Lizzie used to think betrayal had a sound.

Not loud. Not explosive. 

Not the kind that makes people turn their heads. 

Not something dramatic like a slap or a scream.

It was quieter than that.

It sounded like a pen scratching against paper while someone you loved and trusted said, “Don’t worry, it’s nothing.”

The memory still claws at her sometimes — late at night, when the house is too quiet. She remembers that night too clearly.

Ashley had been pacing that night.

Restless. Irritated. Hands trembling. Voice rushed. Desperate. 

“Just sign it, Liz. It’s for a project.”

“A project?” Lizzie frowned, glancing at the papers. “At least let me read—”

“It’s boring legal shit,” Ashley cut her off quickly, shoving a pen into her hand. “You trust me, right?”

That question.

That fucking question.

Of course she trusted her.

She was her sister.

So Lizzie signed. God, she signed. 

Without reading.

Without knowing she had just signed herself into a marriage.

She didn’t know that a few days later, she’d be standing at the altar she was never meant to stand in.

That was the beginning.

And just like that — Lizzie became nothing.

Pain became routine.

Y/N stopped being the woman she once admired. Y/N became someone else entirely.

Lizzie’s heart stuttered. 

That was the first time her voice sounded like it used to.

“I’m sorry.” 

That was it.

That was all it took.

Lizzie broke.

From there, everything was cautious.

Fragile.

Like walking on glass and pretending it didn’t cut. Like both of them were scared to ruin what little they were rebuilding.

Y/N started staying home more.

Stopped bringing women over.

Started noticing things.

“You didn’t eat.”

“I wasn’t hungry.”

“Sit. I’ll cook.”

Since when do you cook for me?

And sometimes...

“What’s this?”

But she didn’t say it.

Lizzie smiles as she reads the note again, her fingers brushing over the handwriting like it’s something sacred.

Lizzie feels sick.

Why are you here? Why now? Everything was finally okay.

Everything after that feels like a blur wrapped in tension.

Ashley sits. Talks. Acts like she has the right.

Like she didn’t ruin lives.

And when she says — “I’m glad I made the right decision.”

Something in Lizzie snaps.

“Right decision!? Are you fucking serious right now?” Lizzie’s voice shakes with anger. “You betrayed me!”

Ashley flinches.

“You set me up! You used me!”

“I didn’t—”

“Yes, you did! You could’ve just left!” Lizzie continues, tears spilling now. “You didn’t have to drag me into your mess! I’m your sister, for fuck’s sake!”

Why wasn’t I enough for you to be honest with?

Silence.

Heavy. Suffocating.

Ashley swallows hard and asks, “You’re happy now, aren’t you?”

Lizzie laughs.

It sounds wrong.

Broken.

“Happy?” she whispers. “Do you even know what I went through?”

Ashley doesn’t answer.

“She humiliated me,” Lizzie continues, voice cracking. “She brought women here. Slept with them. Called me her maid. Treated me like I was nothing.”

Ashley’s face drains of color.

“No… she wouldn’t—”

“She did.” Lizzie cuts her off sharply. “Because you left her. Because you broke her. Because of you.”

That lands.

Ashley looks like she’s been slapped.

“You left her,” Lizzie says. “She loved you. And you just… disappeared.”

Ashley shakes.

“I’m sorry.”

And this time… it sounds real.

You should be.

“I sacrificed you for my freedom.”

Lizzie’s chest tightens.

At least you’re honest now.

When her phone lights up — Y/N calling… Y/N calling… Y/N calling…

Her stomach drops.

Then the message — “I’m on my way home,” panic claws its way into Lizzie’s chest.

Fuck.

What am I supposed to do now?

Everything feels like it’s about to fall apart again.

Like happiness was just borrowed time.

And then —

The car. The door.

Y/N.

“Jesus, you scared me,” Y/N exhales, pulling Lizzie close and pressing a kiss to her forehead. 

Lizzie melts for a second.

She came home early. For me?

“I thought something happened—”

She stops.

Her brows knit together.

“You’ve been crying.”

