He really didn't. He will very occasionally do something very minor if it helps him (like when Light's house is under surveillance and he can't eat apples inside any more, he finds all the cameras hoping for a blind spot where he can eat apples), but on the whole it's a massive victory for Light to get him to do anything at all. He really is just there to watch and heckle because he had nothing else going on.

Truer words; literally the entire manga happens because he was bored and wanted to do something of a trolley problem for entertainment, see what a human would do if they got their hands on a Death Note. Enjoy watching them struggle with the moral dilemma of it all, you know?

Only then Light was the one to pick it up, and as the apple fan is mid-speech about, "Oh-hoho, all this, power, but do you dare use it?", Light opens the Death Note to reveal that he's already filled, like.

To which apple fan goes, "Huh, okay, didn't expect that."

Then just... hangs around.

The Gatsby that I remember reading when I was 15 years old in junior high school was far different from the Gatsby I read as an adult. And what I remember from my years in junior high was this hopeless romantic that was solely in love with this one woman and created this great amount of wealth to respectably hold her hand. Then to reread it as an adult it was incredibly fascinating. It is one of those novels that is talked about nearly 100 years later for a reason. It’s incredibly nuanced, it’s existential and here at the center of this movie is this man that is incredibly hollow searching for some sort of meaning and he’s attached himself to this relic known as Daisy. She’s a mirage and I was struck by the sadness in him for the first time. I looked at him completely different, I looked at him as somebody that was very hollow and searching for some sort of meaning and Nick was the only one who truly sees what’s going on in reality. One very telling sequence that we talked about a lot and for me was a very important one in the book, is when Nick notices that he’s holding her but he’s still staring at the green light, you know he’s finally got her in his arms he’s still searching for this thing that he thinks is going to complete him. That was the Gatsby I was incredibly excited about playing as an actor and as I got older it took on a new meaning and I think that’s what’s so incredible about this novel, everyone who reads it has their own interpretation of who these people are, who these characters are. —Leonardo Dicaprio

I want an AU where Chris, Jill, and Leon all meet for the first time on a mission in the fairly early days of the RE universe.

It’s not a planned joint mission - just the perfect shitstorm situation that’s relatively typical if your name happens to be Leon S Kennedy - and it happens to intersect with a BSAA op. Leon has been holding his own and then some but he’s ended up with a black eye, because BOWs are a bitch like that. And Chris and Jill just have this lightbulb moment where they realize, “Oh, this battered federal agent was supposed to be our rookie.” Even though the RPD is gone, this is another small piece that isn’t. It’s like being given a fragment of that life back. And the protective instincts go into overdrive because “we just got our rookie back and HE’S INJURED. PROTECT THE SMOL!” Chris is in full big brother mode, Jill is looking for a suitcase she can hide Leon in to smuggle him back to the BSAA to be looked at by Rebecca, and Leon is just going, “I’m a goddamn adult and fully fucking trained federal agent! Who the fuck are you calling ‘smol’?!? For fuck’s sake, Valentine, I’m taller than you!!!”

Jill: “Oh, he bites. We’re definitely keeping you.”

And then it’s just all the former STARS members attempting to tame/make friends with/kidnap-for-his-own-good one very stand-off-ish feral cat of a federal agent. Claire is munching on popcorn and cheering them on from the background.

Apparently, if you let Anders live, Sebastian decides that Kirkwall hasn't gone through enough in DAI and marches his Starkhaven army over to kick down its walls in his search for him. And Aveline leads the defense. One would think he'd follow the chaos that Hawke leaves in their wake to make sure Anders isn't with them first, but Kirkwall IS a mess in its own right so I suppose it's hard to say whether the apostate and his friend/partner/protector are hiding there until you've checked every nook and cranny.

Oh I love love love your Fifth Lord AU!!

I know that it was mentioned earlier that the Lords are more so seen as beasts compared to Miranda, but do you think the villagers would see them having domains? (not like literal lands)

Because I can see Ethan’s ‘Domain’ being something along the lines of Lost Love, being a Widower and all that.

ooo um kiiiind of, i had to think about this one. maybe less domains and more like themes for cautionary tales? like they'd be perceived as having their own folktales gimmicks. his theme would be something about going to your grave with a guilty conscience.

i think the villagers would understand ethan as something close to a revenant, which is a fairly broad category of undead folktale creature. you can boil them down to reanimated corpses who drain energy from the living tho. the reason they come back goes from anything to demonic possession, unfinished business or revenge, but from what i understand the general rule of thumb is the person died with unrepented sins.

nobody knows what exactly ethan is or why he ended up there, just that he feels guilty about something he did 'in life' and is trying to be kind. he's a very hot topic of gossip in this au lol

Hi, you 5th Lord AU really cool. I was wondering how Ethan would be represented in the “Village of Shadow”-book/fairy tale, if he were included (the angel from the crest you designed maybe?). And what would he give the girl – or would he act more like the iron steed?

i'll be honest, how to include rosemary without changing the original concept too much has been a big question mark for a while, the storybook included. i'd probably revise things later on but figuring this out helped inspire me to do some concept sketches!

i think i'm happy with the knight for now tho, keeps him on theme with being her gaurdian angel and hints at his alliances :)

I see Zuko always heralded as the archetypal Perfect Redemption Arc in tumblr media analysis and while I can agree with that sentiment, it's important to realize his trajectory was actually very specific.

Because Zuko started as a good person, before he got the scar.

And Zuko has an extremely stable platform of support for most of the show.

Zuko couldn't have done it without Iroh's unflinching, unwavering belief that he could become a good person again. I've rarely seen any criticism of Iroh aimed at his unconditional support of Zuko- for good reason. It's a selfless act.

Similarly, I've rarely seen any criticism of Zuko saying that he didn't deserve Iroh's support. Maybe a few comments here and there about how ungrateful he is at times, or how he should have "suffered more"(?), but never anything outright saying that Zuko should stay exactly where he is in his misery because he doesn't deserve Iroh's helping hand out of it. And this is for a very specific reason- because A:TLA goes out of it's way to show very early on that Zuko was a good person and can be so again.

So Zuko's arc isn't really even a straight redemption arc. It's a recovery arc wearing a large redemption trenchcoat.

This is an important distinction because a raw, straight redemption arc is often unpalatable to the audience, because it starts with someone who isn't a good person receiving a helping hand out of their misery anyway. A redemption arc starts by looking like someone is forgiving an abuser. It starts by having sympathy for the bad people. It starts by engaging with them and listening to them and empathizing with their struggles.

"But they're a bad person, they don't deserve that kindness!" that's the point.

Certainly not to say that it's the job of the victim to be that understanding, helping hand- of course not. And extending kindness does not mean abandoning moral principles and not holding the person accountable for their actions, a la certain flavors of Harley Quinn-Joker romance nonsense.

But someone has to treat the bad person like they're a person if the bad person is ever going to stand a chance of getting better. Regardless of what the bad person "deserves". The bad person has to accept that help, of course, but there needs to be help (and more importantly, kindness) offered in the first place.

(Oh, and. . . this applies to real people just as much as it does fictional characters.)
