Replacing sky and background. I LOVE doing this, lets my “limited” amount of creativity take control for a moment and I get to have a play around. I enjoy finding out what works really well, and what doesnt quite cut the mustard. Really like these two photos though!
Landscape and Architechture snippets. I really enjoy this side of photography, simple yet slightly challenging to get “the” shot.
Product photography
One of my best images from some of the products I tried to photograph, with different backgrounds and what not. I found it a bit difficult as I only had blank sheets of paper and the available daylight for me but overall was a good learning and experimenting experience for me!
“Inside and Outside” For these images I actually used the Bracketing technique as I was having trouble with lighting and shadows so thought I would try kill two birds with one stone and I am really happy with the results. I couldn’t figure out how to turn on automatic bracketing on my camera so I just adjusted the shutter speed for each image. The inside image was taken in full M mode, ISO 100, 20mm, f3.5 and SS of 1/20, 1/6 and 1/2. The exterior was also full M, ISO 100, 18mm, f8 and SS of 1/100, 1/50, 1/20.
The image I tried to replicate was one of Lee Jeffries from his homeless series, Lost Angels, I like the tone of the image and especially how it is in black and white. I also like the cheeky look of the subject like he knows something he shouldn’t and the feeling of intrigue I get when I look at the image. I also like the intensity of his eyes and I feel as though he is looking right into my soul. I feel like I am seeing a snippet of this mans personality in this image.
In my image I tried to get the same colouring as Lee has. But I think what I achieved most in was capturing my uncles being. Although he isn’t homeless like the man in Lee’s image, I feel I have captured him well. I like the intensity of his gaze, and his slight smirk on his lips that also give me a cheeky feel. If I didn’t know my subject, I too would be intrigued to learn what this mans story is. His chest tattoos and pounamu necklace, I feel add more wonder to the image, and him as a person, not just a subject in a photograph.
These are a couple of my favourite shots taken with the light painting technique. Here I used steel wool in a steel whisk and twirled it around to create these cool effects! The options with light painting are endless but I think steel wool photography is quick becoming a favourite. I like the effects you can create and how the sparks bounce off the environment. I did this under a bridge beside water and we did have a fire extinguisher on hand, just to be safe! On both images I did enhance the exposure, clarity and vibrance just so I could better see the bridge and the other surroundings. This is a really fun form of photography and I can’t wait to get out and do some more! I would reccomend taking another person with you to help out though :)
These were taken on S mode with a shutter of 25 seconds at f/20 and an ISO 200.
Probably not the best example, but I quite liked these images of our pet possum laying on my brothers arm! The top image was taken with no flash, and the bottom was taken with the in-camera flash set to “fill flash”, which brightened the possum up quite nicely.
Here I have retouched one of the images I took during the focal length exercise as I was interested in trying to “clear”my subjects skin up! I used a mix of clone stamp tool and the spot healing brush tool to remove some larger skin imperfections as well as some distracting blemishes in the background, such as chips in the paint etc. I also sharpened the image a tiny bit as well as adjust the tone curve to lighten the image more and lift some shadows.
I had another go at adding text and flattening the image too.
I haven’t yet quite got the hang of using layer masks but I am still practicing and am looking forward to being able to understand and use the concept properly.
I do enjoy using the clone stamp to remove unwanted things/people from an image though as well as fixing blemishes with the spot healing tool.
My attempt at adding text to an image and flattening layers. This was quite a cool wee experiment, I would love to be able to take more photos with more of difference in focal length and create something like Dan Vojtěch did in the GIF in the course content. I thought that was really cool as I hadn’t really taken into account how different focal lengths can change face shapes. As I am writing this I have realised I should have had my brothers face as the sole focus instead of his upper body to show how the focal lengths affect face shapes but I still think I did a good job and it is something I can try out later. I can see a difference in his nose I think between the three images.

This image was enhanced a lot in post, as it was really dark so I enhanced clarity and exposure to give the image more definition and brighten the image.
I am stoked with the outcome, I really like this image!!
This photo is from a photographer from New Zealand called Amos Chapple. I tried to describe why I like Amos’ work but couldn’t quite get the right words. I found a quote from journalist Jeremy Olds in a stuff.co.nz article about Amos, “What sets Chapple apart is he's willing to travel to places others won't venture – places too remote, or too dangerous. It means he's capturing scenes that often haven't been photographed before and are, by virtue of their unfamiliarity, intriguing.” Intriguing, different and beautiful. Those are the three words I would use to describe his work.
I chose this image of Amos’ to post as it is not only a beautiful shot of part of a river in the Yakutian Region in Far East Russia, but because there is a whole story that goes along with it and details of what happens in parts of this beautiful region that is captured in this image. “Tuskers”, men who come from all over and illegally ravage the land in the hopes of finding Woolly Mammoth tusks that have been preserved in the permafrost, and making a profitable amount if they are lucky enough to find tusks to sell.
Unfortunately the damage that tusk hunting is having on the landscape and waterways around this region is terrible and is only going to get worse as the demand for tusks grows, along with the prices people are willing to pay for the tusks and ultimately as more hunters arrive in the region.
The thing I admire about Amos and his photography is the fact that he endeavours on adventures that can potentially put him in danger but he is not only able to capture amazing photographs but a story to accompany them also.
One day, I too, would like to head to the lesser travelled regions of the world and capture images that aren’t as easily accessible as most!

These photos were taken at the Anatoki Salmon Farm in Takaka, NZ.
I really like the symmetry in both of these photos and they both give me a pleased almost relaxing feeling when I look at them, haha! I think it is because I can remember the sound of the water falling and the memories of the day as a whole are amazing.
I captured this image at the Ngarua Caves look out at the top of Takaka Hill.
I chose to upload this as my landscape shot as I really like the texture of the rocks and the trees and bushes scattered amongst them. I also like the colours in this shot.

Photoshop Adjustment Layers
The other day whilst at my aunty and uncles bach I went for a wander and came across this old decrepit house, turned woodshed. I really like the old and “weathered” look this place has and decided to capture some images.
I chose this image to upload as I like the little bicycle perched front and centre as if some child has left it there and seemingly never returned for it. I like the mystery of what has happened in the time of this building, and also a feeling of abandonment/spookiness I get when I look at this picture.
The original image in color was taken on my Nikon D5600 with an 18.0-55.0mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. I had it on A mode with an aperture f/5.0, a shutter speed of 1/100 and an ISO 400 with the lens focal length at 31.0mm
With the photoshop adjustment layers I adjusted the brightness and contrast to darken it up a bit and then added a black and white filter on it as I feel it gives the image a more “creepy” feel. I also used the curves adjustment after adding the black and white filter to enhance the shadows in the image a bit more.
I captured this image during a bush walk behind the Anatoki Salmon Farm in Takaka, New Zealand.
I particularly like that I was able to capture how the bridge gradually begins to “blur” out, due to the shallow depth of field? This image is interesting to me because it’s different but somewhat beautiful, and I like how the beginning of the bridge, the nail and moss are in focus but nothing else is. The colours also attract my eye to this image.

I took this picture of two stag skulls that are in my back yard. I like that they have a weathered look to them as they have been sitting out there for quite some time.
The contrast of the white/grey of the skulls against the black of the fence caught my eye as they seem to stand out. I also like the texture of the black wooden fence and also how the spider webs are visibly noticeable.
I chose to upload this picture as it is different to what I would usually take photos of, and I find it an interesting photo. In the future I would like to take more photos of inanimate objects such as these skulls.
