Landscape paintings have always been an essential element within Canadian art. Artists such as Emily Carr, Tom Thompson and the Group of Seven have historically documented the beauty and mysteries of true Canadian identity. Consignor auction house recently sold a newly discovered Lawren Harris sketch. A truly memorizing depiction of a single Island reflecting its beauty on a shining lake. This autumn themed piece was featured in the second Group of Seven exhibition in 1921, just painted a year or two before. With its early history and simple beauty Algoma (Algoma Sketch 48), nearly doubled its estimate at last week's live auction, with a final sale price of $977,500.00

A ‘Poor Girls’ Alternative to Modern Masters

Being a “new collector “might make some feel that they have to lower their standers either due to their budget, space or knowledge of the market. Luckily for you, that is not the case! There can be many reasons for purchasing a work of art but we at Navillus believe that when deciding what art work to buy should come from if you gain some amount of pleasure from the piece itself. Every collector knows that buying art you enjoy to look at is an investment; either personal and/or financial.

Our current exhibition is special as it caters to collectors of all spectrums.  Atmospheric Abstraction featuring works by Janet Read could easily be mistaken for an exhibition of Abstract Expressionists. The Canadian artist, who is inspired by water, wind and sky, captures the subtle yet dominating beauty of deep colors are large brush strokes.  Shades of red, blue, green and pink can ignite a smile upon any viewers face as the composition is at times so abstract there are multiple interpretations.  

We would suggest Janet’s work to new collectors for a handful of reasons;

1. Her work ranges in size from 12x12 inches, 24x24 inches up to 60x48 inches, meaning you can choose which canvas size works best for your environment. Keep in mind, though there are smaller works, this does not mean they are ‘lesser works’, they are simply easier to hang if you live in a studio apt.

2. Her prices will surprise you as much as her art will. Sensationally affordable works that are as low as $450 CAD. and as expensive as $6,200 CAD.  Her average work is sized as 24x24 inches as costs between $1,500 to $1,800 CAD. So for female collectors, this means you can own a substantial sized artwork for less than a designer handbag!

3. When you go to museums do you faun over Rothkos, Pollacks and De Koonings? If you love Abstract Expressionist art, Janet’s work embodies similar characteristics of impressionable spontaneity with her brushstrokes. Owning art isn’t always about brand name but also genre and style!
