MEESHELL DESERVES BETTER THAN HUMPHREY ISTG 😭
Also his reasoning to learn how to swim is just “so he can get a date with her” like what?? He doesn’t even like specific things about her (iirc), he just thinks she’s pretty or whatever? 😭 Meeshell please do better
I think they'd be cute if someone handled them with care. Take note I don't give attention to those two but based on what you said,,, humphrey get it together bro
Hello!!! Humphrey fan + Eggshell fan here. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I really hardly think this is a fair assessment, and I will take any opportunity to talk about Humphrey.
Also, this confession got me so bad that I am getting a 170 dollar Eggshell commission in its honor.
Firstly, saying his reasoning to swim is just so he could get a date with her is, quite literally, cutting out half his sentence. The full thing is:
Notice the "I wanted you to like me", which has very different implications from just wanting a date. Additionally, it's really not a big deal or a bad thing to want to learn something related to someone you like? If a character had a crush on a Wonderlandian and so wanted to learn Riddlish, I wouldn't find that to be a negative. A character wanting to learn how to swim because they fell for a mermaid isn't much different—her whole life was in the sea, swimming is absolutely intrinsic to her.
Saying he doesn't even like specific things about her is also a very strange thing to say, considering the book isn't from his point of view and therefore we can't see his thoughts, only what he chooses to say, and he is not a character who would make direct declarations that easily. If you actually read the book, though, it's pretty obvious what he likes about Meeshell. Later in the book, we find out Humphrey knew she was a mermaid from the moment she arrived, which means he knew who she was and what she looked like already. If he only liked her because she was pretty, why would he take so long to message her? Rather, what prompted him into sending her a message in the first place?
There are more, but I'll leave it at this. Meeshell and Humphrey, as the book spares nothing to show, are actually very similar. They are both clumsy, shy, and awkward. The reason Humphrey likes Meeshell isn't solely because of her appearance, but because he sees himself in her, and it makes him want to help her and get closer to her. Not only that, you can see he ACTIVELY avoids telling her who he is multiple times. That is very contradictory if his sole goal with her was to get a date with her (swimming aside), but it's not. His primary goal, as we can clearly tell, was to help her feel more comfortable in Ever After High.
Again, you can dislike the ship as much as you want, everyone has preferences. But I'd just like to also make my point of why I like it and disagree.
