Week Eight Blog - Industry Perspectives
Set Up
Wesley and his dad watch his mother’s coffin get cremated.
Later they work on their farm in rural Australia.
Inciting Incident
The inciting incident has happened before the story with the death of the mum.
Obstacle #1
Wesley’s inability to deal with the concept of death and to get over that fact makes it hard for him to grief properly.
Reaction
Over time he learns to come to terms with it and enter the grieving process.
Obstacle #2
The father tries to distract Wes from thinking about the mum (subconsciously to distract himself) which only masks his true feelings and emotions and stops him from grieving properly.
Reaction
It stops both of them from grieving properly and achieving their goal of getting over the pain, forcing them both to learn to come to terms with the death and open up about their feelings in order to move on.
Conclusion
Because they both finally learn to embark on the grieving process properly they can start to return to normal life and look back on the mums life fondly.
The song is Surrender by Dan Romer, it can be found on spotify :)
Wesley Plot
Wesley and in father live in rural australia alone together, both coming to terms with the loss of the mother one month prior. Wesley seems deeply effected by the death and has trouble coming to terms with the concept of it. As a result his father, who talks about the life and death of his wife distantly and unfondly, tries his best to distract his son from the grieving process and they engage in bonding activities. Unable to escape the pain, Wesley one day asks his father if they can spread his mums ashes to which he reluctantly agrees. This step initially brings up bad wounds for Wesley but ultimately helps him take a step towards accepting the death and moving back to a normal life.
A few days later, Wesley finds his previously brave and unemotional father crying alone. After prodding, the true emotional extent of his wifes death becomes apparent to Wesley and he realizes that his dad was far more affected than he realized. This step of opening up about his feelings however helps the father begin to go through the grieving process and he begins to show signs of getting on with normal life again.
The story ends with Wesley and his dad visiting the ashes spot once again with them both thanking her.
Plotting Illogicalities
1. Identify the plotting issue being raised. Why is it problematic for the story’s logic?
Although a great, memorable scene, why is the spider deemed the best method of killing Bond? There are many plot holes in this scene that can sadly distract the viewer from the thrill of the spider. The spider must have been placed in the room by someone so why didn’t they just kill Bond then and there? And seeing Bond was half awake in bed anyway, wouldn’t he hear someone coming in the room.
3. Propose a viable solution to make the illogical thing logical, without sacrificing any entertainment value, or requiring the whole script to be thrown out the window.
A viable solution would be to put in a scene of Dent entering the house quietly with the spider in hand and approaching the sleeping Bond, then placing the spider on Bond’s skin before creeping out again. This would add extra tension for Bond and Dent and would increase the climax for them both, as well giving explanation to how the spider got there. Earlier, Dr No could tell Dent to kill Bond without making it look like murder which would explain why the spider was chosen.
Character Building Blocks Pt. 2
PPropose a FLAWED BELIEF they might have that stems from the WOUND: “If I just do this then I’ll never be wounded again.”
Both the main characters try to get round the grieving process in their own ways. Wesley’s flawed belief is that if he is able to continue distracting himself then he will get to bypass his grieving over his mum. This flaw soon becomes apparent as he realizes that he is not able to escape the grieving process and that he needs to face it in order to move on.
Propose an IRRATIONAL FEAR for the Protagonist: “If I just avoid doing that then I’ll never be wounded again.”
Wesley has developed an irrational fear of hospitals, stemming from the time he spent in one whilst his mother was dying. He believes that avoiding them will help him avoid emotional triggers of his mums death as well as other pain in the future.
Propose a potential DEEPLY HELD LONGING – the thing the character needs in order to be a better person and lead a better life. It heals the Wound, destroys the Flawed Belief, and exposes the Irrational Fear.
Wesley’s deep longing is come to terms with the death of his mum and to be able to accept it and move on without living in constant pain. In order to achieve this however he needs to face grief head on.
Which of the Three Classic Ways to Create Empathy might be utilised in creating your protagonist?
Sympathy - Wesley comes across and a shy but kind little boy who is undeserving of the loss of his mother and the subsequent pain involved. This pain is what audiences empathize with as Wesley is a good kid who we want to see go back and enjoy his life again.
