Serving Suggestion presents Nick Santoro's first solo exhibition at The Egg & Dart. His paintings are literally served up, with a ground plane that tilts towards us, offering snapshot views of boxy buildings framed in by car-parks. These scenes are balanced by frozen moments of social connection where objects such as a beer can or mic stand mediate the spaces between people. Santoro's punk aesthetic merges his experiences as an artist and musician. Figures are half-cropped into the frame, with eye contact and gesture determining the interaction. By doing away with sentimental qualities of light, the artist can directly employ playful colour and composition to press pause on everyday dynamics between people and places. Opening night : 10th February 6-8pm. Show continues until 4th March

The work in this show is a reaction to subcultures and behaviors that surround me. I use painting as a means of response to my environment. In this instance it’s the exhibition environment. My research for these paintings was conversations, observations and browsing through photos on the gram, blogs and just being present in what I was trying to encapsulate…(the madness of trying to see ten different exhibitions within two hours on a Wednesday night). The paintings are made from memory, photographs and social snaps found on gallery sites that document performances, exhibitions and cultural events. Some of which have taken place in Sydney and others in my imagination. My aim here is to apply the type of permanence to these fleeting moments that painting is associated with, and to combine my art making practice with my art viewing practice. By following this process, I aim to learn from and interact with the shows I see in a manner other than what I’m used to. I hope some of the people in my paintings see my show.
