Tabloid vs Broadsheet Task

The two papers I will. e comparing are The Daily Record and The Daily Telegraph both from the 24th October 2020.

What is the photographic style of the newspaper?

Daily Record

For the Record I think it is mainly a mix of everything, ranging from sports to interiors. I think this because this paper appeals to the general public more than a broadsheet is which is directed to more upper class and business people.

The Daily Telegraph

For the Telegraph, it is more documentary and studio based. This is because the paper is more high end and cover stories that are more documentary style.

How many images in the paper?

Daily Record

Roughly 287, cover to cover.

The Daily Telegraph

Roughly 157, cover to cover.

How many credited?

I couldn't find any photographers credited in either paper.

Comment on the layout of the paper. What proportion text, what proportion images?

Daily Record

In the record there are several images to go with the stories and the text is usually small in comparison, keeping it short. There is usually one large image and a few surrounding images to add to the story.

The Daily Telegraph

For the Telegraph, there is usually only one image to accompany the story and some stories don't even have any. The stories are very long and in-depth which make us focus more on the story rather than the images themselves.

Look for a similar story/ piece of news in each paper. Where is the article? Front page or inside? How has the article been reported? Who is the photographer?

I have chosen a story that covers the US Presidential debates as it is one of the only stories that are similar in nature.

The story is on page 15 of 59 in the Record and only covers half of the page. Whereas in the Telegraph it is on pages 18 and 19 of 41 and is a whole double spread.

The stories aren't completely the same the Record mainly outlines the topics that were discussed from both parties whereas the Telegraph talks more in-depth about Biden and his life.

The photographers have also not been credited in both papers.

Who owns the newspaper? Any Political stances?

Daily Record

The Daily Record is owned by a company called Reach PLC and is more of a left sided paper. Supporting Labor and the Unionists.

The Daily Telegraph

The Daily Telegraph is owned by a company called Press Holdings and is more of a Center-Right paper. Supporting the Conservatives and even siding with the leave campaign during the Brexit elections.

Lighting The Dark Research

Barry Underwood

As well as having a background in Photography, Underwood also has a BA in theatre. He talks of his project “Scenes” and how he came about the name for the project as he thinks of them as “Theatrical scenes” and remind him of scenes in a play, touching on this theatre background. The inspiration comes from “bioluminescent algae”. I was really drawn to this work as I really loved the landscape within the image and how he managed to add in the lights into it. Each image is bursting with colour whether it be from the lights or the landscape and I find that really beautiful. Each scene looks very tranquil and calm due to the water being smoothed out by the long exposures he uses. I really love how he pairs a beautiful landscape and makes it his own by adding these bright light instalments to them.

Something Told Research

When I first saw the presentation images, I instantly wanted to do a monochromatic still life but after some thought I decided to go down the route of traditional still life, taking most of my inspiration from the dutch masters still life paintings. I didn't want to overcrowd my frame and thought a lot about my subject and the story I wanted to tell with it.

I wanted to go down the religious route with my story and after looking at the presentation slides about symbolism in paintings, I knew that bread symbolised the body of christ. As I wanted a more quiet still life, I only decided to have bread and wine, wine symbolising the blood of christ. Most of the paintings I looked at had light coming from only one direction and very dark, black backgrounds. which will be something I will include in my own still life.

Beauty In The Banal Research

For this brief I was struggling a little with coming up with an idea and in my 121 I was told to take something boring and turn it into something interesting. So I had a little walk around my neighbourhood and something that popped up a lot was bus stops and bus shelters. I walk past them everyday and to be honest, they are quite boring. I also decided to shoot these a night as night photography has always been something I have been interested in and try.

Richard Hooker

One photographer I found was Richard Hooker, who has a whole project called “By the Bus Stop” in which has goes all around London and photographs the bus stops whether they are full or empty. I was first drawn to his images because of the bright colours and how he has composed his images. I later found out that this series was shot on film through out 2001 to 2005.

Although I won't be photographing during the day or when they have people waiting at them, one thing I will take away is how he has composed them. Standing across the street from the shelter itself to have it all fit in the frame, having both the shelter and post in the frame too.

Luca Orsi

Another photographer I found was Luca Orsi who created a project called “Atmospheres” which aims to “represent the empty urban scenes in a nocturnal mood.” I was really attracted to the work because of the colours yet again and how Orsi captures such beautiful light in dark places. The work also gives off quite a spooky vibe as most of the places are devoid of people which makes it give off that vibe.

