Today is also the birthday of Erik Comas. Here Erik himself talks about the day Ayrton Senna saved his life in Spa-Francorchamps 1992:

“I would have died without the help of Senna: first, because my Ligier would explode if he had not turned off the engine and then because I would have been stifled by my own tongue if he had not sustained my neck while I was passed out.

“Ayrton stopped to help me when even my own teammate had passed straight. He had a pure and sensational heart.

”Two years later I was the last driver to see him on the track, while he received medical attention beside the wreckage of his Williams. When they had taken him away I got out from my car and stood next to his helmet. Then I felt that he had died… I was devastated because I could not do for him what he did for me.“
