hwang byeol was born on december 21st, 1999 in columbus, ohio. she was raised by her two loving parents and grew up with her two “older” brothers. the three are triplets and danielle is technically the youngest. all three triplets showed a passion for dance at a young age, and their parents encouraged this as hanjae (father) was a professional dancer before suffering a knee injury.
the family moved to south korea, in 2010 after receiving news hanjae’s father was ill. during this time, danielle lost a lot of herself and could only find happiness in her dance. during a school dance club meeting, an sm scout saw danielle stood out as a dancer and gave her a form to register for the upcoming audition rounds. danielle breezed through the auditions, however judges noticed her style was more masculine from how she would dance with her brothers, and decided it would be best for her to debut with nct dream in 2016.
her grandmother was beyond proud of her and gave her the name hanbyeol (한별) meaning one star as she would be the star of nct as the only female member. (the name also came from her late grandfather, daehan). this was how danielle chose her stage name byeol (별) as she wanted to be a star for her grandparents.