Of course I have. Everything’s falling apart again.

Lizzie hesitates.

“Someone wants to talk to you.”

Please don’t hate me for this. Please don’t leave me.

The moment Y/N sees Ashley — she goes still.

Completely still.

Her grip on Lizzie tightens. Hard.

Not protective.

Possessive.

“Ashley… you’re back.”

Ashley nods.

Y/N’s expression hardens instantly.

“Why are you here?” She asks coldly.

“I just want to—”

“Don’t.”

Her voice is ice. Tone sharp. Final.

Lizzie watches it unfold, heart pounding so hard it hurts.

“I don’t give a shit about your reasons. Leave.”

Lizzie’s heart pounds harder.

She’s… choosing me?

And then — Y/N pulls her closer. 

Wraps an arm around her waist.

Certain.

Grounding.

Claiming.

“I feel nothing for you anymore,” Y/N says flatly, eyes locked on Ashley.

“Stay away from me and my wife.”

The word hits differently now.

She chose me.

After Ashley leaves, Lizzie moves instinctively and tries to go after her but Y/N stops her and grabs her wrist.

“Where are you going?”

“I’ll go after her—”

Why does that sound like you’re scared I’ll leave?

“She’s my sister.”

“She’s not five,” Y/N mutters, pulling her down onto her lap like she belongs there.

Because she does.

Lizzie exhales shakily.

Why do I feel guilty? Why do I feel like I’m betraying someone no matter what I do?

“She’s not a child,” Y/N mutters against her neck. “She’ll survive. You don’t have to come running towards her and cradle her like a damn toddler.”

Lizzie runs her fingers through Y/N’s hair, conflicted. “You should’ve listened…”

Maybe she deserved that. Maybe she didn’t. I don’t know anymore.

Y/N pulls back, eyes searching hers.

“I thought we agreed to try,” she says quietly. 

We did. Didn’t we? Then why am I still scared?

I pulled away, my gaze locked on hers. “I’m an idiot,” I confessed, a soft laugh escaping me. “A total idiot.”

I scooped her up into my arms, carrying her easily, as if she weighed nothing. She gasped, wrapping her legs around my waist, her arms circling my neck. I carried her to the bed, laying her down gently, then settling beside her, pulling her close. I stroked her hair, her back, her small, trembling body.

“No Wanda,” I declared, my voice firm. “No one but you.”

A relieved sigh escaped her. She nestled into my side, her head on my shoulder, her fingers tracing the outline of my biceps. We lay there for a long time, just holding each other, the silence comfortable, filled with a new, fragile understanding.

Then, a thought struck me. “Wanda,” I mumbled, pulling out my comm. “I need to cancel.”

Natasha stiffened. “No. Let me.”

I looked at her, surprised. She was usually so averse to direct confrontation.

“I want her to know,” she said, her voice small but resolute. “I want her to know that you’re mine. That *we’re* together.”

My heart swelled. My Natasha. Always the fierce one, even when shy. I handed her the comm, pressing the contact for Wanda. It rang once, twice, then Wanda’s smooth voice answered.

“Y/N? You’re early. Impatient, are we?”

Natasha took a deep breath, her hand gripping mine. “Wanda, it’s Natasha.”

A beat of silence from the other end. “Romanoff. To what do I owe the pleasure?” Wanda’s voice was cool, laced with a hint of suspicion.

“I… I’m calling to tell you that Y/N won’t be joining you tonight,” Natasha said, her voice gaining strength with each word. “Or any other night, for that matter.”

Another pause. Then, a low chuckle from Wanda. “Oh? And why is that, darling?”

Natasha squeezed my hand. “Because she’s with me. And she’s staying with me.”

“Is that so?” Wanda’s voice was perfectly even, but I could almost feel the power humming behind it. “And Y/N, do you have anything to say about this sudden change of plans?”

I leaned into the comm, my voice firm and clear. “She’s right, Wanda. I’m off the market. Natasha here has claimed me.”

