Hate & Basketball - TWELVE
school had rolled around again, and honestly the only thing keeping zanine sane was the fact it was already wednesday.
just two more days until friday.
today had actually been going pretty well too.
keyword: had.
because everything immediately went downhill the second she got to third period.
well… attempted to get to third period.
she had accidentally left her phone upstairs on the third floor after second hour, and by the time she realized it, the passing period was almost over already.
so naturally, zanine ended up sprinting through the halls like her life depended on it.
and those school stairs?
absolutely evil.
by the time she reached the gym doors, slightly out of breath and irritated, she already knew she was late.
unfortunately, mr. lee looked like he was in one of his moods today too.
the gym was weirdly quiet when she walked in.
everyone was already seated on the bleachers while mr. lee sat near his clipboard doing attendance.
“…zanine?”
perfect timing.
“i’m here!” she blurted immediately while hurrying inside.
every single head in the gym turned toward her at once.
great.
zanine could physically feel embarrassment creeping onto her face as she slowed her pace slightly, trying not to look as out of breath as she actually was.
mr. lee stared at her over the rim of his glasses.
“nice of you to join us.”
a few students snickered quietly.
“sorry,” zanine muttered. “i forgot my phone upstairs.”
“and your phone was worth being late?”
“…yes?”
the gym laughed louder this time.
mr. lee sighed, already pointing toward the court. “well. i hope it was worth it because now you’re doing suicides. on the line.”
zanine’s eyes went wide instantly. “hold on— mr. lee!”
“on the line, zanine.”
she groaned dramatically, tossing her bag aside. “you should be used to it already,” yuma called out loudly, earning a couple laughs from maki and kei.
zanine shot him a deadly look. “yuma, shut the hell up.”
but even as she spoke, her attention flickered without permission.
nico.
sitting a row lower than yuma.
blonde hair catching the gym lights again.
he wasn’t laughing this time.
just watching.
and somehow that was worse.
zanine quickly looked away, tightening her ponytail as she stepped onto the line.
mr. lee lifted his whistle.
“ready? go!”
zanine took off immediately.
first sprint.
back.
touch line.
turn.
again.
her breathing got heavier fast, legs burning as she pushed harder anyway, refusing to slow down even as her chest tightened.
“let’s go zanine!” someone from her team called.
“you got this!”
she ignored the voices, focusing only on the line in front of her.
but every time she turned back toward the bleachers—
she could feel it.
that same gaze.
still on her.
not teasing this time.
just… there.
and it was messing with her rhythm in a way she didn’t want to acknowledge.
“focus,” she muttered to herself under her breath, pushing harder on the next sprint.
because whatever that feeling was—
she didn’t have time for it.
when she finished, zanine immediately shot mr. lee a glare before dragging herself over to the bleachers and collapsing beside lily. her breathing was still uneven, chest rising and falling as she tried to catch her breath.
lily didn’t say anything at first, just gently patted her shoulder like she understood the frustration without needing words.
“okay! you’re all free to do whatever,” mr. lee called out suddenly.
and just like that, he walked off the court like nothing had happened, clipboard in hand, disappearing toward the equipment room.
“damn,” yeji said, watching him go. “who pissed in his cereal?”
“i should’ve,” zanine muttered under her breath.
manon snorted immediately. “please.”
ella opened her mouth to add something—but then footsteps approached.
maki, yuma, nico, harua, and fuma all came over and dropped down closer to the girls, taking up space on the same bleacher row.
ella immediately rolled her eyes.
maki noticed.
“how were the suicides, zanine?” yuma asked, already grinning like he was waiting for a reaction.
“i don’t know,” she shot back instantly. “why don’t you go try them?”
yuma raised both hands in surrender. “hey, i’m not the one who showed up late today.”
“barely late,” zanine corrected sharply.
“still late,” he said.
zanine scoffed and reached for her phone, already done with the conversation.
but before she could fully check out, she felt it again.
that feeling.
eyes.
she looked up without thinking.
nico.
sitting slightly lower than the rest, just watching her.
no joke this time. no smirk. no teasing.
just… looking.
zanine’s mood dipped instantly.
“…what?” she asked flatly. “you got something to say too?”
nico didn’t respond right away.
he just shook his head once, expression unreadable, then looked away like nothing happened.
zanine stared at him for a second longer, confused, annoyed, and something else she refused to name.
then she exhaled sharply and turned back to her phone.
blocking it out.
all of it.
except this time, it didn’t feel as easy as it usually did.
lunch came around and nico was honestly starving.
even though he didn’t usually mess with school lunch half the time, today his stomach was loud enough to make it personal.
he stood in line behind euijoo, leaning slightly over his shoulder like he was already bored of waiting.
“can i have your lunch?” nico asked casually.
euijoo turned around immediately, eyebrows furrowed. “no?”
nico side-eyed him like the answer was disappointing but not unexpected.
he shifted his attention forward instead, spotting jo a few steps ahead.
“jo,” he called. “can i have your lunch?”
jo blinked at him. “why?”
nico didn’t even hesitate. “i’m hungry.”
jo stared at him for a second like he was genuinely considering if that was a valid argument.
then he sighed. “let me keep the rice.”
nico nodded immediately. “deal.”
“that was too easy,” euijoo muttered.
“you snooze, you lose,” nico replied, like that explained everything about his morals.
jo handed over the tray parts one by one as they moved forward in line, and nico acted like he hadn’t just successfully negotiated for food like it was trade diplomacy.
“you’re insane,” euijoo said again, watching him.
“i’m hungry,” nico repeated simply, like that justified everything.
jo slid him the rest of the meal with a warning look. “don’t make this a habit.”
nico already had a fork in hand. “no promises.”
behind them, someone in line laughed, and nico barely reacted—too focused on finally getting something to eat.
for once, his brain wasn’t overthinking anything.
just food.
as he and the others made their way toward the table, they immediately slowed down.
“…the hell?” nico muttered under his breath.
because it wasn’t just any group sitting there.
zanine.
and her friends.
all already spread out comfortably like they owned the place.
“yo,” nico called as they got closer, stopping right behind the table.
zanine looked up from her tray instantly, eyes locking onto his.
of course.
“this is our table,” he said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
for a second, the entire table went quiet.
then yeji leaned back slightly, arms crossing. “since when do tables have ownership?”
“since we sat here first,” yuma added quickly, nodding like that was a legally binding argument.
“you didn’t sit here first,” lily replied calmly. “we arrived at the same time.”
“incorrect,” kei cut in immediately. “we got here spiritually first.”
manon stared at him. “what does that even mean?”
“it means move,” yuma repeated, pointing lazily toward another table.
zanine let out a short breath through her nose. “or what?”
that made the air shift slightly.
nico’s eyes flicked to her at the same time she spoke.
and for a second, neither of them looked away.
“or we’ll all just sit here,” nico said casually.
ella immediately shook her head. “no.”
that got everyone’s attention.
“there’s way too many of us for that,” she continued.
“we’ve been sitting here since school started, ella,” maki said, already annoyed.
“i don’t think i asked, maki.” she shot back instantly.
“okay! stop it,” fuma cut in, stepping between the tension like he was physically tired of their existence.
a few people at nearby tables were already watching.
fuma exhaled. “we’ll just sit over there.”
he pointed to the table right next to them.
harua immediately nodded. “that’s fine.”
taki followed quickly. “yeah, that works.”
nico didn’t move right away.
his eyes stayed on zanine for a second longer than necessary.
zanine noticed.
of course she did.
he walked toward the other table without waiting for the rest, shoving his tray down like it had personally offended him.
yuma followed, grinning to himself.
because whatever that was between them?
it was getting harder and harder to pretend it wasn’t there.
the cafeteria slowly returned to normal once both groups settled at separate tables.
well… mostly normal.
because even with one table between them, the tension was still there.
“why was he looking at you like that?” ella asked quietly before taking a bite of her food.
zanine nearly choked on her drink. “looking at me like what?”
“exactly,” yeji added immediately.
“you guys are actually obsessed,” zanine muttered, avoiding eye contact with all of them.
manon glanced over toward the boys’ table. “nah. i think they’re the obsessed ones.”
zanine followed her gaze without meaning to.
bad idea.
because the second she looked over, nico looked up too.
their eyes met immediately.
again.
and this time, neither of them reacted right away.
it only lasted maybe two seconds before zanine looked away first, grabbing her drink like she suddenly became fascinated with the label on the bottle.
“…oh my god,” lily whispered beside her.
“i hate this conversation already.”
“you hate every conversation involving him,” ella pointed out.
“because you all make things weird.”
“we?” yeji repeated. “girl, all he did was look up and somehow you forgot how to function.”
“i literally drank juice.”
“with attitude,” manon added.
across the way, the boys weren’t much better.
“you smiled,” yuma suddenly said.
nico looked up from jo’s stolen lunch immediately. “what are you talking about?”
“when she looked at you.”
“i did not smile.”
“you kinda did,” harua admitted carefully.
nico stared at him in betrayal. “whose side are you on?”
“there are sides?” taki asked innocently.
“apparently,” kei muttered while eating fries.
maki glanced over toward the girls’ table briefly before looking back at nico. “you’re making it obvious.”
nico frowned. “making what obvious?”
the entire table went silent for a second.
then jo laughed quietly into his drink.
“damn,” euijoo said. “he’s gone.”
“i’m not ‘gone,’” nico argued immediately.
“you looked at her before you even sat down,” yuma pointed out.
“and?”
“and you literally stopped walking.”
nico opened his mouth—then closed it again.
because unfortunately…
he did stop walking.
meanwhile, at the other table, zanine stabbed at her food dramatically while trying not to think about any of this.
which was difficult.
because now she could physically feel when nico looked over.
and the worst part?
sometimes she looked back.

