Shape of Fear Installation with sculptures and short documentary movie
This research is about deepest emotions and how different cultures are dealing with them depending on their tradition and value systems. It is also experiment with material and shapes, water and liquid metal and how they are effecting each other.
It is about organic shapes and my years long research for shapes that are appearing everywhere, but mostly in my paintings.
It is about nostalgia, my hometown, my roots, and our mentality.
Fear is the archetype that divides and connects us, controls us and makes us lose control.
"Shape of fear" sculptures are inspired by an old Balkan custom of curing fear and trauma with melted lead and cold water, (a.k.a. salivanje strave). It is done by an old woman who knows how to see your fear through the shape of lead, and guides you through the process until your fears are zipped in a tiny piece of metal. You should keep it under your pillow for three nights, throw it down the river afterwards and free yourself from it.
The movie is an interview with an 92 year old women who was ''healing'' people while she was younger before she went to Hajj. Her experience, reasons and reflexions to our history, religion, differences and similarities in multicultural city in south of Serbia. Ritual is explained by her and it leaves space for discussion and seeing the phenomena from psychological, sociological and artistic point of view.
It talks about our history and position on Balkan during the years and especially of citizens in south of Serbia, and my memories, feelings, influences and pressures growing up in dominantly muslim environment.
It is inspired by my fear of losing myself and being far from everything that represented me. The inner need to understand, going back to the roots is always an answer.
