DESCRIBE A PLACE, NICHOLAS KUME
FINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL
UNIVERSE OF COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
Nicholas Kume
Abstract
The objective of this project is to portray to the audience then barrier of space and time between our communication abilities in a specific subject matter. This project will be using three video projectors to produce a small interaction between people set in the limitation of their own individual time and space. These limitation could be a number of factors ranging from one’s ability to visualize to the ability listen to the matter at hand. Communication is one of the necessities needed in order to interact with the environment, time and space thus the question arises is communication limited by the barriers of time and space, or is the barrier simply a fixation of our perspective. This project aims to investigate the ability of people to communicate in a universe under the given conditions which one naturally undertakes in their daily life. I feel as the world ever expands its mediums of communication it increases its ability to create interactions between individuals thus if the time and space of communication creates these opportunities to interact would that mean communication and interaction is depend on it. Through the use of video projectors, communication devices, and props I’ll be creating an installation were the audience will be plunged in a universe only abiding to the universal laws of a most common technological medium through this I will demonstrate the ability for space and time manipulate communication.
Project narrative
Communication it the ability to convey meaning through a system of symbolism and rules. Throughout time mankind has built several mediums of communication system through languages and written text but with emergence of technology as a medium for communication one might argue that it has become the most prevalent source of communication to date for its ability to push the barriers of distance and time making message transmission between individuals move at a higher rate. Thus I addressed a concern on whether this barrier in time and space actually dictates the way we communicate information and if so does it limit our ability interact with one another.
The objective of this is to explore the ability for people to interact with the limitation of the time and space set by the medium of communication. Unlike previous works I’m trying to create a sort of universe in which the laws of physics concerning how we interact are as limited as services our individual technological devices. I believe through the experience people would be able to see changes with their communication patterns and contemplate on whether or not time and space pushed this change pattern or was it just the one individual perspective that change it.
Using Video projections, of phones, text, video I shall place the individuals in three isolated spaces each compromised of a projection and a communication device of which the laws of the universe are abided to. The individual will be communicating with an anonymous individual you both will be given a certain amount of time to relay the information under the laws of the time and space you’re in. For example the phones universe will allow communication of speech but limit one’s ability see the person of interest while the text room might allow sight but restrict audio. I feel an isolated in environment allows with the individual to be comfortable with her communication abilities and in turn to full adjust themselves the environment they have been placed in.      Â
This work was partly inspired by Chandra Johnson article FACE-TIME VS SCREEN-TIME where she explored the individual both these mediums of communication affects children ability to communicate and also partly by an idea I had over the ability of a medium to be its own universe thus I explored the two ideas and developed this project.
I feel as a Concept for art the notion of portraying communication in video art it quite common. It’s a general topic that has been interpreted for its effect of society, nature, and, future. But what I believe renders my work on a different scope of communication than the other ones I have seen. Is that I try to portray communication as a dominating structure in which the rules we set in this structure changes the world around us. Â
