It’s that itch beneath the skin
no matter how much you scratch it can’t be relieved.
It’s that scratching, that scratching against surfaces
that serves no purposes worth pursuing.
It’s the no matter how hard you try
it’s the no matter how jaded, how damaged, how cold
you try to be dance of the devilish and persistent and the
inability to hold onto all you are and all you try to be.
It’s that feeling that haunts, that lingers, that taunts
it pulls and pulls and pulls until heartstrings snap and
rhythmic beatings of heart turn to an empty chorus of rap
but you’re still singing to the same old song and dance
because you don’t know how to release it
nor do you understand how to embrace it
so you dance and you dance and you sing and you hope that
you forget the words one day but they come natural like instincts
as though emotions are something meant to
be felt and heard instead of sheltered.
To what do we bow and break and yield and
try so desperately to shake
to what to we owe the pleasure of displeasure
of ache and want and need and yet no strength to act
no strength to resist
So we sit in wait for the drumming sound to silence
for the cheap records to stop scratching away at itches that
just cannot be quelled by common fingers
for cheap beats to regress into pleasing sounds
Unlit cancer rests between the chapped and rough lips of Luce Worth as he readies himself in the bathroom mirror. He’s grinning at himself out of vanity(his good looks are something worth cherishing and everyone is entitled to their patron sin) white teeth glimmering against light-streaked glass, pale blue eyes piercing like a knife but soft as the sky. Slender fingers fiddle against thinly stripped silk, fold, loop, tie, four in hand knot, pulling off casual with a simple white button-down shirt.
Another once over in the mirror. Vanity, but can one really make such a claim to sin when one does not like everything seen in a reflection? Thoughts wander, take hold, and he’s bothered for only those few moments between self-disgust and reaching for the little orange bottle in the cabinet.
Just one to take the edge off.
Pill. Water.
Cigarettes aren’t enough any more(which brings him to discard the one already between his lips). Just one, followed by water. Dry lips are relieved by the moisture but cuts and chaps do not heal so quickly and are merely sated for the moment.
There’s an exhale after swallowing the water and non-prescription RX medication, a breath of contentment and neck stretches as head tilts backwards, eyes refocusing against bright and direct artificial light.
The remaining pills rattle and the shallow contact of plastic container against porcelain sink echoes against ceramic tiled surfaces and Luce leans over, forehead pressing against cold mirrored glass. The contrasting feeling of lightness and heavy weight in his head is a pleasant rush of immediate high and lips curl lazily into what he intends to be a grin.
What is he doing putting on a tie and a fancy shirt only to blend into a world that he’s not sure he wants to be part of any more? When has he ever cared to impress anyone? Never. He glances at himself in the mirror again, whose blue eyes are those? Whose blurred features catch in his eye? Surely not his, for Luce Worth would never wear such a mask, never put on such a façade. He scoffs, frowning immediately.
The edge is still there.
Just a couple more. It’ll take the edge off.
Pills. Water. Just one more. Repeat steps one and two.
This time moisture lingers on the corners of his mouth; he doesn’t care enough to wipe it away. Perhaps the visage in the mirror will be pleasing he hopes as his head tilts again to catch blurred sight of ordinarily sharp features. Blond hair is the only thing distinguishable from vague tones of flesh. Blue eyes are blended against abstract shapes and drops of water on the mirror. Had he splashed upwards? But he can’t see his eyes any more, the eyes he couldn’t bear to look into for fear and loathing. Those blue eyes did not hold who he was any more and they looked at him with such scorn.
Just one more to take the edge off.
Just one.
Pill. Water. Repeat.
Repeat.
Repeat.
PUKES ONTO KEYBOARD.
Tender moments are seldom between them but, somewhere hidden in the depths of exchanging punches and and harsh words, they exist. They’re rare and hidden like delicate and fragile treasures that would shatter at the mere light of day. The mere touch of mortal hands would taint and deprive them of value, the linger of human eyes would appraise incorrectly leaving priceless artefacts with worthless labels. Moments like these are not to be shared with those who are not involved, with outsiders, with wandering glances and gazes and long disapproving stares at the languid movements of tongues in cheek, against lips, and teeth catching dried, chapped, raw skin. No one is to hear the sighs and breaths and occasional whispers of profanity against collarbones and flexing tendons, no one is to intrude on the rare tenderness that is displayed between rich and hard grinding of hips, filthy words, grasping fingers.
Tender moments are redefined with moments that are only slightly more tame that usual interaction, less punching and fighting and more kissing and pressing and touching and hitches in breathing. More secrecy and protection of the odd intimacy, less public display of rough and rowdy foreplay(that onlookers think nothing of besides fighting boys, they are not enlightened or subscribed to the exclusive club after all.)
