“Well perhaps someone will sweep you off your feet one day and it will be something you want, you never know.” Gen countered. 

“It’s highly unlikely,” Nari said, adding, “and I’m okay with that.” She didn’t want Genevieve mistaking her realism for yearning. “I will leave the dating  to others like you and Caleb.”

“I’d do it if it kept the mansion safe,” she stated confidently. The strain would probably knock her out, but it could prevent many more deaths. “I hope so too. Because I probably won’t try it again afterward.”

“Well...” Nari said, looking out at the grounds, “as much as I wish I could see it happen, I hope it doesn’t come to that. It wouldn’t do for you to overexert yourself.” And if the attack never came that would be all the better. “Still, thank you for the mental image of those goons being chased by trees.”

“I guess - I just remember my parents and how happy they were together and, I mean it just seemed nice. Wouldn’t you want something like that one day? Someone you can depend on?”

Nari supposed it made sense that Genevieve’s parents had been happy together. Gigi’s positive attitude had to come from somewhere. “I prefer depending on myself,” she replied without thinking about it. “It was simply never something I wanted.”

caleb-miller:

“I’m sure it’ll be soon,” Caleb said, although he was anything but sure. No one really was. Caleb hated the idea of the place where he lived being attacked by the Brotherhood, but there was nothing he or anyone else could do to prevent it. All they could do was lay in wait and ward off the enemy once they showed up.

“You’re right,” Nari said, nodding. Standing up, she stretched her arms over her head, leaning left and then right. “I’ll leave you to the rest of your stretching.” Heading towards the door of the training room, she stopped and looked back at him. “I do hope things get better for you.” She didn’t mention his girl troubles by name, but was confident he’d know what she was talking about. Then she left.

“Fear is the determining factor in human life. Fear is the state of nature. The sooner we acknowledge that, the sooner we can create peace,” he said, recalling his study of Hobbes a few months ago. “It’s simple philosophy.”

“If it’s so simple, if fear is such a determining factor, then why hasn’t fear determined that you to shut up and leave me alone?” Completely forgetting her granola, Nari stood from her seat at the table. “Don’t take this as fear’s determination. I’m simply tired of listening to you.” That said, she left Logan there.

“We’re X-Men. Ideal solutions have never been the way we rolled,” she said lightly. Sometimes she wished that they could, but unfortunately, that was rarely ever an option. She smiled with Nari. “I can. I usually prefer not to because it takes a lot of effort, but if it keeps the Brotherhood away then it’d be worth it.”

Nari looked over at the trees and imagined what it would look like if they were to suddenly chase the Brotherhood away from the mansion, standing up like giants. “Of course. It must be incredibly difficult. But if by any chance it does happen, I hope I get to see it.”

“Remind me how rich your parents are again?” Lina grinned. “Your life should be turned into a movie. We can give you an uninteresting love interest too. Or we can give you two! Just to make sure it sells, you know?” She tipped her feet up, stretching out like a cat, limbs looped over the arms of the chair. “It works a lot better usually with drink. Did you try it drunk?”

“I don’t keep track of my parents’ finances any longer as I haven’t had contact with them since I was sixteen. But when I left, it was somewhere around...in U.S. Dollars it would be $5.4 billion.” She said this matter-of-factly, as if it were quite expected. “My life is not so interesting. It was boring really. And any love interests would just make it fictional.” Nari shook her head. “I don’t drink except on very rare occasions. Empty calories.”

“Right. I mean we’re x-men, it’s silly to be in a relationship with someone, right now at least.” 

“Honestly, I believe relationships are unwise for anyone, x-men or not. That’s just my opinion. Plenty of people still embark on them, however, so there must be something to it for them.”

“It doesn’t,” he grumbled at her, not wanting her or anyone to think that he actually cares when they think. “Oh really? What do you have to offer then? At least with what I said, people can be more aware and try to take out Ethereal first.”

“Obviously it does or you wouldn’t care that I think it does.” Nari glared at Logan. “No, with what you said, you instill your captive audience with more fear about what’s to come. Perhaps someone will attempt to take out Ethereal first, but what’s the point if it’s so easy to be possessed?”

caleb-miller:

Nari and Caleb had been getting on rather well lately, so he was surprised by her tone. Caleb supposed this was a rough time for all them. The stress was starting to grow. It felt like they were hamsters stuck in a cage, waiting for someone to come in and destroy their one source of entertainment. He shrugged at her apologize, “It’s fine, I get it.” He gave her a questioning look, not letting the issue go, “No, what do you want to say? The situation is what?”

