Second page of comic. Three panels are shown, the top one shows Robinās legs, Jace and a third character, another small vessel with curved horns going inward and two smaller curled horns on the sides of the head named Lance, all standing in the Forgotten Crossroads. Jace is standing behind Robinās legs, agitated towards Lance, who is crying and wearing a torn cloak. Two panels are shown, the top one showing Jace sitting on a plush round chair while reading from a tablet, two silhouettes of a spider and a mantis in view in the foreground, body language indicating the two are chatting. The bottom panel shows Jace flinching, reacting to what was in the panel. The text reads āHe looks so adorable!ā, with heavy emphasis on the word āheā
Fourth page of comic. Six panels are shown, the first one showing Jace staring ahead towards the viewer, lost in thought while the conversation continues. The text reads from left to right, the first speech bubble reads āNo, no, they please!ā and the second speech bubble reads, āOh, sorry!ā The second and third panels show Jace looking away and then looking forward again, the conversation fading from view as Jace starts to think on what was said. The color of the panels slowly become purple, crosshatched lines creeping in from behind. The fourth panel shows Jace simply sitting in thought, before the fifth panel now shows Jace speaking a single āHe,ā the background lighting up just a bit from the act. The last panel now shows Jace smiling with his eyes, completely delighted at the single word and discovering how it made him feel, the background showing bright blue color breaking past the purple. Sparkles are around him to further demonstrate his gender euphoria.
Fifth page of comic. Five panels are shown, the first panel showing Jace in bed wrapped in his blanket with a frustrated squint on his face. The second panel shows him turned over, the blanket being brought up to his face, the agitation becoming obvious. The third panel shows the blanket pulled over his head completely now. The fourth panel shows Jace now peeking out of the blanket, which is still pulled over his head but now showing a bi of his face. The fifth panel is a close-up on the part of his face peeking out, his expression showing a more worried look. Dark blue is overlayed over the page to show it is night-time.
Sixth page of comic. Three panels are shown, with three smaller pieces of panels on the top left, from left to right being becoming lighter in color and smaller in size to represent time passing between the last page and this one. The big panel shows Robin, who is smiling and holding their weapon, checking it over. The top panel in the bottom right shows a small hand pulling on a bit of Robinās cloak, the bottom panel underneath that one showing Robinās eye, the gesture having caught their attention.
Seventh page of comic. Six panels are shown, the firth panel showing Robin ās head, turning to look behind them. The text reads āJace?ā The second panel shows that it was indeed Jace who tugged on their cloak, the child looking up at Robin with concerned, sad eyes. The third, fourth and fifth panels are of Jace standing there and struggling with his words, first looking up at Robin, then looking downwards with their arms crossed, then their head raised a bit but still looking away, slightly down towards the floor. The background in the three panels slowly become more purple, the crosshatched lines creeping in from behind again. The last panel shows Robin kneeling down now in front of Jace with curiosity, who is curling forward with his hands together and looking even more apprehensive. Dark purple is faded in behind him, some of that purple color overlaying a bit over him now. The text reads, āWhat is it, Jace?ā
Eighth page of comic. Three panels are shown. The first panel shows Jace looking downward, scared. The color purple is becoming more prominent. The speech bubbles on the left are just two bubbles with three dots, showing the pause. Then the text on the right reads āIā¦like what I am. I like who I a. Butā¦it doesnāt feel right.ā The second panel shows Robin instead, who is kneeling still and looking towards the viewer, towards Jace, as he continues to speak. The text on the left reads, āI hear others get called āheā but I donāt get called that, andā¦ā and the text on the right continues, reading, āAnd itāit hurts, I donāt know, itā I justā¦ā The third panel shows Jace again, who is now leaning forward with his face hiding behind his hands, looking more scared. The color purple is now much more obvious, the crosshatched lines circling behind him in the background. The text on the left reads āI want to be called that. It feels a lot better.ā The text on the right continues, reading, āMom, I'māIām sorryā¦Please donāt be mad at meā¦ā
Ninth page of comic. Two panels are shown, the first panel on the top showing Jace, who has his hands moved away from his face now, while Robinās larger hands are on his sides in the middle of grabbing him. Purple colors still surround him but there is a faint light over him. The larger second panel shows Robin now hugging Jace, smiling with their eyes closed and keeping him close to their chest. Jace has no expression, but is letting himself be held. The color blue is now covering the background, a very bright blue coming from the center behind both Robin and Jace.
Tenth page of comic. Four panels are shown, the first panel showing Robin still hugging Jace, who is slightly out of frame. They are smiling with their eyes closed still. The text in the panel reads, āYouāll always be my child, so Iāll love you no matter what, Jace.ā The second panel focuses more on Jaceās face, which is still expressionless, the speech bubbles hiding a bit of Robin but you can see them smiling still. The top text in the panel reads. āIāll start using those pronouns for you, okay?ā and the bottom text in the panel reads, āWe can do this however you want.ā The third panel is solely focused on Jaceās face, who is now seen with tears in his eyes, but not at all sad. He feels overjoyed, faint sparkles and bubbles overlaying the panel to indicate the relief he feels. The last panel shows Jace now burying his face into Robinās chest, hugging his parent back. Robinās eyes are open now and peeking down at him, the dragonfly smiling softly. The color blue has overtaken the background, a softer shade now.Ā
AU details: The characters featured are my OCs. Robin is a blue dragonfly who was a royal guard in the white palace before being exiled and the pure vessel was sealed away. They now live with their partner,who runs a fabric/cloak shop, and helps take care of their two children. They love and adore their family very much. Jace is a small hybrid vessel, who is the son of The Hollow Knight and Robin. Heās determined and a little too ready for danger sometimes, but ultimately wants to prove his worth and is sometimes worried over what his parents think of him. Lance is a vessel who escaped from the Abyss and was found by Robin and Jace, being taken in to be cared for and eventually becoming a member of the family. The comic focuses on Jace as he discovers fairly early on in his life how he much prefers having a gendered identity compared to the genderless one he was born with, an accidental discovery from a customerās well-meaning comment when he was sitting in his parentās fabric shop.
How this relates to gender identity is because sometimes we donāt realize whatās wrong gender-wise until some sort of accidental discovery is made. Some are lucky to already figure things out and just need to find the right word/term for it, but some just donāt realize they honestly feel wrong about their gender until something comes their way that gives them pause, then realization. This can come early, like Jace, or it can come much later on, and itās valid either way!
