not sure if I'm the only one, but after today and yesterday it's difficult for me to really be unhinged about nhl players as I have been. under the veneer of pride night and other DEI activities the nhl hosts, most nhl players are ultimately very conservative, very homophonic, and very sexist. im not white, im not a man, and i ordered a binder last weekend that I probably won't wear outside anytime soon. not to say every single player is a terrible person but it's difficult to engage with the sport when you know half the players you adore would love if were found de*d in a ditch.

this also isn't meant to be an exposé of any kind, but something that really sticks out in my mind is I was a hugeee fan of jakub lauko when he was on the bruins, until I saw that he was following matt walsh on twitter and had a history of making xenophobic tweets (that were eventually deleted). it immediately stopped making me like him as much. there are plenty of other players who have literally been convicted or come close to it (carter hart, milan lucic, patrick kane) and it's a reminder that it's not just the higher ups (looking at you, st*n bowman). it's kind of just the culture.

I'm not interested in trying to dictate how anyone's going to engage with their favorite players or teams or whatever, but these past few days have been an ice cold reminder of who nhl players really support. I'm sure everyone's hopes are that their favorite pookie can do no wrong, but outside of this space, most nhl fans are also just as misogynistic and homophobic. the cognitive dissonance btwn being a fan and who the league is actually meant for is difficult to reckon with.