A sigh from Wanda, a sound of resignation. “Well, I can’t say I’m not disappointed. But I suppose I understand. Romanoff has a way of getting what she wants, even when she’s being shy about it.” A beat of silence. “Just make sure you make her scream louder than she did last night, Y/N. For my entertainment.”

Natasha’s cheeks flushed a deep crimson, but a triumphant smile touched her lips. “She will,” she promised, her eyes meeting mine, a spark of challenge and desire igniting within them. “Believe me, she will.”

She ended the call, then turned to me, her eyes shining. “So,” she whispered, her fingers tracing the line of my jaw, “now that’s settled. What were you saying about round four?”

I grinned, pulling her closer, my lips finding hers. This was it. This was real. And it was going to be so much better than any casual fling. This was Natasha. My Natasha. And I was hers.

It starts as nothing.

That’s the problem.

You don’t even think about it when you say it, just tossing the question into the air like it doesn’t matter, like it won’t land anywhere important.

“Hey… name a woman. A random woman.”

Natasha doesn’t even look up from where she’s leaning against the counter, turning a knife in her hand with that quiet, practiced ease that makes everything she does look effortless.

“Anya.”

Immediate.

No hesitation, no pause, no thinking.

Just the answer.

And that’s what makes you look up.

“…who’s Anya?”

You’re still smiling when you ask, still expecting it to stay light, to stay part of the joke.

Natasha shrugs slightly, like it’s nothing, like it should be nothing.

“Just a name.”

You let out a small laugh, sitting up straighter as your eyes narrow just a little.

“No, that was way too fast to be just a name.”

Now she looks at you, calm, unreadable, but attentive in that quiet way of hers.

“It was random.”

“It didn’t sound random.”

There’s something in your tone now, something sharper than before, and she notices. Of course she does.

Natasha straightens just slightly, her attention settling fully on you as she sets the knife aside.

“I remember a lot of names.”

“You don’t remember what I asked you to buy yesterday.”

There’s the smallest pause. Barely there, but enough for you to catch it.

“…that was different.”

You hum, unconvinced, already standing and closing the distance between you without really deciding to.

“Okay, so where is she from?”

“A mission.”

Too easy.

That answer comes too easily.

You tilt your head, studying her now like you’re trying to pull the truth out of her by force.

“What kind of mission?”

“It was a while ago.”

“That’s not helpful.”

“It’s enough.”

You stop right in front of her, arms crossing loosely, but your focus is sharp now, fixed entirely on her face.

“Natasha.”

She hums softly, like she’s indulging you.

“Mhm?”

“Why do you remember her name that fast?”

There it is again. That flicker. That fraction of a second where something passes through her expression before it smooths out again.

“I told you. It was random.”

You don’t believe her.

Not even a little.

“Okay,” you say, lifting your hand slightly, counting without breaking eye contact, “option one. Ex.”

“No.”

“Too fast.”

“Because it’s not true.”

You lift another finger.

“Agent.”

A pause.

“…yes.”

You blink, caught off guard by how easily she gives you that.

“She was an agent.”

“Oh my God, she’s real.”

There’s a slight tightening in her jaw now, not defensive, just aware.

“I didn’t say she wasn’t.”

You step a little closer, your curiosity now fully turning into something else, something you’re not naming yet.

“What kind of agent?”

“She tried to kill me.”

That stops you completely.

“…what?”

“Twice.”

You stare at her, trying to decide if she’s serious, and the worst part is… she is.

“That’s the woman you picked.”

“You said random.”

You let out a breath that turns into a disbelieving laugh, shaking your head as you look at her.

“So your brain went straight to someone who tried to kill you.”

“She was memorable.”

“Oh, I’m sure she was,” you murmur, but there’s an edge there now, something quieter and more pointed. “Do you think about her often?”

That’s when it shifts.

You see it happen.

Natasha’s posture changes just slightly, her attention sharpening, focusing in on you in a way that suddenly makes you feel like you’re the one being studied now.

“You’re jealous.”

You scoff immediately, even as your chest tightens just a little.

“I am asking questions.”

“Mhm.”

