You were finishing up packing your little backpack when your social worker appeared at your door. “Good morning y/n, it’s a big day today! Are you ready?” She exclaimed. You nodded slowly, pulling on the zipper of your bag. April was confused at your lack of emotions during what she deemed to be an exiting time. You were getting fostered by a wonderful couple, yet you hadn’t even smiled. Deep down in your stomach, you could sense a slither of excitement, you liked Scarlett and Colin seemed okay too. You were leaving the group home again, but it was just another order. Another decision being made for you. You were used to doing what you were told, it’s what earns you privileges after all. Your social worker guided you down the stairs and you sat patiently on a small chair by the front door. “Scarlett and Colin are just signing a few documents then you can head home with them” April smiled.
You were watching your feet closely, watching how one would appear and the other would go into hiding as you swung your legs slowly. “Hi y/n” a familiar voice called. You looked up quickly, spotting the couple from last week. “It’s nice to see you again” Scarlett smiled nervously. “I don’t know if you remember us but I’m Colin and this is my wife Scarlett, we’re gonna look after you if that’s ok? You’re gonna come and live with us” the man grinned at you. You nodded slowly as you shuffled down off your chair, collecting your backpack on the way. “Is this all of your things?” Scarlett asked, saddened by the view of your rugged backpack. You looked up at her with hooded eyes. “You’ve got all of your clothes and toys?” She questioned. “The kids don’t have their own toys, they all share what he have here” April spoke up. Your backpack was small, and clearly all it was holding was clothes and maybe a few personal items. The blonde frowned, every child should their own toys and games, something to call their own.
“Well if you’re all set y/n, why don’t we get going?” Colin said, reaching for Scarlett’s hand. You took slow steps towards them. “Wait uh, where’s her painting? The one she was working on last week, with the daisy?” Scarlett asked your social worker. Your breath got caught in your throat, she remembered your painting, the painting you worked on together. “Oh, we had to discard it, one of the other kids…damaged it” April said shyly, as if the child’s action hadn’t be an accident. Your lips fell into a frown as you were reminded of what had happened to your painting. Scarlett didn’t miss the way your bottom lip started to wobble. “Ok” she sighed “you ready to go y/n?” She asked you. You didn’t react, still looking down at your sneakers, they were too small for you, they hurt your toes. You were a few steps behind the pair as you followed them out to the car. It was a big black SUV, the back windows were completely blacked out.
“We bought a car seat for you sweetie, do you need help getting in?” Colin asked as he opened the back door for you. Your eyebrows twinged with confusion, people didn’t usually help you. You shook your head as you walked towards the car, swinging your backpack off your shoulder. “Want me to take your bag?” The older man asked as he reached for your rucksack. The pair didn’t miss the way you flinched subtly before pulling the bag into your chest. It was yours and no one was going to take it from you, again. Your eyes filled with fear, you had been rude and you were going to get in trouble. Scarlett softly pulled Colin away, she motioned her head towards the drivers seat and that’s where he headed. “Hey, why don’t you climb up into your seat and then you can put your bag next to you?” The blonde asked as she crouched down to your level.
You didn’t meet her eyes, you couldn’t. You pushed yourself up into the car with your backpack tight in your grasp. It was clearly a struggle for you and Scarlett was itching to help you, but she remained still. “The seatbelt is here” she said as she pointed to the leather strap, allowing you to reach for it yourself. You tried to clasp it, but it was too fiddly. You looked back at the blonde, disappointed in yourself. Scarlett leaned in slowly, connecting your seatbelt “it’s okay” she whispered. The angle was awkward as she tried to keep as far from you as possible. “Does that feel good? Not too tight?” She questioned. You could feel her breath lightly falling across your face. Your lips parted, but your voice was still stuck. You tired to force a smile though only one corner of your mouth folded up. “Let’s get you home yeah” Scarlett smiled.
The drive back felt long, the once tall buildings towering over you had turned into green trees and long stretches of grass. You looked out of the window the whole time, mind not completely lost but also not quite present. Scarlett and Colin didn’t say much, they just enjoyed a peaceful journey, accompanied by the songs on the radio. The pair glanced back you every so often, sharing quite smiles between themselves. Soon enough you pulled up to a big security gate, for the first time in 45 minuets you glanced forward through the windscreen. The metal slowly swung open and the car slowly rolled up a small hill. Your eyes widened as you saw the house. It was big. Not big but huge. There were defiantly 3 stories and the driveway was big enough for an entire play park. “So y/n this is our house” Colin mentioned as he caught you staring.
The pair wandered up slowly to the front door, you watched the way their fingers danced around each other, hands swinging back and forth. Scarlett noticed you looking, she let go of Colin’s hand slowly, you didn’t look jealous but Scarlett’s heart did crack at your sad wandering eyes. “Would you like to see your bedroom first? I can show you or you can head up by yourself?” The blonde asked. You nodded, though Scarlett wasn’t entirely sure if you wanted her to show you or not. You looked down at her hand, noticing a tattoo for the first time. The older woman followed your glance and she made a quick decision. She held out her hand slowly, bending down slightly so it didn’t seem like she was demanding. You lifted up your own hand slowly, placing your skin against Scarlett’s. You swear you felt your heart skip a beat.
You began climbing the stairs with the blonde, you should’ve been watching your feet but instead your gaze was solely focused on Scarlett’s hand. Her skin was soft and you liked the way her entire palm enveloped your fingers. This was the first time you had connected physically and Scarlett didn’t ever want to let go, she could feel your little bones, the way they twitched as if you were still unsure about the contact. Scarlett swung her hand slowly, barely an inch but you felt it. You looked up at her and she increased her motions. You giggled. It was quiet, barely audible but the blonde heard it. You hadn’t made a sound before, the vibration of your joy shot straight into her heart. Though she decided not to make a big deal about it. You passed a few doors once you had climbed the stairs “this is the bathroom” Scarlett pointed out “and this is where Colin and I sleep, so in the night if you ever need us you can knock on the door or just come straight in” she offered. You were allowed out of your room after lights out? “And don’t be afraid to wake us up okay, Colin’s a heavy sleeper though so you might have to shake the bed” Scarlett chuckled joyfully.
