Catalina Law. Known as Lina. 20. SHAPESHIFTER. The power to transform and reshape the form of one’s body. The user can shapeshift their form, transforming and reshaping themselves potentially down to their genetic and cellular structure. They can impersonate others or enhance one’s body for combat, either by turning into animals, monsters or make the body stronger. Users with particularly flexible abilities can manipulate their form at will, combining abilities, traits, etc.

“I don’t keep track of my parents’ finances any longer as I haven’t had contact with them since I was sixteen. But when I left, it was somewhere around…in U.S. Dollars it would be $5.4 billion.” She said this matter-of-factly, as if it were quite expected. “My life is not so interesting. It was boring really. And any love interests would just make it fictional.” Nari shook her head. “I don’t drink except on very rare occasions. Empty calories.” 

“Cool, that’s a lot. I can’t even react to that amount, because I can’t even imagine that much money. My mind can only get my head around the hundreds. Do you still get left money?” Where Lina had grown up, her parents had told her it was a little rude to talk about money in such a way. Why would it be rude though? People just weren’t secure enough to acknowledge that we all want money. “Good point. None of us want a beer belly. Must keep that in mind.”

“Sounds cute, but I don’t think it’s here? I could help you look if you’d like.”

“Yeah, sure, I’ve pretty much searched all the dorms I think, at least the feasible ones. There’s a couple of people that I still don’t know. I see their face, and I’m like, who are you? Where did you come from?” She beckoned her out the door. “This scarf is so good, you don’t understand how soft it is. And it doesn’t smell new. But also doesn’t smell like crustiness.”

“Actually their rituals usually involved lots of drinking and hallucinogenics. It was the initiation rites that made things a lot more complicated for women especially. They were… uh… very sexual.” He felt his cheeks redden at the thought and only hoped that she didn’t want any real details about what they pertained to. “They’re superior because they can see things that no one else ever thinks about. Why are we here really? What is nature and what is reality?” He managed to stop himself before he ended up going too far.

“Oh,” Lina frowned. “That sounds disappointing. Not that I’m not up for some things, but like, I’m not crazy, you know?” This looked like it was entering uncomfortable areas for Logan, and she may pick her cruel moments, but talking about weird sex rites was perhaps a conversation for another time. “I’m pretty sure people think about that stuff all the time. Just because someone didn’t write a book or whatever - I mean, I assumed they wrote a book - that doesn’t mean that they don’t think these things.”

Caleb gave Catalina a small smile. Despite her facial expression, he knew what she was getting at. “Don’t you hate when cheesy advice like that is actually right?”

“Yeah, it’s the worst. I don’t like cheese. I don’t like things that are overdone. Although even disliking overdone things is overdone these days.” The more she talked, she began to forget her awkwardness at being caught at a different time. “It’s kind of hard to be original with good advice. It’s pretty constant. Love yourself and all that. Live, laugh, love.” She rolled her eyes. “You can’t just tell someone to do something and suddenly they’ll feel it.” Lina paused, remembering where she was, the things that she could forget were possible here. “Unless you’re able to control feelings.”

“The next time I do the hedges I’ll let you know. Our groundskeeper might like that he has a little less to do,” she told her, shaking her head. The thought of doing all of that for St. Patrick’s Day was ridiculous, but she laughed anyway, the image alone making her smile. “Oh yes, the staff would definitely kill me,” she said. As she walked outside, she turned back toward Catalina. “I’m Irish, so St. Patrick’s Day is always a lot of fun. My brother used to say that you’re not Irish if you’re not drinking on St. Patty’s Day.

“Are you? I’m not Irish but I had an Irish friend, back at home, he was pretty great. A lot of other non-Irish people drink on St. Patty’s day as well. Thanks for the day, it’s a great one.” She winked, linking arms with her, as if to dance a jig. “I have got to stick with you next St. Patty’s day then. We’ll have a great time.” The brother term stuck in her mind though. As an only child, but particularly a mutant one, she couldn’t imagine having a sibling. “Does your brother have a power too?”