Nari shook her head. “It’s nothing. I’m just bored of waiting. If I’m to get the chance to redeem myself for the last time we met the Brotherhood, I’d like it to come sooner rather than later.” Nari moved into upward facing dog, stretching her torso. When she finished, she sat with her legs crossed. The truth was that she worried what might happen to the people she found vaguely tolerable if the mansion was attacked. It was an uncomfortable feeling for her to say the least.

“I’m sorry - I don’t mean to unload all this on you, I just, I don’t really have anyone to talk about it to.” She sighed lightly. “Boys are stupid.” She said trying to laugh it off like it wasn’t a big deal. 

Nari shook her head. “No need to apologize. I may not understand why people allow themselves to consider such relationships, but I’m not completely...unsympathetic.” She gave Genevieve an attempt at a smile. “People are stupid.”

caleb-miller:

Caleb stretched his arms out behind his back, taking in Nari’s words as the blood started flowing back to muscles aside from his legs. “Of course there’s a lot at stake. There’s always a lot at stake.” That was the very reason that they assembled into teams and did their best to protect civilians. The Brotherhood presented more of a threat than just trashing the mansion. “And what’s the other option?” Caleb asked. “Attack without knowing their plan?”

“I know that,” Nari snapped. “And I know that there’s no other option. I’m not stupid.” It was the lack of a solution that really bothered her. No matter what angle she came at it from, she couldn’t possibly think of a way to avoid putting the mansion at risk. She moved into a low lunge, then a runner’s stretch. “I apologize,” she said. “This whole situation is...” Trailing off, Nari shook her head. “Never mind. Let’s just stretch.”

Jax bites back a graceless snort as Nari beautifully fell down on herself. He let the rain go, falling all over himself and soaking through his blazer, button up shirt and jeans, and made his way to the girl. “Miss Kim.” He politely offers his hand for her to get up and holds the rain above her head with a wave. “I promise I won’t tell anyone.” There was a certain kind of frequency they met in a way, probably because of their very nature. Or maybe it was just him. 

Nari glared up at Jax, but accepted his hand, using it to pull herself up off of the ground. “Thank you,” she said, begrudgingly, trying not to look too embarrassed. With the rain no longer pelting her, she gathered her hair and tied it back. “I’d say this is horrible weather, but you must like it.” The fact that rain could fall meant that it was too warm for her liking, though the moisture did make it easier to wield her powers.

“I just - why would he kiss Charlotte if he liked me? It - hurts. It’s difficult to think about anyways.” Gen admitted. She hadn’t really talked about it with anyone and it was eating her up inside because she still liked Caleb. 

Nari was surprised that the other woman would want to speak with her about the whole affair. “I don’t know,” she admitted. “Men often take anything and everything they can. But I did not picture Caleb as this type. “I suppose people make mistakes sometimes...” It was a pretty colossal mistake to make, especially before a relationship has truly started.

“You make a strong point. I guess my point was the disbelief that anyone, even you can waltz. I have never really been at a place where proper waltzing takes place.” Lina had visited a few clubs, but had even enjoyed dancing at certain house parties, before she’d come to this school. “I do like, normal dancing. The kind that only really works if you’re a bit smashed.”

“I was at many places were waltzing took place. Galas, charity dinners, receptions...It happened all the time. I would attend with my family.” Nari rolled her eyes. “Normal dancing. I could never understand normal dancing.” She couldn’t see how anyone found it fun. She didn’t much enjoy waltzing either. Dancing with other people always caused her to feel anxious.

Caleb nodded in agreement, moving over to the wall so that he could properly stretch his legs after his run. “Definitely. The waiting is the worst part in situations like these. It makes me feel like we’re just sitting ducks,” he sighed as he switched stretching positions. “Which is ridiculous because we aren’t, we have a plan, we know what we’re doing.”

Nari sighed, reaching to touch her toes, then easily gripping the arches of her feet. “We do have a plan, but that isn’t so much of a guarantee that we’ll succeed, is it? There’s still a lot at stake.” A lot of people who would be in danger, she added in her mind. “And we are still sitting ducks. We are still waiting for the chance that the Brotherhood might attack. It’s the worst.”

“It doesn’t matter anyways, he’s well - Charlotte found herself in the mix and we’ll i’ve decided it’s just better to be friends with him.” She said vaguely. “Me as well - Its good to have a distraction from the possible attack and that stupid gossip blog.” 

“Ah...well, that sounds complicated. Better to remain friends then,” Nari agreed. Relationships, even friendships, were tedious to begin with. Add in extra elements of complication and they became even worse wastes of time and energy. “Agreed. Nothing worth reading on there.”
