Hold Still - Levi Ackerman x Gender Neutral Reader One Shot
Summary: Levi is in desperate need of a haircut and you offer to cut it for him. The last thing you expect is for him to accept the offer.
Word Count: 1k
Read on AO3
It breaks my heart that Levi probably cuts his own hair. I wanted to believe he would let the person he loves and trusts most to do it for him. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it♡
Thank you to @levislolita for proof reading and @levionlyyours for hyping me up to write this♡
You had already noticed the Captain’s hair. The longer undercut tickling his ears. The way his fringe kept getting in his eyes. The almost constant motion of his hand pushing it back throughout the day. Hange had even made a joke about him growing it out like Eren.
The first time you mentioned it Levi had answered with a look sharp enough to kill the conversation where it stood. However, it didn't stop his hair from falling back into his eyes five minutes later. You watched him shove it away again as he finished signing the last report, his expression pinched with quiet annoyance.
"You're staring."
You tilted your head at him with a small smile.
"Your hair's annoying you."
"Tsk."
The second time you mentioned it Levi had answered with a long, defeated sigh. He was beyond infuriated that he had not had time to cut it. You said it quietly. Reserved. You had often cut your dad's hair before joining the Scouts. You offered to cut his. As usual, you were met with—
"Tsk."
But the annoyance wasn't there. Not anymore.
The knock at your door was so soft you almost missed it.
"Come in."
You looked up from the book in your lap, surprised to find Levi standing in the doorway. His expression was that of someone on the edge. The slightly longer strands at the nape of his neck stuck out at wild angles behind his jaw.
"You busy?"
You set the book down next to you softly.
"Not particularly."
A brief silence settled between you.
"You still offering?"
It took you a heartbeat to realise what he meant.
"The haircut?"
He gave a single nod.
"If the offer still stands."
A warm smile made its way onto your lips before you could stop it.
"It does."
Before long, a towel was draped over his shoulders as he sat in the chair you'd pulled into the middle of your room. A pair of sharp scissors rested in your hand and a razor on the side table. Levi eyed them suspiciously.
"If I leave here looking ridiculous, I'm blaming you."
You laughed. Something in his posture had softened.
"Trust me."
"Tsk."
You rolled your eyes.
"Come on Captain, just trust me."
"I have a high opinion of competence."
"I know you do. No pressure then."
The corner of his mouth twitched. Only for a second. But you caught it. The ghost of a smile.
The room fell quiet except for the rhythmic snip... snip... snip of the scissors. Your fingers ran through his hair holding it gently to trim away at the wild ends. Every so often, your fingertips brushed against his scalp or ear. Each time you felt his shoulders tense. Loose strands clung stubbornly to the back of his neck. You placed the scissors down and reached for the razor.
"Head down a little?"
Without a word, he obeyed. Your hand moved through his hair, pushing the longer strands forwards and holding them out of the way. Your hand rested on the crown of his head, your palm pressing against him. You paused. You blinked a couple times. His head leaned into your palm. You felt it. Captain Levi Ackerman leaned into your hand. Humanity's Strongest Soldier was letting you cut his hair. Your breath caught in your throat. It wasn't about the haircut. It was about trust.
You moved carefully. With precision. Every time you moved your hand, his head went with you. The undercut slowly returned to its usual clean and neat state. Just the way he liked it.
Your fingertips brushed lightly against the warm skin at the nape of his neck as you dusted away the loose hairs. You knew those would irritate him otherwise. He stayed perfectly still, shoulders relaxed in a way you rarely saw.
"You alright?" you asked quietly.
"Hm."
"I'll take that as a yes."
He didn't say anything back. He didn't have to. A smile found your face as you continued to neaten the edges around his ears. For a little while, neither of you spoke. Neither of you needed to. The silence felt comfortable. Somehow it felt warm.
You set the razor down and walked round to face him. Your lips pursed and eyes narrowed as your hand came up to style the hair. You brushed the hair to the natural part. Both hands, fingers spread wide, ran through either side of the parting. Your heart felt like it shattered. Levi's eyes fluttered closed. His breathing slowed. The crease between his brows eased away. The tension in his neck loosened. He looked... peaceful. You weren't sure you had ever seen him like this before.
