To any fic writers who worry they are wasting their time... I read a fic for a relatively small and inactive fandom about three years ago. And there was one specific scene where a character watched another dancing like an idiot to a beyonce song and it was so sweet and loving that even now years later I have that song on one of my spotify playlist so every once in a while it will play and remind me of that fic, and every time it does I smile and feel a little happier.
The stats on a fic will never really tell you if your writing touched someone. There's no numerical way to show you what impact you made. Maybe you are wasting time, or maybe you are writing something that someone will remember for a long time, something that will never fail to make them smile.
One time when I was still new at writing I read something to the effect of “nothing is sacred. Even the people who love your fanfic today will have forgotten all about it in a few months.”
That’s just. Not true.
I can still remember parts of the very first stories I read. Maybe not the titles or authors, maybe not even the most profound parts. But I remember them. A little line of dialogue, a creative description, something that sounded JUST LIKE the character(s).
There are some stories I do remember by title and author, and still recall vividly. I even go back and read them now and then if they’re still around. Some of these stories are 25 years old. I was in sixth grade when I found them. I still think about them. I still smile about them. Way, way more than “a few months” after I read them.
I’ve gone to the women’s restroom a lot in my life, and not once have I ever seen genitalia besides my own while there. No penis, no vulva, nothing.
I’ve literally seen a bathroom full of baby lizards, one time a whole fucking fish on the floor, and someone come out of the stall with a plate, knife, and fork like they just ate a meal before I’ve seen genitals. Why would I ever be worried about seeing some woman with her cock out
I've used the men's restroom a lot in my life without stalls and not seen genitalia. Even when lined up at the urinals with no barriers between them.
It's almost as if most people don't want to share what they're packing with the rest of the room.
And most people don't want to look.
Really the only time you're going to see something is if you're trying to see it. And that says more about you than the people whose privacy you're invading.
You can't go peeking at other people's genitals and then get mad at them if you see something you don't want to see
Boom: they connect