uh oh things are changing
i’m kinda getting writers block and running out of ideas .. i’m thinking as i go so if it starts to suck im sorry

Hate & Basketball - ELEVEN
ella was pretty sure she still liked maki.
honestly, she had liked him for years.
ever since sixth grade.
back then it was small—just a stupid middle school crush she thought she’d grow out of eventually.
except she never did.
if anything, it only got worse over time.
the thing that hurt the most was the fact maki barely even knew she existed until freshman year.
which honestly made no sense to ella because they’d always gone to the same schools, always ended up in similar classes, always been around each other somehow.
but maybe maki just genuinely never noticed her.
and that thought alone used to bother her more than she liked admitting.
then freshman year happened.
and somehow the universe decided to make things even worse for her.
because maki had a ridiculous glow up over the summer.
middle school maki was cute.
high school maki?
unfortunately hot.
ella hated it badly.
she still remembered the first day of freshman year vividly too.
walking into class half asleep only to look up and nearly lose her mind because somehow maki looked completely different now. taller, sharper features, better style, confidence—everything.
and from that moment on, her crush became genuinely serious.
which eventually led to humiliation.
the memory still made her stomach twist even now.
“why would you ever think i’d date you?”
those words replayed in her head more often than she’d ever admit aloud.
especially because everybody had been there to hear it.
including zanine.
including his friends.
including the basketball teams.
ella sighed quietly from her bed, staring up at the ceiling while scrolling aimlessly through her phone.
because the annoying part?
despite all that embarrassment…
despite how angry she acted around him now…
a part of her still liked him anyway.
and she honestly felt pathetic for it.
at the time, ella genuinely didn’t think maki would say something like that to her.
from everything she had seen before then, she thought he was one of the sweetest boys ever.
quiet. polite. calm.
different from the rest of them.
and honestly?
he probably was sweet.
just… apparently not to her.
and that realization hurt more than she liked admitting.
now that they were both seniors, ella found herself wondering sometimes if maki ever regretted what he said that day.
because surely he had to, right?
those words were harsh. humiliating.
and he said them in front of everybody.
ella sighed quietly, pulling her knees closer to her chest while thinking about it.
if he regretted it, he would’ve apologized by now.
it had been two years.
two whole years.
meanwhile, on the other side of town, maki was thinking about it too.
even if he never admitted it out loud.
because if everyone was being honest…
maki had felt completely put on the spot that day.
the second yuma loudly exposed ella’s crush in front of everybody, panic immediately settled in his chest.
he didn’t know how to react.
and it wasn’t like ella was unattractive.
far from it, actually.
ella wasn’t ugly at all.
maki knew that.
everybody knew that.
but suddenly having all that attention thrown onto him in front of both basketball teams made him feel trapped somehow.
cornered.
like everybody was waiting for his answer.
and because of that pressure, his brain reacted before he could really think.
so he rejected her.
harshly.
too harshly.
sometimes he still remembered the look on her face afterward too.
the embarrassment.
the hurt.
and honestly?
he hated remembering it.
maki stared down at his phone from his bedroom floor, absentmindedly spinning a basketball beside him.
why did he say it like that?
was it because of nicholas and the whole “enemy teams” thing?
because none of the boys really got close to the girls team back then. not publicly at least.
or…
was he just nervous?
because truthfully, maki had never been good with feelings.
especially not when people were watching him.
and maybe that day, instead of admitting he got flustered, he chose the easier option instead.
being mean.
the realization made him grimace slightly.
because now that he thought about it…
ella barely even looked at him the same anymore.
and honestly?
he couldn’t really blame her for that.
Hate & Basketball - TEN
zanine didn’t know it—and thank God she didn’t—but nicholas was freaking out just as badly as she was.
he was simply better at hiding it.
the rest of the school week flew by fast. classes, practice, gym, homework, repeated over and over until suddenly it was friday already.
and throughout every single day, nico found himself having the exact same internal argument.
do i still hate her or not?
because he was supposed to.
he had for the last three years.
so what exactly changed?
nothing should’ve changed.
zanine was still competitive. still annoying. still had something slick to say every five seconds. still looked at him like he personally ruined her life.
and yet somehow…
things felt different now.
maybe it started in homeroom when she looked at him like she forgot how to speak for a second.
or maybe during that one-on-one game when she smiled after scoring on him.
or maybe it was the fact he’d started noticing little things about her all week without meaning to.
the way she tapped her pencil against her notebook when she got impatient.
the way she laughed harder around her friends than anybody else.
the way she always tied her hair up before gym like she was preparing for war.
it was irritating.
because nico didn’t want to notice those things.
he especially didn’t want to care.
yet here he was, laying across his bed friday afternoon with one arm behind his head, staring at the ceiling while his thoughts betrayed him again.
he turned his phone off, the boys being no help as always.
he just groaned before standing.
“i need to shower.”
—
<- BACK | ELEVEN->
Hate & Basketball - NINE
the first day of school was officially over, meaning zanine could finally go home and sulk in peace for the next few hours.
except… she didn’t even get the chance to.
the second she stepped through the front door, her mom’s voice rang through the house.
“製氷機に氷を補充するのを忘れないようにって、言ったでしょ。”
(i told you not to forget to refill the ice machine, didn’t i?)
zanine sighed quietly as she slipped her shoes off near the entrance.
“ma, not right now, okay? i just walked in.”
her mother immediately placed a hand on her hip, brows furrowing.
“i don’t care, zanine. you always forget simple tasks.”
zanine froze for a second, her back still facing the older woman.
she could already feel the irritation building in her chest, hot and immediate after the long day she’d had.
school.
nico.
teachers.
people.
and now this.
she closed her eyes briefly and forced herself to breathe before turning around slowly.
“わかったよ、お母さん。ごめんね。”
(okay, mom. i’m sorry.)
her mom just huffed softly before walking away down the hallway, leaving zanine standing alone in the kitchen.
the second she disappeared from sight, the expression on zanine’s face dropped completely.
frustration immediately took over.
she gripped the kitchen counter tightly, jaw clenching as she stared down at the marble surface.
she wanted to yell.
not even specifically at her mom—just yell in general.
everything today felt loud.
too loud.
instead, she let out a sharp breath through her nose and pushed herself off the counter before walking toward the ice machine.
because arguing would only make things worse.
it always did.
—
zanine had just gotten out of the shower, a towel draped over her shoulders as she dried her hair absentmindedly.
the warm air from the bathroom still clung to her skin while she walked back into her room. honestly, the shower helped a little. not fully, but enough to stop her from exploding over the ice machine situation earlier.
her phone buzzed against the bed.
zanine glanced over casually, expecting one of the girls.
instead, her eyebrows furrowed.
fuma?
that alone confused her.
she grabbed her phone and opened the message—
only for her face to immediately twist in disbelief.
“…what the hell is this?” she muttered out loud.
because whatever nonsense fuma had just sent her was complete bullshit.
she immediately texted her group chat, they had to know about this.. weird situation.
zanine immediately turned her phone off before she could get irritated all over again.
because fuma—and honestly the rest of her friends too—were starting to annoy her badly with this whole thing.
manon was wrong.
completely wrong.
zanine did not like nicholas.
she hated him.
always had.
and it was staying that way.
she tossed her phone onto the bed before continuing to dry her hair aggressively, like the towel itself had offended her.
because seriously—what was everybody even talking about?
just because she noticed his hair?
anybody would notice it.
it was bright blonde.
and okay, maybe he looked a little better than usual today, but that literally meant nothing. absolutely nothing.
zanine paused mid-thought.
“…a little?” she repeated to herself quietly in disbelief.
no.
absolutely not.
she groaned loudly before flopping backward onto her bed, staring up at the ceiling.
this was ridiculous.
her brain kept replaying moments from earlier anyway.
the way he looked at her in homeroom.
the stupid smirk he kept doing.
the one-on-one game in gym.
the way he said “that was nice” after she scored on him.
zanine immediately grabbed a pillow and dropped it onto her face.
“i hate him,” she mumbled into it dramatically.
and somewhere deep down, she was trying very hard to convince herself she meant it.
<- BACK | TEN ->
Hiii! This is my first time stumbling with you acc and i immediately liked it 🧌 your writing is sososososooo good and i mean it.
Anyways, I wanted to ask if you could write like short situations for each &team member about how would they act if the rest of the boys notice hickeys you gave them?
Im sorry if im not being clear, it’s just that besides I don’t know how to describe what im asking for, English isn’t my first language so… yeah 😞
AHH tysm!!!
and don’t worry i understand completely!! this is such a good request so i’ll do it as soon as possible!
if you’re currently reading my “hate & basketball” series, how are you enjoying it??
again thank you so much 💕💕
Hate & Basketball - EIGHT
the boys started making their way towards zanine and the girls, ready to just piss them off.
zanine tried not to look but her eyes kept flickering to nico.
“what’s up, losers?” yuma approached, making yeji groan.
“that was just a loser move by the way.” she replied, chuckling with lily.
the boys started making their way over toward the girls’ section of the bleachers, clearly with the intention of annoying them for entertainment.
zanine tried not to look over too much, but her eyes kept betraying her and flickering toward nico anyway.
stupid blonde hair.
“what’s up, losers?” yuma greeted loudly as they approached.
yeji groaned immediately. “that was such a loser entrance by the way.”
lily laughed beside her while yuma clutched his chest dramatically. “wow. i’m being attacked already?”
“as you should,” ella replied.
the boys spread out around the bleachers casually, some standing, some sitting lower down. fuma and harua looked normal about it. nico and yuma, meanwhile, looked way too entertained already.
“you all look miserable,” kei commented.
“because school started,” manon answered. “obviously.”
taki nodded seriously. “that’s valid actually.”
zanine stayed mostly quiet, pretending to scroll on her phone even though she wasn’t reading anything. unfortunately for her, nico noticed immediately.
“you alive over there?” he asked.
she looked up slowly. “unfortunately.”
nico smirked a little at that before spinning the basketball in his hands.
ella glanced between the two of them suspiciously before leaning toward lily. “they’re weird today.”
“VERY weird,” lily whispered back.
“you know we can hear you, right?” zanine asked flatly.
