Statement from SEC Commissioner on Oklahoma, Texas

"The Southeastern Conference learned today of the decision by the Big 12 Conference to alter the membership exit date for the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas. We are continuing our preparation for this membership transition, and we look forward to welcoming the Conference's new members and moving into our future as a 16-team league.

The Presidents and Chancellors of the SEC previously voted with unanimous approval to accept the application of Oklahoma and Texas to join the Conference on July 1, 2025 and have now authorized the Conference Office to proceed with facilitating the transition of Oklahoma and Texas to become full members of the Southeastern Conference on July 1, 2024."

big changes to the big 12 and SEC starting in 2024

In 2024 the sec will get two new teams with the addition of the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners but here are some things that we need to understand at the outset.

1 : Oklahoma and Texas have agreed in principle to pay the Big 12 a total of $100 million to join the SEC in 2024, a year earlier than they had originally intended, the conference announced last night.

2 : The agreement is subject to the final approval from the Oklahoma and Texas governing boards. While the price tag, a fee that the league is describing as foregone distributable revenues, seems like a hefty amount to pay for the early exit, both schools are expected to be able to partially offset the cost with future revenues.

to that end here's a statement, From Brett Yormack (big ten commissioner) :"As I have consistently stated, the conference would only agree to an early withdrawal if it was in our best interest for Oklahoma and Texas to depart prior to June 30, 2025,(contd)"By reaching this agreement, we are now able to accelerate our new beginning as a 12-team league and move forward in earnest with our initiatives and future planning. I appreciate the approaches of OU President Joe Harroz and UT President Jay Hartzell to ensure an amicable conclusion to this process, and look forward to the bright days ahead for the Big 12 Conference."

Now what will happen to the big12? well on On July 1, the Big 12 will officially add BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati and Houston and it will compete as a 14-team league for the upcoming season. Sources told ESPN recently that both parties were interested in finding a way for the schools to leave early, but when the athletic directors and presidents met last week in Dallas, there was no resolution. It was a quick change that even surprised some leadership within the league on yesterday afternoon. But there are some scheduling changes that will come in effect allow me to explain.

A key part of the deal to let the two schools out early was a game flip of a nonconference matchup between Michigan and Texas, sources told ESPN. Texas will now visit Michigan in 2024 in Ann Arbor and Michigan will return the game in Austin in 2027, according to sources. That game had been scheduled to play out the opposite way. The flip was a key driver in Fox agreeing to the deal, per sources.

Likewise with ESPN, holds the entire rights to the SEC starting in 2024, which is the same season USC and UCLA are heading to the Big Ten and the College Football Playoff is expanding to 12 teams

To Round things out here's a statement from Texas tech president & Big 12 Conference Board of Directors Chairman Lawrence Schovanec. "This agreement would not have occurred without the collaboration of the presidents and chancellors of all 10 Big 12 universities, and our tremendous partners at ESPN and FOX. I am very grateful for everyone's efforts to make today's announcement possible."

Meanwhile,

Texas president Jay Hartzell said the Longhorns are looking forward to completing a final 2023-24 season with "our friends and rivals."

"We have always been committed to fulfilling our contractual obligations to the Big 12," Hartzell said in a prepared statement. "The collegiate athletics landscape has continued to evolve rapidly, and working together to accelerate our exit produced benefits for all parties."

Oklahoma president Joseph Harroz Jr. said the decision allows everyone "to move ahead with clarity and certainty."

"With the new era of collegiate athletics fully upon us, an opportunity emerged for all parties involved to explore the value of an early departure," he said. "These terms further guarantee the sustainability, stability, competitiveness and excellence of us all. The exciting matchups and passionate rivalries of the past quarter century will always be a celebrated part of our shared history. We look forward to showcasing that intensity this season, next season and beyond

Mike Leach … A name that will echo through the halls of college football history. He was an eclectic & eccentric & and intelligent man. Even though I never met Coach Leach in my life, he left an indelible mark in most college football fans, including me, and if there was a Mt. Rushmore of CFB coaches it would be Saban Bryant and Stallings. Coach Leach brought personality to the sport. But the Story of Mike Leach can’t be told without learning about the innovations on the offensive side of the ball with the air raid offense, and for this I’ll turn it over to Joel Klatt relating this story.

Expanded playoffs are coming to college football and here's what you need to know! by Nathanael Thomason

On Dec 1, 2022 the college football playoff management committee expanded the playoffs from 4 to 12 teams for the 2024 and how does that effect the the cfp future? allow me to explain on how we got to this point

THE ROSE BOWL AND THE CFP

In order to expand from 4 to 12 before 2026 everyone had to unanimously agree to it. the rose bowl was last to join the party. he discussion centered around one of the most lucrative television windows in college sports. The Rose Bowl wanting to maintain its exclusive broadcast window on Jan. 1 at 2 p.m. PT in years that it would also host a CFP semifinal. but the rose bowl was willing to temporarily concede their relationship with the big 10 and PAC 12 to host a Quarter Final game in 24-25 But big ten management wanted assurances its time slot in the new contract.

to add to this Lauren Farber (rose bowl chair) Told national sports media and this author quotes : " committee never had any intentions of preventing early expansion and "relinquished that ask."

