Statue of Princess Takushit

Copper alloy hollow cast statue of the princess-priestess Takushit. It was found in 1880, in Lower Egypt, on the hill of Kom-Toruga, near Lake Mariut, south of Alexandria. It had ritual, votive, and funerary functions.

The use of the statue was ceremonial while the priestess was alive, and was part of the ritual equipment of the sanctuary, in which there was a priestess. After her death, it was used for votive and funerary ends and it decorated her tomb, which, according to the custom of the time, is located within the sanctuary precinct.

Welcome to a brand new week! Let’s kick it off with Mythology Monday. One of the things we like the most about early modern title pages is the way they incorporate classical mythology into their imagery, and this 1661 edition of the Oeuvres of French physician André du Laurens is no exception. The figure on the top is Apollo, the sun god, identifiable by the rays of light surrounding his head. The figure on the left is in all likelihood Saturn, the god of time, who was often depicted as an old man. The final figure is Salus, the Roman goddess of safety and well-being. She was often equated with the Greek deity Hygeia, who was believed to be one of the daughters of Aesculapius, the god of healing. In this illustration, she holds her trademark pentagram. The letters on the outside spell SALUS in Latin, while the interior letters spell ΥΓΕΙΑ (Hygeia) in Greek.