“good,” yeji replied.
this was getting ridiculous.
nico sat a row lower than her, leaning back against the bleacher behind him. “you’ve been quiet all day.”
“maybe because peace is nice.”
“or maybe,” yuma cut in immediately, “she’s distracted.”
zanine narrowed her eyes. “by what exactly?”
yuma slowly looked toward nico.
the entire group went silent for half a second.
then manon immediately started coughing to hide her laugh while yeji physically turned away.
nico blinked once before scoffing. “okay, don’t drag me into whatever delusion you’ve got going on.”
“delusion?” ella repeated dramatically. “interesting choice of words.”
“i hate this group,” zanine muttered, dropping her face into her hands again.
harua looked genuinely confused. “wait… are they saying you two—”
“NO,” zanine and nico yelled at the same time.
the gym echoed with it.
and somehow, that only made everyone laugh harder.
the gym teacher finally walked into the gym, immediately causing the noise level to die down.
conversations quieted, basketballs stopped bouncing, and everyone slowly turned their attention toward the front.
before zanine fully looked away, she glanced at nico one more time—
only to realize he was already looking at her.
his expression was unreadable this time. not teasing, not smug. just… staring.
for a second, neither of them looked away.
then the teacher started speaking, snapping them both out of it.
“okay! hello everyone, i’m your gym teacher, mr. lee.”
he clapped his hands together once before shaking his head dramatically.
“i know you’re all probably confused about why this is an actual class, and truthfully…” he paused. “…i am too.”
a few students laughed immediately, including zanine, who let out a quiet chuckle under her breath.
mr. lee pointed toward them proudly. “thank you, thank you. at least somebody appreciates my suffering.”
“this means we don’t have to run laps, right?” yuma called out hopefully.
“wrong,” mr. lee answered instantly. “you especially look like you need laps.”
the gym erupted into laughter while yuma looked personally attacked.
“that’s crazy,” he muttered.
“builds character,” kei told him with a grin.
mr. lee waited for the room to settle again before continuing. “now, because most of you are athletes, this class is gonna work differently from normal gym.”
that got everyone’s attention pretty quickly.
“most days,” mr. lee explained, “this period is basically gonna function as supervised conditioning, practice, recovery, or study time depending on your sport schedules.”
immediately, the atmosphere in the gym shifted.
because that sounded way better than regular gym class.
“however,” mr. lee added, raising a finger, “that does not mean you can act like wild animals in my gym.”
slowly, his eyes moved toward both the boys’ and girls’ basketball groups specifically.
“…especially you all.”
everyone started laughing again while zanine crossed her arms defensively. “we didn’t even do anything yet.”
“the ‘yet’ is what worries me,” mr. lee replied.
even nico laughed at that one.
zanine accidentally looked over at him again.
and once again, he caught her.
this time, though, his lips twitched upward slightly before he looked away first.
which somehow made her stomach do something weird.
she immediately frowned at herself.
absolutely not.
“since it’s the first day back,” mr. lee continued, pacing slowly in front of the bleachers, “you all won’t really be doing anything today. but starting tomorrow?”
he pointed around the gym dramatically.
“bring extra clothes and deodorant. please.”
the entire gym laughed.
“he’s talking to yuma specifically,” yeji muttered loud enough for everyone nearby to hear.
“WHAT?” yuma looked genuinely offended. “why am i always the target?”
“because you make yourself one,” ella replied.
mr. lee nodded approvingly. “smart girl.”
“this is harassment,” yuma complained while the others laughed at him again.
mr. lee clapped his hands once more. “anyway, today is basically a free day. don’t destroy my gym, don’t fight anybody, and don’t make me regret taking this job.”
“too late for that,” kei muttered under his breath.
fuma sighed quietly. “we’re gonna get separated by seating charts by next week.”
“definitely,” lily agreed.
almost immediately, students started spreading back out across the gym once mr. lee finished talking. some grabbed basketballs, others sat in groups talking, and a few people instantly put headphones back in.
naturally, both basketball groups stayed near each other.
zanine leaned back against the bleachers, trying to focus on literally anything besides the blonde-haired problem sitting a few feet away from her.
unfortunately, that became difficult when nico suddenly stood up.
“come play.”
she looked up. “who?”
nico spun the basketball once in his hand. “you.”
“why would i wanna play with you?”
“because you look bored.”
“i’d rather stay bored.”
“scared?” he asked casually.
zanine immediately narrowed her eyes. “don’t start.”
a grin slowly spread across nico’s face like he knew exactly what button he had pressed.
“that sounds like a yes.”
yeji looked between them before groaning loudly. “oh brother.”
“here they go again,” manon added.
harua looked excited instead. “wait no, let them play.”
“yeah,” taki agreed immediately. “i wanna see this.”
“of course you do,” fuma muttered.
zanine stood up slowly, already annoyed at herself for taking the bait.
nico’s smirk widened slightly.
“one-on-one?” he asked.
she crossed her arms. “don’t cry when you lose in front of everybody.”
nico let out a short laugh, spinning the basketball against his palm.
“please. you couldn’t guard me on your best day.”
zanine stepped down from the bleachers immediately. “keep talking.”
“always do.”
the second they walked toward the court, attention started shifting toward them almost instantly.
because everybody knew about zanine and nico.
their rivalry wasn’t exactly subtle.
“oh this about to be good,” yuma said, already moving closer.
mr. lee looked up from his clipboard suspiciously. “why do i suddenly feel nervous?”
“because those two are involved,” fuma answered honestly.
students gathered around the edge of the court while nico bounced the ball casually. even people from other sports started paying attention now.
“first to three?” kei suggested.
“make it five,” zanine replied immediately.
nico smirked. “confident.”
“realistic.”
“okay!” mr. lee suddenly pointed at both of them. “i better not see anybody diving into walls or fighting.”
“no promises,” yeji muttered.
mr. lee sighed deeply. “it’s too early in the year for this.”
nico stepped up at the top of the key, ball in hand. zanine positioned herself in front of him instantly, focused now.
serious.
the gym noise slowly faded into the background.
“check up,” nico said, bouncing the ball toward her.
she tossed it back. “try not to embarrass yourself.”
“same to you.”
then the game started.
nico moved first, dribbling smoothly to the right. zanine stayed in front of him perfectly, matching every movement step for step.
“damn,” harua whispered from the sidelines. “they’re actually locked in.”
nico switched directions fast, trying to create space, but zanine reached out and nearly stole the ball immediately.
he pulled it back just in time.
“close,” he admitted.
“you won’t get lucky twice.”
he laughed quietly before driving toward the paint. zanine slid with him again, forcing him to pivot instead of taking the shot.
a few people watching started reacting louder now.
because this wasn’t casual anymore.
they were genuinely trying.
nico suddenly stepped back behind the line and shot.
the ball hit the rim—
and bounced out.
“REBOUND!” yuma yelled dramatically like this was an actual game.
zanine grabbed the ball first and immediately pushed forward.
“my turn.”
nico lowered into defensive stance. “show me something then.”
she crossed left, then right, fast enough to make a few people nearby react.
nico recovered quickly though, staying in front of her.
“not bad,” he said.
“shut up.”
zanine suddenly spun past him, slipping around his side before driving straight to the basket.
“OH!” taki yelled.
she went up for the layup—
and made it cleanly off the glass.
the girls immediately erupted into cheers.
“THAT’S ONE!” manon yelled.
zanine backed away with a grin she tried to hide. “what was all that talk?”
nico stared at her for a second before smirking again.
“…okay,” he admitted. “that was nice.”

Hate & Basketball - SEVEN
zanine walked up to the dog park and immediately spotted ella and lily sitting on one of the benches nearby.
she smiled automatically, quickening her pace so she could get to them faster.
it was still a little dark outside, the sun barely beginning to rise, but there was enough light for her to see clearly. the air was cool too, carrying that quiet early-morning feeling before the world fully woke up.
“els! lily!”
both girls looked up at the sound of her voice and waved at the exact same time.
“nine!”
zanine finally reached them, pulling lily into a quick side hug before nudging ella’s shoulder.
“you two look exhausted already,” she teased.
“because it’s six in the morning,” ella replied instantly.
“and manon is insane,” lily added.
zanine laughed before dropping her bag near the bench. “where is she anyway?”
“getting yeji,” lily answered. “apparently yeji couldn’t find her other shoe.”
ella snorted. “how do you lose one shoe?”
“the same way she loses everything else,” zanine said.
the three girls laughed quietly together while dogs barked somewhere farther into the park.
then headlights—
manon’s car.
and judging by how loud the music already was?
yeji was definitely awake now.
“finally,” ella muttered dramatically.
the three girls stood up almost immediately, smiling as manon’s car pulled closer. music blasted through the speakers loud enough to wake up the entire neighborhood.
“she’s so extra,” lily laughed.
manon rolled the windows down as she parked. “GOOD MORNING, ATHLETES!”
“it is too early for this,” yeji complained from the passenger seat, even though she was clearly the one controlling the music.
zanine walked closer to the car and shook her head. “you look wide awake to me.”
“don’t speak to me until i get food,” yeji replied seriously.
manon stepped out for a second to help throw everyone’s bags into the trunk. “if any of you spill something in my car this year, you’re walking home.”
“yes ma’am,” lily said obediently.
ella leaned into zanine quietly while they waited. “ten dollars says she speeds the whole way there.”
“only ten?” zanine whispered back. “be serious.”
manon looked over suspiciously. “why are you two whispering?”
“nothing!” both girls answered instantly.
yeji snorted loudly from inside the car. “they’re talking about your driving.”
“traitor,” ella gasped.
“i heard that,” manon replied, offended. “and for the record, i drive perfectly fine.”
right as she said that, her phone slipped off the roof of the car and hit the ground.
silence.
then lily burst out laughing first.
“okay maybe not perfectly,” manon admitted while grabbing it.
the girls piled into the car soon after, the early morning darkness slowly fading around them as they got ready for their first day of senior year together.
none of them said it out loud, but they were all thinking the same thing.
this year was going to be unforgettable.