“And this is your room, just next to ours” the blonde said, opting to use her free hand to open the door. She let you step in first, and you paused when she didn’t move with you. “Is it okay if I come in too?” She asked. You nodded, face scrunched into a slight confusion. It was her house, why did she need your permission to enter the room? Scarlett switched the light on, it wasn’t late but it was almost dark outside, fall slowly setting in. Your eyes danced around the room instantly, the colour was blinding, it was beautiful. Matching Oakwood furniture was scattered across the room, picture frames on the wall carrying stars and little rainbows. The bed was made with a soft pink duvet, the pillows were so plump. You noticed a basket in the corner and skeptically went to investigate, hand still intertwined with Scarlett’s. The basket was full of small teddy bears and toys, some still in boxes. “These are your toys y/n, you can have them all to yourself” the blonde smiled “and I think you might like what’s in this drawer here”
Scarlett pulled open the bottom drawer on your dresser, it was full of art and craft supplies. Your face was a beacon of surprise, you grinned loudly, though this time remembering to cover your teeth. “Do you like it?” Scarlett asked cheerfully. You nodded enthusiastically. You had a small rummage through the clutter, mind racing at the possibilities of what you could create. “Now do you wanna pop your backpack on the bed and have something to eat?” The blonde said. You waddled back over to the bed, having to let go of Scarlett’s hand to take the bag off your back. The blonde missed your touch but you didn’t reach for her again, although your fingers wiggled as if they were searching. Scarlett opened her hand again and this time you didn’t hesitate to slot your palm into hers.
The two of you made your way back downstairs “do you like your room y/n?” Colin questioned as you came down the last few steps, you nodded politely. “I’m glad, if you want to change anything you just have to ask ok? We can always repaint or get you some little trinkets” he said. You followed the pair into the kitchen, another humongous room. “Scarlett and I thought we could have a little treat for dinner and order some Chinese food, would you like to look at the menu and pick something?” Colin asked as he grabbed an old crumpled paper from a wooden notice board. You had never eaten Chinese food before but as it was what the couple had chosen you decided you would try it. You were passed the menu and looked over it fearfully, there was lots to read and you couldn’t make out most of the words. You looked up at Scarlett and she was quick to kneel down beside you, her body lightly sliding against your own. You had never been so close to someone before.
“There’s lots to choose from isn’t there” the blonde smiled, disconnecting her hand from yours to steady herself on the floor. You missed her already. “What about some rice and some fries, nothing too complicated. Or what about some stir fry? Like noodles with some vegetables?” Scarlett asked. You nodded, agreeing to what the woman had chosen for you. “Ok, I’ll get it ordered, it might be a little while so you can go explore the house a bit or Scarlett could show you the front room if you wanna watch some tv?” Colin asked, already dialling on his phone. You felt your heart rate pick up slightly, there were so many questions. You were used to being told where to go, where to sit how to act all these options felt foreign to you. You reached for Scarlett’s hand as she stood up, not wanting her to leave but too afraid to ask her to stay. You decided you’d let her choose where you were going to go while you waited for dinner.
Scarlett took you into the living room, she figured you’d have plenty of time to unpack your small array of things later. “Do you wanna watch some tv while we wait for dinner? Or we could bring some toys down for you to play with?” The blonde offered. You pointed slowly towards the tv, it seemed like less hassle. “Ok I’ll put something on for you, you can sit wherever you’d like” she smiled as she motioned to the three couches in the room. There was only one in the group home, you didn’t quite understand why only two people would need so much space. You were starting to guess that Scarlett and Colin had money, a lot of money. You wondered what they did for work, they hadn’t mentioned that yet. You climbed up into the corner of one of the sofas while the older woman found an old child friendly movie on Netflix “is this one ok?” She asked you. You nodded quickly.
Scarlett noticed how you pushed yourself tight against the arm of the couch, as if you were trying not to take up too much space. Her heart ached at the sight, who had made you so afraid of every room you entered? You didn’t quite lean back against the furniture, arms not even resting on the cushions. “It’s ok babe you can get comfy, dinner won’t be for a little while yet” Scarlett smiled, hoping it would help you feel able to settle. You only gazed at her as she spoke. You glanced briefly at the clock on the wall, it had just gone 5:15pm, your chores were supposed to start at 5pm, you were scared to breathe too hard. Afraid that Scarlett would realise you weren’t doing what you were supposed too. The blonde noticed your wandering eyes. “Do you need something sweetie?” She asked as she sat close by on the couch.
You pulled at the sleeves of your sweatshirt, you didn’t like doing your chores but you also wanted to make Scarlett happy. You looked around for something to communicate with until you saw the vacuum leaning against the white wall. You timidly pointed over to it. The blonde leaned over to see where your gaze had drifted, then she remembered what your social worker had mentioned. “You don’t have to do any chores here y/n, you can just be a kid ok” she smiled. You nodded, although you were confused. If there were no chores and no instructions, how were you supposed to earn her affection? You turned your focus back to the movie on the tv and so did Scarlett.
You craved the connection of her hand again, you were hooked on how her skin made you feel. You were two far away to simply reach over, one of you would have to move but you were too scared to ask. You opted for making a grabby hand at Scarlett, it was small and your fingers barely moved but the blonde still noticed. She reached out for you, moving the cushions out of your way. You hesitated slightly. “You can come over” Scarlett smiled, attempting to pull you out into the space she wanted you to be comfortable in. You pushed yourself onto your knees and slowly shuffled over. You liked your little corner, it was safe but you wondered how it would feel to sit next to Scarlett. You settled beside her, not too far but close enough to comfortably intertwine your hands. You smiled at the connection, it was slowly becoming your favourite thing.