Caleb nodded, trying to understand what it would be like to be able to change his appearance and shape. It was so different to have a power that people couldn’t see and especially to have a power that didn’t effect one’s self. Caleb supposed that most people’s powers had to do with creating or manipulating some force outside themselves. Catalia’s power was a force on its own and unique in its own right. “That would be daunting,” he said, as he thought about what it would be like if he couldn’t get something like his eye color to go back to normal. “You want to be able to take on identities but at the end of the day just be yourself.”

“Yeah. Like I know it doesn’t really matter what you look like? But it’s the kind of thing you can tell yourself a thousand times over but that doesn’t mean your brain actually believes it. It kind of matters to me.” It felt a little silly now she was saying it to someone else. She prided herself on throwing herself into things and being a lover of adventure and new things and being out her comfort zone. She could feel her eyes getting moist as well, which frustrated her to no end, which in turn only made it worse. “You just about summed it up. Be yourself is such a cheesy thing to say.” She tried to make it a cheeky snarky remark, but her body wasn’t responding to it in the right way; instead her face contorted into a snap.

Rose laughs, “Yeah, I’ve been there. And thanks, I think?” She says with a smile, “What’re you up to in here anywhere?”

“Oh right,” she said, “I just lost my favourite scarf and I’m traipsing round everywhere just checking for it. It’s cream with dark grey stripes. Awesomely large, pretty much picnic blanket material.”

10:45 AM Breakstone Lake

The good thing about Winter months was the odd amount of practice he’d get against the natural elements. Jax had already taught two classes for the young-uns that morning and right then, he stood by the lake side, holding the freezing pouring rain above his head and over the whole lake. Steps somewhere around, splashing water everywhere break his concentration but not enough for Jax to let go of the rainwater he’d been holding six feet above his head and above the lake. 

He turns around, hands still feeling the pressure of holding against nature. He moves one of his hands to dry a path towards whoever’s splashing around. “You’ll get a cold like that, splashing around in all this wet.” There’s a literal, physical strain on his arms as he holds the water. “Don’t slip.” Jax warns in that usual stern tone of his. 

Lina pranced down the path, completely disregarding his warning. She didn’t like warnings.

“You don’t need to worry about me. I’m very adaptable, you know. Not that I do the sea creatures much, although if I’m feeling charitable, I do the dolphin thing for anyone wanting to swim with dolphins. When I do dolphin, my face properly freezes up in that smile though.”

She tucked her hands behind her back, tilting her head back to look up at his rainwater. A sly smile spread over her face. “What happens if someone tickles you?”

Staying seven days inside his room eventually forced JD out of his room - he had locked everyone outside and ignored anyone’s claims to bring him out. But after a whole week (though technically two), he needed to at least do his laundry and clean the damn room. Right there and then he was sitting in the floor of the laundry room wearing only a black compression shirt and jeans, a lit cigarette between his fingers - and while the power inhibitor collar was terrible for his health and made him feel like shit, he needed to wash every single piece of clothing he owned. As someone walked around the corner he grimaced. “Don’t mind me.”

Lina was walking past when she spotted JD through the open door of the laundry room. She immediately dipped through the doorway, casually leaning against one of the machines, propping one hand on her hip. “Well, hello there hell hermit. It’s good to see you about. I don’t mind you at all. What’s with the-” she gestured to the collar.

“I was at many places were waltzing took place. Galas, charity dinners, receptions…It happened all the time. I would attend with my family.” Nari rolled her eyes. “Normal dancing. I could never understand normal dancing.” She couldn’t see how anyone found it fun. She didn’t much enjoy waltzing either. Dancing with other people always caused her to feel anxious. 

“Remind me how rich your parents are again?” Lina grinned. “Your life should be turned into a movie. We can give you an uninteresting love interest too. Or we can give you two! Just to make sure it sells, you know?” She tipped her feet up, stretching out like a cat, limbs looped over the arms of the chair. “It works a lot better usually with drink. Did you try it drunk?”

