In FARE WELL, Maven lied to Cal by making it seem like the brother he’d loved and cared for (that, according to Maven himself, was still there) was completely gone. To make the whole ordeal less painful for Cal. Because Maven knew it would be easier for Cal to sentence him to death if he could no longer see the old Maven in him. That he would not be able to do it if he still saw Mavey in him. “I could free him of me. Make the choice for him. Give my brother one last proof of the love I can no longer feel, even if he never knows it.”

Also, by doing that, Maven defied Elara’s whispers.

And lastly, doing that showed that while Maven no longer felt the love he had for his brother (according to himself), that love was still there. His decision to lie to spare Cal the pain spoke volumes.

Never thought I’d feel for Maven…but yeah, it’s okay, I didn’t need my heart anyway.