You finished styling it and took a small step back, studying your work with the same concentration you had the entire time.
"Done."
Levi opened his eyes, blinking once as if waking from a nap he hadn't intended to take. You held up a small handheld mirror. He took it from you, his fingers brushing against yours. He held it up, inspecting the fringe and the edges of the undercut. His hand ran through the top once, the sides falling perfectly above his eye.
"Looks even."
You breathed out a laugh.
"I'll take that as a compliment."
He handed the mirror back without another word. He stood, removing the towel from his shoulders carefully to not drop loose hair all over the floor. He placed it on top of the chair and turned to you.
"I'll come to you next time."
The words felt like being hit mid-air by a Titan. It felt as though the air had been sucked from your lungs. Your heart hammering against your ribs like it wanted to break free. You couldn't think of any words. All you could do was smile. The warm, genuine smile that Levi somehow always managed to get out of you.
He turned on his heel and made his way to the door. Just before crossing the threshold into the hallway, his head swivelled round. His gaze met yours as you were rooted to the spot.
"Tea?"
Your eyes widened.
"Now?"
"You earned it."
There it was again. The ghost of a smile. The slightly upturned lip and tiny eye crinkle you had grown to crave seeing on his features. You nodded once. Some things didn't need to be said. They never had. Trust had always looked more like this.
So I was planning to do a birthday week of Levi One Shots but finding the time to write is impossible.

Currently, I’m working on a rewrite of a Levi/Reader longfic I started a couple years ago which will be the main content of my blog (for now!), but I’ve got a whole bank of ideas that I’d love to explore in the future. I’m always down for a good chat, so please don’t hesitate to reach out :)

levi has your back pressed against the shelves before the door even fully closes. the dustiness of the closet doesn’t matter to him because his mouth is on yours again, quick and hungry. his hand braces beside your head, fingers gripping the wood, while the other holds your waist.
he kisses you like he argues with others, determined to stay in command, and then you tilt your head and kiss him back harder, and he nearly falls apart. damn you, he thinks, feeling the heat climb all the way to his ears.
you pull back to look at him. his face is unmistakably flushed, a bright red spread across his cheeks. his lips are swollen, his pupils wide.
“you look a little off, captain.”
“i look fine,” he argues.
you smile wickedly. “fine? then why are you blushing like that?” you poke his cheek.
“s-shut up.”
he hates that you can do this to him. he hates that one teasing look from you can leave him feeling lightheaded and hot all over. he hates, more than anything, that he wants more of it.
you lean in until your lips nearly touch his again. “make me.”
levi stares at you, then kisses you again with a frustrated sound in his throat, all pent-up embarrassment and want. he’s trying to hard to seem unaffected. it would be convincing if he weren’t practically shaking.
you slide your fingers into his hair, and the reaction is immediate. he inhales sharply against your mouth, then presses closer. oh for fuck’s sake, he thinks. you can definitely tell. he knows you can, and he feels like an idiot.
when you kiss the corner of his mouth, then trail lower to his jaw, he nearly loses what remains of his dignity. “you’re cute like this,” you say.
levi makes a strangled noise that might have passed for a scoff if it wasn’t so out of breath. “cute?”
“mhm.” you press your lips to his, smiling against them when he follows you the moment you start to pull away. “flustered. all clingy and red like a damn tomato.”
“i am not clingy.” he says it while holding your waist with both hands now. he drops his forehead to yours for a moment, trying to collect himself though the effort is pointless. his breath fans warm across your lips. his eyes stay half-lidded, dazed but filled with want.
“this is your fault,” he mutters. “you keep provoking me.”
you brush your nose against his. “and you keep kissing me back.”
levi has no retort. he only stares at you, red to the tips of his ears, and then his expression shifts. “tch. then stop talking.”
he doesn’t bother trying to hide it anymore. he’ll own his flushed face anytime if it means getting to be this close to you.