Some patients can’t be saved
Wrist deep in blood, cursing breaths, frantic and shaking hands, part of Luce already knows it’s over, gone, it’s done there is nothing more he can do, but even so he continues working hopelessly on his client. Incoherent mumblings fall into the air around him, can’t be gone, can’t be gone, blood is still flowing from the wound he was trying so hard to stitch.
but that burden’s not on you
Can’t be gone. Gone. No.
some patients can’t be saved
His fingers lost the needle ages ago but his hands still go through to motions of sewing what cannot be salvaged. Good doctors don’t let their patients die on the operating table, good doctors don’t tremble and shake and continue work on corpses bathed in dim and unflattering artificial light. Perhaps he was dead the moment he walked through the door clutching at impossible wounds to his abdomen, dripping blood on the cold and dingy cement floor like it was out of fashion.
but that burden’s not on you
But pre-wrapped and packaged to death’s front door or not the moment he stopped breathing was on Luce’s operating table and it was his wrists and hands that were covered in the blood that he couldn’t get back in fast enough. And even if this stranger’s recovery was not written in the stars his death certificate would be written in Luce’s script, messy, illegible, blood-stained scrawls of a failed doctor.

there are other differences...
John asks what the differences are and Jade offers nothing but a shrug and a demure smile. Just things, she says, her lips caught between her overgrown front teeth and she absently begins fiddling with the keyboard controls for John’s silly Ghostbuster’s game.
John persists, truly curious because he honestly cannot define Davesprite and Dave as separate beings. Dave is Dave.
Jade shakes her head again and reassures John that he doesn’t have to worry about it. And his face turns into skepticism and a little bit of frustration but he sighs and says okay fine, let’s just play Ghostbuster’s.
Relieved, Jade looks back to the screen with a smile and a flushed face that she hopes John doesn’t notice.
The biggest difference of them all, the one she can not overlook the way she overlooks the cawing and the wings, is that he is not her Dave.
you are not allowed to touch Me. My fingers will graze your skin, lips will claim your throat I will draw blood against the surface and breath from your lungs and they will clash like cymbals in sweet harmony with the music My fingers play across your ribs, your thighs, your spine. But you cannot play My skin until I give you word. You can grasp and cling to sheets, blankets, headboard, until knuckles are white and fingers weak from tension. you may speak, I grant you the privilege of words, the opportunity to MAKE Me want to let you touch Me and you should feel oh so honoured. you must be convincing, you must prove to Me that your fingers are desperate to curl in My hair, to claim My throat with a cutting precision and to drown Me in ecstasy with your lips, your hands, your everything. Tell me where your fingers would wander, how your hands would hold My wrists and you would make Me keen for you the way you yearn for Me now as I pull my lips away from the kiss that I never offered you. you are not being a very good boy.
artifacts
you’re damaged
but you are not worth any less
than that without cracks or scars
it makes you priceless
you are an artifact, one that must be
kept safe
let me guard you in a stronghold
you’re damaged and i don’t want to fix you
i want to embrace you for your flaws and
in exchange i’ll show you how damaged i am
you can peek at my cracks and chips
run your fingers along the spaces of my heart
and body where pieces are left missing
together we’ll be artifacts
priceless and treasured
keep me safe but do not fix me
for i cannot be tinkered with
like common clockwork
my spaces cannot be filled with
out of era substances. The damage is already done
and you can soothe and soothe and kiss and
touch but do not fix and please try not to break
and i know your inner workings
cannot be touched or tampered with
in such a similar way to mine
and I am perfectly fine with that
just let me lay with you, inside you
let me soothe and touch let me kiss
and let my fingers fill the space between yours
as our hands lie unbroken and entwined and we breathe
easy now knowing we are worn and tired and broken
and we do not need to be fixed
we do not need a worth defined by a price
we define each other with writings against skin and with
scars we don’t need to hide
7 Minutes in Heaven
They told her the game was called Seven Minutes in Heaven...
from one second to one minute.