—
zanine was tuning out the loud classroom, absentmindedly doodling in the corner of her notebook while everyone around her talked nonstop.
chairs scraped against the floor, people yelled across the room to friends they hadn’t seen all summer, and somebody in the back was already throwing paper.
typical first day behavior.
then suddenly… the room got quieter.
zanine assumed the teacher had finally walked in, so she looked up without much thought.
but instead of the teacher, she saw nicholas.
except it wasn’t regular nicholas.
it was blonde hair nicholas.
everything genuinely felt slower for a second as he walked into the classroom.
his hair was longer now, almost mullet styled, messy in a way that somehow worked perfectly on him. the bright blonde contrasted against his darker clothes enough to immediately pull attention toward him.
and apparently, she wasn’t the only one staring.
he was laughing at something maki said beside him, completely unaware of the effect he was having on half the room.
zanine blinked once.
twice.
what the hell?
it wasn’t until he fully stepped into the classroom that his eyes landed on her.
and judging by the way his smirk slowly formed, he definitely caught her expression.
because zanine looked completely flabbergasted.
like genuinely stunned.
nico’s eyebrow lifted slightly before he looked back toward maki, clearly entertained.
meanwhile zanine finally snapped out of whatever trance she had just entered.
she immediately touched her face.
warm.
way too warm.
“…what the hell?” she whispered to herself.
without wasting another second, she grabbed her phone under the desk and opened the group chat.
zanine locked her phone quickly after sending the messages, refusing to look up again.
unfortunately for her, she could still feel nico’s amused stare from across the room anyway.
the teacher finally walked into the classroom, a bright smile already on her face.
for some reason, it instantly made zanine smile a little too.
she had a feeling she was gonna like this teacher.
the room slowly quieted down as everyone settled into their seats properly. ms. hana looked pretty young—way younger than most teachers—and she was genuinely beautiful too, which immediately caught everyone’s attention.
“hello everyone!” she greeted cheerfully. “welcome back to school. i hope you all had a wonderful break. my name is ms. hana, and i’ll be your homeroom teacher this year.”
the class clapped politely, and ms. hana bowed slightly with a shy laugh.
“thank you, thank you.”
zanine glanced around the room briefly. even some of the louder students had quieted down, mostly because they were shocked their teacher looked this cool.
“today won’t be anything difficult since it’s the first day,” ms. hana continued. “so we’re just gonna start with some icebreakers!”
the entire classroom groaned at once.
no one—absolutely no one—liked icebreakers.
ms. hana nodded sympathetically. “i know, i know, i’m sorry. but it’s how i’ll get to know you all, and how you’ll get to know each other!”
“respectfully,” maki spoke from somewhere in the back, “i don’t wanna know these people.”
a few students laughed while ms. hana pointed at him dramatically. “and that attitude is exactly why we’re doing them.”
even zanine laughed quietly at that.
“okay,” ms. hana said, clapping her hands together once. “we’ll make it painless. name, favorite hobby, and one fun fact. easy enough, right?”
“depends on your definition of painless,” nico muttered from across the room.
zanine looked over before she could stop herself.
blonde hair really was insane on him.
she immediately looked away again.
focus.
“we’ll start from the front and work our way back,” ms. hana announced.
unfortunately for zanine, that meant she was one of the first people up.
she straightened in her seat immediately.
great.
zanine immediately sat up straighter in her seat.
great. of course.
she grabbed her pen and spun it once between her fingers like that would somehow prepare her for this.
ms. hana smiled encouragingly. “let’s start with you.”
zanine stood up, feeling the attention of the entire class shift toward her. she exhaled slowly before speaking.
“zanine,” she said. “i play basketball. and… fun fact.” she paused. “i can’t function without music.”
a few people nodded like that was the most normal thing they’d ever heard.
“nice!” ms. hana said brightly. “very straightforward. thank you.”
zanine sat back down quickly, already wishing she could disappear into her hoodie.
the next few students went one by one, some more confident than others. a guy in the back said his hobby was gaming and that he hadn’t slept properly in two years, which got a laugh out of the class.
another said they collected keychains from every school trip they’d ever been on.
then it was nico’s turn.
zanine didn’t even mean to look up—her head just did it on its own.
he stood up slowly, hands in his pockets like he had all the time in the world.
“nicholas,” he said casually. “i play basketball.”
a few girls in the class immediately paid attention a little more than before.
of course they did.
he continued, voice relaxed. “favorite hobby is also basketball. and fun fact…”
he paused just long enough for it to be annoying.
“…i like trying new things.”
“that is the vaguest thing i’ve ever heard,” someone muttered, earning laughs.
nico just smirked slightly and sat back down like he hadn’t just caused half the room to react.
zanine clicked her tongue under her breath.
“so annoying,” she whispered.
ms. hana clapped lightly. “thank you, nicholas! next—”
the introductions kept going, the room slowly loosening up as more people spoke.
but zanine noticed something she absolutely did not want to notice.
every time nico laughed at something someone said, or leaned back in his chair, or even just existed too loudly in her peripheral vision—
she noticed.
and that was becoming a problem.
because she was supposed to be focusing on school.
not him.
—
third hour finally rolled around, and zanine felt an actual wave of relief when she walked into the gymnasium.
for some reason, all sport athletes had gym as a class/free period this year, which was new compared to previous years. no one really questioned it, they just accepted it as one of those “school decisions” that made no sense.
the girls were already sitting on the bleachers, talking quietly, completely unaware of her until she got closer.
“oh thank god,” lily exclaimed immediately, reaching out and pulling zanine down beside her.
zanine dropped onto the bench with a sigh. “i thought i was gonna lose my mind in that classroom.”
“how bad was it?” ella asked.
“icebreakers,” zanine replied flatly.
that alone made manon groan. “yeah, that checks out.”
yeji leaned forward slightly, smirking. “so what did blondie say?”
zanine’s head snapped toward her. “don’t call him that.”
“so it’s true,” manon added, way too amused.
“it’s not—” zanine started, then stopped herself before digging deeper. “just… normal stuff. nothing interesting.”
“you’re lying,” lily said instantly.
“i’m not.”
ella tilted her head. “you’re doing that thing where you’re lying.”
zanine stared at her. “what thing?”
“the stiff shoulder thing,” yeji pointed out. “you always do it when you’re hiding something.”
“i don’t have a stiff shoulder thing.”
manon leaned back, grinning. “you definitely do.”
zanine opened her mouth to argue again—then shut it immediately when she realized everyone was looking at her like they already knew.
“you guys are annoying,” she muttered instead.
“love you too,” lily replied sweetly.
before zanine could respond, the gym doors opened again.
a group of boys walked in, laughing loudly as they entered, basketballs already bouncing between their hands.
zanine glanced over without thinking.
and of course.
nicholas was among them.
blonde hair catching the gym lights just right as he spun a ball once in his hand while talking to maki.
zanine quickly looked away.
“why is he everywhere today?” she whispered under her breath.
“who?” yeji asked immediately.
“nobody,” zanine said too fast.
lily slowly turned her head toward her.
“…you mean nicholas.”
“no.”
“that was definitely nicholas,” manon added.
zanine leaned forward, dropping her head into her hands.
“i hate all of you.”
<- BACK | EIGHT ->
Hate & Baksetball - SIX
zanine was prepared physically.
she had everything ready—her book bag packed perfectly, her outfits planned out for the first week, even the hairstyles she wanted to wear already saved in her camera roll.
mentally?
that was a completely different story.
the thought of school exhausted her. honestly, she thanked God every day that she was blessed with the talent to play basketball, because that—and her friends—were the only things keeping her from completely giving up on school altogether.
as much as she complained, she had always been a student-athlete before anything else. never an athlete-student.
her grades mattered to her. they always would.
because no grades meant no basketball. and no basketball? she genuinely didn’t know what she’d do with herself.
tomorrow was the first day back. senior year.
manon was picking everyone up in the morning since, out of the five girls, she was the only one with a car.
zanine was working on it, though. her parents had been saving up to get her one since her birthday was coming up soon.
manon never complained about driving everybody around either. the only thing she asked for in return was gas money, and honestly, nobody minded. it was a fair deal.
zanine sat at the edge of her bed, staring at her packed bag resting against the wall.
it felt weird knowing this was the last first day of high school she’d ever have.
last homecoming.
last pep rallies.
last basketball season representing the school.
last everything.
her phone buzzed suddenly beside her.
group chat notifications.
of course.
zanine laughed quietly to herself before tossing her phone onto the bed.
outside her window, the night was calm.
but she already knew tomorrow wouldn’t be.
unwillingly, nicholas popped into her head.
she wondered what he’d look like tomorrow.
every year, he dyed his hair before the first day of school and stuck with the style until he got bored of it halfway through the semester.
blue?
nah. he did that freshman year.
red?
already happened during junior year.
last time she saw him, it was black and that was two weeks ago.
so what color was he gonna do this time?
…wait.
why was zanine even thinking about that?
she frowned at herself immediately, tossing her phone farther down the bed like it had personally offended her.
“absolutely not,” she muttered under her breath.
she was not about to sit there wondering about nicholas and his stupid hair.
zanine shook her head quickly before standing up and grabbing her clothes and shower stuff. she needed to clear her mind before she started overthinking herself into insanity.
as she walked toward the bathroom, her phone buzzed again from the bed.
another message from the group chat.
she ignored it.
right now, hot water and silence sounded way better than whatever chaos her friends were causing at midnight.
—
manon had texted the group chat around five in the morning, claiming she was “kindly reminding everyone” to be awake and ready by seven.
really, she had only added the extra thirty minutes because she wanted more sleep herself.
nobody called her out on it, though.
it was now six on the dot, meaning zanine actually needed to get up and start getting ready.
first day of senior year.
she immediately sat up with a long sigh. “great.”
after dragging herself out of bed, she headed toward her bathroom, mentally running through everything she needed to do. shower, hair, outfit, shoes, makeup, bag check.
she was halfway through brushing her teeth when another thought hit her unwillingly.
nicholas.
what stupid hair color did he end up choosing this year?
zanine paused mid-brush before glaring at herself in the mirror.