It was a little while later when Colin announced that dinner had arrived. You followed Scarlett into the dining room and watched while the pair began serving up the food. You stood up on your tip toes to get a look, it didn’t seem all that appetising to you but it was what was for dinner so if you didn’t eat it you would go hungry and maybe Scarlett and Colin would send you back. “Here you go sweetie” Colin smiled as he placed your meal in front of you, it was a generous portion, you were afraid you wouldn’t be able to finish it. Scarlett noticed your gaze “just eat what you can okay babe” she said. The two of them had planned this, not to frighten you but in the hopes of improving your weight. Your body was tiny, and that didn’t matter to them, but your health did. It was hard to figure out if you were just naturally skinny or if you weren’t getting enough food. Scarlett and Colin hoped this meal would help them understand.
You decided to start with the fries, they were safe you knew you liked them. And maybe if you ate enough you wouldn’t be in trouble. You finished them quickly, not too fast but not too slow, while the couple conversed in random topics. You were still hungry but all that was left on your plate were the noodles, hidden under a thick layer of vegetables. You decided you would at least try. Colin noticed your hesitation, nudging Scarlett subtly under the table. Maybe you just had a small appetite, the blonde had thought to herself. You twisted your fork into the noodles, placing a small helping on your tongue, you absolute did not like it. You tired to like it you really did but each mouthful made you feel sick. You decided you’d had enough and you’d face whatever repercussions followed. “Are you all done y/n?” Scarlett asked you. You nodded timidly, keeping your head down.
Scarlett and Colin locked eyes for a moment. “It’s okay darling. If you’re all full and don’t want anymore that’s perfectly fine” Scarlett smiled. You couldn’t tell if they were trying to trick you, luring you into a false sense of security before they would eventually snap, calling you an ungrateful waste of space, at least that’s how it started with your previous foster parents. But when you looked up at the blonde, she was simply smiling. You were good at reading people and she seemed to embrace nothing but calmness, maybe they wouldn’t be angry with you. “Are you sure you’re all full up?” Colin asked, gently trying to coax you to get a little more in your tummy. You nodded in response, hoping the pair didn’t hear the rumble of your stomach. They noticed, of course they did. Your stomach was calling out for food. “ok” Colin smiled, not wanting to press on the issue.
It fell silent for a few minuets, while the couple continued their meal. You watched closely, not understanding why you couldn’t just grow up and eat the meal in front of you. Scarlett was finishing up her food when your stomach growled again, louder than ever. You locked eyes with the blonde instantly. She looked concerned, you were causing problems. Your eyes filled with tears and you fought hard to hold them back. Scarlett noticed and she instantly set her cutlery down and cautiously came over to you, crouching down on the floor next to you. “Hey, hey, it’s ok sweetheart” she cooed “are you still hungry?” She asked. You simply looked at her, and the blonde could read your entire conversation through your eyes. “Do you not like the food?” She asked quietly. You shook your head, a stray tear betraying you. “Oh babe that’s ok, it’s alright” Scarlett softly spoke, reaching for your hand, she had started to understand that it was comforting for you.
Colin was still lost as to how his wife was able to understand your unspoken words. “We can get you something else okay, it’s not a problem” Scarlett smiled, running her fingertips along your palm. “Did you like the fries?” She asked, giving you more time to communicate your answer, however you decided too. You nodded shyly. “Do you like all kinds of fries?” Scarlett asked, making an effort to ask more direct questions so that nothing got lost in translation. You nodded again. “Okay, we have some fries in the freezer. I can make you some of them. Would you like that?” She questioned calmly, letting you know that it wasn’t a bother for her. You shook your head yes, sniffling in short small hiccups. “Alright sweetheart I’m gonna go start the air fryer okay” Scarlett smiled, cautiously moving her hand to wipe away your tears. You leaned back slightly, not knowing what she was doing. The blonde smiled softly, silently telling you it was safe. Her thumb moved smoothly over your cheek and you subconsciously moved back towards her touch. There were no words needed.
Scarlett made her way back into kitchen, switching on the air fryer as she grabbed some fries from the freezer. Colin cleared the dinner table, he told you you could wait in the living room but you stayed at the table, you hadn’t finished your meal yet so surely you weren’t allowed to leave the table. The brunette followed his wife into the kitchen, the pairs absence made you nervous. “Babe?” Colin questioned when he saw his wife leaning against the counter, head in her hands. On cue, the timer on the appliance alerted the blonde that it was ready to start cooking. Scarlett’s movements were rough, she shut the air fryer with more force than necessary. “Woah woah, hey” Colin hummed, taking hold of Scarlett’s hands. He knew that his wife had a short fuse at the best of times, though he wasn’t quite sure what she was so angry about, he also didn’t want to startle you with the noise. “Take a breath baby, what’s wrong?” Colin asked. “We need to be more specific with our questions when we talk to y/n” Scarlett said, voice certain of her words.
Colin looked down into her eyes, he understood now what or who she was angry at “it’s not your fault okay, this is difficult and we’re new to this” he said. “We need to do better,” Scarlett sighed “I don’t know what happened to her but she was so afraid to even tell us that she was hungry and even more to tell us that she didn’t like the food” she said as she moved around the kitchen. “I don’t think she even wanted what we suggested from the beginning and we only understood silence as yes” Scarlett said desperately, getting frustrated at herself. “She did nod her head” Colin muttered, attempting to soothe his wife. “I don’t think she felt that she couldn’t” the blonde whimpered “I mean think about it, think about that group home. The schedule, the rules, the chores. Everything is an instruction. We have to show her that she’s allowed to have choices here. God Colin earlier in the living room, she pointed to the vacuum, as if she was expecting us to ask her to clean our house” Scarlett cried.
