Turn Off All The Lights; Let The Morning Come
He was tired. More so than he would have ever liked to admit. But there was a fire alight within his chest as he stared down at her face. The soft curves of her skin, the red tint of her full lips. She knew exactly what she was doing. “I am,” he said almost without his own permission. “For months I laid dormant, simply waiting for something to happen. At one point, I am more than certain I would have been content with death.” Here he was, yet again, confessing things he hadn’t intended to. Her deep eyes drew it out of him and the god was reduced to something akin to putty in her hands. “After you left, I was locked away and abandoned. It was no more than I deserved but I grew to resent those who claimed they cared regardless.”
Natasha fell into that category. He wondered if she realized it as he spoke. She probably did. “Then one day, I freed myself and still…” he laughed, his tone bitter “No one came to capture me and toss me back into my cage. In fact, they hardly raised a brow.”
He silenced himself for but a moment to gauge her expression. She was strong, steadfast, unwavering. Loki borrowed some of her courage. “I have forever struggled with the notion that beings I consider to be beneath me scoff at my very existence. And I have long desired to silence my detractors. Permanently.” Natasha probably didn’t know it but this was the beginning of a confession.
And once more, she simply watched him. Allowing the words to leave him without interruption. And even when he looked to her, almost as though he was searching for a reply or emotion, she simply continued to watch. She knew what it was like, to never be able to genuinely get everything out when you wanted or needed to. How it was to hold everything in and even when you needed to let it go most, you couldn't. She understood what he had gone through, so she didn't try to interrupt him. There were times for words and this was not one of them. Instead, she continued to caress his cheek gently with her thumb, patiently waiting for when he would be done speaking.
She understood what he meant when he said resentment and she knew that she probably should have pulled away, but she didn't blame him. She couldn't fault him for feeling that way when she had been the one to up and leave him without so much as a word. But that was who she was and at the time, she had convinced herself that he meant nothing and that she owed him nothing more than the kindness she had shown him once upon a time. But even she knew how hard it was to believe that lie.
Loki's expression darkened visibly when he made his last comment and Natasha had half a mind to question him and ask what it was that he had done or was planning. However, instead her lips twitched slightly and she nodded her head toward his bedroom door. "Seems like you're doing a lot more talking than you're used to. Let's get you to bed, hm?" She turned and started walking towards the room, however, she patiently waited for him to continue speaking once more.
Let's take a shot for the moms.
[Pulls her hand up to his lips and kisses her knuckles] And I thank thee, Natasha. [Lets go of her hand and slowly starts to back away, then turns his back, setting is helm atop of his head] Fare thee well, may the Fates be in thy favor fore’er from here.
...And may Valhalla welcome you home.
Let's take a shot for the moms.
Yes, and that we did. And so much more. Thou art extraordinary, and it has been an honor to have e’en known thee. Loved thee, and call the friend. [Loosens his arms around her and his lips tighten] I only ask thee to continue this legacy.
I'll miss you and I've loved every moment I've been able to spend with you. [She holds onto his hand and looks down] Thank you, Thor.
Turn Off All The Lights; Let The Morning Come
For months, they had been apart. And he missed her, he wondered but eventually moved on. His life had never revolved around her, he told himself. Despite the fact that there had been nights when she was all that he could think about and despite how she had served as both a source of great hope and terrible pain. Here she sat before him, the object of his desires and so many feelings he had never properly processed. He would hurt her like he’d hurt Sigyn. It was always the ones that he held close that suffered the most from his actions.
Loki recognized the deception in her voice immediately. This was a game they played but it wasn’t fun like it used to be. At least not now. His eyes moved from the floor to her person. Time had not changed her but he swore she looked more beautiful than last they met. A part of him hated her for it.
“All that we have been through and still, you insist on treating me like a stranger you’ve passed by on the street. You can see past my defenses. Why assume that I cannot do the same?” There was no anger in his voice. But there was something bubbling beneath the surface. Maybe he was angry. Surely with himself more than her.
Natasha smiled slightly, but it lacked emotion. Standing from the couch, she walked over to him, studying his features closely. It seemed like only yesterday they had been in these same spots, watching each other as closely as they were now. And she had missed him, at certain moments. But she was a woman that had learned to move on from things that were not meant to play a part in her life. She had made her peace with that and had moved on. Yet, when she had returned and when she saw him, it was almost as if she had never left and they were right back where they were when they started. But that wasn't true, that couldn't have been further from the truth, because when they started, she felt nothing but resentment for him.
