Disability pride

So, i learned that there is a disability pride month in july...

Alastor isn't happyto be called disabled, but forgive him, he's old. During his time being disabled wasn't good, and he thinks that disability = being helpless and pathetic

Anyway, happy disability pride! As you know, i persoally have ADHD, and i love me some ADHD Alastor headcanons (Charlie is 1000% has ADHD don't even try to argue with me LOL)

In this instalment of my Disability Pride series, we're looking at kitchen supplies for people with limited hand function and limb difference. There's tons of useful tools that allow people to prepare food with only one hand! Or with chronic pain, impeded strength etc.

Using knives with the handle at a right angle allows you to put less strain on your wrist while cutting food. This is very important for people with chronic pain, muscle issues or who use one hand and are therefore more prone to strain injuries.

Knorks are very useful, too! A fork that doubles as a knife, there is no need to use two hands to eat. Especially when combined with special plates: the one depicted here has a sloped bottom that makes it easier to scoop up food without spilling, and the knobs can hold food in place so that it doesn't roll away when you try to scoop or cut it.

Something similar exists on cutting boards. Knobs or spikes hold ingredients in place and some have elastic bands or cords attached that can hold food down, too. There are cutting boards with more features as well, such as holders for graters and the likes, all of which makes food preparation more accessible!

Finally there are pan stabilisers. These can be fixed to a countertop or stove and will help keep pans in place so that they won't shift when you stir in them.

There's plenty of other tools that can be used in the kitchen and at the dining table. Limb difference or other disabilities don't need to keep a person from eating or cooking independently!

Next up will be either a section on mental health or on prosthetics!

And here we are with part 3 of my Disability Pride Month special! A little later and a little less elaborate than I'd wanted to make it, but my own disabilities decided to join in the party and my ability to draw (or write, or game, or pursue any of my hobbies) is a tad limited right now, so this is it! (And I'll just extend this project past July if need be, Disability Pride forever)

But here's another neat little tool! Magnets for shoelaces. Putting on shoes (with laces) one-handedly is tough, but Charlie researched a bunch of solutions for Alastor to help him adapt and maintain his independence after losing his left hand. This was one of the first things she gave him, tying them to his shoes under his nose, much to his chagrin. He grew to appreciate them rather quickly, though!

I think next time we're moving on to kitchen aids for people with one hand or reduced hand function :)

Continuing my series for Disability Pride Month, here's a demonstration of a useful disability aid for people with limb difference or limited hand function: the button hook.

The button hook has an ergonomic shape for easy gripping, a wire loop on one end and (sometimes) a small wire hook on the other side. The loop can be used to fasten buttons one-handedly or if injuries or chronic pain limit movement in your hands. The hook can be used to pull zippers.

Next part will be another useful tool used for dressing oneself!

Disability Pride Month - Part 1

Hazbin Hotel Horror Vacui AU by SolCaeruleus

In honour of Disability Pride Month, I'll be making art relating to my Hazbin Hotel fic, Horror Vacui.

In the fic, Alastor loses his arm after sustaining severe injuries from being stuck between Shock.Wav's jaws in the season 2 finale. Horror Vacui explores his journey after his amputation, healing and learning to adapt to his injury.

I have done a lot of research to write this topic in a respectful, realistic manner. This is not to claim that my depiction of Alastor's disability is flawless, nor does it accurately reflect the experiences of every amputee. Everyone is different and everyone deals with these things in their own ways. I am trying my best, but I am not infallible as a storyteller.

This month, I'll use Horror Vacui and Alastor to share the information I've learnt over the course of writing, and to highlight some useful disability aids. There will also be instalments related to mental health down the line. I hope you'll find this collection informative!

In Horror Vacui, Alastor's left arm was badly injured when he was bit by Shock.Wav and subsequently pulled out of the shark's jaws by Emily. This resulted in his arm being amputated by Baxter after the fight. With his left arm amputated below the elbow, this makes him a unilateral, transradial amputee (amputation on one side across the radius = below elbow)

The force with which he was dragged free of Shock.Wav's jaw also left Alastor's shoulder badly wrenched: partial tears in the teres minor and subscapularis muscles. This required him to wear a shoulder brace for a number of weeks, severely limiting his movement in the first weeks after sustaining his injuries.

And - yes, this is a whole ass AU, where Alastor and Vox have healthy PLATONIC relationships and don't hate each other, and Vox accepts that Alastor is aroace, and Vox doesn't have instant boner when Alastor does something cute or hot wether on accident or not, and tootally nothing traumatic happened in the past. Absolutely.

I hc that Vaggi can read Alastor way better than she shows it. Of course not perfectly, but she understands his need to be seen strong and his hatred to being pitied, and refusal to accept help, because she was like that, but she learned to be more open and that it's ok to rely on other people.

And she cares about him. In her own way. She would be upset if he died, she now finds out that seeing him very obviously in pain is harder than she thought it could be.

And now she can relate to him even more, and she wants to help him and ease the struggle she's familiar with on a personal level.

Anyway i need more Vaggi and Alastor interactions, PLEASE. not like in a ship whay, but like coworkers/friends stuff.
