Tom Hopper as LUTHER HARGREEVES in THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY, 1x02 "Run Boy Run"

“I mean, dying twice is kinda impressive, innit?” Lila starts peeling the label off of her beer as she speaks, “Can’t say I know many people who’ve done that.”
She pauses, “Well. I suppose my mum technically did die twice. Hopefully it sticks this time.”
She holds a hand out for the whisky bottle and looks at him imploringly; she’s going to need something much stronger to get through the rest of the day. Once he hands her the bottle, she tips it back and takes a drink from it that honestly lasts a little too long.
Lila gasps a little bit when she finally comes up for air.
“Now that’s the good stuff.” She says, wiping the back of her hand over her mouth.
“So, uh.” She levels him with a look, “How are you… feeling about all this?”
He was about to protest before he figured that they could all use a drink at this time. That didn’t stop him from reaching to take the bottle back from her after the generous amount she had helped herself to. Before responding he’s going to wipe the top of the bottle off with his sleeve and take his own long swig. The only plus side of being as large as he was now was being able to consume a lot of alcohol before actually feeling too drunk.
“ Yeah...definitely up there on the list of weird things that have happened lately, but I guess when you’ve already seen the world nearly end more than once it’s hard to find anything so strange anymore. ” He didn’t want to admit just how strange it was for him. Lila wasn’t exactly a trusted family member. In fact she had tried to kill most of his family at this point. Luther still needed more to break those boundaries with her.
“All in all ? I don’t know what to think. This guy that died wasn’t even the guy I knew...except he was...& he still wasn’t. --- Actually I’m just really confused & that’s not the booze talking. ”

“Ah, the Umbrellas.” Quinn held back an amused snort. She supposed the name of her academy wasn’t really better, but she wasn’t sure how something named the Umbrella Academy could strike fear in the hearts of evildoers.
She approached him and shook his hand, “Quinn. Number seven.”
She took a step back and crossed her arms over her chest, taking a moment to really get a good look at him. She let out a low, impressed whistle.
“I hope you don’t mind me saying, but you are impressively large, man.” She grinned up at him, “Vat is your ability? Is it strength-related? I bet it is.”
He raised a brow feeling a little confused. Had she already learned more about the group that he had grown up with. Even if she knew the names of the academies she was already a bit ahead of Luther. Sure, they had briefly heard about these earlier but they had already fallen to the back of his mind into a sea of confusion.
Luther chuckled a bit about her observation of his ability but tried not to show any sign of offense on his features. Not everyone knew that he was technically part monkey now....nor did he plan on sharing it. At least not the gory details of how it happened. “Number one.” He gave her hand a not too strong squeeze but enough to show his strength was correctly assumed. “It is strength...but I didn’t really always look this way. It’s a long story.”

Luther wasn’t entirely sure when it happened, but at some point in time he started to feel the ease of not always feeling responsible for the actions of his siblings. For making sure they kept themselves in line. Perhaps all their recent world-saving had effected him far more than he realized. Even so -- he wanted to check in with his family to try to figure out how they could pull through. He was tired of it just as he was sure the others were but sitting idle wasn’t really behavior he understood.
If anyone would be able to have a better idea of what was going on it was Five. He always seemed to have a grasp on what was happening far beyond anything that Luther’s mind could come up with. His forte had always been strength and power, but science was difficult for his own mental capacity to understand.
When he finally found his brother, he moved across the room to meet him. “ Five ! ” He called along the way over. “ Please tell me you know how the hell we got here.” And not back home where they expected to be after leaving the past and Dallas.

