After talking through it with my sources and friends, and seeing with myself,
i think I’m going to change Surya’s name to Aditya as anon suggested.
My original source came back to me apologizing for making a mistake and that Aditya would work better, so this name is probably the one that will go in the current draft of MB.
Thanks for letting me know guys. And thank you, anon!

You know how long I've been looking for something like this!?
To any sketch artist out there too.
Listen to the cicadas, all abuzz. The world, dark.

Anon here (you don’t need to answer this) I would move to dms but I’ve got pretty bad anxiety and I’m pretty shy so I would prefer to just continue to talk by asks. Thank you
Alright, I get that, I have anxiety as well.
However, you have to understand how it’s... a bit uncomfortable for me?
The ask format is not super good for discussing anything & the anonymity doesn’t make discussing with you feel like we are on the same level in the conversation? Besides, I have no way of knowing who you are, and where you’re coming from.
Every person I’ve talked with about the name issue says something basically the opposite to what you’re saying, which is very confusing when all I have in front of me is you, on anon, just telling me everything I’ve researched and discussed is wrong and disrespectful.
I can’t really take your word at face value when we’re discussing like this.
I want you to know that I really do care enormously about this issue, and that this is why I’m trying to find a way to discuss this in a way that’s both comfortable and practical for us both.
Maybe, if you don’t feel like sending the first DM, you can just give me the name of your blog/a sideblog for me to message you first. Maybe you can create a sideblog that is not attached to your usual one at all, and just message me from there?
I am passionate about respecting people’s culture, but this feels like I’m talking to a wall, not a person. And fro my point of view, that doesn’t inspire trust.
I don’t really know what to do.
Hey, anon, I really am interested in what you’re saying but could you please move to my DMs? It’ll be much easier for use to actually discuss this whole thing rather than waiting for each other to have time to craft public responses.

Hi! I know there’s no strict “magnus counterpart” in this story but given your backstory of magnus’ character and assuming you’re keeping it for the new character you’ve created, as a southeast asian person, I would like to just say that the name you’ve chosen is not the best and most accurate. The name might be an old Tamil/Sanskrit name but it would not have been accurate for a member of one of the Indonesian hindu kingdoms. (1/2)
I mean no offence!! I just wanted you to be aware that of this and that you may come off as disrespectful if you do use it. You’d be better off using a name in the Old Javanese language or one of the other old Indonesian languages. I hope you do take this into consideration and change the name accordingly as this can be very disrespectful to the culture; especially as the name surya has religious connotations as well. (2/2)
Hi!
Thank you for this message and for letting me know.
I have asked several people for input on this issue, since I take this to heart.
Surya has a very different backstory than Magnus, starting from a complete different time (9th Century instead of 17th century), from a different social class (member of ruling family instead of son of a Dutch colonizer and an Indigenous Javanese woman), and from a different religious background as well.
I do understand that the name Surya might be a little too North-Indian? But parts of the reason I chose a name in Sanskrit was because most of the texts and tales of the Mataram Kingdom and the Sanjaya Dynasty were made in Sanskrit, so I and my sources decided that would have been Surya’s language, especially since he was in the ruling class.
I am curious to know if there’s more information you could give me on the exact issues and maybe what you think could be a more accurate name?
Thank you!