"In our negotiations, we had initially asked for an exclusive window around the Rose Bowl Game's historic time slot at 2 p.m. PT on Jan. 1" ""While we relinquished that ask, the Tournament of Roses is going to continue to work with the CFP Board of Managers on how we will fit into that CFP playoff rotation. It's our intent to keep the Rose Bowl Game on Jan. 1, but we'll remain flexible on scheduling as needed."

but there is no promise that the rose bowl will be in the cfp in the future in 26 and beyond. But the Rose Bowl will host the cfp in 24/25

How does this impact the regular-season schedule?: for the time being "there is no plans to push back or the season under the current contract but discussions will continue" - said bill Hancock head of the cfp management committee said but he also said this No one is very far down the road on that"

and he also stated and i quote : i doesn't think a 12-team field will have any significant changes on the regular season, other than more meaningful games in November.

What is the format?

The new format will begin in 2024 so for the time being we have 1 more season under the current format

The playoff will consist of the committees 6 conf champ and and the 6 highest ranked teams and with the higher ranked teams with conf champs getting a first round bye the other ranked teams fighting in the first round each team will be out with each lost and each highest seed will have a choice of playing at home or a neutral field but lets talk about dates The first round of the playoff in 2024 will take place the week of Dec. 21, likely late in that week. The specific dates will be announced later.

but for the 24/25 Season

the four quarterfinal games and two semifinal games will be played in bowls on a rotating basis. The 2024 quarterfinals will take place in the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl, while the Cotton Bowl and Orange Bowl will host the semifinals. The 2025 quarterfinals will take place in the Cotton, Orange, Rose and Sugar, while the Fiesta and Peach will host the semifinals.

The national championship games will be played Jan. 20, 2025, in Atlanta, and Jan. 19, 2026, in Miami.

the Cfp And you

As we get closer to conference Division championship games we are also getting closer to the conference champ game (SEC title game PAC 12 champ game and the Big 10 champ game respectively) so for new folks let's discuss the College Football Playoff Committee (“CFPC”) and what the committee looks at when they rank teams.

OVERVIEW and You

The CFP is an event to find college football’s national champion. Every game counts.

RANKINGS and You

The champion gets selected by the CFPC. The selection committee ranks the top 25 teams and assigns the top four to Playoff Semifinal sites.based on the members’ evaluation of the teams’ performance on the field, using conference championships won, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, and comparison of results against common opponents to decide among teams that are comparable.

SELECTION COMMITTEE and You

The selection committee consists of 13 individuals with experience as coaches, student-athletes, college administrators and journalists, along with sitting athletics directors.

Members of the committee are Mitch Barnhart, Tom Burman, Boo Corrigan (chair), Rick George, Chet Gladchuk, Jime Grobe, Warde Manuel, Will Shields, Gene Taylor, Joe Taylor, John Urschel, Rod West and Kelly Whiteside.

TRADITION and You

The New Year’s holiday period belongs to college football, with two Playoff Semifinal games rotating annually among the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl Game and Sugar Bowl. (these bowls rotate every other year to be playoff games). For example, this year’s playoff games are the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl.

CHAMPIONSHIP MONDAY and You

The two teams that win the Playoff Semifinals compete for the CFP National Championship. The national championship game is in a different city each year, always on a Monday night.

UNIVERSAL ACCESS and You (division 2 teams)

Every Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team has equal access to the CFP based on its performance during the regular season. No team automatically qualifies.

GOVERNANCE and You

University presidents and chancellors from all 10 FBS conferences and Notre Dame serve as the board of managers and govern the administrative operations, with commissioners and Notre Dame athletics director (the Management Committee) managing the event. A small staff in the CFP office in Irving, Texas, carries out the day-to-day responsibilities.

bye week and division championships oh my!

We have arrived at a critical juncture in the 22nd season as the Alabama Crimson Tide travels to Baton Rouge to take on the LSU Tigers in a night game in Death Valley for the Sec West Championship!( November 5th at 6 ct/7 et on espn)

Here are some things to keep in mind:

1) Alabama will have a bye week and new starting cornerback Eli ricks had himself a banner week with 2 tackles and multiple forced pass breakups and possibly the starting role at corner for the defense, but we will see what coach has in store for us on that.

2) Demarco “Hitman” Williams also had a great night with 12 tackles and 1 sack, earning himself defensive player of the week with 5 assists.

3) Meanwhile, Jordan Battle and Brian Branch were teeing off on the bulldog offense.

Now, let’s switch over to offense and discuss quarterback and receivers.

1) Bryce Young - Out of his 35 attempts, he netted himself 249 yards passing with 2 touch downs ultimately putting the game away against the bulldogs

2) Highly touted wide receiver TYLER HARRELL made his debut with

REC1 YDS12 TD0 AVG12

Now let’s shift out attention to the sec east with Georgia vs Tennessee and what's on the line there. Tennessee and Georgia are fighting for control in the sec east and an inside track to Atlanta, and who ever wins the Alabama-Lsu game, here are some stats to keep in mind for this game:

1) Georgia defense has allowed only 9 .1 points per game with the offense averaging 41.7 themselves. No one has been able to do it yet, but all eyes are on Georgia's defense to see if they can be the ones to contain the Volunteer's high-powered offense.

2) Tennessee offense: Tennessee's offense is running hot this season, averaging 50.1 points per game led by Heisman candidate Hendon Hooker

In short, all 4 teams are fighting for control for their respective divisions and a trip to Atlanta and a cfp berth.
