Happy New Year from the Newberry Library! If we were following the French Republican Calendar, we would already be several months into the year. The calendar was adopted during the French Revolution in October 1793. The date of 22 September 1792 was established as the beginning of Year I of the French Republic. It was constructed on a decimalized system of 10-day weeks with months named after seasonal weather and natural phenomena (like “nivôse” from the Latin nivosus, or “snowy”, for the month spanning December and January). The pamphlet above includes patriotic verses celebrating the calendar and the republic. The author, Michel de Cubières, styled himself here as the “Poet of the Revolution.”

How did one cope with divorce during the French Revolution? By attending a musical comedy about it, of course! This play by French playwright Desfontaines (1733-1825) was first presented in 1793, a year after divorce was first legalized in France. In this play, young Isabelle and the local priest fall in love, and Isabelle seeks to divorce her husband.
After acknowledging her feelings for the priest, Isabelle cheekily confides to the incredulous house servant Cécile, “Just until now I condemned divorce; today I find it charming, and I’m going to divorce.” Flippant as the comment may be, legal divorce was a newfound right which many women lobbied for during the French Revolution.

On 10 December 1792, the delegates of the newly formed National Convention heard the opening arguments in the trial against King Louis XVI. This significant event of the French Revolution ultimately resulted in the king’s execution by guillotine just over one month later and the establishment of democratic government in France. The Newberry’s Louis XVI Trial and Execution Collection contains more than 500 pamphlets on all aspects of the king’s trial: what the lawyers said, what the Convention delegates thought, and what French citizens demanded. While many are familiar with the famous Enlightenment-era encyclopedia edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d’Alembert, fewer may be familiar with the influential encyclopedia known as the Dictionnaire de Trévoux, first published nearly 50 years earlier in 1704. Nicknamed after the French town of Trévoux in which the book was originally published, the Dictionnaire was issued several times during the 18th century. The prospectus above advertises the last edition of 1771, which was available by subscription. Printed in two colors (red and black), which required two separate passes through the printing press, it was an expensive advertisement for a large and expensive work. No fewer than 15 booksellers pooled their resources to finance the publication of this quintessential work of the Enlightenment. Last week Newberry staff enjoyed a visit from three members of the French Consulate in Chicago. We gave them a behind-the-scenes peek at the French Revolution Collection--numbering more than 30,000 pamphlets and 180 periodical titles--in the stacks and discussed some representative items (like this broadside issued by Louis XVI just 3 days before the Storming of the Bastille!). Then we heard presentations by Director of Digital Initiatives and Services Jennifer Dalzin on our project to digitize the Newberry’s French pamphlet collections and French Professor Pascale-Anne Brault of DePaul University on the work of her students to translate the digitized pamphlets into English. It was a wonderful afternoon of cultural exchange!

In this pamphlet, Paris as It Is Today, or, Embellishments of Paris According to a Reasoned and Impartial System, architect François Cointeraux proposes a plan for beautifying the historic Champs-Élysées in Paris during the final years of the French Revolution. Cointeraux was best known as a pioneering architect in rural design, especially the pisé method of building structures from earth or other natural raw materials. But he had plenty to say about the urban center of Paris, including suggestions for renaming buildings and streets to conform to France’s republican ideals. For example, he suggested the name Jardin national (National Garden) as a more suitable name for the Tuileries Garden, the Paris gardens formerly owned by the royal family.

Our friends at DePaul University are having their own translate-athon of our French Revolutionary pamphlets in the classroom! Now that the Newberry’s French pamphlets have been digitized and are freely available online, students and teachers can use them as teaching tools in the comfort of their classrooms and homes while engaging in a wide range of digital scholarship. On this day in 1799, the French Revolution was over. On 9-10 November, France was in the midst of Napoléon Bonaparte’s bloodless coup d’état, known as the coup of 18 brumaire (9 November). The general installed himself as the head of the Consulate, a more autocratic and centralized government than the Directory that it replaced. By 1804, Napoléon was crowned the Emperor of the French.
This patriotic hymn, probably published in 1801, commemorates the success of the coup and celebrates the end of the violence of the War of the Second Coalition (1798-1802) waged between France and several European monarchies. However, not all citizens were satisfied with the coup. An anonymous hand has inserted an alternative verse 4 in this copy of the hymn, beginning with the line, “The frightful monster of anarchy.”

It’s nearly Halloween and spirits are afoot! This anonymously authored pamphlet features a series of fictional dialogues between King Louis XVI and other deceased monarchs of the 18th century, such as Catherine the Great of Russia and Frederick the Great of Prussia, as they await judgment in the underworld. The stage is set when Catherine is ferried to the underworld by Charon, the ferryman of Greek mythology, after her death in 1796. To pass the time, the monarchs discuss the past and future state of affairs in European politics.

We are always amazed at the tools that institutions, researchers, students, and enthusiasts can build from a rich set of data. One project we’ve been following over the last few years is 15cBOOKTRADE, a collaborative project by the University of Oxford and a host of other partners. 15cBOOKTRADE uses material evidence from surviving copies of 15th-century books to explore the first decades of the history of printing in the West. In the process, the project partners have implemented a suite of visualization tools demonstrated in this video.

Tomorrow marks the anniversary of the trial of Marie Antoinette. On 14 October 1793, the queen was charged with high treason and appeared before the Revolutionary Tribunal. Two days later, she was found guilty and executed just hours later by guillotine in the Place de la Révolution (present-day Place de la Concorde). Marie Antoinette’s execution took place eight months after that of her husband King Louis XVI, also by guillotine in the same public square.
This play, published the year after Marie Antoinette’s death, presents a decidedly sympathetic take on the queen during a time when the monarchy was reviled. The Martyrdom of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France was published anonymously in Amsterdam and dramatizes the trial and execution of the queen. Some scholars attribute the play to Étienne Aignan or Jules-Julien Gabriel Berthevin, who authored a similar play on the trial and execution of Louis XVI.

On this day 225 years ago, the Imprimerie nationale in Paris was certainly busy printing what were destined to become historic documents. The day before, on 21 September 1792, the National Convention formally declared that the monarchy was abolished in France.
A few weeks later, 22 September 1792 was retroactively declared the first day of the French Republican Calendar.

To celebrate the opening of the Newberry Library’s new exhibition Religious Change and Print, 1450-1700, we bring you this pamphlet published in 1589 during the French Wars of Religion.
The civil and religious wars of the second half of the 16th century were fought mainly between Roman Catholics and Protestant Huguenots. This anonymously authored pamphlet defends Henry I, Duke of Guise, founder of the Catholic League--whose goal was to eradicate Protestants in France and prevent the Protestant and future king Henry IV from ascending the throne--and his brother and supporter Louis II, Cardinal of Guise. The brothers were assassinated by the bodyguards of King Henry III in December 1588. The following year, in 1589, Henry III was himself assassinated by Jacques Clément of the Catholic League.
