Pentathalon Music
For the music portion of my pentathalon I attended my music major friend Dana’s senior violin recital. She played 5 pieces and it was especially impressive because she memorized some of them and they were incredibly long and intricate. Some were accompanied by the piano, but some were only violin. I never knew how many things you could do with a single instrument.
Pentathalon film
I was told that it counts for a film pentathalon event if I go see any movie in general, and I’m not sure if that is true or not AND I do not have a photo to prove it but I figured I would write this post anyways just in case. Over spring break I went to see the new Beauty and the Beast movie with Merissa, Julia, and Alexia. I think that it was a very interesting adaptation because it portrayed Belle with a lot more agency as a character and it offered a lot of backstory that was not included in the original Disney film. It even added some historical context to the plot. The costumes were definitely my favorite part of the movie. I think this film was definitely worth seeing, if for no other reason, because of how interesting it was to compare to the original.
For a second dance pentathalon credit I saw another one of Merissa’s performances. This one was the UMoves show and Merissa was in a performance which explored different types and aspects of love. I really enjoyed the music and costume choices especially in this piece. It was also cool to see Merissa in a very upbeat happy dance which is not like what I have usually see her in.
For the art portion of pentathalon I visited the National Portrait Gallery in DC. I have been here several times before but I had actually never been up to the top floor, and it is now by far my favorite part of the museum. I think the pieces I included in the photos were particularly interesting because they open a discussion of what qualifies as portraiture. I was especially draw to the colors of the first piece. The sculpture was one of a group of similar sculptures, and I thought the decision to hang them on a red was was extremely interesting. Another color wall, like dark blue for example, would have entirely changed the context of the piece. I also included that snapchat as proof that I was there (that is me on the right).
For my dance pentathalon event I attended the Shared Graduate Dance Concert. This performance showcased the works of 5 grad students, and my roommate (and fellow art scholar), Merissa Collins, participated in two of the pieces. The piece shown in this photo involved Merissa walking across the stage in a sparkly outfit, but dragging an enormous train of trash behind her. This was part of a discussion of appearance versus reality. This specific piece also covered many other societal issues such as extreme consumerism and environmental destruction.

NAME: Natasha Szymkiewicz ADVISOR: Kenna MEETING DATE & TIME: February 10, 2017, 2:40pm In 3-4 sentences, please describe what was discussed during your meeting: In my meeting, I discussed with Kenna the possibility of rearranging the time frames of my project so that instead of experimenting with leaving my pieces outdoors on a daily basis, I could observe some of them hourly. This would make it easier to make sure that my work does get disturbed by other people. It would also make it more convenient for me so I would have more time and would be more easily able to work with several different pieces. We also discussed a few artists who I should research and an exhibit in DC which I could visit in preparation of my work. In 3-4 sentences, please explain what the next steps you will take with your project will be. The next step which I will take for my project is to complete a preliminary experiment in the locations which I am considering for the project I want to make sure that the pieces are still there the next day, and I want to see the levels of destruction of several pieces I do not intend to use for the project so that I can have an idea of what materials should be left outside for daily observation, and which for hourly. I also need to continue to make more art pieces intended for this project. Please use the space below to indicate any further questions, concerns, or confusions that were NOT addressed during the meeting. My main concern is in figuring out which outdoor locations to use for my experiments. I need to find places which are close enough to where I live (still in Bel Air hall) that I can easily check up on them, but places which will not be disturbed by other people. I need to find secluded area that are also exposed enough that the elements will be able to alter the pieces.
Pentathalon (visual art)
Being a studio art major, you would think that this is the portion of pentathalon that would have been most easily accomplished for me. Unfortunately, however, I did not attend any art shows this year. The only thing that I have been to are the small shows that we do for the art classes I am taking, which are removed in a day or so to make room for new artwork. Since I have nothing else, here is a picture of an installation I did for my sculpture class. I learned a lot from that class and I found it very valuable to art scholars in that other work from it actually inspired my capstone project. I hope you will consider giving me some credit for this because I really need it :)
Pentathalon (music)
For my music pentathalon event I attended a show by the Gamer Symphony Orchestra. My friend Alexia Owusu-Sakyi (also in CPSA) is in the GSO. Although I am not a gaming person and did not really recognize any of the music, I appreciated how well the group worked together and how excited they seemed to be to play their show. They were very impressive musically.