Colin crossed the room, wrapping his arms around his wife and holding her close “it’s okay. We’ll get there okay we’re learning” he said. “We need to learn quicker” Scarlett huffed. “Ok. We will. Scouts honour” Colin said firmly, saluting to the blonde. Scarlett giggled at her husband’s actions, he always knew how to get her smiling again. “So no more Chinese takeout for a while huh?” Colin asked with a grin. “No. We’re gonna figure out what y/n likes and that’s what we’ll eat, all three of us. I don’t want her to feel separated” Scarlett said. “So we’re gonna be eating fries for the rest of time?” Colin asked with a sarcastic raised eyebrow. “If that’s what it takes” the blonde chucked. The two shared a kiss before Colin left to finish clearing up his dishes, he quickly glanced into the dining room, checking on you. His heart shattered as he watched you fiddling with the loose thread on your sleeve, he wished he could understand you the way Scarlett does but he hoped that one day, maybe he would.

It’s been one year since the death of your mother. You’re surprised when you find your dad and Scarlett getting started on their wedding plans
Word Count: 1.8k
Warnings/Content: Grief, sad reader
———————————————————————
1 year. 12 months. 365 days. You woke slowly from your slumber, the day you had been dreading had arrived. You wished you could press fast forward and just skip past this awful day. A year ago today your mom lost her battle and passed away in her sleep. You had been snoozing next to her, after she told you that you needed to rest. When you woke up, her bed was empty. She was gone. You pulled yourself out of bed, making an effort not to look at the picture frame on your bedside table. You had been avoiding every possible trigger for the last few days. You couldn’t cry, you didn’t want to upset your dad. You trudged through to the bathroom deciding a warm shower might soothe the ache in your heart. You stayed under the raining heat for a while, until your stomach decided it was ready for breakfast. Pulling on some random clothes, you walked slowly downstairs, the aroma of coffee hitting your nostrils.
Scarlett’s giggles were the first sound you heard, it was something you were starting to enjoy. “Hey pickle” Colin said as you appeared in the kitchen. “Morning” you hummed, a forced smile on your lips. “There’s fresh coffee if you want some babe” Scarlett grinned, cheeks rosy as if your dad had said something corny just before you entered the room. You nodded in thanks and grabbed a mug from the cupboard, ignoring the old chipped mug that belonged to your mom. “Dad, I was wondering if maybe we could do something today? Maybe go for a walk or something?” You asked, hoping you could distract yourself and your father for the day. “Sorry hun I gotta stay home today, Scarlett and I are in full planning mode” Colin said, wrapping his arm around the blonde. “Yeah and we could use your input, mainly for cake selections” Scarlett smiled. “Your wedding planning? Today?” You questioned, eyes falling to your dad. “Yeah” he sighed. He hadn’t forgotten, he couldn’t have. “What’s today?” Scarlett asked, looking between her fiancé and you. “Well it’s the perfect day to plan a wedding” you sarcastically smirked “on the anniversary of your wife’s death” you snarled, snatching your coffee and leaving the room.
“Col” Scarlett sighed sadly. “I know, I’ll got after her in a minute, just let her cool off first” your dad frowned. “No I- that’s not what I meant” the blonde said, pushing her laptop closed “why didn’t you remind me?” She said. “I’m sorry I just, I wanted a distraction” Colin replied. “I get that but… I don’t think this is the right kind of distraction you know?” Scarlett mentioned, motioning to her computer. “We need to start planning” the brunette said, standing to pour himself another coffee. “Our wedding can wait your mental wellbeing can’t. Are you okay?” Scarlett asked, rising to place a comforting hand on Colin’s shoulder. “No” he whispered, tears filling his eyes. “Oh baby” the blonde cooed, pulling her fiancé into her arms. Colin rarely cried and it wasn’t often that he showcased the more uncomfortable emotions, he said it came from being a comedian.
Upstairs, you climbed back into bed and pulled the duvet up above your eyes, blocking out the world. Your dad didn’t seem to care anymore, he was too busy planning his future with his new wife he didn’t even have time to talk about the old one. A soft knock at the door gained your attention, it was Scarlett, she always knocked 3 times. You reluctantly let her in, you weren’t really sure if you wanted to see her right now, but you knew that you didn’t want to be alone. “Hi babe” the blonde whispered as she entered your room. You pushed up off your elbows, sitting up in your mountain of duvets. “I- I’m sorry sweetheart” Scarlett whispered as she settled on the end on your bed. “Your dad, he didn’t forget, I need you to know that” she said. You kept your eyes down, afraid that if you looked at her you’d only be able to cry. “It was my idea to do wedding planning today, Colin only agreed because he wanted a distraction” Scarlett murmured.
You huffed under your breath, who wanted to be distracted from the person who used to be their entire world. Scarlett lent forward slowly, gently lifting your chin up “your dad told me, that today was a year since…” she said “I forgot. I should’ve remembered and I didn’t and I’m sorry” she mumbled, nose scratchy from the need to release her own tears. “It’s not your trauma to remember” you whispered, voice shaky. “No it’s not. But it’s yours, so therefore I intend to carry it too” Scarlett said. You looked into her deep green eyes, noticing a ring of blue around her iris. You didn’t understand, why would she want to take on your struggles? “Hey, hey” the blonde cooed, swiping her thumb under your eyes, catching the tears you hadn’t meant to let fall. “I miss her so much” you sobbed, leaning forward into Scarlett’s awaiting arms. “I know baby, I know” the older woman hummed, cradling your neck and drawing patterns on your scalp.
You whimpered into Scarlett’s shirt “I thought dad would be different, after that night at mom’s grave” you said. “I thought he’d wanna talk about her again, like he did at first. But he just went back to being emotionless” you hiccuped. Scarlett pulled you tighter to her chest “that’s just his way y/n, it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t care though” she hummed. “I know, and I get it, I just thought that today would be different” you sniffled. “I just didn’t expect to see you guys planning your future today” you pulled yourself out of Scarlett’s embrace, although it was warm and you wanted to stay there. “It’s your future too babe, if you wanna be part of it. It’s you, me, your dad and your mom” the blonde smiled, smoothing down the hair she had tangled atop your head. “The 4 of us” she said.