ᛝ levi pretends he hates physical affection but will stand closer than necessary so your shoulders touch. if you try to move away,, he follows anyways
ᛝ he will remember all the tiny details about you - your favorite tea ,, which side you sleep on,, etc - if you point it out he will deny it
ᛝ levi’s love language is acts of service. he’ll fix your gear,, clean your blades, adjusts your uniform straps - its his way of showing he cares for you
ᛝ levi is the type to walk on the outside of the street and subtly move you away from danger without announcing it
ᛝ when you’re worried,, he’ll ground you by handing you something to hold- his cloak, a cup, his sleeve.
ᛝ when he gets jealous he becomes very controlled,, such as shorter answers, sharper tone or standing closer to you than needed
ᛝ levi lets you see him when he’s exhausted. he trusts you enough to be tired around you,, knowing you won’t judge him
ᛝ he’s soft with kids and animals,, but if you catch him being gentle he’ll pretend it never happened
ᛝ if you get hurt, he’s shockingly calm but his hands shake just a little when he checks you over
ᛝ when your venting he actually listens —doesn’t interrupt or minimize. he wants to make sure you feel validated
ᛝ he lets you see his scars,, its another way he shows trust. he doesn’t explain them unless you ask,, but he doesn’t hide them from you either
ᛝ levi doesn’t really know how to flirt,, but he’ll try, “wow, you look so - ravishing.. ?” he’s so lost..
ᛝ he loves your presence so deeply that when you’re gone, he feels off-balance - when your gone, he waits for you.
The strange thing about Levi Ackerman falling in love is that absolutely nothing changes.
At least on the surface.
He doesn’t become softer, doesn’t suddenly smile, doesn’t start complimenting you.
If anything, he becomes even more insufferable.
The squad immediately notices something is different.
Not obvious, just different.
Levi’s eyes follow you during briefings.
You somehow end up assigned to his side more often.
The captain who hated unnecessary conversation now occasionally asks you questions that have nothing to do with missions.
Small things like what book you’re reading, why you’re limping, if your shoulder still botheres you.
Tiny questions.
Tiny concerns.
Tiny cracks.
Nobody misses them.
Especially not Hange.
Meanwhile, you’re having your own problem.
Because somehow Levi keeps showing up.
You wake up early? He’s already cleaning. You stay up late? He’s still working. You go to train? He’s there too. You visit the stables? There he is.
It had gotten to the point you were convinced he was following you.
Then one evening you’re sitting alone outside headquarters.
The sun is setting.
The air is cool.
Peaceful.
For once.
You hear footsteps.
Without looking up, you already know who it is.
“Captain.”
Levi sits beside you.
Neither of you speak.
Five minutes pass, ten, fifteen, and somehow it’s not awkward.
Eventually Levi speaks.
“You don’t have to call me Captain when we’re alone.”
Slowly turn toward him.
“…What?”
He immediately looks annoyed.
“As long as we’re not on duty.”
You stare, not sure what to say. Because somehow this feels oddly significant.
Much more significant than it should.
“Then what am I supposed to call you?”
“Levi.”
The name sounds strange coming from him.
Like something private.
Something reserved.
You try it.
“Levi.”
Something unreadable flashes across his face.
Gone almost immediately.
But you see it.
And for some reason your heart stumbles.
After that, things become worse.
Or better.
You aren’t sure.
You start seeking him out.
Not intentionally.
At first.
You find yourself lingering after meetings.
Walking slower when he’s nearby, looking for him across crowded rooms, waiting for his sarcastic comments.
The problem is neither of you says anything.
Months pass.
Nothing happens but so does everything.
You learn his habits.
He learns yours.
He knows when you’re upset before anyone else. You know when he’s exhausted even when he’s pretending otherwise.
He starts saving a cup of tea whenever he thinks you’ll be working late.
Never mentions it.
Just leaves it there.
You start fixing paperwork mistakes before he finds them.
Never mention it.
Just do it.
The two of you become a partnership without ever discussing it.
One night an expedition returns badly.
Too many casualties.
Too many funerals.
Too many empty beds.
The entire headquarters feels heavy.
You can’t sleep.
So you end up outside, staring up at the stars trying not to think.
Footsteps.