She had caught the hidden tone in his voice, it was something that she had not been able to place. If it had been anger, she wouldn't have blamed him for it. Perhaps she had wished it had been something else, something that even she was not able to admit. "Sometimes it's easier to pretend things are different than what they are, then you can convince yourself that it does not exist. Such is the same with emotions. Which... Is the reason I do treat you like a stranger at times. And I do not assume that you cannot do the same, I know very well that you could. I would just rather not admit such things to myself."
Not waiting to hear a response from him, she lifted her hand and held it to his cheek, tilting her head to the side. "You look tired... You should get some rest." She pursed her lips slightly and absentmindedly ran her thumb over his cheek.
Let's take a shot for the moms.
[Squeezes her slightly, resting his head on top of hers and speaks quietly] We all must go sometime, but thou hast changed my life, ne’er forget that. I am glad that we are what we are, shared what we had and lived.
What matters is that we lived and loved, correct? [She holds onto him tighter, willing the tears not to come]
Let's take a shot for the moms.
[Stares at her quietly, then leans forward to pull her into a hug] I thank thee for being one I could always rely on. For e’erything.
[She wraps her arms around him and holds him tightly, still afraid that opening her mouth would end with tears being shed]
Let's take a shot for the moms.
Thou doth not need me, Natasha. Thou hast always been a woman of thy own self worth and strength. I merely… came to this realm one day and… [Chokes a moment] I wish it was not so either… But I must go with honor…
[She blinks a few times and nods, trying to hold back the tears she knows will fall if she speaks.]
Turn Off All The Lights; Let The Morning Come
Natasha sat on the couch, merely watching him as he stood before her. Loki had always been the complicated type, or so she had been told. It had never been hard for her to read him or understand his intent or words. Perhaps it was the likeness in their personalities or the similarities in their stories. But he was never what people made him out to be, even during the moments when she should have saw him as nothing other than a monster, Natasha refused to. And even now, when she could tell that something was wrong with him, she didn't shun him or get irritated and leave. Instead she continued to watch him silently, waiting until he had finished speaking. And when he had, she leaned forward and pushed aside her own emotions about the day and her own trivial feelings and sighed slightly.
"I treat you no better or worse than I wish to be treated. I give everyone the same courtesy that I wish to have until I have been given a reason not to. You, however, have proven yourself different than many of the enemies I have known. Therefore, I continue to treat you with the same respect that you show me." Natasha was lying to an extent and she was sure that he'd pick up on it. It was a very rare moment that she went completely out of her way to speak to someone or care for their emotions, but that's what she did with Loki. And she knew that it was something more than just a mutual respect. But for now, and for as long as he would allow her to, she tried to convince herself that it was nothing more than that.
Let's take a shot for the moms.
Natasha, do not do this to thyself. I know what fate has in store, as doth thee. ‘Tis inevitable, and it has been know by thee for some time. I only wished that this day would have come after all I had cared for has come to pass…
Well, it hasn't, has it, Thor? No, it's come and people are still here. People that need you. I ne- I just wish you didn't have to go.
Trust me, that is not necessary. Not from you.
You say things like that as if I am truly any different than anyone you've encountered before. I'm not.
Let's take a shot for the moms.
Aye. Thou must. [Looks away and taps the handle of his beer] I would not have thee waste thy life away.
What life, Thor? I've lived long enough for three women and I was not meant to last this long. If I wish to spend my time waiting for you then I will.
Let's take a shot for the moms.
I do not know. Battle may rage on for days… months… years… I would not wait for me t’e moment we part from this night.
So you expect me to just accept your death and move on?
I should be better at this given the title. You, however, have always made it difficult.
I feel as though you'd want an apology.
Let's take a shot for the moms.
I am most sorry, Natasha… Fenrir hath been released. I feel the realms shake… I should e’en be here, but I— I wished to give thee a final farewell. A proper one.
When will you... How will I know when...
I am… perfectly fine. [Nods] Things could not be better.
Are you lying horribly on purpose?
