Yoshio Markino
The Colour of London, Historic, Personal, & Local. By William J Loftie & Yoshio Markino (1910)
“ London in mist is far above my own ideal … Whether it is unhealthy or not, is not the question for me. The colour and its effect are most wonderful. I think London without mists would be like a bride without a trousseau .. The London mist attracts me so that I do not feel I could live in any other place but London. “

Absences répétées (Guy Gilles, 1972)
what is your favorite kind of ice cream? I like oreo ice cream sandwiches or pistachio scoop with the waffle cone.
if people could read your mind, what would they usually find? Probably my panic at running late for something, or thinking about my feelings, or hopes for the future. And occasionally appreciating a nice looking tree or talking to the crows.
who do you talk to on the phone most often? My boyfriend and my parents.
what's a song that makes you feel happy? Idles - I’m scum.
what celebrity would you like to meet? Honestly it would be great to meet a billionaire like Elon Musk and assassinate him.
what's the best concert you've ever been to? I haven’t been to too many. Probably Morrissey although the dudes a cunt.
what is your favorite clothing store? I try not to shop anymore, usually buy second-hand or clothes swap with my friends. But I like Anthopologie’s designs.
how did you meet your best friend? I know this is cheesy but my best friend is my sister.
do you need money to be happy? I think it brings a level of comfort that eases general anxieties and worries, but it won’t make you happy in and of itself. It only brings you temporary satisfaction to take part in capitalism.
what is something you do well? I think I’m good at making conversation with strangers.
what's a good idea you've had recently? To run until the the national hills, it’s a beautiful spot and it helps me prepare for my half marathon.
what is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast? Toast and avocado with lemon, poached eggs and chilli oil drizzled on top.
how far in advance do you prefer to plan? I hate planning things too far in advance, it doesn’t really allow me to do things intuitively. How will I know how I’m feeling on the day? So only a week or two in advance tops. I detest having to plan and figure out logistics. I always want to do too much.
do you like to wear high heels? I can’t wear them, they destroy my feet and I hate feeling uncomfortable on nights out.
how many slices of pizza do you usually eat? At least 5, usually more.
Can you remember life without technology? what was it like? I remember being a child and coming up with a lot of imaginary games but the memories are so fuzzy, in high school I became attached to the internet and it all went downhill from there.
what gift would you like to receive? A fitbit so I can keep time in my classes better.
what's the last movie you watched? The Black Phone.
do you remember your dreams? Not anymore. I find that you have to train your brain to remember your dreams, lay in bed and think about them or write them down. But I haven’t done so in a while so I’m out of practice.
do you play any instruments? Unless you count me thrumming your mum, no.
do you always smile for pictures? Nope, sometimes I will pull a serious face if I’m trying to pose. Trying being the operative word.
what are you most excited about right now? Half term break, I can’t WAIT to have a week off school.
if you had $5 in your pocket what would you spend it on? That doesn’t get you very far these days. I suppose a moisturizer or a hair mask.
how often do you buy things via the internet? Not very often, I want things but I never get round to buying them.
would you like to live in a different country? if so which one? Oh 100%. I would like to live in Nicaragua or Costa Rica.
what animal would you see first if you went to the zoo? The elephants or apes.
if you could switch places with someone for a day, who would it be? Lizz Truss, I’d destroy the Tories from the inside.

what's your favorite song from a movie?
where would you like to volunteer? At a refugee camp in northern Greece or at turtle nesting sites on some Greek island.

Katsushika Hokusai, Woodblock Prints from Hyaku Monogatari [One Hundred Ghost Stories], ca. 1830
Hokusai only completed 5 plates for this, which presumably would have been 100.
The Ghosts are~
The Mansion of the Plates (Sara-yashiki)
After the maid Okiku had accidentally broken one of a set of elegant Korean plates, her infuriated master bound her and threw her down a well, where she died in body but not spirit. In 1795, wells around Japan became infested with a species of worm covered in thin threads, which people believed to be a reincarnation of Okiku; the threads being the remnants of the fabric used to bind her. They named it “Okiku mushi” [the Okiku bug].
Obsession (Shûnen)
The snake here represents obsessive jealousy, an emotion thought to transcend death, and wraps itself around a Buddhist memorial tablet (traditionally placed on an altar at the home of the deceased). The bowl of water decorated with the swastika appears to be a good luck offering: though tainted by its association with National Socialism, the swastika has been an auspicious symbol for thousands of years in cultures from the Ukraine to the Aztec Empire.
Kohada Koheiji
Based on a real event, the cuckold and murder victim Kohada Koheiji returns from the dead to torment his cheating wife and lover. Here he grins over the top of the mosquito netting that surrounds the bed of his killers.
The Laughing Hannya (Warai-hannya)
This gleeful cannibal is an unholy union of two other monsters: a “hannya”, whose jealousy has turned her into a horned demon; and a “yamanba”, who dwells in the mountains living off the meat of kidnapped children.
Oiwa (Oiwa-san)
The young Oume falls in love with the married samurai Tamiya Iemon, and her friends try to get his wife Oiwa out of the picture with a gift of poisonous face cream. When Iemon abandons his newly disfigured wife, it sends her mad with grief. In her hysteria she runs and trips onto a sword, cursing Iemon with her dying breath — and then adopting various forms to haunt him, including a paper lantern.