She pushes off the counter slowly, taking her time as she steps toward you, and you already know you’ve made a mistake.

Because now she’s interested.

And when Natasha is interested, she doesn’t let things go.

“You always do this?” she asks softly, stopping just close enough to make your breath hitch without meaning to.

“Do what?”

Her gaze drags over your face, slow, deliberate, like she’s reading every little reaction you’re trying to hide.

“Get like this.”

You frown slightly, defensive.

“I’m not getting like anything.”

Her hand lifts, fingers brushing lightly against your arm, barely there but enough to make your focus slip for a second.

“Possessive,” she murmurs.

Your stomach tightens.

“I am not—”

“You are,” she says quietly, almost amused, stepping just a fraction closer. “It’s subtle. But it’s there.”

You swallow, trying to keep your footing.

“I just think it’s weird you said her name that fast.”

“Of course you do.”

Her fingers trail from your arm to your waist, slow enough that you’re very aware of it, very aware of how easily she settles there, like it’s the most natural thing in the world.

“But that’s not all.”

You try to ignore the way your pulse picks up.

“It is.”

“It’s not.”

Her voice dips slightly, softer now, closer.

“You didn’t just ask who she was.”

You hold her gaze, even as it gets harder to.

“You started guessing. Ex, agent…” she pauses, just long enough to make you feel it, “lover.”

Your breath catches.

“I didn’t say that.”

“You thought it.”

You hesitate, and that’s enough.

Her thumb shifts lightly against your side, slow, absent, like she’s not even thinking about it, which somehow makes it worse.

“…did you like her?” you ask before you can stop yourself.

There’s a flicker of something in her eyes then, something warmer, something that almost looks like satisfaction.

“She tried to kill me.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

Her hand tightens just slightly at your waist, not enough to hold you there, just enough to remind you that she could.

“No,” she says, softer now, but there’s still that teasing edge underneath. “I didn’t like her.”

You exhale, some of the tension slipping out of you before you can hide it.

“Good.”

Her eyebrow lifts just a little.

“Good?”

You roll your eyes, trying to recover.

“You know what I mean.”

“Do I?”

Her voice drops just enough to make it unfair, her forehead almost brushing yours now.

“Because it sounded a little like you didn’t want me liking anyone else.”

Your cheeks warm.

“That’s not—”

Her thumb presses slightly more firmly against your side, grounding you, steadying you, keeping you right where you are.

“Not what?” she asks quietly.

You hesitate again, and she notices. Of course she notices.

“Say it.”

You glare at her, but there’s no real heat behind it anymore.

“I didn’t like it.”

There’s that soft, satisfied hum from her, like she’s been waiting for that.

“Better.”

For a moment, neither of you moves. The air between you feels different now, heavier, but not in a bad way.

Quieter.

“I just…” you start, softer now, your voice losing that defensive edge, “you could’ve just said me.”

And that’s what finally softens her.

Completely.

Her hand relaxes at your waist, her touch gentler now, more careful.

“You’re not random,” she says, and this time there’s no teasing in it, just something steady, something real.

You look at her, really look at her, and it hits harder than you expect.

“If you ask me to name someone that matters,” she continues, her voice low but certain, “it’s you.”

Your chest tightens.

You try to hold onto the bit, onto something lighter.

“…you still said Anya first.”

And there it is again, that small curve of her lips.

“Next time,” she murmurs, her thumb brushing lightly against your side again, softer now, “I’ll say you.”

You narrow your eyes at her, even if you’re already losing.

“There shouldn’t be a next time.”

She leans in just slightly, her voice dropping into something quieter, more certain.

“There will be.”

A small pause.

“You like it when I make you jealous.”

You let out a breath, shaking your head as you push lightly at her shoulder.

“I do not.”

She doesn’t move.

If anything, she looks more sure.

“Mhm.”

You try to step away, and this time she lets you, but her fingers linger just a second longer than they need to, like a reminder.

And that’s the worst part.

Because she’s right.

And now she knows it.

Summary: Love made Natasha Romanoff a liar.

