@nicodoll
No one except the tutorial maker knows for sure, but It's not impossible for the technique in the first 'tutorial' to have been created independently of Loomis's. It's an intuitive solution to a common problem facing artists. It's good to acknowledge the first to publish, but not everyone can know if their idea was the first of it's kind or not. (The extreme of this is seen with Software Patents, where companies rush to patent trivial non-novel techniques first, and sue if anyone uses it)
the thing is they were all posted in almost identical order to the books, and i dont really call using the skew tool to be that intuitive... im pretty sure anyone who would read the books would know how to do that. im always pretty hard pressed if things are coincidental because its so easy to copy things when it comes to art.i'll let these asks answer for themselves here:
the easy way doesnt always mean the best way
critique doesnt have to be positive to hold true, and critique doesnt have to be positive to be taken seriously long thing below
"the process or tools isn't what makes the art good and worth paying attention to, it's the drawing" sorry anon this is the dumbest thing i've ever read pertaining to art. the process is ALL about what makes the art worth paying attention to
i think this brings up another point: most of the time people view art process and style as having different levels of right, where you can own how something looks but not how something is made.there are scientific equations named after mathematicians, and those equations can lead to different results, but they were still credited to someone for first coming up with it and are still referred to it years and years after it was first coinedstuff like this also matters for things like art technique... a lot of artists take a long time deciding how to make the back bones for their art. andrew loomis is known for his books, and many artists now view it as a bible for drawing and drafting...ive seen some "art tutorials" on this site which are almost identical to the ones seen in loomis' books. you might of seen this one floating around:heres some screens from loomis' Fun With A Pencil, published around WWI:both of these are pretty much the same, except with the newer version using digital tools to skew the floor plan, but its obvious theyre the same technique... i dont think the person who made their tutorials has credited loomis in any of them, even though theyre all very similar, even to the point of the order they were posted.teaching these techniques to other people even though youre not the founder them isnt bad, instructors and teachers do this as a profession, but not even giving a single hint that you werent the one to come up with it might be a problem... loomis might be dead, but there are still people who would benefit from reading these books for themselves instead of secondhand knowledge, and i think loomis and many other artists would like that too.
Why are you worried about people using your art process? Ultimately, the process or tools isn't what makes the art good and worth paying attention to, it's the drawing. It hasn't been the ruin of any artist for them to share their techniques.
theres been incidents in the past where my art has been emulated, almost copied. i remember someone even stole (as in the chrome > view source copied) my theme and redesigned it almost exactly like the theme i have... i dont mind people using my techniques but so far people havent using it for their own benefit so much as just trying to be copy me and that makes me super uncomfortable
all I've found is your hilarious perfect circle tutorial. what others are there?
theyre not exactly "tutorials" per say, i guess more of answering art related questions? theyre in my faq. i think theyres a "cheating" sprite coloring tutorial on my art blog somewhere. please dont use that its like more than a year old and really bad lmfao
if you're so upset with all these art tutorials why not just make your own?
ive done some in the past but it has all lead to people just outright using my art process down to a T and its kind of annoying. i've had to use something else other than graphicsgale to get my tones because of it.also i dont think im in the position rn to teach people here. im just kind of surprised people here will suck up anything even if its bad quality
hama0n replied to your post: anonymous asked:i think i know wh...
oh no i think i missed something, what’s wrong with that tutorial?
(referring to this) its way too simple to be of any use, even for comics and animation where things /need/ to be simplified for readability. you need to know how something works before you simplify it. facial expression is still part of body anatomy and you still need to study it carefully if you want to achieve believable results.
if you want your characters to be believable, you need to make believable expressions, and shifting one mouth to the side or lifting one eyebrow isnt gonna cut it. all the expressions have to look different, even if its just one person. heres an excerpt from making comics by scott mccloud (you can read some more here, but i suggest getting the book):
you can tell theyre all the same face, but the expressions are unique and /different/ from one another. this is absolute key also, dont simplify too much. it'll make your characters all look the same:
also, please dont use tutorials on tumblr unless theyre really, really good (as in done by someone who knows what theyre doing). a good rule of thumb is if you can draw better than them its best not to follow their example.
deelekgolo replied to your post:i think i know what sameface tutorial youre talking about...
Oh my god that one I saw that on my dash like 5 times and already those people I follow started doing similar styled faces in their sketches and comics
i think i know what sameface tutorial youre talking about...
like nevermind im talking about a specific part of tumblr, the artist community, in which thousands of people reblog the same types of "art tutorials" that are meant for everyone whos interested in art. did you know tumblr is not one person lel
"tumblr is a monolithic entity" "also, I actively follow people with shitty opinions"
i find this argument hilarious because its implying that there are people who never do contradictory things ever, especially on a social media website where large amounts of people have similar interests and values. ever heard of mob mentality dude
look i know you guys like to shit all over people who go to art schools but you cant do that then reblog How To Do Same Face Animu Expressions With 1000 Examples That All Look The Same, defend Katy Coop's books and then complain about how art is hard and youll never be good at it, cmon
(different anon here) While I do not think it's okay that Katy Coop get so much shit thrown at her for her art style. What people dislike with her books is that they're based on imitating her own personal style. In her books she's basically saying that in order to learn to draw Manga the reader must draw just the way she does. Which is why so many people regret even buying her books when they were novice artists.
also a lot of western "how to draw anime/manga" books always stereotype japanese culture (drawing kimonos incorrectly, weird fetishistic takes on japanese school girls, incorrect usage of japanese language) and its like Why
are there any particular books out there regarding anatomy/drawing in general that you would recommend?? or
parka blogs (http://www.parkablogs.com/) has an extensive list of book reviews that range from beginner - expert for things like anatomy, line, color, basically anything. if you just google search "[insert title of book] pdf" on any of the books you want you'll probably be able to get a download of them
here are FREE PDFS on loomis' books, Fun With a Pencil is great for absolute beginners
go on deviantart and search "free stock photos"
draw things from life
go to the library! lots of GOOD books there
its infuriating that there are kids who go to workshops (free or not) on katy coop books when this stuff is so readily available for everyone, ridiculous
Stop being an asshole about Katy Coope, please. There's already enough of that on the Internet, you're not adding anything new. So if you could just have a little more respect then that'd be great.
i dont have anything against her more so than im surprised that even after all these years her work is still considered publishable/goodim not going to change my opinion on how i think her work is far too mediocre to be circulated and tought in workshops. there are better books out there on how to draw and you probably know that too