Again.
Always him.
Levi sits beside you.
No questions.
No lectures.
No empty reassurances.
Just presence.
Minutes pass.
Then quietly—“I hate this.”
You don’t specify what.
You don’t need to.
Levi stares at the sky.
“Yeah.”
The word is barely audible.
But somehow it means more than any speech could.
Because Levi never admits weakness.
Never.
Yet here he is, sharing it with you.
You realize then that he trusts you.
Completely.
And the realization steals your breath.
You look over.
He’s already looking at you.
For a moment neither of you move.
Neither of you speak.
The world feels strangely small.
Just the two of you.
The stars.
The silence.
Then Levi looks away first.
And the moment breaks.
But neither of you forget it.
A few weeks later, things finally go wrong.
You get injured.
Not badly.
But enough.
Enough to scare him.
A Titan grabs your leg during an expedition.
You escape, you survive.
Everything is fine.
Except Levi witnesses the entire thing.
The second you’re safely back behind the walls, he rounds on you.
“You call that being careful?”
“What?”
“You nearly got yourself killed.”
“I was fine.”
“You weren’t.”
“I am now.”
“You—”
He stops, jaw clenched
The anger doesn’t make sense.
Not this much.
Not for a minor injury.
And suddenly you understand.
“Levi.”
The anger vanishes instantly.
He knows you’ve figured it out.
“You scared me.”
The words seem dragged out of him reluctantly.
Your heart nearly stops.
Because doesn’t say things like that.
Not unless he means them.
And he never says things he doesn’t mean.
After that, there’s nowhere left to hide.
It’s late, again.
At this point, neither of you question why you’re still awake together after everyone else has gone to bed.
The reports are finished.
The office is quiet.
Neither of you have left.
You sit across from Levi, absentmindedly turning a pen between your fingers.
Outside, the headquarters is silent.
Peaceful for once.
“You should get some sleep.”
You glance up.
“You’re one to talk.”
Levi clicks his tongue.
A few months ago that would’ve been the end of the conversation.
Now the silence settles comfortably.
Neither of you rush to fill it.
You study him for a moment.
The dark circles under his eyes.
The way exhaustion sits in his shoulders.
The slight crease between his brows.
He’s tired.
He always is.
“You know,” you say quietly, “you’re allowed to let other people handle things sometimes.”
Levi snorts.
“That’s a terrible idea.”
“Not everyone is incompetent.”
“Most people are.”
You roll your eyes.
And for some reason, Levi’s gaze lingers.
Just for a second longer than normal.
Your smile fades.
Not because you’re uncomfortable.
Because suddenly the room feels smaller.
Quieter.
Levi notices it too.
You can tell.
The air changes.
Subtle.
But undeniable.
Neither of you look away.
For months you’ve danced around this.
For months you’ve pretended those moments meant nothing.
The late-night conversations, the concern, the way he always looked for you after expeditions, the way you’d find yourself searching for him in every room.
Levi exhales slowly.
Then he stands.
You expect him to leave.
Instead, he stops beside your chair.
Your heart immediately starts acting ridiculous.
“Levi?”
He looks down at you, his expression unreadable.
For a moment, it seems like he’s about to say something.
Levi leans down.
And kisses you.
It’s not dramatic, not rushed, just certain.
Like a decision he’d already made weeks ago.
Maybe months ago.
His hand shifts to the side of your face, careful and slightly hesitant.
The way he handles things he actually cares about.
When he finally pulls back, the room remains silent.
Then he steps back.
“…Took us long enough.”
You stare at him before laughing.
Levi immediately looks irritated.
Which somehow makes it even better.
“You say that like this wasn’t entirely your fault.”

Summary: Levi finally stops rejecting his love for his caring roommate , after being emotionally shattered from his recent battle. Teaching him what it’s like to have something gentle for once.
CW: mentions of blood, weapons, & death
fluff, angst, emotional distraught, sappy ending
The lock clicked softly. You looked up from the book in your lap, smiling instinctively. “You’re home-“
The words died in your throat. Levi stood in the doorway, still as stone.