Natalia Romanova was no stranger to lies. In fact, the Black Widow lived and breathed lies like one would oxygen. Slipping past security, seducing vulnerable targets, coaxing out intel: her lies flowed off her tongue like a river down a hill. She could lie right to a man’s face: gently caressing his face in one hand and whispering sweet nothings into his ears, while preparing a dagger to kill him in the other. It was a tiresome life, the constant lying and layers upon layers of fabricated stories, but it was hers and she was content.

Then her great kingdom of lies came toppling down atop her with one fatal misstep. Caught, cornered, and at the end of her line, she begrudgingly accepted the deal of her captor. Spared by Clint Barton and recruited into SHIELD, she chose to turn over a new leaf, to start a new life: one free of the lies and deceits that had dictated her last.

Natalia Romanoff was no liar. Sure she lied for the sake of missions and covers, but to those she knew in her daily life, she was known to be honest, brutally so. She held her truths like a weapon, sharp and deadly enough to cut down even the toughest of opponents with a single stroke of her tongue. It took her all but one conversation with Tony to put him into his place, and only one exchange to knock humility into the arrogant Doctor Strange.

To say people feared the Black Widow would be an understatement. Everyone knew about the bite on the spider, and most steered clear of it.

But not you.

“Avengers, you have a new addition to the team. Everyone, meet (Y/N) (L/N).” Fury announced.

All the Avengers cheered, Tony proclaiming the announcement as a cause for celebration as he popped open a bottle of vintage wine that was probably older than you were. Wanda eagerly welcomed you with a small hug that Thor followed up with of his own, crushing you in his tight bear hold. Clint gave you a wide smile and a congratulatory pat on the back. Steve shook your hand excitedly, expressing great interest in working with you in the future. Only Natasha stood unfazed from her spot on the sofa, making no move to welcome you as she nonchalantly sipped her 80 proof.

“Hi, I’m (Y/N).” You greeted with wide eyes and a sugary sweet smile, making the first introduction yourself. Natasha glanced up from her drink, eyes giving you a quick once over before returning her attention back to her glass, an unimpressed look on her face.

Steve frowned at Natasha’s coldness, clearing his throat loudly in disapproval. The redhead rolled her eyes in exasperation and placed her cup down onto the ottoman. Her eyes met yours and the intensity of her gaze seemed to pierce right through you. “Hello, (Y/N), I’m Natasha. I would welcome you to the team and spout some bullshit about how glad I am you are joining us, but to be honest, I don’t really think you belong.” Her words immediately soured the mood of the room, and the atmosphere turned heavy and tense. The other Avengers stopped their conversations, all of them turning to where the infamous Black Widow was now cornering her victim. “Look around you, you’re in the presence of self made heroes, science experiments, and an actual god. Do you really think you can compare? The only one you come close to is me, and even then, I have decades of experience over you, and those decades will be the difference between life and death on the field. So I won’t play around with pleasantries like the rest of them. You don’t belong here and will only be a hindrance to the team.”

A silence filled the room. Everyone’s eyes were on Natasha, disbelief and disappointment in their gaze, but Natasha’s eyes were on you, watching, waiting. She waited for your face to freeze, for that smile to slip off your face, for the tears to pool in your eyes. She waited for you to break down into sobs, or explode into anger. She waited for you to prove her right about you not belonging, because what kind of hero would let some hurtful comments get to them?

Instead, you laughed.

Not a loud obnoxious laugh meant to save face, or a slow breathy laugh meant to drive away the tears; but a genuine unfiltered laughter that made her stomach turn in ways it had never before. The sound was new and Natasha’s eyes widened just slightly in surprise. And when your eyes met hers, she saw no anger, sadness, nor hostility in them. The light in your (eye/color) eyes was just as bright as before, if not more so, and the pleasant fluttering in Natasha’s stomach did a flip.

“I do stand out among all of you guys don’t I? Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, it's crazy that I am even in the same room with legends like you all. I guess I have a lot to catch up on if I am to prove my worth, but I will do just that. You have my word Ms. Romanoff.” You promised. The easy smile on your lips and the twinkling in your eyes pulled Natasha in, and she found herself unconsciously leaning in closer before catching and stopping herself.