“The 4 of us?” You parroted, a questioning glimmer in your gaze. “The 4 of us” a third voice spoke. You and Scarlett whipped your heads towards the door. “Dad?” you sniffled. Colin moved quietly across your bedroom “come here chicken” he said, wrapping his arms tightly around you. “I’m sorry honey, I’m so sorry” he muttered. “It’s okay” you murmured. “No, no it’s not y/n. All I could think about today was distracting myself, I just couldn’t face feeling it all today” your dad said as he rocked you with small sways. “I lost my wife an entire year ago, but you lost your mom. I don’t always think of it that way and I’m sorry” he cried. “I forgive you” you sniffled. “You shouldn’t have to keep forging me sweetheart, I should be better” Colin sighed, sitting back and wiping his damp eyes. “You’re my dad. I’ll always forgive you, it’s your first time living too” you softly smiled, passing your dad a spare tissue from your bedside table.
“Did you really mean what you said?” You asked, turning to Scarlett “about it being my future too? The 4 of us?” You said, feeling like a broken record. “Yeah, I did” the blonde grinned “but if you don’t want too-“ she began. “No” you interrupted “I- I think I do. My mom’s never coming back, I know that. The family that we had is gone, but I quite like the new one we’ve started” you mumbled, twisting your ring around your finger. Scarlett could feel the tears behind her eyes. Finally, for the first time, you wanted this. You wanted her. You looked between Scarlett and your dad, despite their obviously sad demeanour, they looked happy. Happy together and happy to be with you, even through the darkest of times. “Can I be a bridesmaid?” You suddenly asked, causing the couple’s eyes to glaze over you. “In the wedding?” You questioned.
“I think I have a better idea” Scarlett smiled. You furrowed your brows as your eyes wandered her intentions. “How does maid of honour sound?” She asked. You could feel the air vacate your lungs, why would she want you to take such a special role in her wedding. “Me?” You whispered “isn’t there someone else you would want to be that?” You questioned. Scarlett shook her head “no” she said securely. “I want you to be my maid of honour. I want you to help us plan the wedding and I want you to pick the cake with us and make the playlist for the reception” she rambled. “I want you to be involved in everything y/n, the bachelorette party the wedding and everything after. I want you in my life because I love you like you’re mine, and I know that you’re not and it’s okay if you’re not ready to hear that yet but I just need to tell you that because I feel it so deeply in my bones”.
You put an end to Scarlett’s waffling as you threw yourself into her arms. You held on tightly, and you didn’t think you could ever let go. Colin sat close by, a silent comfort for both you, his heart swelling with love and happiness. “I’ll be your maid of honour!” You exclaimed. The blonde leaned back, taking your face into her hands “really?” She asked. “I’d love to be” you smiled. Scarlett used her thumb to wipe away your stray tears “you think your mom would be okay with it?” She questioned. “I think so” you said. “I know so” your dad suddenly spoke up. You and Scarlett shared a surprised giggle, you’d all sit forgotten your dad was here, but you couldn’t be more grateful that he was. “Sounds like you’ve got some work to do, you know being maid of honour means you’re in charge of the bachelorette party right?” Colin asked, wrapping his arm around your shoulder. “Does that involve drinking?” You asked with a sly grin. “Absolutely not” your dad said.
“We can get back to planning later” Scarlett chuckled “why don’t we make some fresh coffee and some pancakes for now? We could have a relaxed morning, talk about your mom a bit?” She asked. “That sounds good” you smiled, leaning back over into Scarlett’s embrace. You opened your arms and invited Colin into the cuddle. You allowed yourself to collapse into the comfort of the room, rain slowly pattering down the window frame and the warmth of your new found family. You could feel your mom in the air, you knew she was close by today. And no matter where you went, she would always be there.

Summary: Scarlett and Colin are ready to dive into family life. After deciding they want to adopt they head to a local group home.
Word Count: 3.3k
Warnings/Content: Foster system / Mentions of past foster parents / mentions towards child neglect / Hint of bullying / Touch of Selective mutism
———————————————————————
Scarlett and Colin had been married for 2 years now and recently the idea of starting a family had surfaced. After lots of talks and late nights thinking the two had decided they wanted to adopt. The couple were perfectly capable of having their own baby but the thought of being able to share their love with a child who was yet to receive any filled their hearts with joy. It was a long few months, but finally after all the checks and assessments had been completed Scarlett and Colin were on their way to a local foster home. There had been the opportunity to find a child through files and photographs or at a recent adoption fair but it didn’t feel right. The couple wanted to meet the children in their day to day life, rather than a list of stats or a bustling fair where personalities could be perfectly crafted.
“Well this was not what I was expecting” Colin sighed as he pulled up outside of the most common of American homes. “I thought it’d be bigger” Scarlett said as she eyed the brick laced house, old brown vines still tied to the gutter, their corpses begging to be freed. “Let’s go mama bear” Colin smirked as he helped his wife out of the car. “I’m not a mom yet” the blonde said as she grabbed her purse. “Then let’s go change that” Colin grinned, latching his hand to Scarlett’s as his free palm opened the rusted gates. The two gasped as the metal came to a crashing close. Scarlett felt uneasy. It was as if those gates were more than just bars. They were an enclosure.
“Hi! You must be Mr and Mrs Jost!” A bright lady smiled as she came down the front path. The blonde smiled at hearing her husbands name, not the usual Johansson she had come to expect. “It’s nice to meet you, and please just Colin is fine, this is Scarlett” the SNL host said as he and his wife shook hands with the woman. “I’m April, we’re just setting the kids up in the day room, it’s their free time but because of the rain last night none of them are up for coming outside” April rambled as she guided the couple up into the house. “Free time?” Scarlett questioned. “Yeah, we try to keep the kids on a schedule to support their development, there’s reading time, study time and scheduled chores. The older ones help with dinner sometimes and the younger ones usually just tidy up around the house.” April said.