“why do i care?” she mumbled around toothpaste.
she rinsed her mouth aggressively like that would somehow wash the thought away too.
——
nicholas woke up to his phone dinging nonstop, his mood already ruined before he even stepped out of bed.
of course it was the group chat.
talking about absolutely nothing, as usual.
after muting his phone, he tossed it beside him with a sigh before finally sitting up.
his room was quiet compared to the chaos in the messages, sunlight barely creeping through the blinds. for a second, he just sat there staring at the wall, mentally preparing himself for school.
senior year.
last season.
last chance to defend their title.
the thought alone woke him up more than the alarm did.
nicholas ran a hand through his hair before standing and walking toward the mirror across his room.
bright blonde stared back at him.
he tilted his head slightly, inspecting it.
freshman year was blue.
sophomore year was black with silver streaks.
junior year was red.
and now? blonde.
honestly, he liked this one the most.
it made him look different in a way he couldn’t really explain. sharper, maybe.
his phone buzzed again from the bed.
he ignored it this time, heading toward his closet instead.
then another thought crossed his mind unexpectedly.
he wondered what kind of reaction zanine would have to the hair.
nicholas paused halfway through grabbing his hoodie before immediately scoffing at himself.
“why would i care what she thinks?” he muttered.
still…
a small smirk tugged at his mouth anyway.

<- BACK | SIX ->
Hate & Basketball - FOUR
(this one is mostly writing but it has one thread)
“okay, enough,” lily interrupted before the conversation could spiral any further. “either order food or keep arguing on empty stomachs.”
“i vote the second option,” kei muttered.
“nobody asked,” yeji replied instantly.
zanine shoved nico lightly away from her so she could actually see her screen again. “move.”
he finally stepped back, though the smirk on his face stayed. “violent.”
“dramatic.”
manon leaned over the couch. “just order pizza before they start flirting through insults again.”
“MANON,” zanine snapped.
nico looked offended all over again. “why do y’all keep saying that?”
“because normal enemies don’t talk this much,” ella said with a shrug.
“exactly,” yuma added, immediately betraying nico for entertainment.
nico turned toward him slowly. “pick a side.”
“i picked comedy,” yuma replied.
harua was fully laughing now while fuma looked like he wanted the ceiling to collapse on him.
“can we focus?” lily begged. “food. please.”
after another five minutes of arguing, everybody finally settled on a mix of pizza, wings, fries, and snacks.
zanine typed everything into her phone with visible irritation.
“why am i the one paying for this?” she complained.
“because you offered,” taki reminded her.
“worst decision of my life.”
“that’s dramatic,” maki said from the floor.
zanine pointed at him without looking up. “you especially better be grateful.”
maki raised his hands slightly. “i didn’t even do anything.”
ella snorted loudly from beside manon. “debatable.”
the room quieted for a split second after that.
maki looked toward ella, but she was already pretending to focus on the tv.
fuma cleared his throat quickly before the awkwardness could settle too long. “so… movie?”
“horror,” yeji said immediately.
“comedy,” taki argued.
“romance,” kei added stubbornly.
“absolutely not,” several people said at once.
nico dropped onto the couch beside yuma. “put on something scary. maybe yuma will cry.”
“i don’t cry during horror movies.”
“you screamed during that zombie game last month.”
“THAT WAS DIFFERENT.”
lily grabbed the remote before another argument could start and started scrolling through movies. outside, the thunderstorm still rumbled against the windows, rain pouring endlessly down the glass.
“how about all three? we could either pick one movie with all those genres combined or just watch three different movies,” ej suggested, leaning back against the couch.
“not bad, ej. i agree,” nico said before raising his hand dramatically.
“all in favor of all three?”
ej, nico, maki, kei, yuma, and jo all raised their hands.
lily thought about it for a second before slowly raising hers too.
yeji and manon followed, both looking bored either way.
harua, fuma, and taki raised theirs at the same time, taki wearing the biggest smile in the room. honestly, he was just happy to be included.
everyone else slowly turned toward zanine and ella, who were still staring at the tv screen without reacting.
then nico groaned loudly.
“you two can try to be difficult all you want, but the majority wins anyway, so don’t even bother.”
zanine immediately opened her mouth to snap back, but lily quickly slapped a hand over it before she could start.
zanine leaned back against the couch in disbelief, eyes wide as she looked at lily.
lily pointed at her warningly. “nicholas, stop.”
nico held his hands up innocently before leaning back onto them. “what? i didn’t even say anything bad.”
“for once,” yeji muttered.
“so?” nico asked again, glancing around the room. “all three?”
ella finally sighed and looked away from the screen. “i genuinely do not care anymore.”
“that sounds like a yes to me,” yuma said immediately.
“nobody was talking to you,” ella replied without missing a beat.
“see?” yuma pointed dramatically. “this is why there’s tension in this house.”
“you ARE the tension in this house,” manon shot back.
harua started laughing so hard he nearly dropped his phone while fuma rubbed his temples like he was developing a headache.
lily finally grabbed the remote and pointed it at the tv. “okay. decision made. we’re watching one comedy, one horror, and one romance.”
“love and basketball counts as two of those,” kei argued.
“no it doesn’t,” yeji replied immediately.
“yes it does.”
while the argument continued, zanine crossed her arms and sank deeper into the couch cushions.
nico noticed immediately.
“you look miserable.”
she didn’t even look at him. “because i am.”
“aw,” he mocked. “you’ll survive movie night.”
zanine slowly turned her head toward him.
“…keep talking and you won’t.”
-
zanine got the notification that the food was exactly three minutes away.
“lils, is it cool if the driver pulls into the garage? i just don’t want our stuff getting wet.”
lily nodded immediately and got up to grab the garage fob from the kitchen so she could open it.
it was still raining lightly outside, so zanine decided to call the driver.
“hello?”
the room quieted a little as everyone unintentionally listened in.
“hi,” zanine said politely. “i know it’s drizzling a bit, so if you don’t wanna get wet, feel free to pull into the garage and i’ll come out.”
the woman on the other end sounded pleasantly surprised. “well thank you, sweetheart. i wouldn’t want your food getting wet either. i’m outside!”
zanine smiled softly. “okay, thank you. here i come.”
she hung up and looked toward lily, who immediately pressed the garage button. the sound of the garage door opening echoed through the house.
then zanine turned toward fuma.
“can you and your friend help with the food?”
“which friend?” fuma asked cautiously.
zanine pointed directly at kei before heading toward the garage.
kei blinked. “why me?”
“because you’re tall and you look like you can carry a lot.”
yuma burst out laughing while kei looked genuinely offended.
“…that’s not even a real reason.”
“yet you’re still getting up,” manon pointed out.
kei sighed dramatically before standing anyway. fuma followed behind him, already knowing resistance was pointless.
the three walked toward the garage as the rain pattered softly outside. the driver had already pulled in halfway, her headlights lighting up the wet concrete.
“evening!” the woman greeted cheerfully as she rolled the window down slightly.
“hi!” zanine replied warmly before quickly grabbing a few bags from the backseat. “thank you again.”
“of course, honey.”
kei and fuma started helping too, carrying armfuls of pizza boxes and bags of snacks.
“damn,” kei muttered. “how much food did you order?”
“a necessary amount,” zanine answered seriously.
fuma looked down at one of the receipts. “…you spent over a hundred dollars.”
zanine snatched the paper instantly. “mind your business.”
from inside the house, yuma yelled, “if there’s no fries in there i’m suing!”
“you’re not getting any fries now!” zanine yelled back.
“SEE?” yuma shouted to the others. “she hates us!”
nico’s laugh echoed from the living room while lily shook her head fondly.
despite all the arguing, the house somehow felt warmer now—louder too.
like everyone was slowly forgetting they were supposed to dislike each other in the first place.
-
<- BACK | FIVE ->
Hate & Basketball - THREE
zanine was irritated. nico had started with her for no reason like always and ended up making her rage quit the card game they were all playing.
“why are you so upset? it’s just a game,” he said, leaning back like he hadn’t just been the problem.
zanine got up from her spot on the floor and moved to the couch, grabbing her phone. “i knew you were a dick, but i didn’t know you were also an idiot.”
“woah,” yuma cut in, snickering. “let’s watch the name calling, yeah?”
“yuma, shut up,” yeji snapped immediately. “oh my gosh. all you do is add your two cents like anybody has ever asked for them.”
yuma’s smile dropped instantly as he looked at her, offended into silence for once.
fuma let out a long sigh, rubbing the back of his neck. he hated this. not the game, not the rain, not even the fact that they were all stuck in lily’s house—just the constant tension between both groups.
it was stupid to him.
they all played the same sport, for the same school, chasing the same goal. so why did it always feel like a war instead of a team?
harua glanced between everyone and muttered, “we literally just played a close game together like an hour ago.”
“and?” nico replied.
“and you’re still annoying,” zanine added without looking up from her phone.
maki exhaled quietly from where he was sitting, leaning back against the wall. “can we not do this again?”
“he started it,” zanine said instantly.
“you always say that,” ej pointed out.
“because it’s always true,” she shot back.
lily, standing near the kitchen, finally spoke up again, her tone firm but tired. “guys. seriously. my house.”
that got everyone to quiet down for a second.
harua leaned toward fuma, lowering his voice. “this is your idea of ‘they’ll forgive us’?”
fuma didn’t even look at him. “i was optimistic.”
another beat of silence passed, only broken by the rain hitting the windows.
then yeji stood up and grabbed the deck of cards again. “we’re not restarting that game. pick something else before i lose my mind.”
“finally,” zanine muttered.
nico smirked slightly. “afraid you can’t handle losing twice?”
zanine looked up slowly.