Scowling, she dropped your gaze and picked her glass back up from the table.

Natasha couldn’t breathe, the room around her seemed to grow smaller, trapping her inside their walls, suffocating her. Voices were screaming into her ears as the disembodied heads spun around her, leaving her confused and dizzy. Faces of all her victims, faces of the lives she had taken, all haunting her inside the prison she had built within her own mind.

She knew she was dreaming. Knew that these ghosts of her past weren’t real, weren’t really there, but the terror that was still brewing in her guts was. The fear that gripped her throat was very real. Her dream self clutched her head, desperately trying to wake up from this hellish nightmare, but to no avail. The voices kept shouting, the heads kept spinning, and there was no escape.

But then a voice called out to her, soft and gentle, but somehow louder than the screaming that seemed to have only gotten more intense. A hand was extended to the crumbled Natasha on the floor and she grabbed onto it without any hesitation. She was pulled away- away from the screaming voices, away from the angry floating heads, away from all of it- and pulled towards a light.

Gasping, Natasha jerked awake. Her throat was burning as she gulped down air to relieve the tightness in her lungs. Sweat dripped down her neck and back, cold air sending a shiver down her spine as she tried to regain her breathing. A hand was on her back, gently rubbing up and down, and Natasha leaned towards the touch, using it to anchor her. A soft voice was whispering words into her ear, words that she couldn’t quite make out in her muddled state, but still found comfort in.

“It was just a dream. You’re safe. I’m here. You’re safe.” She finally heard, the voice penetrating through the fog. The hand on her back felt firmer, more real, and she registered a second hand on her own. She looked down and saw herself clutching onto a hand, the skin turning white around her grip, but not relenting in returning her hold.

“I’m safe.” She repeated and the hand on her own squeezed in acknowledgment. Her heart slowed down its beating, and her breathing stabilized as she repeated the two words aloud. “I’m safe. I’m safe.” When the dream melted away and she finally gained full consciousness of her surroundings, Natasha turned to face you. She took in your tousled state (hair a mess, eyes tired, clothes crumbled), saw your bed behind you (the sheets thrown to the side and pillows tossed onto the floor), and knew that you had rushed out of bed the second you had heard her cry out in her sleep. The second thing she took in was how close the two of you were, faces mere inches away from one another, but she made no movement to pull away. Instead, her eyes fluttered with exhaustion, and she leaned back into your chest, hand still holding yours. Your other hand was still on her back, continuing its soothing massage that lulled Natasha into another sleep, this time, safe from the nightmares of her past, because she was safe, because you were there.

The party raged on, masses of people on the dance floor, alcohol flowing all around, music blaring from the stereo. Natasha was honestly done with it all. The last thing she had wanted was to attend a party after coming back from such a tiring mission, but yet there she was, sitting all pretty in a bar stool, at a party she did not want to be at, feeling out of place. Arms wrapped around her waist, and it was only when she caught the familiar scent of your perfume that she relaxed into the hold.

“Someone doesn’t look happy.” You cooed, pressing a light kiss to her neck.

Natasha smiled with a roll of her eyes, “We both know I would rather be in bed right now than here at this party.”

She could feel you smirk against her skin, “Oh? But a party offers so much excitement and fun, what could a bed possibly offer to beat that?”

Natasha twisted around in your hold, arms circling your neck as she pulled you closer for a short but fiery kiss, “Why don’t we go to bed and find out?”

The light in your eyes got brighter, your smile wider, and you leaned in, sweeping her into a longer kiss, breathless like every single kiss always was. Her mind went blank, any thoughts she had wiped away until you were all she could think about: the way your hands gripped her waist, the way your lips met her pace, the way your tongue slipped past her lips. The feeling was gone too soon.

