Commercialization of video games
commercialization of the video game industry is bringing the creativity backwards in the last 10 years. Along with the development of graphic technology, video games have entered a golden century, the evolution of the video game graphics becomes a common thing for us, every year the new technologies have been developed and used in the video games. The technology comes with a high cost, to pay off the cost of developing such expensive video games, commercialization seems to become the only option for the creators of video games. I am not saying the commercialization is bad, but it is limiting the creativity of the people who develops the video game, the inspiration no longer comes from the ideas of the creators but comes from the study of the market. The product of commercialized video games is just like popcorn movies in the film industry. But unlike the film industry, the video game industry, the the video games are not a mature industry. It does not have a series of historical and cultural accumulations like the film industry. It is difficult for people to judge video games based on past experiences and cultural accumulation, this fact further indulges the commercialization process of the game industry. Sometimes the advancement of technology and hardware does not bring innovation to the electronic game itself. Over-reliance on technological advancement makes the development of electronic games limited. Whenever you try to find a fun game, you can always find many alternatives similar to it. Everyone seems to be plagiarizing each other. After all, as long as you can make money, who is willing to take the risks brought by innovation? What is gratifying is that in this status quo, there are still many independent game makers who are concerned about game innovation and making niche independent games, but such efforts cannot bring direct changes to the entire industry. It may be able to influence the focus of the industry but it cannot change the values of the entire industry. In my opinion, if we want to change the status quo, we need more cultural accumulation and recognition of the artistic value of video games.
