Izmir by Nick Misani and Madiha Malik

I had an AMAZING time working with letterer and jewelry designer Madiha Malik on this brand new fauxsaic and loved immersing myself in Islamic patterns and motifs. Madiha created the gorgeous geometric Arabic lettering on the on the four sides of this fauxsaic. The words translate (clockwise from the top) to hope, love, peace, and unity, which are particularly meaningful since she has spent the last couple weeks in Izmir, Turkey, assisting Syrian refugees. I’ll let her take it from here: “There is a hidden side of Izmir, where thousands of Syrian refugees are hiding far from civilization, working in fields to earn meager wages, and living with little to no basic resources. Because they are not officially recognized, they have to move every few months and find land elsewhere to avoid detection. Devastation, frustration and desperation looms over their faces as they have nowhere to turn with no support. A team of American volunteers with the help of a local refugee are working to distribute basic supplies to help these families survive. 100% of your contribution via this link goes towards this cause. Let's work together in hope [Amal], love [Hubb], peace [Salam] and unity [Wahda] to change the world around us. Thank you.”

Spending only 4 days in Mexico City, en la Ciudad de México, en DF, only made me want to spend more time there. A sprawling American capital, full of sounds, smells, flowers, street art, food, culture. The purpose of the trip was really to visit a friend in the company of a third friend, but it ended up being so much more. I’ll have a hard time limiting myself to just my top 5, since Mexico City has planted itself as one of my top 5 favorite cities. But here we go:

Museo Nacional de Antropología: An incredibly rich collection of archaeology, with a second-floor anthropology exhibit. This museum beautifully documents the expansive history and culture of Mexico and its many peoples. Of all the museums I’ve been to, this is among my favorites.

Bosque de Chapultepec: One of the largest urban forests in the world, and one of the largest parks in the Western Hemisphere. It’s literally brimming with art museums, large trees, and green space.

La Casa Azul: Museo Frida Kahlo: This is Frida and Diego’s house in Coyoacán. It’s a dedication to their life together, though the emphasis is mostly on Frida, to the museum’s advantage.

Por Siempre Vegana Taquería: a delicious all-vegan taco stand in Roma Norte, open till midnight. Go early, go often.

Almanegra Café: a very hipster coffee shop with awesome espresso.

Casa Luis Barragán: Modern Mexican architecture at its finest, with the original furniture. A cultural gem.

The Victoria & Albert Museum and its enormous collection of decorative art and design. I seriously could go back here every day.

Walking up and down Regent Street and sopping for lunch at Tibits, an unexpected vegetarian gem.

Norman’s Coach & Horses for some solid veg pub food.

The gorgeous Art Nouveau lobby of the Liberty Department Store alone is worth a visit. 

Vegan afternoon tea at La Suite West.
