I guess the hatred (as someone that IS hating lol) comes mostly over the fact that:
1. We didn't expect it from him, the choking I mean, like, yes, I understand that obviously it wasn't the best thing to do and that MC (even if unintentionally) is at blame. But once again, MC doesn't know costumes of Hell, they know practically nothing about what goes and doesn't in hell because no one took the time to sit them down and explain it to them, rather simply letting them figure it out for themselves through trial and error.
Which honestly makes me believe that, in some way, the devils still see them as Solomon and not their own person. We know that the majority of devils still have a hard time not seeing Solomon but rather MC, and Solomon most likely knew all these things, so it wouldn't be weird that the devils brains simply go "Yeah, they must know too" and deter from explaining hell basics to them. It would explain why MC was gambling alone in the butler event and why they were cleaning Mammon's storage in this event.
2. The choking was unnecessary, just as you said.
I have commented in another post that Asmo isn't the first (and most likely not the last) character to hurt MC in one way or another. What happens is that, we as a fandom, tend to let go of those that have hurt MC dang easily.
Take Leviathan as an example, back in the day, we didn't really get a lot of people complaining or hating on him when he choked and almost killed MC. Why? Because that's how he was presented to us. As the toxic downright abusive LI of the game. Meanwhile, Asmo was presented as the extremely horny but loving LI that's doting and caring of MC.
Another example could very much be Beel. I remember that one of the things he says to MC the most is how much he wants to eat them. The fandom treats it as "awww thats so cute and hot" which, yeah, if it came from literally any other character, maybe, but it comes from the guy that's known for literal cannibalism. That ain't no cute lovey dovey thing, that's a threat disguised as a cute thing right there. But he was presented as the ADHD corny silly LI, so of course the fandom catalogues that as "Beel's silliness and that he would never because he seems so in love with MC" well, Asmo is your proof that he, in fact, would.
And like that with the other million characters out there.
My point is, I believe we are hating on Asmo due to how random and unexpected the choking was. The anger I'll say is expected and deserved, as, once again, I can understand the reasoning of it with hell being in danger by MCs fault (as accidental as it was). Could he have handled it better? Obviously, but it is what it is.