“I don’t like wine. And it wouldn’t be free. You can to be one of his followers with all the rituals and sacrifices.” He shrugged at her other words. His family wasn’t particularly religious, but as his eyes scanned to the book in his lap, his lips twitched into a small smile. “I’d follow the old philosophers any day. Plato, Descartes, Nietzsche. They were the superior men.”

“Wine isn’t my favourite either. I mostly like it for the sophistication than the actual taste. You can pretend to be all sorts of people with wine.” Lina wrinkled her nose up, putting on . “Man, I am so not up for rituals and sacrifices. I don’t like being told what to do. They’re so restrictive.” She loved some of the people here like Nari, who liked such different thing to her; people were such a stretch of the imagination, even for her. “I know Plato...kind of. What makes someone a superior man?”

She nods, “Just trying to get all the possible gym stink off of me. It feels gross.”

“Sometimes I’m too lazy to wash after working out, so I just sit and do other stuff until I feel less gross.”  Lina unashamedly admitted most things about herself, so long as it was something ridiculous and not real feelings. “You smell okay.”

Caleb listened, nodding a little. “Why? Is it just more difficult?” He asked, wondering. It was interesting to hear about powers that had physical manifestations. Caleb’s power was one people couldn’t see and it worked very differently from a lot of powers that people could see the effects of. “Sorry, I don’t mean to pry. It’s just interesting.”

“No, no, it’s easier actually, because humans are all built on the same structure, you know. But, it’s weirder.” It certainly appeared that he wasn’t reading her mind, since he gave no indication of understanding, asking her questions instead. She appreciated that, even if it wasn’t deliberate. Maybe she kind of wanted to talk about it - she wasn’t going to admit that properly to herself just yet though. She certainly wasn’t going utter the words that she was worried or scared. “I can’t remember the exact colour of my skin. What if I change it and then can’t change it back properly? What if I forget how tall I am and change that? I like trying new things all the time, and I like pretending to be other people, but I don’t want to actually change myself.”

Rose looks up from the sink after hearing a knock on the door. “Come on in, it’s open!”

Lina popped her head around the door and raised her eyebrows. “Are you brushing your teeth in the afternoon?”

Caleb felt bad for seemingly interrupting and surprising her. Catalina’s humor was empty and more sarcastic than anything else. He shot her back a small smile although it was just as meaningless as the one she was wearing. “Not too much, just can’t sleep. What about you? Something keeping you up?”

The thing was, she was a good liar. But if he could probably tell she was lying, what was the point? Maybe confessing what’s troubling you actually helps like people said. Maybe these were times to be different, or to be brave. “I was practising my human alterations. I usually always stick to animals, sometimes I do a bit of changing myself into different materials or objects you know. But actual human changing? Like, trying to make myself look like you, or Genevieve or George Washington or whoever. I haven’t done it in ages, I just keep putting it off.”

There was something to be said about Charlotte and cleanliness on a good day but on a bad day, with her mind cluttered and stuffed full of nonsense like gossip and the impending chaos by the Brotherhood, Charlotte’s need to overcompensate for the lack of organization in her own brain grew exponentially out of her own room and into other’s. Catalina’s was an unfortunate casualty.

“There we go,” Charlotte announced cheerfully to (mostly) herself as she neatly tidied up a series of miscellaneous items on Lina’s desk that she had meticulously ordered by colour. She puffed up her chest triumphantly. “Looks perfect, don’t you think?”

Lina sat on the bed. She hadn’t moved at all since Charlotte had come in and zipped about the room like a maniac, sorting through the ridiculous mess of her room. Her head leaned against the wall and she had one leg crossed over the other, waving her foot about in the air. Lina could look happy and crazy but she tended to reflect off people, automatically opposing their mood. Not to mention, when it came to tidying, her laziness kicked in bad.

As Charlotte announced the grand opening, she lifted her head a couple of inches and tilted her head this way and that. “Hmm...good work, maid. Sure is tidy. I will do my best to try and make it last the day.” After all, she hadn’t asked Charlotte to do this; it seemed to have almost been more to her benefit. “Would you like to take a seat down?”