His tongue in her mouth made her sick. It made her want to squirm and cry and push him away. His muscled frame held her frail body with one arm, pulling her against him in the dark. Her eyes were open as he invaded her mouth and she was sure that his were closed. It was dark though so she couldn’t tell at all what he looked like as his lips slid clumsily against hers and his tongue continued to crawl in her mouth like a slug. She never said that she wanted this but she was chosen for this and she was expected to go through with it. There wasn’t much space in the closet, it was filled with jackets and shoes that smelled like mothballs and feet. And rather than engaging herself fully in the kiss she could only wonder to herself what mothballs were made of and why moths hated them so much. She wondered whose shoes she was standing on and whose jackets she was between.
from one minute to two
And then the hand that wasn’t holding her body was suddenly on her thigh, a few inches below the hem of her skirt and he was rubbing her leg up and down, putting vocals into the sloppy kiss now. She still did nothing, her hands were both on his chest, unmoving. Her lips were making an attempt to match his and her tongue was trying to dodge his like a fly trying to make a desperate escape from a swatter. His hand was up her skirt now, resting on her inner thigh, she wasn’t wearing underwear because of the game of truth or dare that they had played earlier that night. She picked dare.
from two minutes to three
Her unmoving hands gripped at the front of his shirt and maybe he took that as a sign of her arousal rather than a sign of her discomfort. His hand was now between her legs, his fingers invading her privacy, and she felt nothing exciting. She didn’t know where his hands had been.
from three minutes to four
She couldn't feel her lips, they were numb and wet from his ravaging mouth and his nose was pressing her glasses into her face, it hurt and it was uncomfortable but she didn't say anything about it. He wouldn't care. His hand was still where she didn't want it and she still felt nothing. His mouth tasted like the five cigarettes he had smoked mixed with the three shots of tequila from earlier. Before all of this, her breath only tasted of McDonald's fries and the single black cherry cooler she had been drinking the entire night. She was relieved when he finally removed his hand from between her legs but was pushing her skirt all the way up now. His lips finally lost suction with hers and trailed down her neck with sloppy and hot presses. The taste of tequila, cigarettes and McDonald's left in her mouth wasn't pleasant.
from four minutes to five
both of his hands slithered along her waist, under her tee shirt. He was pushing the fabric up over her breasts and kissing along her collarbone. Both of his hands clutched at her breasts simultaneously, they weren't even enough to warrant a handful. At least he had enough courtesy to keep the fabric of her bra between his hands and her skin. He didn't seem to mind that her hands still weren't moving and that she wasn't giving any sign of enjoyment. He just continued kneading at the tender swells on her chest. She looked up to the ceiling, her night vision was starting to kick in a little and she could make out the vague stucco pattern above her. She hated stucco.
from five minutes to six
His arms wrapped around her body and searched for the hooks of her bra; he struggled with unhooking it. She sighed.
from six minutes to seven
His lips were on hers again even though she had just regained the feeling of her lips. And his kissing was harder now, the rims of her glasses pressing against the bridge of her nose and her lips pressing against her teeth. His breathing was heavy, it was a strange sound. He was panting like a dog, breathing on her face with the horrible stench of ashtrays and alcohol. The door opened, light shining on her half-clothed body. He pulled away from her and she tried to straighten out her clothing that he had disorganized. They all laughed at her and made weird jokes about what had happened, except they weren't jokes.
...but to her, it might as well have been an eternity in purgatory.
Change of Heart Part 1
He felt the cold press of metal on his neck and he was surprised at first. It had been weeks since he had had an encounter -sexual or otherwise- with the enchanting RED spy and it was an honour in his mind to have her in his presence again. He raised his hands over his head, grinning, "Oh you got me," he chuckled, his tone taking on a playful lilt to it as he allowed his sniper gun to rest on the windowsill.
Unfortunately, the woman wasn't here to play. She didn't answer him with a coy and sultry response like she usually would have in this situation. Instead, she increased the pressure of her knife on his neck, speaking not a single word in response to him.
He felt cool blood trickling down his throat and that's when he knew that something was wrong, that this wasn't a friendly visit of hers. With a single swift motion his elbow crushed into her solarplexus and she removed her weapon from his throat as she drew a few steps back from the hit. He took this as an opportunity to grab her wrist and press his thumb into the pulse point to which her hand responded by dropping the knife. He swatted his foot at the blade, sending it spinning across the floorboard to a safe distance away from him. He kept a hold of her wrist, staring down at the much shorter woman, but she didn't look up at him. He gaze remained on the floor. "Sheila..." he began before her knee rose to his groin and he keeled over in pain, as he did that, her eblow came down on his back which sent him falling to the floor on his stomach.
The heels of her shoes hurried a few feet away and he flipped over to see where she had gone. He assumed that she had hurried to grab her knife from across the floor; but he was mistaken, he watched as she held his machete in her hand and rushed at him with it. He managed to roll out of the way before she stabbed the tip into the floorboards, leaving her stuck there for a moment, but only a moment before she came at him again, grunting with effort as she pounced on him. He managed to land a punch on her face, knocking her mask off of her face and onto the floor beside them.
