winn could never hate kara, no matter what she did. well, maybe if she’d tried to kill him or something, but that was besides the point. he didn’t hate her for this. and he wasn’t ungrateful for her return at all. but this was a complicated situation that was bound to bring up complicated emotions. she had to understand that, right? he was so happy to have her back - in fact, he was sure that the tears he’d shed were partially tears of joy. but to know that your best friend was actually alive for the years you’d thought that she was dead, completely gone…that’s tough, to say the least. maybe he should’ve reacted differently, but he couldn’t help what he felt. his head was still spinning.
he accepted the letter, confused as to why she’d think he wouldn’t want it. “thanks,” he murmured quietly, tone not insincere. he wanted to tell her not to go, but he knew trying to keep her from alex would be a lost cause. he simply watched her go, fingering the note in his hands. he didn’t want to read it here. he wanted to be home; he didn’t want to have to deal with whatever strong emotions he was sure this letter would bring up while driving home. so, with a sigh, winn tucked the folded note into his pocket, and headed off to the car, feeling heavier than he’d felt in recent memory.
he tried to take a few minutes to calm down upon arriving at his apartment. he poured himself a glass of water, and had drank it seated on his couch, staring blankly ahead the whole time, consumed with his thoughts. glass empty, winn took a deep breath, and then opened the note.
he was right; he couldn’t have dealt with this at the cemetery.
she loved him? like, loved him loved him? he couldn’t believe it. that couldn’t possibly be true, he must be interpreting this wrong. there was no way…suddenly his hands were trembling and his palms were sweating and his eyes were getting watery again. another deep breath, and he was wiping his hands on his jeans, fishing his phone out of his pocket almost feverishly. he needed some answers. the message he left on kara’s voicemail was rambling and panicked, voice trembling, but he had to call her and get her over as soon as possible.
“um, h-hi, kara, um…it’s winn. obviously, of course it’s winn - you have caller ID. um…um, anyways, i…i read your note, and…and i’d really like to talk to you about it, so, um, if…if you could just…just come to my apartment as soon as you can, that…that’d be great.”
kara couldn’t bring herself to walk the few steps to alex’s door. she knew she had to talk to winn and figure stuff out with him, but she didn’t want to stay hovering. alex had probably heard it from sarah that she was alive, and knew that the first thing she was going to do was talk to winn. they way they had left off the morning of her “death” wasn’t a nice way. she felt horrible deep down that their last conversation was a fight. she didn’t even remember what it was about, but she knew that it had made her feel so bad. probably the worst she had felt since she had first moved to earth.
which is probably the reason she had decided to walk around town. she knew she probably should go talk to a list of people, but that wasn’t her biggest priority at the moment. she wanted to talk to winn, and rao it was taking so much for her not to just fly over there and see if he was okay. she knew it was going to take a while for him to take in the note, and she knew that she had to give him space. but she didn’t anticipate it being this hard. it was probably harder than anything else she had ever had to do since becoming supergirl. she had gotten a hot dog and was half way through it when she ran into a few high school “friends” and got caught up in a conversation, thanking the gods above that she had some form of distraction to keep her from thinking about winn for a while.
it wasn’t until the old classmates left that kara looked down at her phone and noticed that winn had called her. listening to the voicemail, she felt her heart skip a few beats. he wanted to talk to her about it ?