Scarlett and Colin shared a knowing look, things seemed a little too rigid for them. The noise was almost overwhelming as the three stepped into the main room, there had to be at least 10 kids cramed into a standard sized living room. Colin smiled gently, it looked like there was plenty to do. A few older kids were huddled up in a corner flipping through magazines, two tiny children were drawing with an older woman, who Colin assumed must be another social worker. “Hi! Who are you?” A young blue eyed girl beamed as she ran up to Scarlett. “This is Scarlett and Colin, they’ve come for a visit” April smiled. “I’m Mabel, Are you gonna foster one of us?” Little Mable asked. “Maybe” Colin kindly answered. “Well if you are, I’m pretty cool, you should pick me” the little girl giggled as she slipped away back to her toy cars. “She’s sweet?” Colin shrugged towards Scarlett “yeah” the blonde nodded somewhat absent from the conversation, her eyes focused on something else.
“Mable is wonderful, she’s 9 and she comes with a younger sister Isla who’s 5, if you’re interested in siblings” April grinned. Colin and the social worker continued in small talk as Scarlett wandered slowly further into the room. Her eyes not leaving one specific spot. A small girl, a blonde, sat by herself at what Scarlett assumed to be a crafting table. She noticed how the girl was deep in her art, though her eyes darted up at every kid who walked by. The corners of her mouth would rise as if she was about to ask them to join her, though each time the passing child left, accompanied by a friend. “Who’s that?” Scarlett asked, beckoning over Colin and April with the back of her head. “That’s y/n, she’s been with us for a few years, she’s 6. She was recently placed back here after a foster arrangement fell through” April sighed. Scarlett couldn’t help but grimace at the annoyance in the social workers voice, it was if this child was a bother to talk about.
“What happened?” Colin asked, joining his wife in watching the young girl, their gazes going unnoticed by the little artist. “A couple came in about a year ago said they couldn’t conceive on their own so they were looking into adoption. Y/n was with them for 8 months then they found out they were expecting and sent her back to us” April said, helping to fix a broken doll from a young boy who had run up to her in tears. “That’s awful” Scarlett whispered, interlocking her fingers with Colin’s. The blonde watched on as the young girl continued to paint on her own, Scarlett noticed how the little blonde shrunk into herself, as if she was too afraid to take up space. “What happened to her parents?” Colin asked, turning back to April. “Mom took off when she was born. Dad left the house one day and never came back, she was only 4” the social worker said as she walked over to the couple. “What was he like before he left her?” Scarlett asked, still not turning to face the woman she was conversing with.
“We don’t know” April frowned. “You didn’t ask her?” Colin questioned. The blonde was listening hard, actively getting more frustrated with this woman, sure she had many kids in her care but Scarlett believed that each child was as important as the next, yet to April, this small girl didn’t seem all that interesting. “Look we tried, we’re understaffed in a house of 15 kids the one on ones are rare, besides it wouldn’t matter anyway. Y/n doesn’t talk” the lady said, picking up a few discarded playing cards from the floor. “Not at all?” Scarlett asked, paying close attention to the way the little girl was searching for a paintbrush, her eyes scanning the room silently asking for someone to help her. “She says a few words maybe once a week” April huffed. Colin looked back at her, a small unpleased look on his face. Before he could look away, his wife’s hand slipped from his grasp as she made her way across the room.
“Hey there, I’m Scarlett” the woman spoke softly. You looked up at her sharply, taking a small step back from the stranger. “Are you looking for your paint brush?” The blonde asked, noticing the item in the corner of her eyes “here it is” she said as she held out the object to the young child. You reached out slowly, wrapping your fingers around the handle and bringing the brush back towards yourself. “What do you say y/n?” April spoke up as she arrived behind the blonde. Your eyes grew in size as you looked between the two women. “It’s ok, you’re welcome y/n” Scarlett said, looking towards April then back at you. You noticed another person watching you, a man, stood close by. The blonde could see the way your mind was thinking, as if you were trying to decide what to do next. “Can I see what you’ve been painting?” Scarlett asked, pulling up a small chair close to yours. You stepped back slightly, silently inviting the woman to take a peak at your canvas. Scarlett smiled at you, though your eyes didn’t manage to reach hers when you looked back.
Before she got a chance to look, two little boys came rushing over, twins. “Hi!” One of the boys cheered. “Hi there, oh you two have got to be twins!” Scarlett smiled, turning away from you. “Uh hu” the other boy nodded. “I’m a twin too I have a twin brother” the woman said, suddenly distracted. You moved back towards the crafting table, a frown evident on your face. Colin noticed the way your eyebrows twinged with a slight confusion, as though you were worried. Colin tried to imagine what you were thinking, were you worried that Scarlett would be more interested in the two boys, after all she had mentioned that she was a twin and so were the boys, they were already connected. “Y/n your picture is very beautiful” Colin spoke up, loud enough for Scarlett to hear. You looked over at him, lips twitching as if they were attempting to smile. The blonde whipped her gaze back to you, your little face breaking her heart. She hadn’t meant to ignore you, she was just trying to be polite.
“Can I see?” Scarlett asked again, though this time you didn’t move. You kept your head down, eyes slightly peaking up to see the blonde. “Why are you talking to y/n?” One of the young twins suddenly asked “she doesn’t talk back, she’s weird” he said as he reached over the table and took one of your paints. “Alfie” April warned. “Maybe y/n just doesn’t wanna talk right now, but I’m sure she has lots to say and I bet her voice is very pretty” Scarlett said, smiling back at you towards the end of her sentence. Your eyes were glassy, as if you wanted to cry but you wouldn’t allow yourself too. “Boys why don’t we go and find your trucks?” The social worker asked the boys as she took hold of both of their hands. Colin nodded as she guided the boys away, no one noticing that Alfie still had your paint.