“Later.” You promised, much to her discontent. Then you were pulling her to the dance floor and Natasha couldn’t even protest as you did. Being in your arms made the party much more bearable, especially when you held her close like that. She leaned her head against your shoulder as the two of you slowed danced to the ballad, and Natasha no longer felt out of place, because she belonged in your arms.

"I can’t do this anymore.”

Looking up in surprise, you glanced over at the redhead with widened eyes, eyebrow furrowing in confusion at the sudden outburst. “Do what?”

“This. Us. I can’t do this.” She clarified.

Slowly dropping the pile of paperwork that you had been looking through, you turned to face the redhead completely, “What? What do you mean? I don’t understand where this is coming from.” You looked completely taken aback, “Did I do something wrong?”

Natasha pushed off the wall she had been leaning on, running a hand through her hair, “No you didn’t do anything. It’s me. I just can’t do this. I can’t give you what you want (Y/N).”

You walked over to the woman, reaching for her hands, cradling them gently in yours, “The only thing I want is you.”

Natasha shook her head, pushing your hands away, the action making you frown, “No, you want more. You want a wife, (Y/N). You want a mother to your children. You want a future. And I can’t give you any of that.”

“I would never ask you to do anything you didn’t want to.” You reasoned, taking a step towards her, just wanting to hold her. To hold her and reassure all her worries and doubts away.

“Stop.”

The tone in which she said the command made you freeze. And suddenly Natasha saw the weight of the situation finally begin to dawn onto you as you realized that she was being completely serious.

“Nat, you’re not actually-”

“I can’t do this.” She repeated, shaking her head again, more firmly than before.

Your mouth opened to give a response but Natasha cut you off.

“I don’t want to do this.” She doubled down. “Not anymore.”

Distraught flashed plainly across your face, “You don’t mean that-” You started.

“I do.” She interrupted, the finality in her words hitting their mark as you flinched, “I tried (Y/N), I really did.”

“Talia…please” You pleaded, and Natasha almost broke at that. Your eyes were wide and tears were welling in them, your lips were trembling as you tried to keep them from curving into a frown, and your hands were shaking by your side.

“I don’t love you (Y/N). Maybe I never did. But I know I never will. It’s best you accept that now.” She stated, hoping that her voice wasn’t as shaky as she felt. She saw you speechless, saw the heartbreak and devastation on your face, struggling to keep her own heartbreak from showing up on her face. Unable to bear it any longer, she turned and walked away, the word “liar” screaming in her head with each step she took.

When people saw the sudden distance between the two of you, they all blamed it on Natasha.

"I guess the venom of the Black Widow finally ran it’s course." They whispered to one another. “Of course it did, no one can that fate.”

The bleeding wouldn’t stop, trickling down her side, pooling around her, making her disgustingly wet and sticky. “Dammit.” She growled in pain.

“Language.” You reprimanded, placing a firm hand on her side, putting pressure on the wound to stop some of the bleeding. She bit back a remark about you becoming Steve. “Is there anywhere else that hurts?” You asked.

“More like where does it not hurt.” She barked back, but when you didn’t give her the pleasure of an answer, she sighed, “My head.” Your hand immediately went to it, and she hissed. “Doesn’t mean you have to touch it!” The light from the flashlight you held as you inspected her forehead made her eyes burn and vision blurry. “And get that light out of my face, it's making me dizzy.”

You obeyed, placing the already flickering flashlight onto the ground beside you, where it’s faint light gave the two of you some comfort from the pitch black void of the cave you were stuck in. “The explosion must’ve thrown you back pretty hard, I think you may have a concussion.” You muttered.

“Just my luck.” She cursed and suddenly your hands were on her again, pulling her against you, back flush to your chest. “What are you doing?” She demanded.

“It’s easier for me to place pressure on your side like this.” You waved off, arms encircling her. Natasha wasn’t sure if she believed you, but she didn’t complain either. Being in your arms somehow washed away much of the pain, and she felt herself melt into your embrace. God. She missed this. Missed you. “Don’t relax too much, you can’t fall asleep. If you do, you might not wake up.” You warned, and Natasha’s eyes snapped back open.