“say that again and i’ll throw this entire deck at your head.”
nico just shrugged before going over to talk to maki about who knows what.
zanine turned toward ella, only to catch her openly glaring at maki from across the room. she almost laughed.
she tapped ella’s shoulder, getting her attention.
“you’re making it obvious.”
“isn’t that kinda the point?” ella replied without shame.
zanine shook her head before looking back down at her phone, scrolling aimlessly.
the room suddenly got quiet, everybody distracted by their screens. lily glanced around before sighing dramatically.
“okay, i know we’re not exactly best friends, but can we at least put the phones down?”
zanine was the first to lock her phone and toss it beside her, giving lily her full attention.
“and do what?” yuma asked, turning his phone off too.
lily shrugged. “we could watch a movie? i don’t have this giant screen for no reason.”
taki immediately sat up at the mention of a movie, a grin spreading across his face.
“i vote comedy!”
“nah,” yeji said instantly. “let’s do horror.”
at this point, everyone’s attention was finally off their phones.
zanine pointed at yeji in agreement. they were basically the same person half the time anyway.
“horror? basic,” kei said, crossing his arms.
yeji squinted at him. “you got a better idea?”
“yeah actually,” he replied. “love and basketball.”
fuma blinked. “so… romance?”
kei nodded seriously. “exactly.”
before anyone else could argue, manon suddenly stood up, immediately commanding everyone’s attention.
“okay, before we discuss anything else, the main and most important topic is food.”
“i only have ramen in the kitchen…” lily admitted. “we kinda have to go shopping.”
zanine shook her head and pulled her phone back out. “it’s okay, i got it.”
she looked toward the girls first. “what do you four want?”
immediately, yeji, manon, ella, and lily crowded closer to her.
“oh—and you three too,” zanine added, nodding toward fuma, harua, and taki.
she heard nico and yuma scoff from across the room. when she looked up, both of them were staring at her in disbelief.
zanine laughed. “you thought i was buying food for all of you? cute.”
“crazy hating,” yuma muttered.
“deserved hating,” zanine corrected.
lily looked over at her tiredly. “don’t be like that, nine.”
“i’m serious,” zanine replied. “they stress me out for free. they can buy their own snacks.”
“i got chips money,” harua offered awkwardly, trying to keep the peace.
“same,” taki added quickly.
fuma sighed. “why does everything become an argument with you people?”
“because they’re annoying,” zanine and nico said at the exact same time.
the room went silent for a second.
then manon burst out laughing. “oh my god, you two are actually the same person.”
“don’t ever compare me to him again,” zanine said immediately.
nico looked equally offended. “trust me, the feeling’s mutual.”
“she’ll get you something. won’t you, zanine?” lily asked firmly.
zanine rolled her eyes so hard it almost looked painful before letting out a dramatic sigh.
“what do you all want?”
ej spoke first. “doesn’t really matter to me.”
jo nodded in agreement. “same here.”
nico suddenly stood up and walked over toward zanine.
her eyes followed his every move suspiciously.
“what are you doing?” she asked immediately.
instead of answering, he bent down beside her to look at her phone screen. way too close for her comfort.
zanine stiffened instantly.
“back up,” she muttered.
“i’m trying to see the menu,” nico replied casually, not moving at all.
“well you’re breathing my air.”
harua immediately looked away to hide his laugh while taki physically covered his mouth.
nico ignored them, still staring at the phone. “get wings.”
“absolutely not.”
“why not?”
“because you eat like a linebacker and i’m not paying thirty dollars for your appetite.”
“that sounds personal.”
“it is.”
nico finally glanced at her instead of the phone, amusement flickering across his face. “you always this mean?”
zanine narrowed her eyes. “you always this annoying?”
“yes.”
“…at least you’re self aware.”
fuma sighed from across the room. “can you two interact normally for five minutes?”
“no,” both of them answered instantly again.
this time even maki laughed quietly.
ella pointed accusingly at the pair from the couch. “see? this is why everybody thinks you secretly like each other.”
the entire room froze.
zanine looked horrified.
nico blinked once before scoffing loudly. “okay relax.”
“ella,” zanine said slowly, “watch your mouth.”
manon was already dying laughing beside her while yeji nearly fell off the couch.
“i’m serious!” ella defended between laughs. “the tension is weird!”
“there is no tension,” zanine argued immediately.
nico crossed his arms. “exactly. she just hates me.”
“with passion,” zanine added.
“see?” yuma said smugly. “that’s still tension.”
<- BACK | FOUR ->
Hate & Basketball - TWO
the whistle blew, and lily tossed the ball into the air.
nico was taller than zanine, so he easily tipped the ball toward his side of the court.
zanine didn’t care much, though. her team was more than capable of stealing possession back.
yuma caught the ball first, immediately getting pressed by yeji. she stayed right on him, barely giving him room to breathe.
“damn, back up,” yuma complained, trying to dribble around her.
“make me,” yeji replied instantly.
he searched for an opening before quickly passing the ball to jo.
jo caught it cleanly and started dribbling, scanning the court as he moved forward. taki stepped in front of him, arms spread wide in defense while fuma kept close near the paint.
nico smirked from the wing. “don’t freeze up now, jo.”
“shut up,” jo muttered, pivoting slightly.
he faked left before driving right, managing to slip past taki for a second. zanine noticed immediately and moved over to help defend.
jo tried to force a pass toward maki, but zanine reached out at the last second and tipped the ball loose.
“watch out!” harua yelled.
the ball bounced across the court, and yeji dove for it without hesitation, sliding against the concrete before tossing it up toward fuma.
“go, go!” lily shouted from the sideline.
fuma caught the pass and immediately pushed the ball down the court. harua sprinted beside him while zanine ran ahead, already calling for it.
nico clicked his tongue before turning to chase after them.
“get back on defense!” kei yelled.
fuma dribbled once, then passed to zanine.
she caught it smoothly near the three-point line, maki already moving to guard her.
“don’t even think about it,” he said.
zanine smirked slightly.
“too late.”
zanine took one hard dribble to the left, testing maki’s defense.
he stayed in front of her easily. “you’re not getting past me with that.”
“who said i was trying to?”
before he could react, zanine quickly passed the ball behind her to yeji, who had just moved to the corner.
yuma cursed under his breath and rushed toward her, but he was too late.
yeji pump-faked, making him jump, then drove past him toward the basket.
jo stepped over to help defend, forcing yeji to stop before she got trapped under the rim. she glanced around quickly before tossing the ball out to harua near the wing.
“shoot it!” taki yelled.
harua hesitated for half a second, then took the shot.
the ball hit the rim once—
twice—
then dropped through the net.
“YES!” lily shouted from the sideline, blowing the whistle once and pointing toward their side. “three points.”
harua grinned as taki immediately ran over, grabbing his shoulders dramatically. “i never doubted you!”
nico caught the ball after it bounced and tossed it toward kei to inbound. his expression didn’t change much, but the small smirk on zanine’s face definitely annoyed him.
“don’t get too excited,” he said while jogging backward. “game just started.”
zanine crossed her arms for a second as she matched his pace. “then maybe stop letting us score.”
“keep talking.”
“keep losing.”
“children,” fuma muttered under his breath as everyone got back into position.
kei inbounded the ball to nico this time, and immediately the energy shifted.
because unlike yuma and jo, nico played fast.
really fast.
he dribbled down the court with confidence, switching hands smoothly as zanine stepped up to guard him.
the others spread out instinctively, already knowing how he played.
nico glanced at her once before smirking. “try not to get embarrassed.”
zanine lowered her stance. “shut up and play.”
he drove left suddenly.
zanine moved with him perfectly, forcing him to slow down.
nico clicked his tongue before spinning back the other direction, slipping past her just enough to create space.
fuma stepped in to help defend near the paint, but nico reacted quickly and bounced the ball to maki cutting toward the basket.
maki caught it mid-step and went up for the layup—
only for yeji to smack the ball against the backboard.
“GET THAT OUT OF HERE!” she yelled.
the ball bounced loose again, and this time zanine grabbed it first.
the girls on the sideline immediately started screaming while the boys groaned loudly.
“that was clean!” yeji defended herself immediately.
“it definitely wasn’t,” yuma argued.
lily blew the whistle. “play continues! no foul.”
“biased ref!” nico complained.
“cry about it!” manon shouted from the bench.
nico shook his head with a laugh, jogging back on defense while zanine pushed the ball up the court.
“you’re all doing too much,” kei muttered.
“and you’re losing,” yeji replied instantly.
zanine dribbled between her legs as she crossed half-court, eyes scanning for an opening. maki picked her up defensively again, staying close this time.
“you not tired yet?” he asked.
“are you?” she shot back.
he smirked a little. “not even close.”
zanine tried driving right, but maki cut her off quickly. she clicked her tongue before passing out to fuma near the top of the key.
fuma held the ball for a second, watching the defense shift.
“screen left!” taki called.
harua immediately moved, setting a screen that gave fuma just enough room to move past yuma. jo stepped up to help, leaving yeji open near the baseline.
fuma saw it instantly and whipped the ball toward her.
yeji caught it cleanly and rose for the jumper—
swish.
“that’s money!” manon yelled from the sideline.
yeji pointed at her before jogging backward with a grin. “easy.”
nico grabbed the ball again, this time clearly irritated. “okay, now y’all are starting to annoy me.”
“starting?” zanine laughed. “thought we already did.”
the boys reset quickly. this possession moved smoother than the others, like they finally stopped underestimating them.
nico passed to yuma. yuma immediately swung it to kei, who drove toward the basket before kicking it back out to jo.
the ball kept moving until it landed in maki’s hands at the corner.
ella, still sitting on the bench, stiffened slightly without meaning to.
maki looked up at the rim.
shooting was his specialty. everybody knew that.
harua noticed too late. “get out there!”
maki released the shot—
swish.
clean.
“finally,” yuma said dramatically, throwing his arms up.
maki just jogged backward calmly while nico smirked. “there we go.”
the score was getting closer now, and everybody could feel the energy changing. what started as a casual game was slowly turning competitive for real.
lily glanced between both teams from the sideline and sighed quietly.