And then she looked down at him, his blade held high above her head, glinting in the sunlight that shone through the window, and her eyes welling up with what looked to be tears. The Sniper held his hands up in an attempt to defend himself from the woman if she were to bring the blade down on him. She was hesitating though, just holding her arms up, staring down at him with teary eyes and shaking arms.
Weeks ago they had been indulging in each other's bodies, meeting during ceasefires and weekends to take out any sexual frustrations that they had. They were having a good time. They had a good thing going. They would even end up talking afterward. Then one day she stopped coming to see him altogether. She wouldn't even visit him during battle for a fight. He assumed that she was just playing hard to get, letting him build up his tension before she came to him again.
But looking up at her like this, seeing her face as she held his own weapon ready to kill him, he knew there was something more to it than that. There had to be more to it than that. The tears streamed down her face but her brows were furrowed angrily. Exactly what was she feeling right now....
Why was she here ready to kill him? Why was she hesitating to do so? And more importantly, why was she crying about it?

RAIN
Everything significant in Nikolas' life seemed to end in rain. Thunder would tumble in the clouds, looming in the distance, and suddenly the air would be a million droplets to drown him. The black clouds chose him, they moved over his head alone. It was as though the storms waited to draw a close to each chapter of his life, as though they were the final toll to tell him when everything was over. Tonight the rain fell in sheets, masked in the darkness of the city around him; a dim, flickering streetlamp was his only assistant to sight. The lines of raindrops mocked him as they hissed through the air, collided with the cement around him, flooded over the curb of the street, snickered amd murmured into the gutters as they leaked into the flooding grates. The hardhearted rain drizzled artlessly over the thin sheet metal overhang that sheltered his already soaking figure from the downpour. The water was creating uneven puddles just out of range of his feet. Spilling out of his hand was a nearly empty bottle of sleeping pills. Motionless he lay there, his breathing shallow as he awaited the imminent end to his life. His eyelids began to fall heavily over his pitiful chocolate pools, vision already blurred by side effects. He began to slip into the abysmal sleep that he had been seeking so desperately. Finally the rain would close the final chapter on Nikolas' life, the final chapter of the poorly written pages, a rushed ending, a cliffhanger that no one would care about. Consciousness escaped him completely and his long awaited sleep took hold of him, engulfing him in Death's sweet and loving embrace. The metallic ping of the water falling above him vanished with the sound of his breathing. The rain would no longer have the opportunity to ruin him. Nikolas was finally free form the merciless games that the storms played with his life, and he had finally broken the chains that bound his unhappiest moments to the seemingly insignificant droplets. Only a split second seemed to pass before Nikolas reopened his eyes. He felt warmth hugging his body and a bright light shone from above him. He squinted, adjusting to the vivid atmosphere. Heaven blessed him with its iridescence; a sigh of relief escaped him, he was exactly where he wanted to be. "Finally..." he exhaled, his voice barely coming through in a coarse tone. He reached up and placed his palm on his forehead, only to meet the wet fabric of a warm facecloth and he sat up, all of a sudden realizing that he wasn't in the paradise that he was hoping for. It seemed that Heaven had decided to leave him to write a meaningless epilogue. He felt like shit, his head ached, his mouth was dry, and his lips were sore and rough like a thick grained sandpaper. He glanced around, simply wondering where he was; this room was foreign to him and the comfortable queen sized bed was a stranger to his body. His limbs felt weak, his legs felt disconnected from his body, and he couldn't feel anything but pain all over. Across the room he noticed the bottle of pills sitting on a dresser. He cursed them as an unsuccessful remedy to his life and he laid back down, resting his head on the supple cloud that supported his neck. Approaching footsteps filled his ears, they were light and quick; he watched the door, waiting to see who the spoiler of his ruin was. The doorknob turned and a second later the entire door was open and a young woman walked into the room, her eyes set on him. Bright blue eyes held between them a a narrow, straight nose, they were positioned directly above rosy cheeks and directly below a set of thin eyebrows upon a narrow forehead. Long, chestnut hair curled loosely along the sides of her face and along her neck. A curt smile suddenly came across thin, flesh-colored lips and she stood in the doorway and stared at him. "So, sleeping beauty finally opens his eyes?" She leaned herself against the dresser and waited for some sort of response, but received no such courtesy. She rolled her eyes and snatched the bottle of pills in her hand, there was no rattle, indicating that the bottle was empty. She raised the bottle close to her face and examined it. "You'd think that someone trying to kill themselves would at least spring for the double strength." Nikolas clenched at the blanket over his legs, her words hit him like a boulder, she was painfully reminding him that he had failed at taking his own life, that he was pitiful for