The Opal is the birthstone of October. The name, “Opal”, means “to see a change in color” and might make one drift off to daydreaming and envision a rainbow following a summer rain. Ancient monarchs treasured the opal mainly for its protective powers. Thus, they were set in into their crowns and worn in necklaces. The opal dates back to prehistoric times and according to Arabic legend, fell from heaven in a flash of lightening. The Latin word, “opalus”, means precious jewel, and that it is. It contains up to thirty percent water and must be protected from harsh chemicals and heat. If not, they can cause the opal to dry out and may lead to a loss in its luster and cracking. It can also be broken very easily and must be guarded from any knocks or blows. The opal is made up of a non-crystallized silica, that can be found near the earth’s surface, typically in areas where geothermal springs once existed. Opal is mainly found in Australia, where ninety-five percent of the world’s black and white opals are mined. They are also found in Hungary, Brazil, Mexico, the United States and Canada. It symbolizes hope, loyalty, happiness, innocence and purity.

Let’s talk about diamonds: everything you need to know about cut Let’s talk about diamonds: everything you need to know about cutImage credit: Instagram.com/matthewely_ Ads by Kiosked SHARE 27th Sep 2017 by DANIELLE GAY BRIDAL NEWS Here’s what you need to know about cut. When it comes to diamonds, cut is one of the key elements and one of the four Cs – think, carat, cut, colour and clarity – that determines their grade and how precious they are. If an engagement is on the cards, there are a few things you should know about cut. Vogue spoke to luxury Woollahra-based jeweller Matthew Ely who filled us in on everything to know. What does diamond “cut” actually mean? “I feel cut is the most important of all the diamonds properties,” Ely says. “If you take a diamond from rough, all the other properties that exist in the diamond are already there - the colour, clarity and carat weight already exist. Cut is the only human touch that can make a diamond crystal more beautiful. A diamond’s “cut” actually refers to its proportions, symmetry and polish, and not the shape of the diamond as many are often led to believe.” What should we look out for when it comes to diamond cut? “Any diamond that is cut to the best proportions and symmetry possible will have the advantage of more sparkle. This diamond cutting is done by hand and, as you find in any trade, there are different skill levels. Cut is the most important aspect of your diamond, because it’s the only way the same diamond crystal is either going to look bright and sparkle its whole life or once dirty lose a huge amount of life and fire. Fire (which refers to the rainbow spectrum caused by the dispersion of light radiating from a diamond) and scintillation (the flashes of light or “sparkle”) are two primary effects on a cut’s appearance.” How should we rank or determine a good cut? “Excellent: maximum fire and brilliance. Reflects nearly all of the light that enters the diamond, creating exceptional sparkle and life. Very good: properly reflects most of the light that enters the diamond, producing superior fire and brilliance. Under normal lighting conditions, appears very similar to "excellent cut", but is avai