“they’re definitely gonna start arguing soon,” she muttered.
“soon?” manon replied. “they already have… give it two minutes to get worse.”
back on the court, zanine caught the inbound pass and immediately heard nico’s voice.
“don’t choke now, captain.”
she spun the ball once in her hands before looking directly at him.
“worry about guarding me first.”
nico stepped up immediately, sneakers scraping against the concrete as he got into position in front of her.
“gladly.”
zanine narrowed her eyes before dribbling forward. she crossed left, then right, trying to shake him off, but nico stayed glued to her movements.
“damn,” ella muttered from the side. “they’re really trying.”
“this stopped being friendly like ten minutes ago,” manon replied.
zanine suddenly sped up, slipping past nico just enough to get near the free throw line. kei moved over to help defend, forcing her to stop before she got trapped.
without hesitation, she passed out to fuma.
fuma caught it, faked a shot, then drove inside instead. jo blocked his path, making him pivot quickly before tossing the ball behind him toward harua.
harua blinked. “oh—”
“shoot!” yeji yelled.
he immediately put the shot up.
clank.
the ball bounced hard off the rim.
“rebound!” lily shouted.
everyone jumped at once. arms collided, shoes squeaked, voices overlapped.
maki managed to grab the rebound first, pulling the ball down against his chest before turning quickly up the court.
“go, go!” yuma called as they broke into transition.
maki pushed forward fast, dribbling past half court while zanine and yeji hurried back on defense.
nico ran beside him on the left.
for a second, it looked like maki was going to take the shot himself.
instead, he suddenly passed to nico.
nico caught it smoothly and drove straight toward the basket.
fuma stepped in front of him at the last second.
nico smirked. “bad idea.”
he spun around him cleanly and went up for the layup—
but zanine came flying in from the side and smacked the ball away before it touched the backboard.
“OH!” harua yelled.
the ball flew out toward the sideline, bouncing near lily’s feet.
everyone froze for a second.
then the yelling started.
“that was a foul!” yuma shouted immediately.
“how?!” zanine argued back. “i touched the ball first!”
nico looked more annoyed than angry as he stared at her. “you almost took my arm off.”
“dramatic,” yeji muttered.
lily blew the whistle loudly before things could escalate more. “out on zanine’s side. boys’ ball.”
“thank you,” nico said sarcastically.
zanine rolled her eyes and backed up into position again.
maki moved to inbound the ball while the others reset. as he held the basketball in his hands, his eyes flicked toward the bench for a split second.
ella noticed.
and this time, instead of looking away first, she held his stare for a moment before crossing her arms and looking off.
maki frowned slightly.
the whistle blew again.
play resumed.
——
eventually, subs started rotating in.
nico, harua, and yeji all checked out, with ej, ella, and manon taking their places.
the score was now 20-24, nico’s team in the lead.
zanine was absolutely not about to let that slide.
she needed to beat them.
especially nico.
sweat clung to her forehead as she wiped her hands on her shorts, eyes locked on the court while lily tossed the ball back in. the game had gotten way more intense than anybody originally planned. nobody was laughing as much anymore. now it was just competition. pure competition.
“lock in,” fuma said, clapping his hands once.
“already am,” zanine replied immediately.
ella moved into position quietly, adjusting the sleeves of her hoodie before focusing on defense. across from her, maki bounced lightly on his heels while waiting for the inbound.
for a second, neither of them looked at each other.
then ej inbounded the ball to yuma, and everything sped up again.
yuma dribbled down the court confidently before trying to cross manon up.
she stayed right in front of him.
“where you going?” she asked.
“away from you, hopefully.”
“not happening.”
yuma clicked his tongue before passing to ej. ej immediately tried driving inside, but fuma blocked his lane fast enough to force him back out.
“screen!” kei called.
maki moved over to help, setting a clean screen that let ej slip past for a second—
but ella stepped in and stole the ball clean from the side.
“OH!” lily yelled from the sideline.
ella quickly pushed the ball forward before anybody could react. zanine was already sprinting down the court beside her.
“right here!” zanine called.
ella passed it ahead perfectly.
zanine caught it in stride and drove straight toward the basket. jo moved to contest her, but she euro-stepped around him smoothly and finished the layup off the glass.
“AND ONE!” manon screamed even though nobody touched her.
zanine pointed toward the sideline while jogging backward. “that’s what i’m talking about!”
nico, watching from the bench now, leaned forward with narrowed eyes.
the score tightened to 22-24.
the energy on the court shifted again.
because now zanine was playing angry.
ej grabbed the ball quickly and inbounded it to kei.
“slow it down,” kei said, motioning for everyone to spread out.
but zanine was already pressing up on defense, refusing to let them breathe for even a second.
“damn, relax,” yuma complained from the wing.
“scoreboard,” zanine replied instantly.
kei dribbled carefully while fuma guarded him near the top of the key. manon stayed on yuma, talking the entire time just to irritate him.
on the other side, ella kept close to maki. not too close, but enough to stop him from getting comfortable.
maki noticed immediately.
“you guarding me now?” he asked lightly.
ella kept her eyes on the ball instead of him. “unfortunately.”
for some reason, that made the corner of his mouth twitch.
kei drove left suddenly, forcing fuma to slide over. as soon as he did, kei kicked the ball out to jo near the baseline.
jo caught it and went up for the jumper—
brick.
the rebound bounced high into the air.
“mine!” taki yelled, jumping for it.
except ej grabbed it first.
“again!” yuma shouted.
ej immediately tried putting it back up, but zanine came flying in and stripped the ball loose before he could even leave the ground.
“come ON,” ej groaned.
zanine recovered the ball and pushed forward fast. ella and manon sprinted beside her while the others rushed to catch up.
“left!” manon called.
zanine passed it over. manon caught it and immediately drew yuma toward her before bouncing the ball to ella cutting down the middle.
ella froze for half a second when she realized maki was the one stepping up to guard her near the paint.
the same way he had during practices.
the same way he used to before everything got weird between them.
“ella!” fuma yelled. “take it up!”
she snapped out of it instantly.
maki reached for the ball, expecting her to hesitate.
instead, ella spun around him cleanly and laid the ball in off the backboard.
the court exploded.
“OKAY ELLA!” lily screamed from the sideline.
manon nearly fell over celebrating. “YEAHHH!”
even zanine looked shocked for a second before grinning proudly.
ella landed awkwardly, immediately jogging backward like the play hadn’t just happened. but the tiny smile on her face gave her away completely.
maki stood there for a second longer than everyone else.
then he exhaled quietly and smirked to himself.
“…nice move,” he muttered under his breath.
the score was tied now.
24-24.
the plan was to play until thirty, but before they could even start the next possession, thunder suddenly cracked through the sky.
“oh shit,” lily said, immediately looking up.
and then the rain came pouring down.
“come on!”
everyone scrambled at once, rushing to grab their bags, hoodies, and water bottles before sprinting toward the house. shoes squeaked against the wet concrete while people yelled over each other trying not to slip.
lily stayed behind long enough to lock the backyard gate before running inside herself.
thankfully, nobody was completely soaked, but everyone was definitely wet enough to complain about it.
“damn, we were on a run!” zanine whined as she stood next to manon near the kitchen entrance, brushing rainwater off her arms.
“you mean ella was on a run,” manon corrected immediately. “she started cooking out there.”
ella rolled her eyes, though she looked slightly embarrassed by the attention. “it was one layup.”
“a beautiful layup,” taki added dramatically while grabbing a towel from lily.
“thank you!” manon pointed at him.
nico flopped onto the couch with a sigh, pushing his damp hair back. “saved by the weather. lucky.”
zanine instantly looked over. “lucky? the score was tied.”
“and we still would’ve won.”
“keep dreaming.”
“you were literally getting locked up five minutes ago,” yuma added.
“by who?” zanine asked, genuinely confused. “certainly not you.”
harua burst out laughing from the floor while fuma groaned quietly. “please don’t start again.”
“too late,” kei muttered, tossing his bag near the wall.
lily walked in a second later, slightly out of breath. “okay, new rule. nobody kills each other inside my house.”
“can’t promise that,” manon replied immediately.
the thunder rumbled again outside, louder this time, and everybody instinctively looked toward the windows. the rain was coming down hard now, completely flooding the backyard court.
their game was officially over for tonight.
…or at least, the outdoor one was.
lily sighed, already annoyed at how soft she was being, even if she couldn’t really help it.
she checked the time on her phone—already past nine. the rain outside wasn’t letting up, and it was clear it wasn’t going to anytime soon.
so, being the decent person she was, she made an offer.
“even though we don’t like each other,” she started, glancing between everyone, “i’m still a decent person. i’ve got extra clothes in my brother’s old room. it’s obviously not gonna stop raining, so if you want, i can wash your clothes.”
zanine groaned immediately, leaning her head back. “you’re too sweet.”
“i know,” lily replied, a small chuckle slipping out. “i hate it.”
manon raised a brow. “you don’t hate it that much.”
“don’t start,” lily warned.
around the room, the boys exchanged looks. nico looked mildly impressed, which he tried to hide but failed miserably.
“so what, we’re just staying here now?” kei asked.
“looks like it,” fuma said, shrugging.
harua lit up a little. “free clothes and food? i’m not complaining.”
“of course you’re not,” yuma muttered.
lily pointed toward the hallway. “brother’s room is down there. towels too. don’t make a mess.”
“no promises,” ej said instantly.
“i regret this already,” lily said under her breath as everyone started moving.
zanine nudged ella lightly as they walked. “this is about to get interesting.”
ella glanced ahead at the chaos forming down the hallway and sighed quietly. “it already is.”
