled. "you know, i think a meeting of the minds can be arranged," he laughed, turning the carseat around to face her. "nancy meet daisy, daisy meet nancy."
"you know, i think i could turn fifty and she would still be in the nursing home telling everyone that would listen about my latest life updates," she commented with a short laugh. if only her mom knew to keep certain play by plays to herself. her gaze stayed on the baby in front of her, easily taking note of the smaller features that mirrored steve's. "it's nice to meet you, daisy," she easily played along. "i know you already know this, but you have a really great dad." nancy had always known that steve would be the perfect guy to someday have a family he could be proud of. her attention finally pulled away in order to meet his eyes now. "it's nice to see you." her tone was softer. genuine.
a playfully smug grin came out in response to the other girl's reaction to what she'd done. while she knew her brother's group would often pester each other out of love, she knew they usually knew better than to do the same to her. max was one who knew better, attempted it anyway, and secretly got the nancy seal of approval. "you forget i've had years and years of practice dodging the world's most annoying of little brothers." since she'd had enough of the way too giant dish in front of her, she pushed it in max's direction while listening to the updates she was willing to share. "my favorite bartender in training," she commented. the swap to her and lucas had nancy simply nodding along. the two had been on and off again for the majority of their relationship, and while nancy rooted for the two of them to find happiness together, she rarely pushed or commented unless asked for advice. "i'm still processing the steve having a baby scenario," she admitted. not that she never expected it to happen. she knew her ex had always wanted a family, and she really was happy for him. it had just been jarring to experience. "i don't know if i'd call my life exciting," she started. "have a pretty rough assignment right now hence the solo ice cream party." plus she was back home after a couple great years of freedom from her hometown, but that one was obvious.
truthfully, nancy found it comforting to be at the mall without any lingering fear that something was lurking at every turn. she hadn't really been back since that first summer when everything happened, but the town had done a great job at rebuilding and pushing the "fire" to the back of everyone's minds. everything seemed, well, normal for once. while she'd been doing some shopping for new clothes to wear to work, she had decided to stop by scoops ahoy to treat herself to a 'you're back in your hometown, but still an adult and can have ice cream whenever you want' sundae.
nancy knew the other girl immediately. back when everything had gone down, and even now, she felt the need to be the older sister to the two girls in her brother's friend group. both were strong on their own, but she knew everyone needed support sometimes. at the sight of max's hand coming towards her, she expertly dodged the flick with a quick pull backwards. "care to join me," she asked, smile easily finding its way to her face. "i'm buying if you finish catching me up on what's new with you."

KEYS JANGLED AS THEY SPUN around the middle of his index finger through theΒ backdoor of the unoccupied bar. closing shift was the toughest,Β though the night owlΒ in him didn't seem to mind the early morning hours all that much. it was the last call to theΒ locking of the doors that were so drawn out by the disgruntled patrons to the rowdy drunks that begged for 'one more for the road, eddie!' it happened just about every night. estranged husbands that didn't want to set foot into their homes or venomousΒ bikers that were unemployed for the time beingΒ β they all found their way to the hideout. and eddie's job was to oblige them. be their therapist or just their ontap bar boy. either way, when the short-circuitedΒ 'OPEN' sign was no longer lit, the ache in his head seemed to dwindle along with the drunks out the door.Β
ONE FINAL PULL OF THE BACK DOOR had him off toward his van. repainted, for the fourth time since the beginning of theΒ year. ever so often after hours, he found that a new, fresh and dripping spray of red paint had been smeared along the metal sides. a new word. a new title. yet, the same message displayed as his eyes took in the vandalized piece of junk that was his vehicle each time he left through the discreet exit of the bar. nothing had been written this time and he found that it may be because of the frame that was patiently waiting up against the hood of his car. expectantly, nancy wheeler always waited. most of the time, against his wishes behind the dodgy dive bar that he worked at but she never took no for an answer.Β
"Β β HOW LONG WERE YOU WAITING THIS TIME?" eddie's question rose between them, though the proximity between their bodies only grew closer with every step he took. "if you say more than fifteen minutes, i might have to cause a scene next time. call the cops and tell 'em some strange girl keeps waiting for me in the back parking lot," he mused, humorously. "they know me well, ya know."
it hadn't been something she'd planned. a few days after she'd returned to hawkins, nancy had stopped by the hideout on the way home in hopes of secretly grabbing just one drink to ease the frustrating week of work. of course, she'd been thrilled to find max, and then pleasantly surprised to find eddie. while they'd never had too much of an opportunity to chat in the past, now that everything was (hopefully) behind them, their conversations seemed to have no end. whether it was catching up on the latest hawkins gossip, ranting about the bullshit stories she'd been assigned, or chatting about the most recent movies they'd seen, they easily morphed through topic after topic. it seemed like those late night hours did wonders in opening people up and breaking down those filters that kept in everything serious.