Which of Five Additional Ways to Strengthen Empathy might be drawn upon in creating your protagonist?
Acting as the eyes of the audience
Placed in a familiar setting (childhood, his bond with his dad)
Part 2: Thematic statement
Thematic idea: Grief
Transformative idea: Trying to avoid the grieving process
Manifestation or result: Only prolongs the grief
Thematic Statement: Attempting to avoid the grieving process only prolongs the grief.
Character
Name: Wesley
Age: 10
Appearance:
· Dark, scruffy hair
· White skin
· Slightly small and scrawny for his age
· Big wide eyes
Dis/abilities
· Unable to quite grasp the concept of death and loss at his age
Intellegence
· Intellegent for his age but struggles to deal with large and worldly concepts
Friends
· Has some close friends at school but is overall not deemed that popular. Sometimes gets quite isolated by his friends. Is bullied occasionally.
Emotional Make Up
· Is very compassionate and loving towards his father despite the pain he is in. Has been raised to be a good kid. Kind and genorous in nature, but is only a kid at the end of the day.
Home Life
· Lives at home with his dad. Was an only child and after the mothers passing it is just the two of them left.
· Is very close to his dad who helps him through his grieving process, seemingly misses the mother more than the father does.
· They live in the country together on a farm.
What is his goal/want
· To get over the grieving he suffers for his mother
What classic goal/want does it fit into?
· To stop - He wants to stop going through the aweful pain and grief he suffers all the time
What is the Protagonist’s Wound and is it drawn from any of the Classic types?
· His wound is the death of his mother a month beforehand. His family was very tightknit and emotionally close and he is at a stage of the grieving process where he is suffering the most. He struggles with loss and death as a whole, and is still new to learning the whole concept and grieving process.
· He is also teased at school by a friend turned bully which interferes with the grieving process and leads to his isolation.
The classic wound is loss/tragedy as he is plagued by the emotion attached to the death of his mother.

Original Idea:
A dark hooded man arrives on a night bus outside a suburban house. Inside, a man watching tv gets up to inspect his power box after the power is turned off. He finds the lock to the power box cut open with bolt cutters and all the switches turned off. He turns them back on and goes inside to call the police. He then goes outside to inspect for the culprit with a cricket bat, and upon returning inside finds his phone missing. Knowing the intruder is inside he checks every room with the bat as a weapon but finds no one. As he waits for police, the intruders shadow gets out from under the bed and creeps up on the man. Outside a police car pulls up and an officer gets out. After no answer at the door he enters through the back and finds the mans body stabbed to death on the floor. He runs outside to look away but can’t find the culprit, in the distance a bus drives away into the night.
Different location:
A man lives alone in a villa on his island in Central America. He is watching television on a large screen when the power cuts out. He checks his outlets but finds nothing so he jumps on the roof where the finds the cords from his solar panels manually cunt. He runs back inside and grabs a gun where he goes outside and stalks the small island for the intruder. He finds a small, empty boat pulled up on the far shore and keeps hunting. He goes back inside and hunts through the house but after finding nothing he calls for help on a satellite phone. When he hangs up, he sits on the side of the bed and waits for help. Behind him the closet opens and a man illuminated by the reflection of the water slowly approaches him. Later, a police boat pulls up and sure and two policemen approach the house. On the other shore the boat is gone.
The version of Celtx I have makes it hard to format stuff correctly but oh well
My piece for withholding information from a character/audience, had problems uploading it. It is called ‘Pain’.
Didnt want to flesh it out into two pages because I felt it strained on the story. Sorry for the terrible formatting and dark themes. :/
Enjoy some of the worst art skills imaginable.
Alison is a retired music teacher who spends her retirement living with her husband of 60 years, collecting stamps and feeding the birds on her front porch. Despite Alison beginning to develop Alzheimer’s, she and her husband still enjoy and relish their time together by taking slow walks along the cliffs during sunset to reflect on the life they’ve shared. Her youth lives on through her grandchildren, whom she has 3. She teaches them how to play the piano every Wednesday so that her love for music will live on. When asked if she had her time again, what would she do differently, she always states that she ‘wouldn’t change a thing.’