Scarlett looked at you sadly, she could see the way the young boys words had cut you. “It’s ok y/n, I don’t think you’re weird” she smiled. You sniffled quietly, instantly afraid the couple would notice and be angry with you. Scarlett lent over slowly, careful not to invade your space as she took a peak at your art. “Wow, Colin’s right it’s very beautiful” she said while opening her hand for her husband to come closer. “Colin is my husband by the way, can we paint with you y/n?” The blonde asked you. You looked over your painting, it was unfinished and you could use the help. You shook your head slowly, the first time you had directly interacted with the pair. “No, why not?” Colin questioned as he pulled up a second chair, not wanting you to feel like the two adults were towering over you. It was almost laughable to see two grown bodies sitting on such tiny chairs, but Colin and Scarlett didn’t mind.
You pointed to your painting, you needed the yellow to finish your daisy. Scarlett followed your finger to splash of colour on the canvas “do you need the yellow?” She asked. Colin was amazed that his wife was able to understand what you were trying to say. You nodded, your movements still slow and small. The pair began looking for the yellow paint when Scarlett noticed you glancing across the room. She looked over her shoulder to see the twin boys splashing the yellow paint on a newspaper. How had the social worker not realised you were using it. Scarlett tapped Colin lightly, causing him to follow her eyes. The two shared a silent conversation, Colin thought about going over to retrieve your paint the pair didn’t want to make a scene and make you uncomfortable.
“It’s ok sweetheart, look.” Scarlett smiled as she grabbed two new paint pots and a small tray. “If you take the green paint and the red paint” she said as she placed two little drops of colour on the tray. Her manicured hands took an unused brush and used the end to begin mixing the colours. You watched closely, taking small steps towards her to gain a better view. “You get yellow!” The blonde beamed as she finished creating your desired colour. Your cheeks moved before you could think, a wide smile falling across your face. You were amazed, it was like magic. Colin saw the small flicker of light behind your eyes before you suddenly realised your crooked teeth were on show. Your hands balled into fists as you covered your mouth, smile fading slightly. “Now you can finish your painting” Scarlett grinned as she pushed the small tray of paint towards you. You accepted it gratefully while skeptically reaching for a spare paintbrush and passing it to the blonde lady. “You need some help to finish?” She asked you. You nodded again, a little more confidently than before.
Colin sat close by, offering words of support as you and Scarlett worked on your painting. The woman didn’t hover over you, she knelt down near by always laughing and asking you each time if it was okay before she placed the brush on your artwork. You felt yourself having fun, enjoying playing with someone new, even if it wasn’t another child. After a little while, your social worker returned. “Free time is almost up, would you like to meet any of the other kids?” April asked the married couple, only flashing you a small smile. Colin didn’t miss the way your eyes dropped to the floor at the idea of him and Scarlett going to talk to a different child. You weren’t envious, Colin could see that. It was if you thought they might like another kid more than you and end up leaving you in their memory. “No I think we’re okay thank you. Though we should be heading off” Colin said.
You watched closely as Scarlett stood back on her feet, you didn’t want her to leave yet. “Ok” April smiled “y/n can you start clearing up your things please?” She asked you. You moved to twist your canvas towards her, wanting to show your social worker what you and Scarlett had done, but April was already addressing the other kids, asking them the same question. The blonde watched your smile fall flat as she grabbed her purse, this woman couldn’t even offer you a few seconds of praise. “Your painting is beautiful y/n” she told you, though you weren’t sure. “It was really nice to meet you” Colin grinned, his voice light. You stepped behind your art once again, seemingly retreating back into your small atmosphere. Scarlett hated it, she hated that you were so obviously outcasted here. “Bye bye y/n” she said, her smile not quite reaching her eyes, matching your own. You only looked up at her as she connected her hand to Colin’s. You wondered what that felt like, to have someone else’s hand rest so gently against your own.
April escorted the pair out towards her office, Scarlett didn’t dare look back, she didn’t want to remember your timid frame and she was scared that you would be looking back at her, asking her to stay with a frown. “Thank you both so much for coming to visit, though I understand if you didn’t find the child you were looking for” April said. “Well I think that’s something we need to discus” Scarlett mumbled, looking at her husband. She knew Colin liked you, maybe not as much as her but she knew that he did. “No I don’t think we do” Colin suddenly said, voice slightly louder than he had intended. He looked over at his wife, her blonde hair falling perfectly around her neck. “We want y/n” he confidently said, squeezing Scarlett’s hand. “Really?” April questioned “that’s amazing, wow. I can make a call and get the paperwork started this afternoon” the social worker smiled.
Though the couple couldn’t tell if April’s excitement was because you had found a family or because she was glad to get rid of you, they didn’t care. Because their excitement couldn’t be matched. “Yes please, when can we come back for her?” Scarlett asked. “It might take a few days to get everything set in place so possibly next week? Does that work for you?” April asked, already pulling out files, supposedly your own. “Yeah that works for us” Colin smiled. “Great, I’ll be in touch” the younger woman said, shaking hands with the couple. Scarlett and Colin felt like they were walking on air as they made their way back to the car. They couldn’t stop smiling the entire journey home. “Oh my god we’re really doing it” Colin sighed, mixed with nerves and excitement. “Yeah we are” Scarlett said, leaning over to kiss her husband on the cheek. The pair spent the rest of the day shopping, they bought some furniture for your bedroom, a few clothes and toys and an array of art supplies.
It was late when Colin finally came to join Scarlett in bed, he instantly noticed how her demeanour had changed. Her eyes were sunken in, a little damp. “Babe what’s wrong?” Colin asked as he climbed under the duvet, shuffling up right next to the blonde. “I can’t stop thinking about y/n” she muttered. “And that makes you sad?” Her husband asked, a little confused at the sudden change in emotions. “She’s in so much pain, I could see it in her eyes” Scarlett sniffled “and she’s so small, not just skinny, but small, frail” Colin pulled his wife closer, brushing back a few of her loose hairs. “You think they’re not feeding her?” He asked. “No, I’m sure they are but, I don’t know maybe it’s not enough for her. Or maybe she thinks she doesn’t deserve it” Scarlett frowned, the idea in her head shattering her heart. “Did you see her face when we first went over? As if she already expected that we wouldn’t stay, like she didn’t think she deserved our attention” she said.