These were the only images of bus stops within the project but I love how the shelters are light by one single light overhead and how everything else around it is almost in darkness. Orsi also seems to take the approach that Hooker does too which is standing across the street to photograph to fit everything in the frame. The colours are bright and vivid too, catching our eye and drawing us into the images.

Two Magnum Photographers

Alec Soth

Soth’s work is documentary style. He became a nominee for Magnum in 2004 and became a member in 2008. He mainly documents Americans in suburban areas and makes sure his images are full of colour. He says most of his best work comes after failure. Every project he has done is because of an internal need and has come out of a place that he has been at that particular point in his like. “Sleeping by the Mississippi.” came from a desire to break free and “Niagara” came from wanting to explore love and long term relationships. All of Soth’s projects are personal to him and hr very successfully tells a story through each project whether it be love or breaking free. Soth also came to photography from a fine art perspective and this can be seen from the simplicity of the work. He also shoots 8x10 and really takes his time in composing and taking his images. There is no path to being an artist... chart your own path. Deal with patience.

Jérôme Sessini

Sessini is a very well known war photographer and has been sent to war zones in Syria and Palestine. As well as this, he has also documented drug violence in Mexico and protests in Ukraine. I try to make people aware about stories and conflicts. A lot of Sessini’s work is showcasing harsh realities of living in dangerous places and war zones. He started off photographing protests in Paris before “Gamma” sent him to Albania to shoot the Kosovo war. ...and I have my own political opinions. But I try to keep this away from photography. I don't try to give explanations with my work because photography cannot tell everything...I want to make people to form their ideas for themselves. I feel Sessini’s work is successful due to the rawness and honesty in his images. He doesn't try to make things look better or worse, he simply wants us to see the truth of the world we live in. He puts his life in danger to show us these truths.

Say What You See

The Flower Seller - Pablo Picasso 1901

In this painting I see a busy town with people selling various things. In the foreground I see a woman selling flowers with an old couple sitting to the right. In the background I see a horse and cart which can indicate the time period.

The painting has very few bright colours with blue being the main colour used for this. The painting itself is in quite a child like way with the paint being applied quite thick and with visible brushstrokes.

The painting doesn't give much away in terms of of the people. We can however, see that it is a gathering of young and old with the colours that have been used for the clothing. Light dressed for the young and dark cloaks for the old.

Shoot One

I decided to reshoot the last image again but this time differently. I chose a new flower, one that reached the bottom of the vase and I also tried to use the whole bunch. I wanted my images to look a little more elegant and nicer aesthetically so I decided to go with the one flower instead. For this shoot I used pink tulips.

Personal Project

For my personal project I have chosen to shoot a series of still life images consisting of flowers. I did a few test shots before having a one to one with Iain about my project. Which can be seen below. I was taking much of my inspiration from Irving Penn and Robert Mapplethorpe.

At first I wasn't gripped with the project and nothing was really working for me until I saw the light in the corner of my room which is seen in the last image. I quickly did a few shots with this as I only had a limited time frame to capture this. At my one to one I showed these to Iain and he really liked the idea of keeping everything nice and simple and I was to continue doing image like this. My main idea is to capture the flowers in bloom and when the wilt too to capture a sense of time and decay. Since then I have photographed more flowers and the contact sheets will follow after this post for each shoot. I will also do rough edits for each shoot then pick my favourite and edit it further.

Artisan Evaluation

Personally I found artisan one of the tougher briefs this block as I, myself, am not really interested in video or becoming a videographer. However I took the brief on and think I did okay. I contacted a friend who is a seamstress and asked if she would be up for me filming her while she makes something. She was over the moon and accepted. it did take a while for our schedules to meet up where we were both free and I could come to hers to film. The filming process itself wasnt too bad and a got more than enough clips to piece together a sequence. I would personally do a lot more planning and thought into the subject as I wasnt 100% sure what actually went into the making of a garment. As for editing, I found this relatively easy as I was able to understand there basics of video editing and adjusting the clips exposures and so on. Overall, I feel my video is okay but it does feel a little rushed as I mentioned before, our schedules didn't meet up but apart from that I enjoyed the challenge.

Final Canvas and Evaluation

This is my final canvas for Catch Me if you Can. I found this brief quite exciting as event photograph is something I am quite interested in. Due to the very low light I had to use a 400 ISO but upon reviewing my images, they were quite grainy and needed heavy editing. One thing I would change is actually checking both my laptop and hard drive to make sure I have a copy of ALL of my images before formatting my card as for this brief I had accidentally done this without making a copy but I had salvaged the “good” images I had from Lightroom so I wasnt left without any images. I was good to be in this environment and to see what it would be like if I did go down the route of event photographer.