still being here. She pierced him with cold blue eyes, awaiting once again for some form of response from him. Her patience was wasted and she pushed herself away form the dresser, "not much of a talker, hm?" a sigh slipped through her lips as her steps led her to the bedside. He avoided eye contact with her, his muscles tensed and became more sore with every word that spilled from this woman's tongue. Who did she think she was? Why had she decided to pick up a complete stranger and bring him back to her house? He froze and forgot to breathe for an instant before he exhaled, "Why did you bring me here?" he forced out through dry lips and a constricted throat. "You looked like you needed help," her face remained neutral, she didn't smile, nor did she frown at him, she was giving him nothing but a default expression. "I didn't ask for your help." "But you got it anyway." "Do you regularly pick up strangers off the street?" " Sometimes." And her tone was flat, as though she was no longer going to dignify him with emotion in her speech. He didn't say anything more, knowing that he probably wasn't going to receive a straight answer from her. "Do you need anything?" An abrupt question on her end, and her voice filled with something that resembled concern. He just looked up at her, glaring in his mind at her and he shook his head, not wanting to speak again through the dryness of his mouth. She said nothing to his response and simply left the room, leaving the door open behind her. He listened to her hurried steps and then made out the sound of a phone beeping and soon, a one-sided conversation began. "I won't be able to make it tonight," was the opening line that he could clearly make out, "something came up," a ten second elapse allowed the person on the other end to speak, "work called, they need me there." She stopped again, "They couldn't get a hold of anyone else!" Her tone elevated and an obvious annoyance was caught in her words, "Goodbye," was the solid, final word of the conversation as the phone was slammed onto something that he assumed to be a table. And then he heard her walking a little farther away, and then her footsteps drew nearer again. She entered the room, a teacup perched neatly between her palms. She placed it on the night stand beside him and watched as he eyed it with suspicion. "It's not poisoned," she assured. "why did you tell that person you had to go to work?" he asked, half-expecting her to call him out for listening to her phone call. "I doubt that my boyfriend would take kindly to the fact that I canceled our date because there was another man in my bed." Maybe that was the closest thing to a joke he had heard from her since he woke up. "The tea will help your throat," she said to him, quickly changing the subject. Nikolas reached for the cup and blew on the surface before he took a careful sip of the hot liquid. "What's your name?" She was now sitting on the end of the bed, her head turned sideways to face him. He cleared his throat and placed the teacup back on the table beside him, "Nikolas." "I'm Naomi," she introduced before continuing, "can I ask you something, Nikolas?" He thought it over for a moment, biting the inside of his lip in thought but finally answered, "sure." "Why did you do it?" And like a shot to the heart everything filled his mind at once, everything that had brought him here, he had almost forgotten what had brought him to the woman's house but her inquiry made him remember it all too quickly. "My fiance cheated on me and kicked me out of my own apartment," he answered, hoping that it would fulfill her curiosity. "That's it?" Her cold response sent arrows through his veins, "what do you mean 'That's it'?!" he snapped. "It just doesn't seem like a good reason to do what you did," she rose to her feet, staring down at him now with her arms crossed over her chest. "then what, pray tell, is a good reason?" He wondered out of pure frustration. "There is no good reason for people to kill themselves," Nikolas winced at the lack of a euphemism, "it's a selfish act and anyone who does it or even attempts it is a complete idiot." He flinched at her words. He was just another idiot to her, just another man thinking that he was deserving of death that he had no more to live for. "My heart was broken, what else could I have done?" "Moved on." The answer she gave him was quick as though she had been anticipating his question. "With what?" "Your life." "How?" She shook her head, "I can't tell you that." She leaned down to the bedside table and opened the drawer, removing a rattling bottle of Advil, extra strength. She closed the drawer and slammed the bottle down on the hard surface beside him, "but if you can't figure anything out for yourself, here's your answer." Nikolas listened to the sound of the pills and it reassured him in some way, it made him feel like he had a second chance to get what he wanted. She was giving him a second chance to die, and he was thankful to her for that. Listening to this woman talk down to him, criticize him about his choice, it made him sick to the stomach. Naomi turned to leave without another word to him and she closed the door behind her this time. He stared out the window at the rain that splayed itself against the glass, streaking and creating abstract images. The rain had succeeded in its purpose; it had drawn a close to another chapter in his life, it told him something that he hadn't known before. Tonight the rain told him that his life without peace, without sanity, without truth, was over. And it gave him a new purpose, it wrote him a new ending. He reached over and grabbed the thing he needed the most. He sipped the tea carefully again. His mouth was still dry.