after a few weeks of hanging around at the bar for much longer than she needed to, she started opting to spend the last hour or so of his shift waiting for him out back instead. there, no one looked at her or tried getting her number. there was less of a risk of someone remembering they'd seen the wheeler girl around one too many nights. plus, it seemed to discourage people from vandalizing his car. nothing put more of a damper on plans than nancy wheeler waving at you from her spotlight under the lamppost. the sound of the back door scraping against the concrete had her slipping her bookmark into the page. what else was she supposed to do while she waited?
"i don't know what you're talking about. surely, the cops would wonder who's afraid of little old me," she replied as she slid down from her spot, feet gently landing on the ground below her. of course, more people should be afraid of her, but that didn't seem to be the general consensus of the town. nowadays, they mostly just looked over at her with pity in their eyes. poor girl had been this close to becoming a wife. "complain to mrs. hamilton on the other hand, and i'm a total menace to society."
steve normally would have had a babysitter lined up on days he had to work but he was surprised with a last minute call out so he had to bring daisy with him to the video store. not that the baby seemed to care as she sat in her carseat ontop of the counter next to the register. steve had been cooing and talking to his daughter when the bell on the door rang for the first time that day, barely looking up he waved to the customer and greeted them, "welcome to family video. it's an impromptu take your daughter to work day so let us know if you need any help."
coming back home meant that she was now on what seemed to be her reunion tour. she'd seen max and eddie, and while she'd been happy to see both, the potential reunion before her felt more serious somehow. of course she'd heard a few things here and there - karen wheeler was notorious for getting the town gossip and then spilling it all to nancy on their weekly phone calls - but she didn't know specifics. most of the time, if karen's conversation steered too close to those nancy had been close to, she rushed her mom off of the phone. nancy stepped into family video and was immediately taken back to high school at the sound of the voice that greeted her. though then she took in what he said, and the carseat beside him, and it felt like an alternate universe. "think it's an impromptu introduce your daughter to your high school girlfriend day?" she stepped closer to the counter they were behind, smile immediately tugging at her lips at the sight of the baby. who didn't melt at a kid? "if that day isn't today, i can totally come back another time," she added in, hoping to keep things light.
( NATALIA DYER | FEMALE | SHE/HER | TWENTY-FOUR ) β β β it's just been another long week in boring - ass hawkins. isn't that right, NANCY WHEELER ? shit, i guess they can't hear me over CALL ME by BLONDIE playing through the headphones of their walkman. it looks like they're gonna be late for WORK as a JOURNALIST AT THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR. did you know NANCY has been in hawkins for THEIR WHOLE LIFE ? yeah, their family and friends describe them as DETERMINED, but i've seen them be INDECISIVE too ! i would also say they remind me of pink skies, handwritten letters, & saving everyone but yourself, but is that weird ? i guess nothing's too weird for this little town, huh ?
BASICS
Name: Nancy Elizabeth Wheeler
Nickname(s): Nance
Birthday: December 3rd (24)
Occupation: Journalist at the Indianapolis Star
Gender: Female
Pronouns: She/Her
Sexuality: Bi-curious, but way too stuck in the "expectations" put on her by her parents to do much about it.
As soon as she could, Nancy left Hawkins for Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. Being away helped her tremendously when it came to her independence and figuring herself out. Unfortunately, despite running, her guilt from everything back home still caught up to her. It was hard to stay away from it all when things with the upside down kept popping up every trip home.
While at school, she tried finding a new normal and joined a sorority. Even though she liked the friendship and philanthropy aspects of Greek life, she couldn't help but feel like it was all fake.
She got through the four years and graduated summa cum laude with her degree in Journalism.
After graduating, she began working at the Boston Chronicle where she met Christopher Anderson. The two were together for two years before he proposed and she accepted due to the pressure from society and her parents. The engagement ended just a few months ago when Nancy realized that that wasn't what she wanted and she needed the time to focus on her career.
Nancy had never planned to move back to Hawkins, but the Chronicle crumbled and she got a job offer from the Star. Knowing it'd be crazy to turn it down, and having her mom telling her 'just come home, Nance,' for weeks after the failed engagement, she packed her bags and moved into her own apartment on the outskirts of Hawkins.
We slept together! Is that what you want to know!? It doesnβt matter! Itβs all bullshit! It has nothing to do with Barb and sheβs missing and something terrible happened to her, I know it. I know it! And no one is listening to me!