Silence filled the room, broken only by your occasional check ins of her, asking if she was still awake. Natasha was struggling to keep her eyes open now, the blood loss making her weak, and the concussion making her sleepy. She was so tired. The darkness was calling her, beckoning her. It promised her salvation from the pain. She could just close her eyes for one-

“Natasha.” You called out, drawing her back out from the void. Natasha jerked to attention, almost letting out a groan when the pain also came back just as fast. You could feel her losing her fight beneath your arms, “Hey stay awake. You can do this. The team is coming. They’re coming to save us. Just wait a little longer. We’ll be alright.” You promised, hoping to give her something to fight for.

“What if they don’t make it in time?” Natasha weakly asked.

“We’ll be fine.” You reassured. Natasha’s eyes were struggling to stay open, her eyelids getting heavier with each second. “ Hey.” You tried again. “ You have to stay away okay? They’re coming to rescue us. We just have to hold on.”

Natasha definitely didn’t believe you, but she also didn’t want to break your spirit. “Oka-”

Then it settled onto her all at once. She was dying. She was dying and she was still lying. Why was it that she only ever lied to you? Why did she feel the need to lie to you? To protect you? Why? Lying has only ever hurt you. And suddenly she didn’t want to lie anymore. Not to you. Never to you.

“(Y/N)?”

You hummed in response.

“I love you.”

For a moment no one said anything, the darkness drowning in an even deeper silence, then she felt a kiss being placed on the top of her head.

“I know.” The two words washed over Natasha, a mix of odd relief and hope, “So hold on okay? Fight for me. For us. Everything will be alright Natalia. Just keep holding on a bit longer.”

Natasha was still dying, she was still bleeding, she was still tired, but she wanted to fight. Fight for you, “I will.” And she wasn’t lying. She kept her eyes open, even when her body screamed for her to close them, but she wouldn’t, she couldn’t, because she had made you a promise, and she wasn’t a liar. Even when she felt the heat leave her body, making her shudder in the cold, she held on, refusing to give into the darkness. You had stopped asking her if she was awake, trusting her to uphold her word.

Time was moving so agonizingly slow. The flashlight had long flickered out, and the two of you sat in darkness, but with your arms still around her, she didn’t fear the darkness. Then, a peek of light.

The entrance to the cave crumbled away, and light flooded in. Natasha had to squint her eyes from the intensity as silhouettes rushed into the cave.

She felt herself being pulled up by strong arms, cradled into them. Steve’s worried face looked down at her. Her body ached and she was barely conscious but she managed a weak smile. You had been right, the team had come. You two had been saved. She turned to look back at you, to catch the knowing smile she knew you would have on your face but was stopped by the person holding her.

“Natasha, it’s best if you don’t.” Steve’s gruff voice warned, trying to turn her further from you, but Natasha didn’t listen, twisting in the hold.

Her eyes widened in shock.

Your body laid crumbled on the floor, head leaning against the rock like you were resting, but your eyes were wide open. Wide open, unmoving, and lifeless. The light from the outside illuminated the cave, revealing the secrets that the darkness had kept. The blood that had seeped into the ground, into Natasha’s clothes, into her hair; they weren’t all hers.

She saw the holes in your torso, explosions of red that stood out even in the dark exterior of your uniform. Saw the pain in your eyes, frozen in time by death. But it was what she felt that tore her apart. It was the horror that brewed inside her guts as she took in the scene. It was the tightening in her lungs, constricting her breathing to nothing. It was the pain that streaked through her heart, each one more intense than the last.

Riddled in bullets and dying, you had still held her. You had still consoled her: made her promise to hold on until help arrived.

“We just have to hold on.”

“They’re coming to save us.”

“Everything will be alright.”

You had whispered those words into her ears, promising them to her while you had been bleeding out, one foot already in Death’s door. You had told her that everything would be alright, that the two of you would make it out alright when you knew damn well that you were too far gone.

She could still hear you whispering into her ear, the ghost of your breath tickling her neck.

“Everything will be alright, Natalia.”

But love has made you a liar.