“Cheers, I’ll drink to that,” Lila mutters, knocking back another swig of beer. She eyes the bottle of whisky in his hands and smirks, “A whole bottle, huh? I like your style.”
She’s not interacted with Luther all that much, other than the time she threw him through a wall. She hopes he’s not one to hold grudges.
“Your dad always doing crazy shit like this?” She’s referring to the letter, to the whole situation they’ve found themselves in. She flags the bartender over and orders another drink, snorts as she says: “And I thought my mum was bonkers.”
Of course Lila wasn’t on top of Luther’s list of favorite people. She wasn’t on it at all. Not yet, at the very least. He didn’t mind that she seemed to make Diego happier when the pair weren’t bickering over something. On the other hand she was one of the few people he knew here outside of his family so she was as good of a drinking buddy as any.
Upon her question he gives her a side-glance of a look. “ Do you mean dying ? Because he’s already done that once already...so I would say this is not something he usually does. ”
He opens the bottle and takes a long swig out of it to add emphasis onto how crazy he himself felt the situation was at the moment. It was strange that Luther didn’t feel anything now except an ounce of anger. He had already mourned his father once and accepted that he was gone. This time it left him feeling strangely empty and endlessly confused.
Better not to think too much about it.
hello-as-goodbye:
+
There was a quiet around them that they didn’t feel comfortable with. They had complained about Ben, and at Ben for years, mainly about issues privacy and personal space, sprinkled with a little ‘you’re not my keeper, shut up’ here and there, but since he had disappeared, Klaus had never felt more alone.
Klaus sat cross legged on the end of the first free bed in the first free room they had found. Hotel Obsidian had been a place in which they had spent many a drunken night before, but everything felt off. They held Dave’s dog tags out on the palm of their hand, allowing waves of regret and sadness to pour over them, until the door opened.
Looking up at Luther, Klaus plastered wide smile on their face and slipped the dog tags away. “It’s cool man, you want to pull up a pillow?” they asked, reaching behind and dragging a pillow forward for emphasis. “These are super comfy, I guarantee it! Though I guess I can’t… guarantee it anymore, but hey! Get in here”.
Luther was actually glad that it was Klaus in the room. His siblings were really the only people who understood what they were going through right now, no matter how dysfunctional their family could be at times. Was there yet another apocalypse brewing? Klaus could irritate him now and then but Luther still cared an incredible amount for them.
Following the lead of the other he plops his weight down on the pillow that sinks immediately to the floor. Somehow it’s still relatively comfortable. The door had been closed by him when he entered the room so now they had a bit of privacy to talk between the two of them.
“ How are you feeling about ---” he gestures his arm around at the room but is referring to the situation they were in. “ --- all this ?”

It was the big one, the one with the frankly very impressive biceps. She wondered if his ability was strength related, or if it was something completely contradictory to his appearance, something unexpected.
“It is fine,” she assured him. “I am happy to find another room if you have your heart set on this one. Not particularly attached to it or anything.”
She regarded him curiously, “Vich academy are you from, again?”
His frame was taking up the entrance of the doorway. Enough so that he had to slightly turn sideways to step in a bit more. Of course she hadn’t exactly invited him in. Luther was still trying to gather exactly what was going on. He both did and didn’t want to think too hard about the fact that there were people from separate timelines here. Or so he was being told.
“Right...there’s more than one academy.” He wonders if this girl led a similar life to his own family. Ranked in sequential order of how their own Reginald seemed fit. “Umbrella academy. Also you can keep it -- the room, I mean.”
“I’m Luther, by the way.” He offered out a hand to the girl. Might as well make the best of the situation as he could.
You’re being enabled by your own father. Yeah, but I really think if you just give him a little chance–
Quinn hovered in the doorway of the room she was going to be calling hers for the next indeterminate amount of time. The decor was reminiscent of an old motel, all muted tones and way too many patterns that were offensive to the eye. It was a stark contrast to the clean lines and minimalism she’d grown up with.
She walked over to the bed and sat down on it, testing the mattress. The bedsprings squeaked in protest as she bounced on it.
“Vell, this should be fun.” She sighed. She got back up to retrieve her bag from the floor and start unpacking. As she did so, something caught her eye in the corner of her vision - and she glanced up to see someone standing in the doorway.
“Can I help you?”
He was wandering the halls trying to decide which room he wanted to take. Overall Luther wasn’t particularly thrilled that they weren’t even allowed to stay in their own home....though from what he gathered it wasn’t his home anymore. Except that in a way he still felt they had a right to the Hargreeves home. As he goes to open the door he sees someone is already sitting inside.·“Oh -- uh, sorry. I thought that no one would be in here.” So far the other rooms he had checked were all empty.
LILA· .
where: the bar of the Hotel Obsidian who: Lila and open!
The hotel smelled like mothballs and old carpet.
Lila wrinkled her nose as she took another swig of her lukewarm beer. This place felt disjointed, outside of time, a liminal space.
She was kind of obsessed with it, already.
Someone sidled up to the bar and took a seat next to her. She barely acknowledged them, just reached forward to grab the bowl of bar peanuts.
“The beer here tastes like shit.” She warned them, throwing a nut up in the air and catching it with her mouth.
Heeding the warning Luther decides to go for something stronger instead. After all the nonsense of what was going on he felt like he needed something to drink. Beer was good but due to his size it rarely got him very drunk unless he binged them. So instead he receives whiskey -- but a whole bottle of it.
“ At least there is beer, I guess.” Even he could only remain so optimistic, though.