His cloak was torn. His boots were caked in mud and blood. One sleeve had been sliced open, revealing a bandage that had already begun to stain red. His face was unreadable, but his eyes…
His eyes weren’t there. Not really. They stared through the room as though part of him had never left the battlefield.
You stood slowly. “…Levi?”
He didn’t answer. He only removed his gear with mechanical movements. Buckle. Strap. Blade. One after another. Then one of the metal canisters slipped from his fingers. It hit the floor with a deafening clang.
Levi didn’t even react.
Your heart sank.
He always reacted. He hated disorder. He hated noise. He hated carelessness.
Tonight… He just stared at it.
“I’ll clean it later,” he muttered, though it sounded like he was talking to himself.
“You don’t have to.”
“I said I’ll clean it.” His voice was sharp.
You nodded anyway. “Okay.” Silence stretched between you. You could almost hear the ghosts he’d brought home.
Finally, he spoke. “We lost six.”
His jaw tightened.
“I watched one of them die.”
Another pause.
“I couldn’t do anything.”
The words sounded wrong coming from him. Levi never admitted helplessness.
Never.
“I keep seeing it.”
His breathing became uneven. “I close my eyes and they’re still there.”
You stepped toward him.
He noticed immediately. His shoulders stiffened. Every instinct told him to brace. To prepare for criticism. For someone telling him to stop dwelling on it.
To get over it.
To keep moving.
That was all he’d ever known. The Underground taught him survival. Not comfort. Not softness. Not affection.
The only hands he’d known growing up had shoved him aside, struck him, grabbed him by the collar, or stolen from him. Even after joining the Scouts, respect came through discipline, not tenderness.
Gentleness had never belonged in his world.
You stopped in front of him. “this isnt healthy Levi”
His eyes lifted to yours.“…what”
He couldn’t remember anyone caring for him before.
Not once. Not before grabbing his arm. Not before treating a wound. Not before demanding something from him.
You slowly reached for his hand.
The moment your fingers brushed his skin…
He flinched.
Not dramatically. Just enough that you felt it. Like his body had reacted before his mind could stop it. His breathing hitched.
Your chest ached.
“It’s okay,” you whispered.
You didn’t tighten your grip. You didn’t force him to stay. You simply rested your hand against his.
Warm.
Still.
Patient.
Levi stared at your intertwined fingers as if he couldn’t understand what they were doing there. He denied his love for you long ago. Rejecting it as if it was a disease, becaus it was to him. Loving only gets you hurt. So with that, he did nothing but push away and ignore, but tonight was different. He was too exhuasted to pull away.
Your thumb gently brushed across his scarred knuckles. Such a tiny movement. So impossibly soft.
His entire body froze. It didn’t hurt. That was the problem. He’d spent his whole life preparing for pain. His body knew how to survive punches, cuts, bruises, broken bones. It didn’t know how to survive kindness.
“…Why are you doing that?” he asked quietly.
“Because you deserve someone to be gentle with you.”
His expression cracked. “No.”
“You do.”
“No.” The word came out harsher this time. “I don’t.” He pulled his hand back, not out of anger, but panic.
“You don’t understand.” His breathing grew quicker.
“If you’re gentle…” His voice broke.
“I won’t know what to do.”
You looked at him, your own eyes beginning to sting. He looked ashamed. Ashamed that something as simple as holding a hand frightened him more than facing Titans.
“I’ve had people stitch me up without anesthetic.” His laugh was hollow.
“I’ve had bones set while awake.” Another breath.
“I’ve been beaten.” His eyes stayed fixed on the floor. “I know how to handle that.”
His fingers trembled. “But this…”
He looked at you. “…This scares me.”
Your heart shattered. Without another word, you stepped close enough that your arms barely brushed his. “I’m going to hug you now.”
You asked.
He simply stared. “…You still ask.”
“Always.”
“…Even if I say no?”
“I’ll stop.”
His throat tightened. No one had ever given him that choice. Not once. He closed his eyes.
“…I don’t think anyone’s ever asked me.”
You wrapped your arms around him with impossible care, as though you were afraid he might break.
