i actually ship wincest (well, i did a few seasons back… when i still cared) but i’ve always seen their canon relationship as unhealthy and really wanted them to progress to a place where they can overcome their codependency and care for each other not bc they feel they have to, but bc they want to. i hate when people romanticize the codependence and it seems that lots of people think the word’s synonymous with “loving someone lots and lots!!”. (it’s not.)

(i have no idea if this is your meta or what, if not then sorry, random wincest shipper who i’m criticizing just bc of an anon)

the soulmates one:

using plato’s symposium as an argument for soulmates is always terribad bc plato said that shit as a joke, he didn’t mean it (i’m srs, look it up). dark side of the moon is up for interpretation, like it or not. bc their happiest memories were different (sam’s didn’t have dean in them) and we dont know whether these really are their happiest memories or whether they would be different without zachariah’s manipulations. also ash isnt some all-knowing figure, he was just guessing bc they didnt know why they were there and didnt know about zachariah wanting dean to see those memories and get hurt by them and blah blah blah, it’s just very mixed up. so if you want to accept the soulmates interpretation it’s up to you. i’m ambivalent. personally i’m more interested in their actual relationship when they’re alive and let’s face it most of the time both of them are miserable and they treat each other badly bc they’re codependent and are victims of horrible trauma starting with child abuse, none of which is dealt with properly. the rest of that meta seems to be proof that they love each other which, duh.

the one about dean putting sam first being an essential part of dean:

this one is kind of upsetting. bc being so self-effacing and putting sam before everything is a product of dean’s abusive childhood. it’s not something in his dna! there was a time when the show didnt actually romanticize this and it was great. see: dean’s first arc where he sells his soul so sam would live, starting a long chain of terrible events including dean going to hell. this was not portrayed as a healthy thing, bobby and sam knew how screwed up it was and knew it was bc dean thinks of himself as a nothing if he hasn’t got sam to take care of. they knew this was bc of dean and sam’s horrible upbringing. that is not healthy love, that is sad and miserable.

so… i’m not sure what you’re trying to convince me of here, since i get that sam and dean’s relationship is important to the show. but unfortunately the show started to romanticize the codependency along with the fans and then started getting really repetitive and boring with it, so much so that i’m passed being pissed off and well into the “no longer care” territory. and speaking of the fans (this will probably include you, anon), romanticizing abuse isn’t ok.

also loads of y’all are terrible at character analysis.