Pentathalon (theatre)
For the theatre portion of my pentathalon I attended a show at Catholic University which one of my friends was in. I did not take pictures at the event because I was not allowed to, but this is a picture of my ticket. This show, Bloody Poetry, was about 4 famous writers and their lives. Each of these writes lives a relatively depressing life, and my friend was the saddest of all because her only scene was of her dying.
Pentathalon (music/literature)
For the music portion of my pentathalon I attended an open mic night with some different bands made up mostly of UMD students. One of my friends, Nate Self (who is an ETE scholar) performed in the show. The music was very interesting, because many of the songs were written by the performers. I think this was a memorable experience because it was fun to see my friends play in a show specifically. At this event there was also poetry read and even a little bit of stand-up comedy. The poetry was very interesting because it covered a lot of very personal topics.
Pentathalon (dance)
For one of my pentathalon events I attended a dance show which my roommate, Merissa Collins (who is also in CPSA) was in at the Kennedy Center in DC. This show was called Skirt the Wall and it examined different cultural issues through dance. One particularly memorable part was when the dancers walked out into the audience and eventually went outside, dancing in front of windows so the viewers could still see. I thought this was very creative In the picture above you can see some of the dancers walking through the audience.
Pentathalon (Music)
I also do not have a picture for my final pentathalon event, which is music, so I am not sure if this will count for a grade, but I thought I would try anyways... Earlier in the semester I attended an open mic night at the co-op. This event was extremely fun, and I saw so many amazing musicians and writers. I especially enjoyed watching my friend Nate Self (who is an ETE scholar) perform a song on the guitar. It was also fun to see one of my fellow art scholars, Charlie Youngmann, and his band Across From Parkside perform some original music and covers.
Pentathalon (Dance)
For my dance pentathlon credit I attended my friend/roommate Merissa Collin’s dance show for the CSA. The dance featured the Wizard of Oz, but transformed the story to reflect the Caribbean culture. My favorite part of the event was the costumes. Merissa participated in two segments of the show, one in which she wore all black, but sported a bandana with the flag of Granada, which is where she is from. In the other she wore a traditional carnival costume. The music was fun and lively and the dancers looked like they were having an amazing time. I know that I do not have a picture for this event, I was not thinking ahead to pentathalon when I was watching the show. So I do not know if it will count for my grade, but I thought it would be worth a try... :)
For my art portion of the pentathlon I visited the Hirshorn Gallery in DC. I really love this museum because so much of the art is extremely different from anything I have ever seen. I especially liked the room on the lower level in which the entire space was the work of art. The walls and floors were covered in red and black text and the installation was titled “Belief and Doubt” as the most prominent portion of the text read “Belief + Doubt = Sanity”. I also liked the blue light piece which is pictured above because of its similar ability to capture the entire room.
For my literature pentathalon event I attended the art scholars coffee house. I really enjoyed this event and I loved that it gave me the opportunity to see performances by so many people I know and learn with in the scholars program. My favorite part of this event was when my friend Emmie Habtemariam read a poem she had written during the open mic portion of the event. She had never read her poetry to an audience before, but because she felt so comfortable in this environment with the support of her scholars classmates, she was able to face her fears and she performed amazingly.
For another art pentathalon event, I had my ARTT100 work shown in the Herman Meril gallery in the art/soc building for the UMD foundations showcase. I took ARTT100 (which is a basic design class) last semester, but the work was exhibited after break. It was a very fun experience to have my work hung in the show, and it was rewarding to see my efforts in the class paid off.
For my film pentathalon event, I attended the showing of Wall-e in the CCC last week. I think this movie was very appropriate to the scholars theme of trash this year, because it displays the impact of wastefulness and carelessness with our trash in a very creative and memorable way. Even though several things are probably slightly exaggerated or unrealistic in the movie, it effectively gets its message across to the viewer. Wall-e is almost scary to watch in that the idea that humans could destroy their planet to the point where it cannot support life seems very plausible, and based on what is shown in the movie we are moving in that direction. I also wanted to see this movie because I really enjoy it, and I think the story is adorable.