At first he didn’t move. His back stayed rigid. His hands remained at his sides. His breathing was shallow.
He felt trapped, not because you were holding him too tightly, but because every instinct screamed that there had to be a catch.
People didn’t hold you just because they cared. People always wanted something. His body waited for the shove. For the criticism. For the pain. It never came.
Instead… You rubbed slow circles across his back. So light he could barely feel them. No urgency. No expectations. No demands.
Just…Comfort.
His eyes burned. He couldn’t remember the last time someone had touched him without violence, necessity, or obligation. He couldn’t remember ever being held simply because someone wanted him to feel safe.
Something inside him..something he’d buried decades ago, finally cracked. A quiet, broken sound escaped him. He jerked back immediately, horrified.
“…I didn’t…” Another shaky breath.
“…I don’t cry.”
“You can.”
“I can’t.”
“You already are.”
His hand flew to his face. His fingertips came away damp. He stared at them in disbelief. As though tears belonged to someone else.
“fuck.”
“im so sorry..”
The apology came instantly.Automatic. For crying. For needing someone. For falling apart.
You gently cupped his face. He froze again. Your palms were warm. Soft. You weren’t trying to fix him. You were simply there. “You never have to apologize for hurting.”
His lips trembled. “I don’t know how to do this.”
“You don’t have to know.”
“I don’t know how to let someone care about me.”
“Then I’ll teach you.”
A tear escaped before he could stop it. Then another.
Years of grief. Years of exhaustion. Years of pretending that losing people hurt less if he expected it.
He leaned forward before he realized he was moving. His forehead rested against yours. His hands finally lifted, hesitating in the air.
Unsure. As though asking permission without words. You took one of them and placed it gently around your waist.
“There.” You smiled through your own tears. “That’s perfect.”
He held you like something unimaginably precious. So carefully. As though he was terrified that too much pressure would make you disappear. His face buried itself against your shoulder. His fingers tightened in the fabric of your shirt.
Not enough to hurt.
Just enough to anchor himself.
His voice was almost inaudible. “…Don’t leave.”
You wrapped your arms around him a little tighter.“I’m right here.”
“I was so afraid…” He swallowed hard. “…If I loved you…” His voice cracked completely.“…I’d have to watch you die too.”
You kissed the side of his head so gently he barely felt it. “one day we’ll lose each other.”
He stiffened.
“But not tonight.”
His grip tightened.
“So tonight…” You stroked his hair with slow, careful movements. “…you don’t have to be humanity’s strongest.”
Another tear slipped free.
“You don’t have to be Captain Levi.” You rested your cheek against his. “You can just be the man who’s exhausted.”
For the rest of the night, you stayed with him.
You cleaned the blood from his hands with warm water, taking your time over every scrape and cut. Each time he flinched, you reminded him quietly what you were doing before your fingers touched him again.
You made him tea. Wrapped a blanket around his shoulders. Sat beside him in silence when words became too heavy. Eventually, his head tipped onto your shoulder.
He fell asleep there, still holding your hand. Even in his sleep, his fingers would tighten every so often, as if afraid you’d vanish the moment he let go.
Every time they did, you squeezed his hand back.
A silent promise.
I’m here.
I’m not going anywhere.
And for the first time since he was a frightened little boy surviving in the Underground, Levi slept through the night knowing what it felt like to be held with nothing but love.

I daydreamed this while listening to Start Of Time by Gabrielle Aplin. Just a little fluff with a hopeful ending, for once. Hope you enjoy our Levi being a sweetie♡
The sea was louder than Levi expected. Not deafening. Not violent. Just a constant noise. The sapphire waves rolled endlessly against the sandy shore, stretching farther than the eye could see. The scent of salt hung in the air, carried by a warm breeze that tugged at his clothes. Around him, the others celebrated.
Hange was jumping and splashing in the water excitedly. Jean was arguing with Connie about the water being drinkable. Sasha was trying to shout over them to find out if anything in the sea was edible. Armin stood knee-deep in the water, staring at a shell with wonder in his eyes. The dreams he'd carried since childhood finally coming true. Mikasa stood near Eren, who were both looking out to the horizon, the sun shining off the water around them.
