We are the Naturskyddsforeningen, otherwise known as the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, a non-profit environmental organization based in Stockholm. With over 200,000 members, we make a difference by spreading knowledge about and proposing solutions for environmental threats locally, regionally, nationally and globally. We hope to serve as a hub for everyone who cares about the environment, working together to improve our world.

Our Goals
A rapid and just climate transition: With our goal of being nearly climate neutral by 2030, we hope to transform communities to be more sustainable and stop unnessecary climate emmisions
Vibrant and healthy land-based ecosystems: Mining, agriculture, and forestry practices are a big cause of biodiversity loss on land. We are currently working to ensure that these practices are being carried out sustainably, staying within the limits of nature.
Healthy waters from source to sea: Through advocating for small-scale fishing operations, biodiverse wetlands, and an end to eutrophication, we hope to promote sustainable fishing practices and protect our water sources.
A non-toxic environment for healthy ecosystems and humans: We hope to introduce more information, set stricter regulations, and reduce the production of harmful substances so that they will pose less of a threat on us and our enviornments.
Environmentally conscious people in sustainable communities: We are striving to to create solutions for the problems that we humans have caused by changing our lifestyles and transforming our cities to be more sustainable.
A strong and influential popular movement: With our large membership, we have the ability to shape public opinion both locally and nationally, helping to influence the enviornmental debate in a positive direction.
Operation: Save the Bees
In Sweden, more than 80 of our wild bee species are on the verge of disappearing— That's one third of all our wild bees. By signing and joining our campaign, you can help us remove toxic pesticides, one of the highest causes of bee deaths, from our stores.

The white-backed woodpecker plays a vital role in our ecosystems. While we have done a lot for the white-backed woodpecker, there is still more work to do.
You can help by:
Looking out for white-backed woodpeckers or their peck marks and logging them in our inventory
Setting up supplementary feeding stations in winter months
Preserving deciduous forests
Joining our white-backed woodpecker network
About Stockholm
Stockholm is Sweden's capital city, located on Sweden’s southeast coast between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea. It has an area of 188 km squared, with a population of 995,574. The climate here is similar to Nova Scotia, with short but cold winters and warm, sunny summers.

Stockholm City Hall, otherwise known as Golden Hall, is one of Stockholm's most iconic buildings. It is open to the public through guided tours, which detail the history and construction of the building.
The Royal Palace of Stockholm is one of Europe's largest palaces, and serves as the main residence of the Swedish Royal Family. Most of the palace is open to the public, with many guided tours suitable for all ages.

History of Stockholm
Officially founded in 1252 to protect from sea invasions, Stockholm quickly grew to Sweden’s largest city by the end of the 13th century. However, in 1519, Stockholm was captured by the King of Denmark, who orchestrated the execution of over 80 Swedish nobles to further strengthen his power. This event is now known as the “Stockholm Bloodbath”, and led to King Gustav Vasa reclaiming Stockholm in 1523.
By the 16th century, Stockholm had grown into a bustling trading port, controlling much of the trade in Europe. It was then named the capital of Sweden in 1634, where it continued to grow during the next two centuries. Many of the palaces, churches, and civic buildings from that era are now major landmarks.
The industrial revolution (19th century) brought an economic and population boom, bringing growth, opportunities, and urban development, leading to the Stockholm we know today.

What is HDI?
The Human Development Index is the UN's scale for ranking how developed countries are. Countries are ranked from 0 to 1, with 1 being the most developed, and 0 being the least developed.
HDI Indicators
The HDI ranking isn't just arbitrary. It is made up of many indicators, which are split into three main categories.
The first category is about having a long and healthy life. Some of the things that contribute to this are sanitation measures, which are especially important during childhood. Another contributor to this section is safety. A lot of people are dying because of basic safety rules not being enforced.
Another category is education. If people are educated, they can get decent jobs that pay well, and help to decrease poverty. However, in some places, it costs lots of money to go to school, and if you can't go to school, it is not likely that you will get a good enough paying job to allow your children to go to school, and so the cycle continues.
The third category of indicators is a decent standard of living. Part of this is human rights that are being wrongfully considered as privileges. For example, if their citizens think that having clean water is a privilege, the government needs to work harder on their country to make clean water a right, and a normal thing to have.
Often times, these indicators are related to eachother. When one indicator goes up/down, the other one does too. In this graph, as years of education goes up, so does life expectancy.
