“the whole is greater than the sum of its parts” is arguably a little misleading, since a colimit is actually a quotient of the sum of its objects (thus in a sense less than the sum of its parts)

actually the whole "quotients being smaller than whatever you're quotienting" thing is only generally true if you work with the Axiom of Choice. There are ¬AC models of set theory where you can build quotients of ℝ that are strictly bigger than ℝ.
