It Just Keeps Getting Worse
There was a difference between Matthew commenting on Nathan’s fussy habits and Nathan listing every little thing Matthew had done and putting it on blast. It didn’t help that Matthew hadn’t realized there were so many things he did that were annoying to Nathan in the first place. There wasn’t supposed to be a break of communication between them, especially since the last couple of months had gone relatively smoothly to what they’d had to deal with before.
Matthew’s facial expression might’ve shifted in response, an offended twitch to his eye or a slight sinking of the right side of his mouth, but he otherwise made himself appear unaffected. “Fuck you,” he muttered, folding his arms across his chest again. He, at the very least, wasn’t going to go through all the damn irritating things Nathan had gotten up to. “If you hate everything I do, then why don’t you just leave then? No one’s demanding you stick around. Certainly not for my sake. I’m well enough to survive on my own, thank you.”
Nathan looked up at Matthew, ignoring his textbook for the time being. He wasn’t reading it anyway. His whole body seemed to start shaking, and his arms couldn’t decide what the best way to hold on to his trashcan was. He had never felt so anxious or fidgety; it was like his body couldn’t make sense of it’s surroundings when his brain was so focused on his eminent meltdown.
His bottom lip wobbled. “Fine,” Nathan agreed, shoving some of his things into a backpack. Most of it was just homework stuff, but he also grabbed his wallet, keys, phone, laptop, and chargers. He had a feeling he wouldn’t want to come back to the room any time soon. Nathan felt tears slip down his face as he left the room, and felt like an idiot for letting his emotions show through so easily. He was furious, yes, but mostly just overwhelmed. He wasn’t in a position where he could be fighting with anyone right now, he needed to have a comfortable environment, but Matthew hadn’t offered that to him, and now he was a wreck. Nate grabbed his jacket and slung his book bag over his shoulder. “If you’re so happy to be on your own, then have a nice afternoon alone,” Nathan said before stepping out into the hallway.
