I love the friendship between Tohru, Uo and Hana so very much. The sense of support and care each brings manifests in different ways but it is never unequal. It’s the sort of friendship shown without any expectation of receiving anything in return. It’s simply, “hey, you’re very important to me and I’ve always got your back”, and there’s never ever any doubt about it. Everybody deserves something like that, and I will forever appreciate Fruits Basket for bringing us wholesome and healthy friendships between women.

I have ~thoughts~ about Akigure

I think when I first read Fruits Basket as a 12yr old I Did Not Get their relationship, but sooo many things have become clear to me now about it. Shigure is one of the only people that is totally happy to be bonded to Akito. Maybe it’s a dog thing, but he is completely loyal to her, and he loves her so much. However, his bond is not JUST the bond of the zodiac. He genuinely loves her. Because he loves her, he wants what is best for her, and healthiest for her, which would be separating from the zodiac bonds, because she’s overly dependent on them and it’s twisting her views of love.

If he was nice to her, she’d let the zodiac bonds make her walk all over him. Shigure wants to prove that his love is special because it ISN’T the zodiac bonds. He won’t worship her no matter what. But he will LOVE her no matter what. That’s what makes him different from everyone else, particularly Kureno. He doesn’t love Akito out of obligation. He chooses it, every single day.

Akito, however, is soooo fucked up by the curse, that she constantly worries Shigure will leave her. Because he doesn’t act like an obedient zodiac member and worship her unconditionally, she worries that he doesn’t love her. But he does. Just not as a deity. He loves her as a normal human girl. I think that’s why whenever she does something fucked up, he does it right back. (I’m not saying that that’s good or healthy, but like. it kind of makes sense). He’s proving that she’s not above him, and if she does something to hurt his feelings, he’s going to do it back to her. She’s not above repercussions with him the way she is everyone else.

I think Akito knows that Shigure is the one she really wants. But she’s so worried about whether he’s going to leave her eventually, that she can’t be with him. She chooses Kureno because she can force him to ‘love’ her, and she has that kind of control. So she isn’t alone when Shigure isn’t around. That’s why she can’t accept that Shigure loves her until the curse is officially broken, because then she knows that he actually loves her for her, and he won’t leave.

I think Akigure is really beautiful actually? I know it’s fucked up, but honestly, I love that about it. They have a level of intimacy that’s just absolutely unmatched. Shigure does things that will hurt her short term, in the name of breaking the curse and saving her long term. Honestly it’s kind of like Haru and Rin.