<- BACK | THREE ->
Hate & Basketball - ONE
lily had planned a little sleepover for the girls. she was the only one who had a basketball court in her backyard, and everyone wanted to get some games in for practice right before the actual season started.
it was summertime, and they only had a few weeks left until they went back to high school for the last time.
zanine and ella had decided to get a quick workout in before meeting everyone. they had to uber there, but manon said she’d pick them up so they could all go to lily’s together instead.
zanine got a text from manon saying she was outside, so she tapped lily and started gathering her things.
“i’m drained,” ella said, taking a sip of her water, her bag hanging from her left hand.
zanine nodded, adjusting her own bag. the two of them walked toward the exit, the heat from their workout still lingering in their tired muscles.
outside, manon was already waiting by the car, leaning against it like she owned the street. she lifted her head when she saw them.
“you two look like you got run over,” she said casually.
“we did,” zanine replied without hesitation.
ella let out a small laugh, though it didn’t fully reach her eyes. the memory from a year ago still sat in the back of her mind like a weight she never learned how to put down—but today, she didn’t let it show.
not with senior year starting soon. not with basketball season waiting for them again.
manon opened the passenger door. “get in before i change my mind and leave you two here.”
“you’d never,” zanine said, sliding into the back seat with ella.
“i absolutely would,” manon replied, starting the car.
ella buckled her seatbelt slowly, staring out the window for a second longer than necessary. zanine noticed but didn’t say anything—she already knew what that silence meant. some things didn’t need words between them anymore.
the drive to lily’s house wasn’t long, but it was loud anyway. manon kept talking about random things—practice schedules, how someone on the boys’ team was “definitely going to get humbled this year,” and how she was not losing to nico’s side of the school again.
——
jo and euijoo had begged nico and kei to go to the store to get snacks. maki and harua wanted to come so they just let them.
the store was only a few blocks down so they all decided to walk, not even bothering to take kei’s car.
as they were walking, nico spotted a mirror on the street.
“come on let’s take a picture.”
kei groaned, everyone else just agreed.
nico just laughed at fuma’s comment because it was nowhere near late, he was just teasing.
“i’m about to smack down on these chips.” maki said, looking at the bag.
“of course.” kei said, making maki push the boy softly.
-
“so they’re coming?” yeji asked as she bounced the basketball.
lily nodded. “i guess. the more the merrier, right?”
yeji just shrugged before taking a shot.
“besides,” lily added, “we’ll definitely learn more about how they play by going against them. we’ve had to do it for the last three years during practices.”
yeji laughed. “yeah.”
footsteps approached, and lily turned around to see manon, zanine, and ella walking toward them.
she smiled and immediately stood up, pulling all three into a hug.
yeji was still shooting in the background when they arrived.
“brick!” zanine called out teasingly, making yeji miss the shot completely.
yeji spun around, grabbed the ball, and chucked it at her.
zanine burst out laughing as she dodged it.
the girls walked closer, and yeji finally came over to hug the rest of them properly.
“you play too much,” yeji said.
zanine just pinched her cheek and looked over at lily. “you all ready?”
lily opened her mouth to answer, then raised a finger. “oh yeah! i kinda invited fuma, harua, and taki if that’s okay?”
zanine smiled slightly. she actually liked the three of them—they were always decent to her.
“yeah, that’s okay,” she said. “come on, i wanna get some shots in first.”
——
the boys had all been hanging out at harua’s house, but there was one problem—he didn’t have a hoop.
so when fuma told him and taki that lily had said they could all come over and play, harua nearly jumped with joy.
harua, fuma, and taki quickly started getting ready, packing their sports bags and trying to be as quiet as possible. they knew if anyone else heard them, they’d get questioned immediately.
as they were about to leave, taki accidentally slipped on one of maki’s sandals and crashed to the floor, the loud thud echoing through the house.
fuma and harua both groaned as they looked down at him.
taki winced, already hearing footsteps coming down the stairs.
“and where were you trying to sneak off to?” kei asked, arms crossed as he appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
maki, nico, and ej were right behind him. nico immediately noticed their outfits and bags and smirked.
“uh…” taki started.
“nowhere,” fuma cut in quickly, adjusting his bag.
“then why are you three wearing basketball shorts with bags?” nico asked.
silence.
“okay fine,” harua admitted, looking down. “we were gonna go to lily’s.”
kei rolled his eyes at the mention of her name, already turning like he wanted to go back upstairs—but nico stopped him.
“really? well, count us in,” nico said.
fuma sighed. “why would you want to go, nico? just to start problems?”
“that’s exactly why i want to go,” nico replied easily. “that and to play ball.”
taki stood up properly now and glanced toward the stairs. “you guys can go to the park instead.”
“and why can’t you?” ej asked, raising a brow.
“because she invited us,” fuma said simply.
at that moment, yuma finally came downstairs, noticing the tension immediately.
“what’s going on?” he asked.
“these three got invited to lily’s to play ball,” maki said, laughing when he saw yuma’s reaction.
“and you’re going?” yuma asked.
harua shrugged. “yeah… she invited us, and we wanna play.”
“hold on,” kei said suddenly. “i’m the only one with a car. how were you even planning to get there?”
“we could’ve walked. it’s not that far,” taki said.
“the girl lives in the town next over,” jo said from the kitchen, leaning against the wall. “you’d be walking for at least two hours.”
harua and fuma exchanged a look.
“hurry up and get ready,” fuma said quickly. “you’ve got five minutes.”
chaos erupted instantly—footsteps pounding up the stairs, doors opening, voices overlapping as everyone rushed to grab their stuff.
“they’re gonna be so upset,” taki muttered, glancing at harua and fuma.
fuma sighed as he opened the front door. “come on. i’m sure they’ll forgive us.”
——
when lily had gotten the message that maki, ej, nicholas, yuma, kei, and jo had invited themselves to the plan through fuma, she internally screamed.
that was not the plan.
but honestly… she wasn’t even surprised.
they all played basketball, and what basketball player wouldn’t jump at the chance to play the sport they loved?
the other girls were still on the court, running a quick scrimmage. lily was sitting on the bench, phone still in her hand.
manon noticed almost immediately.
“lils! you good?”
lily didn’t answer right away. her face slowly started turning red as she stared at the message like it had personally offended her.
“no,” she finally said. “i’m not good.”
manon frowned and walked over, lowering her voice. “what happened?”
lily handed her the phone without a word.
it took manon about three seconds to read it before she let out a long, tired sigh.
“…oh.”
“yeah,” lily muttered, dragging a hand down her face. “oh.”
from the court, zanine dribbled the ball over and raised a brow. “why do you look like someone died?”
“worse,” lily said flatly.
ella leaned in slightly. “what could be worse than that?”
lily pointed at the phone in manon’s hand.
zanine read it. then blinked.
“…they WHAT?”
yeji missed a shot on purpose just to turn around. “who’s coming?”
lily stood up slowly, already regretting everything. “the boys.”
a beat of silence.
then:
“all of them?” yeji asked.
lily nodded.
zanine let out a short laugh of disbelief. “of course they did.”
ella didn’t say anything at first, but her grip on the basketball tightened just a little.
yeji groaned loudly. “we were supposed to be warming up, not hosting a full tournament.”
lily exhaled, looking toward the backyard court like it had just doubled in size and stress.
“…we’re still playing,” she said finally.
zanine smirked slightly. “obviously.”
ella nodded once. “good.”
and just like that, the energy shifted—less sleepover, more showdown.
——
zanine went to refill her water bottle inside when she heard lily’s doorbell ring.
she walked over and opened the door, first seeing fuma, harua, and taki. she smiled slightly and stepped aside, holding it wider for them.
but then her eyes landed on nico.
she immediately rolled them and turned away, walking straight toward the kitchen like he wasn’t even there.
“they’re all in the back,” she said flatly.
nico stepped in anyway, smirking. “wow, that’s a warm welcome.”
zanine didn’t even look back. “didn’t ask.”
harua coughed to hide a laugh as they followed her in. fuma shook his head, already used to the tension. taki just sighed like he knew this was going to be a long day.
behind them, more footsteps came in—kei, yuma, maki, ej, and jo piling through the doorway like they owned the place.
from the kitchen, zanine took a slow sip of her water, staring at the wall for a second.
“this is going to be exhausting,” she muttered to herself.
and somewhere outside, the sound of basketballs bouncing echoed louder as both teams kept warming up—completely unaware that the “sleepover” had officially turned into something way bigger.
——
“okay. obviously there’s too many of us for everyone to play at once. who wants to go first?” nico asked as he finished stretching.
he was met with silence, the atmosphere still awkward and tense.
nico sighed before looking over at fuma.
fuma caught on quickly and turned toward the girls. “whose team do you guys wanna be on?”
yeji answered first. “doesn’t matter to me. as long as we win.”
fuma nodded slowly. “okay… how about me, harua, taki, yeji, and zanine versus nico, maki, yuma, kei, and jo. we’ll do subs.”
after a bit of discussion, everyone eventually agreed and started deciding substitutions.
“i’ll go in for yeji,” ella said casually, though her eyes unintentionally flicked toward maki for a split second.
unfortunately, she found him already looking at her.
ella immediately rolled her eyes and looked away, focusing back on fuma instead.
“i’ll go in for harua,” manon added.
harua nodded in agreement. “works for me.”
“we need a ref. i’ll do it,” lily said. she wanted to play too, but someone had to keep the game fair—and knowing nico and his little group, they’d definitely try something.
on the other side of the court, nico bounced the ball once before speaking.
“aside from subs, just play until the whistle blows. you all know what to do.” he glanced at ej. “you’ll sub in for me.”
ej nodded.
everyone slowly gathered into their teams before putting their hands into the middle.
“don’t cry when we win,” yuma said immediately.
“you first,” yeji shot back.
nico smirked. “same loud mouth as always.”
zanine crossed her arms. “and you’re still annoying. crazy.”
taki sighed under his breath. “the game hasn’t even started yet…”
“ready?” lily called out from the sideline, whistle hanging around her neck.
the tension on the court instantly sharpened. sneakers squeaked against concrete as everyone got into position.
nico spun the basketball in his hands once before tossing it toward the center.
“let’s hoop.”
