How to Focus on Outcome-Oriented Action
In Chiropractic philosophy, we know the 3 causes of subluxation are thoughts, traumas and toxins. As we get bombarded every day with unlimited tasks and daily stressors, our emotions tend to dictate our actions over logical thoughts and actions. Science has shown that with negative emotions and activation of the limbic system (the emotional center in the brain), we know there is a significant change in the body’s biochemistry and posture. This leads to poor health and reduces quality of life.
A big fan of Network Spinal Analysis is motivation and self-help expert Anthony Robbins. Instead of completing an unending and unfocused to-do list, his concept of RPM (Rapid Planning Method) helps to shift your focus from emotional tasks to outcome-oriented action.
Let’s say for example you’re feeling hungry. And you can choose to go to a drive thru at a fast food chain because it is fast, convenient, and satisfies a junk craving. But first … think!
Result. Think of the OUTCOME you want first. Is taking a specific action or step a distraction or helping you meet a certain goal? Instead of acting out of emotion: whether it is anger/fear/guilt, why not do something with the end result in mind? In our fast food example, perhaps you had set the goal to drop 5 lbs. or to eat healthier. If I remind myself my overall outcome is to feel great about myself or reach my weight loss goal, I’m less likely to give into the emotional action of giving into cravings.
Purpose. The WHY behind your goal. 80% of your success must come from the WHY. This is what will give you the fuel to take the right action, even when faced with obstacles. I chose to lose 5 lbs. because I feel sluggish from all of the inflammatory foods I’ve been eating during the summer break. I want to get back on track with healthy eating so I feel more energized and healthier.
MAP (MASSIVE ACTION PLAN). Take action! This is easy to follow through with- but only once you remind yourself of your OUTCOME and the WHY. If your goal is to eat healthy so you can be healthy, take the steps to get you there! Maybe even prepare your daily food so you’re not distracted or tempted to eat junk. Maybe bring an apple with you or, when in a pinch, choose a healthier option.
Thinking of the result first will determine which action you will take instead of letting your emotions guide you. It will keep you on track and focused and force you to re-evaluate where you place the most value. Even consider it with your entrainments! When arriving at the office, focus on the OUTCOME you want from the entrainment. Do you just want to get out of pain? Or maybe improve your posture? Reduce the stored tension in your body? Or experience the full health potential your body is capable of expressing and re-organizing your nervous system to function optimally?
Instead of coming in with a “I need to get fixed, I feel so stressed” state, hold the outcome you want in your mind, and watch what happens. You will mentally create the space for that to take place.
