I’m abt to be real annoying, sorry in advance lol
not to take over this post or something, but like… I felt this clip so hard. I was like this my whole life, just this weird, quiet, slightly off beat, ‘uncool’ kid. And when you live in isolation like that, you turn to music/movies/books/art to provide the company and solace you lack in your real life. (Gerard also talked about this near the beginning of LOTMS, which is cool. I think it’s around 6-8 minutes in, but I’d have to double check).
And I mean, regarding throwing myself into the arts as a distraction, hell, I still do it. Why do you think I have an mcr blog? It feels like they keep me company, as I don’t have anyone I talk to regularly irl. I focus on their music, their lore, or stuff written about them, etc, so I don’t have to deal with the silence of real life.
But you spend all those years honing skills in the arts just because it keeps you safe. Then, when the storm has passed, you turn around and realize how you’ve always been silent, and how badly you were treated, and suddenly you realize you want to be heard and seen through your art. It becomes both a part of you and part of the world, and it also becomes a fuck you. SEE me. I am louder than you are now, and I spent my time honing my craft, and this is my revenge.
At the same time though, using art as revenge is the same as giving yourself to other people, specifically those who’ve wronged you, which is interesting. As such, I’m at a constant back and forth as to how I direct my art (making it for me vs community vs as revenge, etc). But I fucking understand him so hard here.
Anyways, sorry if that was annoying, I just really love clips where they talk about this lol