Colin left a soft kiss on Scarlett’s forehead, lingering a moment to savour the intimacy. “She’s all alone Col” the blonde muttered. “She won’t be anymore” Colin said, pulling his wife flush to his chest. “Are we ready for this? And is y/n gonna like us? I mean we didn’t even ask her if she wants to live with us. It’s selfish, we were selfish but I saw her sitting there, playing on her own and I just knew I couldn’t leave her there, I didn’t even ask you about it. I’m so selfish” Scarlett rambled, breaths picking up in pace. “Hey, hey, look at me” Colin said, finding her gaze “you are not selfish. I’m with you on this, I want her too. And I am sure that y/n likes you already. It might be hard at first and it might take a while for y/n to trust us but I’m sure that she will” he cooed, fingers gently running across Scarlett’s face. “What if she never opens up to us? Never talks to us? She was too afraid to ask for a paint. What if she gets sick or hurt and can’t tell us. I mean we don’t even know what she’s been through. How can we help her heal if we don’t know what’s bothering her” the blonde frowned.
“You’ll know” Colin said, urgency apparent in his voice “we might not be perfect, but we’re not leaving her behind, too many people have abandoned her already” he smiled sadly. “Ok. We can do this” Scarlett sighed, letting out the breath she didn’t realise she was holding. “Yes we can. Now get some sleep okay, we’ve got a lot of furniture to put together tomorrow” Colin chuckled, laying himself down and pulling his wife along with him. “Yeah you have” Scarlett muttered, settling into Colin’s chest and smiling at her own witty remark. Colin hummed in amusement, reaching over to turn off the bedside lamp. Plunging himself and the blonde into darkness.

You’d been tossing and turning for hours, you were starting to get frustrated. Your mom had tucked you in just the same as every night, a story a snuggle a glass of warm milk and then lights out. Natasha’s comfort sent you into a peaceful slumber each starry night, though tonight you had woken just a few hours after falling asleep. Sometimes it happened, you were only 5, and occasionally you needed an extra nap during the day. You had tried to settle on your own but so far nothing had worked, so you decided to seek out your favorite person. You slipped out of your bed quietly, making sure to grab your stuffed elephant.
You patted down the hallway slowly, you didn’t need a stream of light to find your mom’s bedroom but she still left the lamp on every single night, just in case. Your little tongue slipped out in concentration as you pulled down on the door handle to Natasha’s bedroom. It was dark, but the red hair falling freely atop the pillow told you that you were heading in the right direction. “Mommy” you whispered, tiptoeing over to the bed. “Mommy” you muttered again, lighting tapping her back. Natasha was awake instantly, her instincts always told her to fight, but she lived a different life now, a tap on the shoulder in the middle of the night simply meant her little girl had appeared.
The widow sat up awkwardly, eyes flickering over her shoulder. “Hey baby girl what’s up?” She asked. “Mama I no sleep” you pouted, pulling your best puppy eyes in the hopes of winning a cuddle. “Oh did you have a nasty dream?” Your mom questioned, voice quieter than usual. “No mama” you shook your head. Before Natasha could think you began climbing up into her bed. Your mom grabbed the sheets instantly, pulling them up harshly on the side of the bed you weren’t trying to claim. “Ow! Nat what are you doing?” A surprise voice spoke up. You paused in your moments, looking at your mom. How did she speak without moving her mouth?
A disheveled fire of auburn hair escaped from under the covers. “Wanda!” You cheered. Natasha sucked her lips inwards, covering her red cheeks with her hands. “Wanda?” You murmured, suddenly confused by the situation. “H-hi sweetheart” the witch stuttered. The two were pressed tightly together, Wanda’s back was facing your mom’s chest. “Why are you in mommy’s bed?” You asked. “We- we were having a sleepover” Natasha muttered, subtlety trying to keep Wanda’s bare chest covered with the bedsheets. “Oh” you sighed.
You couldn’t help but feel betrayed by your mom, she knew how much you adored Wanda. “Why wasn’t I invited?” You frowned. Natasha ran her fingers through your hair, opening her mouth before Wanda cut her off. “We’re having an adult sleepover” the witch said. Your mama looked back over shoulder, scowling sarcastically at the younger woman. “What’s an adult sleepover?” You innocently asked. “Ugh…um” Natasha stuttered “we do adult things” Wanda said slowly, raising her eyebrows at the widow, trying to get her onboard with the conversation.
Wanda was trying to distract you, but she ended up doing the opposite. What the witch failed to realise was just how inquisitive you could be. “What kind of adult things?” You asked. Your mom snapped her head back to you, lips pierced together in an uncomfortable grip “just um…things for grownups baby” she said. “Is that why Wanda doesn’t have a shirt on?” You questioned, pointing to the witch. You were unaware of the truth of the situation. You’d caught your mom in bed with her girlfriend, her secret girlfriend. You were just too little to put it all together.
Natasha’s words were caught in her throat, she was usually calm and composed, able to face any situation with practiced ease. “Wanda was just hot sweetheart” she said, the words tumbling out of her mouth all at once. “Yeah I was” the witch winked at your mom. Your brows furrowed at the look they shared, you were confused. Natasha lightly smacked Wanda on the arm, making her giggle. “Why don’t you go grab your stuffy and your blankie and come sleep with us baby?” Your mommy said to you. “I can join your sleepover?” You asked excitedly. “Of course” Natasha smiled, kissing your forehead and helping you off the bed to retrieve your items.
Once you were out of sight, the widow snapped her head towards Wanda. “What is wrong with you?” She hushed under her breath. The witch could only laugh, highly amused at the situation and her girlfriend’s embarrassment. “I’m sorry I couldn’t resist” she smirked. “Just, put your shirt back on” Natasha said, throwing Wanda’s AC/DC top towards her with care. The two shared a quick glance, both trying not to laugh as they heard your little feet running back down the hall. Natasha would tell you the truth soon, but for now, she was happy to cuddle with her two favorite people.