For a moment, Levi watched them. His squad. They were survivors. They were dreamers. They were the fools who had somehow made it this far. His chest tightened. So many others should have been here. Every Scout who gave up their life for this moment. The ghosts followed him everywhere. Even now. Especially now. His gaze dropped to the golden sand beneath his boots. He should have felt relief. Victory. Something. Instead there was only a familiar ache. A weight he'd grown so accustomed to carrying that he barely noticed it anymore.
Then he heard your laugh. Soft. Bright. Levi looked up. You were standing a short distance away, the waves brushing against your ankles. Your boots abandoned on the shoreline and your trousers rolled to your knees. You were watching Jean and Connie tasting the salty water, then immediately spitting it out. The sunlight danced across the water around you, turning the sea into liquid gold. For a second, he couldn't breathe. Not because you looked beautiful. Though you did. It was because only weeks ago he thought he'd lost you. He could still remember the sight of your broken body among the rubble. The blood. The panic. The sick certainty settling in his stomach. Another one. Another person he'd failed to save. Another name to add to the endless list. Yet here you were. Alive. Laughing. Then, all of a sudden, looking back at him. The sunlight caught your eyes and something inside him cracked. Not painfully. Just quietly. Like ice thawing after a long winter.
You smiled. It was a warm, soft smile. The kind of smile that said 'there you are'. The same smile that had greeted him through countless mornings. The same smile that had stubbornly remained even when the world was falling apart.
"What?" you called.
Levi blinked. "What?"
"You're staring."
His first instinct was to deny it. Instead he found himself walking toward you. One step. Then another. Your smile faltered slightly. Not from fear. From curiosity. Your head tilted, questioning his movement. The expression on his face must have looked strange. It felt strange. Levi stopped in front of you. Close enough to see the freckles scattered across your cheeks and nose. Close enough to see the details of your face that most would miss. Close enough to reach out. Yet he hesitated because this was dangerous. Not Titans or war or blades and guns. This. Wanting someone. Needing them. Allowing himself to imagine a future that included them. His entire life had taught him that the things he loved didn't stay. That happiness was temporary. That people left or died. But standing there beneath the warmth of the sun, watching the waves stretch endlessly toward the horizon, he found himself tired of living by that rule. For once, just this once, he wanted to be selfish.
Your voice was gentle.
"Levi?"
The concern in your eyes nearly undid him. He let out a slow breath. Then, before he could convince himself otherwise, he lifted a hand and brushed a loose strand of hair from your face. The gesture was so careful almost as if you might disappear if he moved too quickly. Your eyes widened. The world seemed to still. The sea. The wind. The distant laughter and arguments. All of it faded away. There was only you. Alive. Here. With him.
Levi swallowed. His voice came out rough, raw with an emotion he never let himself feel.
"You scared the hell out of me."
You blinked. Then your expression softened.
"Oh."
Just one word because you understood everything he couldn't say. The fear and grief that he felt. The guilt he held on to. The affection he'd buried beneath duty and survival. So your hand found his, gently. Warm. Real. And suddenly the future didn't seem quite so impossible.
Levi looked from your face, to your intertwined hands and back to your face. That usual intense gaze replaced by a look that could only be described as relief. For the first time in a long time, it felt like there might be something waiting for him beyond the next battle. Something worth holding onto. You.
Levi's eyes drifted shut. His breath caught in his throat. He leaned forward at a painfully slow rate, like he expected you to take the chance to pull away. To run from him as far as you could. But you didn't. You moved closer.
The kiss was tender. Gentle like it was made of glass, a fragile thing in a cruel world. He was not demanding or desperate, it was a soft longing that couldn't have been described in words. The quiet collision of two people who had nearly lost the chance entirely. His hand found your cheek. Yours tightened around his. And for a brief, perfect moment, the weight he carried every day felt lighter. When he finally pulled away, his forehead rested against yours. His breath ghosted across your face. A content sigh left his lips.
The waves continued their endless song around you. The sunlight warmed his skin. And for the first time, in longer than he could remember, Levi allowed himself to hope.
