(tag) why the fuck should I learn another language?
Yes, it’s all the big picture things…. the “competitive edge” in the job market, cultural sensitivity, that “broadening of horizons” and “finding yourself” sentiment that’s tacked on as an afterthought by anyone who has travelled overseas or returned from exchange abroad.
But it’s also the little things. It’s things like:
Striking up a conversation with a stranger 40 000 ft in the air as you’re careening through the sky in a pressurised tin tube
Expanding the number of colourful profanities you use
The interpretive song and dance that happens when you forget a certain noun during conversation
…and the subsequent 2 seconds of relief when the other party understands you
Travelling independently without relying on google translate
Google translate is like an unreliable drunk friend
Watching you favourite shows in your target language
Learning grammar/conjugation rules only to find that there’s 172617647911740 exceptions
Meeting people across the globe, sharing experiences and then laughing when it seems like studying, lack of sleep and procrastination are universal problems.
So in honour of these ‘small victories’, whether it be a personal achievement or an embarrassing moment (we’ve all had those!) tag at least 10 people and list the ‘small’ things which motivate you to continue to study a language other than your native language.
